Vail, CO. mayor calls for $20,000 fines for violation of traction laws on I-70

Vail Mayor Travis Coggin wants to see massive fines levied on drivers who violate Colorado’s traction laws on Interstate 70.

The breaking point was a Dec. 30 incident in which more than a dozen semitrailers became stuck on Vail Pass with no chains during a snowstorm. The mess took hours to clean up, and as Highway 24 was also closed at the time, passage was blocked for motorists attempting to travel from Vail to Denver during the busy holiday period.…

The trucking industry hits the brakes with tariffs set to dent imports

Trucks are the nation’s freight mode of choice for everything from grain to gravel, as measured by weight, and also carry the lion’s share, by dollar value, of foodstuffs, electronics and vehicles, federal data shows. Imports accounted for 40% of freight tonnage moved domestically by truck as of 2023.

Goodbye to truck drivers ― First-ever self-driving truck in America hits the roads

Not to be limited to passenger vehicles, trucks are also starting to incorporate autonomous driving technologies. Rail mobility developer Gild Technologies Corporation and Mendocino Railway, operator of the California Western Railroad (CWR)/Skunk Train, are collaborating to pilot an autonomous road-to-rail vehicle, dubbed the AR2RV (Autonomous Road-to-Rail Vehicle). In addition, they are also developing a hybrid technology road-to-rail vehicle to modernize the railway systems.

FMCSA introduces two-step process to determine truck driver’s English language proficiency

In late April, President Trump issued an Executive Order (EO) requiring the enforcement of existing English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for truck drivers. The EO sought to reverse a 2016 policy that stated that commercial vehicle drivers should not be placed out-of-service for ELP violations. Since the EO was signed, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance updated the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria to make an ELP violation an out-of-service offense once again, effective June 25, 2025.

Trucking’s historic slump: How overcapacity and undocumented drivers reshaped the industry

Craig Fuller, CEO at FreightWaves
May 26, 2025

…To avoid bankruptcy, trucking firms slashed costs. The largest expense—driver wages—proved challenging to cut, as experienced, documented drivers resisted reductions. Many small firms turned to hiring drivers without work permits to reduce expenses.

These workers often obtained Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) in the U.S. without passing a domestic CDL test. Some states accepted foreign CDLs without verifying the driver’s experience or qualifications, meaning many never proved they could safely operate an 80,000-pound truck. Additionally, some drivers lacked proficiency in English, complicating communication and compliance…
