When Supernatural introduced the apocalypse world in season 12 — an alternate universe where Sam and Dean were never born — it opened a door of possibility in terms of bringing back old characters that fans haven’t seen in years. And it all started when the season 12 finale saw Sam, Dean, and Cas come face-to-face with a new version of Bobby Singer. So now the question is: Who’s next?

The Supernatural showrunners have said that some long-dead characters will return this year, and EW can reveal that Kevin Tran (Osric Chau) is among them. Kevin first appeared in the show’s seventh season and remained a key figure until his death in season 9 (after which he still made a couple appearances).

But remember, when he shows up this time, it won’t be the prophet you know and love. “It’s a different Kevin,” co-showrunner Robert Singer says. “It’s Osric, but it’s different so we’re having a lot of fun playing with that.” Co-showrunner Andrew Dabb adds, “The triumphant return of Kevin will be really fun. We don’t want to make the alternate world an endless parade of [old characters], but it does present us with opportunities if we can find a new interpretation on a character we like — like Bobby Singer last year, like Kevin this year, like Michael. You don’t want to make it a gimmick, but you don’t want to totally ignore the opportunity, and I think we have an opportunity here, so we definitely are going to use it selectively.”

At this point, there’s no word on when we’ll see Kevin or for how long.

I like how they can have different stories every week while keeping a main story going on. X-files was at it's best with the 'monster of the week' shit before they went all in on the alien shit.

Never really a dull moment with the show.

but I don't think a spin off will ever really work

I think people under appreciate the POWER

of Dean and Sam

they are the FOUNDATION

I do think that the Wayward Sisters spin-off might work because it’s going to be using established characters and everyone loves Jody. Plus Jody can fill the take no shit.... Dean role.

But yeah I completely agree that it’s insane that this show has consistently entertained me for 13 years and it’s done it with basically the smallest leading cast on tv. Technically they only have 3 main stars. For almost 5 years.... it just had 2.

did NOT expect them to KILL that kid.

but see with this episode

the producers proved something

Sam and Dean

ARE Supernatural

forget the guest stars and stories and effects

just those 2 men?

can CARRY the ENTIRE show

they BEEN proved it

but this was just a reminder

no Cass, Bobby, Jack, Crowley, Lucifer etc.

Sam and Dean on a case is still magic

CW better just give them lifetime contracts.

To read more on Supernatural, pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly on stands Friday. You can buy the whole set now, or purchase the individual covers of the group shot, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, or Misha Collins. Don’t forget to subscribefor more exclusive interviews and photos, only in EW.

When The CW gave Supernatural an early renewal for its 13th season, the show easily could’ve kicked back and taken some time to relax. Instead, the writers plan to kick things up a notch this year: Altogether, season 13 will test the waters for a potential spin-off, fulfill a long-held dream of an animated episode, and introduce a new central player when Lucifer’s son, Jack (series regular Alexander Calvert), moves in with the Winchesters. “The big thing with us is: How do we keep it fresh?” co-showrunner Robert Singer says. “We just felt there’s so much opportunity with Jack. It’s a big swing again, but somehow we always manage to keep the show grounded in its own reality.” They do that by never losing sight of the central story: Sam and Dean and their very human experiences dealing in a business of nonhumans. “At the end of the day, the show is really about these two guys and how great they are together,” Singer says. “They’re the lifeblood of the show.”

That’s why it might surprise some fans that this season will see Jack hitting the road with the boys, which begs the question: If driver picks the music and shotgun shuts his cakehole, what does the Nephilim in the back seat do? “Last season was about the guys being kids, and this season is about being parents, to a degree,” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb says. “To have [Sam and Dean] confronted by this kid who is at once scary and charming gives us a chance to show a different side of the guys, and that’s always a great thing, especially 13 seasons in. If Dean had a kid, what would that look like? If Sam had a kid, what would that look like? The joke is that it’s My Two Dads, Hell Edition.” But considering that Jack isn’t your typical kid, getting him acclimated to the world is about more than just teaching him how to use Netflix (though Padalecki says that will happen). “[Jack is] really struggling to understand himself,” Alexander Calvert says. “There’s definitely a loneliness.”

GALLERY: See the Supernatural Cast Suit Up For EW’s Spooky Cover Shoot

Loneliness is something Sam and Dean can relate to seeing as how the season 12 finale saw them lose Crowley, Castiel, and Mary, who’s currently trapped in an alternate world with Lucifer. “[The loss is] just constant,” Jensen Ackles says. “It’s Dad and Bobby, and now it’s Mom and it’s Cas. It’s this vicious cycle of loss and grief. Dean just needs to feel like there’s hope.” That hope will eventually come in the form of Castiel, who will return to the land of the living… eventually. “Everyone is healthy and in fighting shape and ready to go,” Misha Collin says of life post-return. “We’re all a team again.” Even better? Having Cas back will help inject some light back into the show. “One of my favorite things about the series is that it can bring levity to situations,” Ackles says. “And I think that’s one of the reasons why this season we’re not going full-mope.” Jared Padalecki chimes in, “Never go full-mope.”

In other words, fans can prepare for laughter and tears in season 13, but when EW gathered stars Ackles, Padalecki, and Collins for the cover shoot of our latest Untold Stories issue, it was all about the former. Altogether, there are four covers to choose from: The group shot will go to subscribers and hit newsstands Friday, with the three single covers being made available exclusively at Barnes & Noble beginning Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Check out all four covers below, and watch a behind-the-scenes video (with more on season 13) above.

Because Supernatural has aired more than 250 episodes, there’s bound to be some repetition when it comes to dialogue. Sure, there are the purposeful catchphrases — “Saving people, hunting things” or “Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole” — but there are also the less intentional (though mostly unavoidable) catchphrases, whether it’s one brother yelling the other brother’s name or something a bit more complex.

When EW was on the Supernatural set for its cover shoot, we asked stars Misha Collins, Jared Padalecki, and Jensen Ackles to pick the words/phrases their characters have said the most. See what they chose — along with a few of their most memorable lines — in the video above.

It’s no secret that Sam and Dean have a lot to deal with right now. One episode into season 13 and they’ve said goodbye to Castiel, Crowley, Kelly, and even mom. (Well, at least Dean has.) Now, they’ve got a Nephilim on their hands. And speaking of Jack, he’s moving into the bunker until Sam can prove he’s good or Dean can figure out a way to kill him.

But there’s a lot more to the story of why Sam is protecting this kid. Sure, he thinks Jack might be the key to opening the rift to the apocalypse world and saving mom. But that’s not all Sam sees when he looks at Jack. “Sam sees a lot of himself in this kid,” Jared Padalecki says, recalling the days in season 4 when his character’s beverage of choice was demon blood. “[This season] starts out and Sam’s kind of lying to himself and maybe he doesn’t even realize, ‘I’m actually reaching out to this kid because I’ve been in those shoes where Dean thought I was a monster.’ Sam was the kid who didn’t really have his footing; he didn’t really know his place.”

For Sam, seeing Jack might bring up memories of tough times, but for Padalecki, the return of this story is nothing but good news. “One of my favorite story arcs for Sam was that feeling of being different or doomed,” he says. “I wrote the writers [this year] to say how excited I was that that undercurrent is back. I always dug that; I dug exploring that part of Sam.”

And now he gets to explore it without drinking demon blood.

Supernatural‘s season 13 premiere ended on a dark note as Sam, Dean, and Jack stood and watched Castiel’s body burn as they said goodbye to everyone they lost in the season 12 finale — Cas, Crowley, Kelly, and, as far as Dean is concerned, Mom. And now, the boys have to attempt to move forward, especially considering they have Jack to deal with. “We don’t really get time to stop and pause,” Jared Padalecki says. “Now we have the son of Lucifer on our hands.”

But that won’t stop them from working other cases in the meantime. In fact, Dean is going to be throwing himself into the job now more than ever. “He’s essentially grieving by burying himself in work,” Jensen Ackles says. But don’t expect him to be enthusiastic about it. “He’s still going to fight the fight, but there’s less passion there because of the loss that he’s dealing with,” Ackles continues.

While Sam continues to look for ways to potentially save mom or maybe get Castiel back, Dean is focusing on the task at hand. His attitude, as Ackles puts it, is, “I’m not going to think about what I’ve lost. In turn, I’m just going to focus on what I can fix.” That leads Dean down what Ackles calls a “hopeless road.”

However, don’t expect the show to get too caught up in the darkness of it all. “The boys certainly aren’t mopey,” Padalecki says. Ackles adds, “That’s not interesting to me. What’s more interesting is the person who looks like everything’s fine when you are fully aware that everything is not fine.” And, considering this is Supernatural, fans can always expect humor to find its way into just about any situation. “One of my favorite things about the series is that it can bring levity to situations,” Ackles says. “And I think that’s one of the reasons why this season we’re not going full-mope.” Padalecki chimes in, “Never go full-mope.”

Late to the party but I continue to love how Every single time a supernatural trailer makes the episode look like it’s going to be shitty.. it always turns into a classic.

I thought this was going to be a simple hunt down ghost story but once I saw they tracked down the ghost at the 22 minute mark I knew it was going to flip on me.

You know when I went to sleep last night... I was thinking the exact same thing about Jeffrey dean Morgan and Bobby.

We already know that Bobby is in the alternate world. It wouldn’t shock me to see John Winchester on their either.

But to be on the real.... I honestly don’t know how this show is so consistently good. Even during the not up to standards leviathan season. The show was still better then most Syfy out at the time. I also love the legit character growth... like when Dean told Sam I’ll tell you later about what happened when I died and Sam was like... no you won’t We never do. That little blurb... hit deep for long time fans because he was absolutely right.

^^^

that is PRECISELY why we family!!!!!

THAT moment is why this show is so consistently good

It HONORS its history

yeah it can fall intro the traps and sometimes logic gets creaky

but they ACKNOWLEDGE THAT

they do NOT take themselves TOO SERIOUSLY

but they sure as hell take the FANS SERIOUSLY

they HONOR the legacy the history and the characters.

We have ALL yelled at the screen

telling Sam to just

TELL DEAN THE TRUTH ALREADY

and to put in the moment...to acknowledge to the viewers

yeah we ALWAYS to do that

(and many times fans NEED to understand they HAVE to do it, to build drama and tension and SUSTAIN a show like this over gawd knows how many seasons)

but THIS time

we are NOT...we HEAR you

this is what I try to tell people when they ask why DC movies fail with critics and fans...

they do NOT SHOW the love of the fans and to the source material many times

you gotta show the love.
