But Rick was able to beat the shit out of Tyrese.

With Daryl's help, he gave Tyresse a swollen eye.

Initially, one on one, Tyresse was winning with 2 big shots that busted Rick up, then Daryl jumped on his back at which point Rick took advantage. Still made Tyresse look like it took 2 men to beat him.

In the comics, Tyresse beat Ricks ass and through him off the 2nd floor of the prison.

Until they get rid of this Negan character and make RICK the top dog again ratings are going to continue to be low. I know the comic readers have been waiting a long time for Negan to appear but the show watchers are used to Rick being the "hero" and anytime you try to change that in a show, viewers are going to have a problem with it

Negan isn't the issue, hell he's been the best thing about the show for a few seasons.

It's the writing that's made it go down hill. If you miss an episode you don't miss anything because this has been drawn out for two seasons.

Rick being the top dog won't matter if the writing continues to be bad.

People have been complaining about the writing for years and viewership has been strong. Ever since the show started featuring Negan as the primary character viewership and discussion has gone down. I used to see TWD discussions all over Facebook on Sunday nights but now nothing, even in this thread, there's always been LONG discussions about it even if it was just to complain about the poor writing but now people aren't even doing that. This thread probably has 4 pages for the whole season when it was averaging about 4 pages every Sunday

50,000 'The Walking Dead' Fans Have Signed A Petition To Fire Showrunner Scott Gimple

It seems as if showrunner Scott Gimple didn’t just kick the hornet’s nest with The Walking Dead’s most recent character death, he threw it straight into a buzzsaw and is currently being swarmed by furious fans.

The death, spoilers ahoy, is of course Carl, which is all anyone can talk about since the finale. That may have been the idea, but like many seemingly pointless deaths on The Walking Dead, at what cost? Gimple’s decision has riled up fan fury like nothing I’ve ever seen, not even since Glenn’s death, and now an online petition has 50,000 angry fans calling for him to be fired as showrunner.

The petition, as expected, is Carl-centric. It references popular news stories like about how Chandler Riggs’ father took to Facebook to express his dismay that his son was fired just weeks before his 18thbirthday, after buying a house in Georgia, and after he’d been told he’d be on the show for at least three more years. There have been many fan conspiracy theories that Carl’s death was political, a way to stick it to Robert Kirkman who AMC has recently been sparring with, or financial, as by becoming an adult Riggs would have almost certainly been entitled to renegotiate for a raise. Though neither of those ideas has been confirmed, and the official answer as to why Carl has been killed off is still purely about plot, allegedly. Though that confuses fans who know that Carl goes on to having an increasingly prominent role in the comics and practically co-lead the series with Rick.

This is how the petition puts it:

“Carl is still alive in the comic series and has gone on to play a pivitol [sic] role in every major conflict the group has faced. Some fans even speculated that he would do this in the TV show, being the last survivor in the apocalypse. A lot of fans have taken to social media to express their dissagreement [sic] with Gimples [sic] decision. Others have also expressed their feelings toward his decision calling for his immediate resignation. This petition is meant to bring AMC TV into the spotlight and fire The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple for his actions and unfair treatment of actor Chandler Riggs.”

It isn’t the most…articulate sentiment, but it reflects what I’ve been hearing online from the million plus readers that have read all my “Carl’s death” articles in the past week. There’s a lot of sadness and bargaining (“maybe Judith’s blood will cure him!”), but a lot of anger directed at one man and one man alone, Scott Gimple.

carl-walking-dead6.jpg
AMC
The Walking Dead

It is a bizarre situation. It’s not just that Carl was killed, it’s that fans know what happened behind the scenes, and that’s most of the reason they’re so mad. I doubt we’d be seeing this firestorm if Chandler Riggs had come out and said “Guys, I’ve spent half my life on this show, it’s time to move on and I’m off to college.” But to hear the opposite from Riggs and his family, that he wanted to stay and was essentially fired, is what’s really set fans off and created this tornado of terribleness that will probably not subside even by the end of season 8.

And to be clear, no, I don’t think this petition has any power whatsoever to get Scott Gimple fired. Season 8 is already filmed and if a change was made, it would be for future seasons to come. And there isn’t any bringing Carl back in any way that would make sense, so that goose is cooked.

But this is a pretty powerful statement. 50,000+ fans signing a petition like this is not nothing, and AMC most certainly does not want to see The Walking Dead’s ratings continue to slide.

Yes, it’s still the most popular thing on TV Sunday nights when it airs, but at this rate, how much longer? If the show started bleeding viewers heavily after Glenn and Abraham were executed in a controversial way, could the exodus increase even more sharply after Carl’s inexplicable demise?

Almost certainly, if the countless fans I’ve seen swearing off the show in the wake of the finale actually don’t return like they’re promising. And that may end up getting Scott Gimple fired after all.

Scott Gimple Explains Reasoning For 'The Walking Dead' Killing
By BRANDON DAVIS - December 11, 2017

X
Fans of The Walking Dead were left wondering, "Why?" when a core character revealed themselves to be doomed by walker bite in the midseason 8 finale on Sunday night but the showrunner claims to have good reason for the decision.

Spoilers for The Walking Dead Episode 8x08, How It's Gotta Be, follow.

When the AMC series continues beyond its midseason 8 premiere in 2018, it will do so without Chandler Riggs and his Carl Grimes character. Showrunner Scott Gimple, however, promises this is a "story" decision and nothing more, taking responsibility for the decision.

"This came from myself and the writers and tackling this current story that we're telling now and some things for the future," Gimple told THR. "It will be very evident — the relationship of this tragic moment — with the entirety of this story and ultimately the conclusion and resolution of this entire arc."

For now, those reasons will remain unspoken on Gimple's end (though Riggs has been quite open about it). "I can't really say what the giant impact is or how this changes the show because it does so in a huge way and it has everything to do with how the next half of the season plays out," Gimple said. "It's devastating for the characters and especially how we come to realize how it happened. It happened in a moment that was on screen. We didn't see the absolute bite but we saw when it happened and we even saw Carl's reaction to it after it happened in one of the episodes that we've seen this season."

Despite the Riggs family expressing a sense of betrayal with Carl being suddenly written out of the show, Gimple doubled down on the decision being strictly story driven. "It has nothing to do with real life in any way. All the real-life things were of no concern," Gimple said. "In fact, that's the only thing that made it difficult — a real-life relationship with Chandler, how much we love to work with him and how talented he is. The story went in that direction. If people watch the whole season, they will see how incredibly critical it is to the telling of the story."

"This was a story turn, that's it," Gimple adds. "We did not receive a request [from any actor] or anything like that. This has everything to do with story. It's unbelievably difficult to lose someone you've worked with for as long as we've worked with him. It's been a really tough thing. We're hoping to be telling a story that's worthy of it."

'The Walking Dead' Was 2017's Most-Watched Show In Key Demo

he Walking Dead is still the most-watched show on cable.

To end 2017, the AMC zombie drama earned a 7.0 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and lands at the top of the ratings chat with only Sunday Night Football there to compete according to Nielsen's live-plus-7 stats. The Walking Dead hauled in 9.02 million viewers on average in the demo. Sunday Night Football averaged a 6.4 rating with 8.22 million viewers.

Behind both programs is HBO's Game of Thrones which aired its penultimate 7-episode season over the summer to an average rating of a 6.2 with 8.02 million viewers. Trailing the top three are This Is Us (5.1, 6.60 million), The Big Bang Theory (4.6, 5.91 million), and Thursday Night Football(4.5, 5.83 million), in that order.

A considerable portion of The Walking Dead's audience is coming from post-broadcast views with the live numbers sliding as low as a total audience of 7.47 million viewers on December. Episode 8x07 had a 3.3 rating in the key demo for its live broadcast, the lowest of Season 8, but has clearly seen a significant boost in later viewings.

The AMC series ranks eighth in total audience among all shows with 14.8 million viewers in the live-plus-7 stats.

The controversial decision to kill a core character in Episode 8x08 will likely boost the midseason finale's post-broadcast viewings in the wake of a massive buzz while possibly prompting more fans to tune in for the midseason 8 premiere.

Sitting atop the charts for the sixth year in a row, The Walking Dead retains the undisputed king of cable title and its unprecedented run continues.

Chandler Riggs' Mother Wrote A Sweet Letter Thanking Walking Dead Fans

Spoilers ahead for the midseason finale of The Walking Dead.

Season 8 of The Walking Dead has been a doozy. With All Out War against Negan and The Saviors raging, the entire first half of the season took place in just a few days' time. Gunfights have been present in every episode, and we've seen countless unnamed characters fall in battle. But the midseason finale brought the only significant character death, as Carl Grimes was revealed to have been bitten while bringing Siddiq to Alexandria. While fans and actor Chandler Riggs are still processing this unprecedented move, Riggs' mother Gina recently posted a touching tribute to the fans who watched her son on TV for the past eight years.

Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart! The amount of messages, texts, and calls we have gotten is overwhelming. We feel the love!!! I have read every comment tonight and I am so happy that my sweet Chandler had such a huge impact on so many lives through his portrayal of Carl. Please know that although we were shocked and disappointed in the beginning, we are all GOOD now. Chandler is happy and is still working, doing what he loves to do. This is a tough business and he's handled himself like a true pro.

This post, from Gina Ann-Riggs' personal Instagram, show how much the family is dealing with Carl being killed off so suddenly. There is a lot to unpack for the family that has been working and living out of Atlanta for close to a decade, and with the character not set to die in the comics anytime soon.

Carl's death was something that fans have been theorizing about for years. The Walking Dead community is constantly coming up with new fan theories, which gain traction when the rabid fanbase posts them online. While some believed Carl to be the final survivor of the series, others have been counting down until Rick's son bit the dust. And with Chandler Riggs going off to college in the next year or so, it seemed like only a matter of time before Carl got taken out.

But this is apparently not how Chandler Riggs and his family thought. After he was killed off, Riggs' father posted a scathing letter about the decision. Despite Riggs' college ambition, the character's death seemed like it really hit everyone involved out of nowhere. But per Gina Ann-Riggs' post, it seems that the wounds have already begun to heal. Chandler was finally able to cut his hair, and has booked a film project already-- neither of which could happen if he were still on TWD.

The Walking Dead will return for its midseason premiere (with Carl still alive!) on February 25th, 2018. In the meantime, check out our midseason premiere list to plan your next binge watch, and our cancellation list to see if your favorite show got the chop this year.

The Walking Dead Producer Addresses Declining Season 8 Ratings

  • Rosita-Carl-Michonne-Tara-and-Rick-in-The-Walking-Dead.jpg

[SPOILERS Ahead For The Walking Dead.]

The Walking Dead executive producer and CEO of the show’s production company, David Alpert, has provided his take on the AMC zombie drama’s declining ratings in season 8. Currently on its mid-season break, The Walking Deadleft viewers on an almighty cliffhanger by revealing that Rick Grimes’ son Carl had suffered a zombie bite while helping Siddiq to Alexandria. This revelation comes just as Rick and co.’s war against The Saviors took a turn for the worse, with Negan and his cohorts peppering Alexandria with a barrage of explosives and attempting to re-assert their dominance over at The Hilltop and The Kingdom.

While The Walking Dead‘s current “All Out War” arc pitting Rick against Negan may be one of the most acclaimed runs in the original comic series, that popularity isn’t being reflected in the AMC adaptation’s viewing figures. Having broken cable TV records in past seasons, The Walking Dead‘s current run is struggling to match the statistical heights of its predecessors, with its mid-season finale episode posting the lowest ratings since the show’s second season.

RELATED: THE WALKING DEAD MAY HAVE A ‘FEW SEASONS’ LEFT

David Alpert, the CEO of Skybound Entertainment, has now spoken out regarding this much-publicized fall in viewership. Alpert, also a producer on The Walking Dead, said the following in an interview with Variety:

“I don’t think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general, I think we’re just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time.”

Picking through the business jargon, Alpert is essentially claiming that television audiences are less inclined to sit down and watch an episode of any series when it first airs and now prefer to catch up at a later time, by either using an on-demand service or digitally recording the episode. Alpert appears to very much refute the idea that The Walking Dead‘s falling viewership is down to the show itself having declined in quality or that fans have become tired of Rick’s zombie apocalypse adventures.

On one hand, Alpert certainly raises a salient point. Catching up on missing episodes of a favorite series is now easier than ever before and it makes sense that audiences would rather watch an episode of something when it suits them than rush to sit down in front of the television at a specific time every week and watch each episode when it goes out live. Interestingly, the stats support Alpert’s claim. Taking into account DVR figures, the amount of people who watched The Walking Dead‘s recent mid-season finale rises by over 4 million, putting the show in a distinctly healthier standing.

However, if Alpert’s suggestion was completely accurate, there wouldn’t be any drop in the critical reception to season 8 of The Walking Dead compared to past seasons. In actual fact, there is a close correlation between The Walking Dead‘s falling ratings and an increase in negative reviews and this suggests that while on-demand services can account for some loss of viewership, some fans are simply turning off.

They should have based the TV series closely to the Comics. The show would have been much better if they had. All I remember is the "I don't give a fuck about the comic series crowd!" They can't even defend their weak ass position on what is becoming a weak series:smh:. The end is coming sooner than they think. They can save this franchise if they make an anime that sticks to the comic's script.

The Walking Dead: Carl ‘Might Not Die’ Teases Robert Kirkman

Talking about toying with audiences’ emotions, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is teasing that Carl Grimes survival. He might not actually die.

As one of the original characters in both The Walking Dead‘s comic book and television worlds, fans were shocked to learn that Carl suffered a fatal walker bite at one point in the first-half of season 8 of AMC’s hit zombie drama. However, with Carl very much alive in the comics (currently on Issue #175), there are major questions over who will take over Carl’s storylines in The Walking Dead comics. AMC’s top brass have already promised that someone else will carry on Carl’s comic legacy, but Kirkman himself has a different option: What if he doesn’t die at all?

RELATED: EVERYONE WHO DIED (SO FAR) IN THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 8

Appearing at the Walker Stalker Cruise Q&A panel (via Comic Book), Kirkman toyed with the notion that Carl’s bite might not be as life-threatening as it looks:

“He’s not dead yet. He might not die. You never know. But I think if, were that to happen, I think that it would have some interesting ramifications on Rick, that I think would energize and really kind of set things in motion in a really interesting way leading to the resolution of All Out War in a way that will make for a very exciting back half to season 8, so I think it’s going to be really cool.”

With the show currently on hiatus, fans are eagerly waiting for the return of the midseason premiere and to see Carl possibly shuffle off to an early grave in “The Last Stand.” And Chandler Riggs’ swansong is sure to induce lots of emotions. After all, Walking Dead‘s midseason premiere made its own director cry. But no matter what Kirkman is teasing, audiences will eventually need to cope with the fact that, no, Carl is not going to survive.

It simply wouldn’t make sense to retcon Carl’s impending death. Plus, Kirkman himself defended the decision to kill off Carl. That being said, Carl’s infection is possibly the most divisive choice the series has ever made. From Riggs’ father to hordes of angry fans, many have been outraged at showrunner Scott Gimple’s choice to ax the popular character. Some have even called for him to be fired (Gimple is being replaced for TWD season 9 anyway), but viewers would feel a little cheated if Carl lived to fight another day.

There were promises that Walking Dead‘s season 8 would thin the herd, but the shock departure of Rick’s only son was a major twist. Theorists had pitched Baby Judith as the one to say her goodbyes in the midseason finale, but it was all the more poignant that it was actually Carl. For years, people have been guessing that Riggs would carry on the show after the eventual time that Andrew Lincoln departs as Rick Grimes, but we’ll have to pin our hopes on someone new. While many would love to see Carl carry on wearing his signature sheriff’s hat and fight the good fight against the Saviors, we’re just going to have to get used to the fact that he may have only one episode left.

Robert Kirkman Defends The Decision to Kill Carl on The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead’s creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman has defended the show’s controversial decision to kill off Carl. Chandler Riggs’ character – one of the handful of original TWD characters still alive – was revealed to be dying from a zombie bite in the final moments of Season 8’s midseason finale. Carl’s actual demise will arrive when the series returns for the second half of season 8 in February.

Chandler Riggs was only eleven years old when he debuted as Carl Grimes, the son of Rick and Lori Grimes, in The Walking Dead’s debut season. Fans watched Riggs grow up before their eyes, while witnessing his character experience trauma after trauma. In Season 3, Carl had to put down his own mother after she died giving birth to his little sister Judith. In Season 6, the show recreated one of the comics’ most tragic moments when Carl had his eye shot out. Carl survived losing his eye, but will not survive his zombie bite.

RELATED: THE WALKING DEAD: 17 MOST USELESS CHARACTERS WHO JUST TAKE UP SPACE

Some fans expressed outrage over the show’s decision to kill Carl, a move Kirkman now feels compelled to defend. As he explained to EW, the decision to part with such a major character was not undertaken lightly:

“I think Scott first brought it up to me as a possibility probably about a year ago at this point. At first, I was kind of like, ‘Well, that’s a big one, you know?’ I might have had a little bit of trepidation. But once he laid out to me exactly what his long-term plans were, and the things that come out of it, and the things that it leads to, it was something I got on board with.”

Kirkman also acknowledged the fan backlash and actually seemed pleased with the emotional response Carl’s death has elicited:

“I know that some fans online have been very upset, but that’s by design. We’re not supposed to be happy when these characters die. We are supposed to be worried about what comes next, and anticipating what comes next, and stressing about what comes next. That just shows that you’re engaged and you’re interested. Our job is to now pay that off and fulfill that interest, and prove that this was a decision worth making. That’s what we’ve got to do.”

Though Kirkman defends the move to kill Carl, some have argued such “shocking” deaths no longer have the impact they once did. Kirkman refers to fans expressing their emotions concerning Carl as though the negative reaction is exactly what TWD hoped would occur. But if fans are mad that a character is dead, are they really engaging with the story in the way Kirkman seems to believe? Or are they just ticked off over losing a character they liked in a way that feels slightly wrong?

The Walking Dead already went very far in depicting the deaths of fan favorite characters Glenn and Abraham at the hands of Negan. The slaughter of Glenn and Abraham marked a turning point for the show, a moment when many fans walked away in horror. Recent ratings suggest that many of those turned-off fans are not coming back. Only time will tell if killing Carl leads to a ratings boost, and also how the show’s writers deal with the aftermath of Carl’s death. Will Carl’s demise truly act as a story springboard? Or will fans ultimately come to view the character’s demise as merely a cheap stunt designed to shock them?
