‘Batgirl’ set photos revealed: What you won’t get to see on big screen

Take a look at these on-set photos from DC Comics’ “Batgirl” — because they’re the only look we’re going to get at the “shelved” film.

Images taken during the production of the Warner Bros. movie in February in Glasgow, Scotland, feature its star, Leslie Grace, as well as Oscar winner J.K. Simmons and “The Mummy” actor Brendan Fraser, plus their stunt doubles.

Michael Keaton, who was set to reprise his 1992 role as Batman, wasn’t pictured on set, but a stunt double in his classic 1990s Batsuit was. However, photographers caught Keaton arriving in Glasgow during filming.

Simmons also stuns in stills as Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon. Dressed in a beige trenchcoat and striped tie, the actor points a gun at an unlucky stand-in for Keaton in the middle of the road.

And then there’s Batgirl herself, “In the Heights” alum Grace. In a blue leather Batsuit accented with a gold Batgirl symbol and shoes, her body double’s ginger hair pops as she skirts around town on a motorcycle. In another shot, the stuntwoman clutches crew members as she climbs the stairs of a building.

Meanwhile, Fraser’s double was pictured in his villainous Firefly costume, donning a black gas mask with an ominous tank — fuel for the villain’s flamethrowers — strapped to his back.

Fraser himself was spotted walking out of a burning pharmacy clutching a bottle of pills.

The 53-year-old actor’s “Batgirl” role is part of his return to acting, as he stepped away from the business in recent years due to depression.

In 2018, he candidly shared that a former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president allegedly groped him in 2003.

Fraser is already a member of DC’s ever-growing family with his role as Cliff “Robotman” Steele in the HBO Max series “Doom Patrol.”

Other on-set photos include a yellow Gotham taxi cab, as well as fiery explosions — on top of both a fire truck and a burning building.

Before “Batgirl” was scrapped altogether, it was supposed to head straight to HBO Max. The Puck newsletter reported in April that WB’s then-chair Toby Emmerich was considering a theatrical run for the film too.

But Emmerich stepped down in June to form his own production company — not long after Warner Bros. merged with Discovery and David Zaslav became the CEO of the new entity. He replaced Emmerich with MGM’s Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.

Fans figured something was amiss with the movie when it wasn’t mentioned at all at DC’s San Diego Comic-Con panel last month. The much publicized event, after all, is designed to boost exposure for forthcoming projects just like this one.

When the project was officially deemed over with, a top Hollywood source told The Post that the reportedly $70 million movie — which insiders suggested actually topped $100 million — was not screen-testing very well with audiences.

DC decided to cut its losses for the sake of the brand’s future, the source said.

Arrowverse Creator Announces New TV Deal With Warner Bros.
By Aeron Mer EclarinalPosted: January 09, 2023

The Arrowverse may soon end, but a new deal announced by its creator, Greg Berlanti, offered a promising update for The CW's shared universe.
The Arrowverse shows have had their fair share of ups and downs, but 2022 served as a rough year for the franchise. Several Arrowverse shows were unceremoniously canceled, namely Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and most recently, Stargirl.
The Flash is also set to debut its final season next month, thus putting an end to Berlanti's DC storytelling.
While a new update may have offered hope for the Arrowverse, a closer look suggested that it is not the case.

Greg Berlanti Inks New 4-Year Deal with Warner Bros. TV
DC

As per Deadline, Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti closed a new four-year exclusive overall deal for his Berlanti Productions with Warner Bros. TV to remain at the studio for its television productions up to 2027.
In an official statement, Berlanti announced the new deal, noting that this will mark his "third decade" with Warner Bros:
“Every day I wake up grateful I get to get tell stories for a living with so many talented people that I love. With this deal, I’ll be lucky enough to be going into my third decade of making TV and calling Warner Bros. my home.”
The Arrowverse boss continued with high praise for Warner Bros. Discover CEO David Zaslav, calling him "honest, loyal, and [a] visionary:"

“The TV business has changed and Warner Bros. has changed, too, but I’m as grateful as ever to be making television and working with a passionate, brilliant, and kind leader like Channing Dungey and alongside a wise and tremendous old friend like Brett Paul. In my time getting to know David Zaslav, he is the most rare of Hollywood leaders: honest, loyal, and visionary about the kind of thriving Warner Bros. he wants to build for the future, where storytellers like myself can have a home to tell stories that excite and move audiences all over the world, for years to come.”
While no financial terms are being disclosed, Deadline's sources revealed that the agreement is "structured differently" than the executive's blockbuster overall deal with Warner Bros. TV group. Said deal is estimated to be more than $300 million and as much as $400 million over six years.

This new deal is reportedly more of a joint venture which Deadline described as having a "big potential upside" for Berlanti.
Under the new deal, Berlanti Productions is expected to develop new TV programming to be produced by Warner Bros. TV Group divisions for all platforms, including HBO Max, external streaming services, cable, and broadcast networks.

This deal comes after Berlanti inked a deal with CAA to represent him in all areas, abandoning his 15-year stint with WME amid the DC shakeup.

Will the Arrowverse Continue Due to Greg Berlanti's New Deal?
Although Greg Berlanti secured this new deal from Warner Bros., this still doesn't mean that the Arrowverse can continue considering that DC Studios, not Berlanti Productions, is now steering the ship for DC TV.
Moreover, Berlanti is known to be successful in producing content at a lower budget, meaning that this would've factored in on why Warner Bros. Discovery's top brass wanted him to stick around.
As for the Arrowverse's future chances, The Flash's final run at The CW is poised to end the DC TV shared universe on a high note, considering it is bringing out the big guns in terms of guest stars and storytelling prowess.
That being said, it's safe to say that the Arrowverse will indeed end, and Berlanti's new deal gives room for future stories set in DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU.
Hopefully, some of the talented Arrowverse actors will be included in Berlanti's new wave of storytelling, with them either playing the same characters or different DC heroes/villains.

Snowpiercer's fourth and final season scrapped at TNT despite completing production

Tomorrow Studios says it hopes to find a new partner for the derailed sci-fi show.

By Lauren HuffJanuary 13, 2023 at 07:45 PM EST

Snowpiercer fans have just been given some apocalyptically bad news: The fourth and final season of the dystopian sci-fi show will not air on TNT as originally planned, despite finishing production.
"We can confirm that TNT will not air season four of Snowpiercer," a network spokesperson said Friday in a statement to EW. "This was a difficult decision, but our admiration for the talented writers, actors and crew who brought Snowpiercer's extraordinary post-apocalyptic world to life remains strong. We have been working collaboratively with the producers since last year to help the series find a new home where fans can continue to enjoy the compelling story and exceptional visual experience. We look forward to working with them on future projects."

It may not be the end of the world, though. Producer Tomorrow Studios says it hopes to find a new partner for the series "shortly" in order to get the final episodes to fans. Deadline Hollywood reports that the ultimate goal is to build a franchise, including a prequel and sequel.

Sean Bean and Jennifer Connelly on 'Snowpiercer'

| CREDIT: TNT
Tomorrow Studios CEO Marty Adelstein and president Becky Clements said in a statement, "We love Snowpiercer and believe season 4 completes a story with incredible talent that will entertain viewers while exploring issues of climate change and class warfare. We are so passionate about this series that we have acquired the rights to control the franchise. We hope to find the perfect partner shortly and finish a great ride with the final season."
Based on the 2013 film of the same name, which was in turn based on a graphic novel, Snowpiercer follows the remains of humanity in post-apocalypse 2026, after they've taken to living on a perpetually moving train to shelter from the icy landscape the world has become. The cast includes Daveed Diggs, Jennifer Connelly, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Rowan Blanchard, and Roberto Urbina, and season 4 was to add Clark Gregg and Michael Aronov.

Snowpiercer was the last remaining scripted series at Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that resulted from the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. in April. The show's untimely end marks the latest in a wave of cancellations and write-downs at WBD, including the J.J. Abrams sci-fi series Demimonde, the DC film Batgirl, the HBO Max comedy series Minx, and TBS' Chad.

I was saying in this thread reply below to DC ... it'll be interesting to see if and when they jack the prices (or discontinue) this "Legacy" price that has been grandfathered along in recent years. Here in Canada ... the Crave service offers you HBO, HBO Max, and Showtime content altogether (for 1 price at under $8). We dropped one of our other "combo packs" (certain channels) and added Crave On Demand in late-2021 (contract expires in early-December 2023). Gonna re-up with the same provider and hope it gets grandfathered along further.

Don't have Hulu or Netflix. Do have Amazon Prime though separately.

Jason Momoa on DC Meeting With James Gunn: ‘I’ll Always Be Aquaman’ and Might Play ‘Other Characters, Too’

By Zack Sharf

“I’ll always be Aquaman,” Jason Momoa proclaimed at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance. Momoa is at the Park City festival as the narrator of the new documentary “Deep Rising,” which investigates organizations that are extracting metals from the deep seafloor. Momoa recently met new DC Studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to talk about his future in the DC Universe, in which he’s played Aquaman in several movies.
“It’s very, very wonderful,” Momoa said of the meeting. “I’m in the house of Warner Bros. and they are liking a lot of stuff I’m doing. We got a lot of good things coming.”
One thing coming is Momoa’s second standalone “Aquaman” movie, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” There’s also rumors that Momoa will be playing a different superhero character, Lobo, in the new DC Universe under Gunn and Safran. Momoa would not confirm such rumors, but he did say “there might be other characters” coming from him down the line regarding DC.

“The beautiful thing [about ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’] is me and my partner wrote the first treatment for it and it was about a 55-page treatment, and a lot of it has to deal with me talking to the U.N. about what’s happening with the melting ice caps,” Momoa said. “There’s no far off galaxy coming to destroy us or aliens from another place. It’s us ruining our planet. We need to get it together and save our home.”
Momoa concluded, “I’ll always be Aquaman. Ain’t anyone coming in there and taking shit. There might be some other characters, too. I can play other things, too. I can be funny and savage and charming.”
The climate change themes inherit in the “Aquaman” movies tie directly to Momoa’s Sundance documentary “Deep Rising.” The actor said he’s open to participating in more environmental films.
“Listen, I never though in a million years that people would be using my voice,” Momoa said. “It’s wonderful and I just want to shine a light on films like this.”

HBO Max’s Abandoned TV Shows Adopted by Tubi and Roku
By Savannah Salazar

If you were looking to finish your late Westworld binge, you can finally exhale because it looks like that marquee HBO title (and the rest of HBO Max’s axed shows) have found a new home. As we previously reported, Warner Bros. Discovery is licensing a majority of its shows that were canceled or removed from Max last year to FAST channels. The company announced today that those platforms would include Tubi and the Roku Channel. Starting February 1, Tubi will be the first free streamer to feature the cut shows, housing more than 225 titles with ads and introducing 14 Warner Bros. channels — from WB TV Series, Reality, and Family to ones like WB TV Sweet Escapes and WB TV Keeping It Real — to play the shows on. More than 90 Warner Bros. films will also be made available. The Roku Channel plans to launch the same axed WBD offerings in spring 2023, right before HBO Max and Discovery+ are set to make their merger official.

Here’s a few of the shows coming to Tubi and the Roku Channel:

Westworld
Raised by Wolves
Legendary
FBoy Island
The Nevers
Finding Magic Mike
The Time Traveler’s Wife
Head of the Class

Batman: Caped Crusader animated series saved by Amazon after being scrapped at HBO Max

The show hails from Batman veterans Bruce Timm and Matt Reeves, as well as filmmaker J.J. Abrams.

By Christian HolubMarch 09, 2023 at 06:02 PM EST

One of the most important things about Batman is that no matter how many times he gets beaten down, he always gets back up. And it seems the same can said of his screen adaptations: EW has confirmed that the new animated series Batman: Caped Crusader has been picked up by Amazon after being scrapped at HBO Max last year.
Originally announced in May 2021, Batman: Caped Crusader is executive-produced by J.J. Abrams, The Batman director Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm. Although Timm may not be as famous as those other two names, he was the mastermind behind Batman: The Animated Series, which remains the gold-standard screen adaptation for generations of Batman fans. Timm's return to the character is therefore very exciting, even if the death of voice actor Kevin Conroy last year means Caped Crusader won't sound exactly like the original cartoon.

It may not look like it either. Batman: Caped Crusader is set to utilize "state-of-the-art animation techniques" to "once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue's gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world," per the original announcement.

The series was never billed as a reboot or continuation of B:TAS (though fans who are looking for such a thing can check out Paul Dini's recent comic series Batman: The Adventures Continue). In a joint statement at the time of the initial announcement, Abrams, Reeves, and Timm said, "The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman's noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world."
No release date has yet been announced for Batman: Caped Crusader, although it will last at least two seasons on Amazon's Prime Video platform. Accomplished comic writer Ed Brubaker (who co-created the Winter Soldier at Marvel) is also an executive producer on the series, as well as head writer. He has some experience with Amazon too, having collaborated with director Nicolas Winding Refn on the series Too Old To Die Young in 2017.

How Dwayne Johnson Kneecapped ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam 2’ While Trying to Take Over DC | Exclusive

The underwhelming $65 million worldwide debut of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is another black mark for the DC Universe, the second-string superhero stable. But there’s another villain, insiders told TheWrap: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, whose behind-the-scenes maneuvering to boost another DC property — “Black Adam,” in which he starred — may well end up tanking both franchises, they said.

To be clear, DC has a host of problems that aren’t Johnson’s fault, which is why Warner Bros. Discovery is attempting a reboot under James Gunn and Peter Safran. But in trying to shape “Black Adam” as the new center of the DC Universe — a strategy that failed to bolster “Black Adam” and undercut the once-promising “Shazam” franchise — Johnson may have kneecapped both, painting a portrait of a celebrity who put his own brand before the work.

Johnson did plenty of work in public to undermine “Shazam,” chiefly by promoting a face-off between Black Adam and Superman instead of the more canonical link between the hero Zachary Levi played and the former pro wrestler’s own character. Privately, he vetoed a planned post-credits scene in “Black Adam,” which would have seen Shazam recruited by Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman, and other costumed heroes, into the Justice Society of America, TheWrap can report exclusively, thanks to disclosures by two high-level Hollywood insiders.

There’s plenty to blame for the underwhelming grosses for “Black Adam” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” including middling reviews and the mixed message sent by the DC Studios revamp. Like “The Lego Movie,” “Shazam 2” might be another example of a movie where the audience saw the original as family-friendly fare but perceived the sequel as a kid flick with limited appeal. Still, Johnson’s public and private actions seemed to play an undeniable role.

A representative for Johnson didn’t respond to TheWrap’s request for comment. Reps for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema declined to comment.

Problems cooking with “The Rock”
“Dwayne tries to sell himself as bigger than the movie,” said a high-ranking Hollywood executive who asked for anonymity in order to discuss talent matters frankly while speaking to TheWrap. “He’s one of the few people who always thinks he’s the most important person in any situation or room.”
That plays into the kind of franchises that Johnson usually spearheads, like the movie based on the “Rampage” video game, a remake of the cinematic adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel “The Mysterious Island,” or “Jumanji.” Problems arose when Johnson entered a franchise that was bigger than him, like the “Fast & Furious” series, where he clashed with franchise architect Vin Diesel, or “Baywatch,” where his star power couldn’t save an expensive film built on weak IP.

A superheroic fight
Johnson spent much of the weeks before the release of “Black Adam” touting not the movie itself or his character’s in-universe connection to Shazam but instead on a theoretical clash of the titans between himself and Henry Cavill’s Superman. Then-DC Films head Walter Hamada vetoed a cameo by the star of the divisively received “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League,” but Johnson went over his head and got approval from Warner Bros. Film Group co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy.
“Instead of making a movie, he wants to extend his brand and make a brand centered on himself,” said the Hollywood executive who criticized Johnson. An Instagram post in which he declared that “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change” was an implicit statement that Johnson’s Black Adam should be the new focal point of the universe. That meant positioning himself to go up against Henry Cavill’s Superman, not Zachary Levi’s goofy Shazam.

The actor failed to learn the lesson of Universal’s Dark Universe
As the architects of Universal’s canceled Dark Universe or Warner Bros.’ “King Arthur and the Legend of the Sword” might tell you, you don’t promise a cinematic universe before you have a hit like Marvel did with “Iron Man.”
Johnson spiked plans in the mid-2010s to make a film featuring both Shazam and Black Adam in favor of two separate films. That worked out well for Levi’s acclaimed and successful first “Shazam” movie. As a dark, violent and unapologetically rock ‘em-sock ‘em actioner, it was the right call for “Black Adam” as well. The issue came with Johnson going rogue and implicitly maligning the “Shazam” franchise without checking to see if anyone wanted to see a “Black Adam vs. Superman” movie.
Maybe Johnson mistook the online conversation about Cavill’s run as Kal-El for real-world interest, or he didn’t realize that online discourse about Zack Snyder’s first three DC films was partially a bot-driven vocal minority. Perhaps he didn’t care.

Either way, the actor-producer spent September and October selling the notion that bringing back Henry Cavill as the Last Son of Krypton was what “the fans wanted.” The narrative was framed in a way as to further fan the flames of an ongoing civil war between those in the so-called SnyderVerse and the mainstream DCU.
New DC Studios co-chief and “Shazam” producer Peter Safran resurfaced a version of the post-credits sequence Johnson vetoed, and it now exists as a mid-credits cookie in “Fury of the Gods.” But Johnson nixed the use of “Black Adam” actors and the scene now plays out with Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee from “Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker.”
“By alienating the established property that his character was born out of, and refusing to integrate with other established characters, [Johnson] systematically crippled two franchises, and has harmed DC in the process,” another Hollywood insider told TheWrap.

A refusal to concede failure
“Black Adam” underperformed relative to its cost, earning $168 million domestically and $393 million worldwide on a COVID-affected $230 million budget. That global total is right between “G.I Joe: Retaliation” ($375 million in 2013) and “Rampage” ($430 million in 2018), but those films -– along with both “Jumanji” sequels, “Journey 2: The Incredible Island” and “San Andreas” — cost between $80 million and $130 million.
“Johnson was a big reason why [“Black Adam”] was able to perform above the level it likely would have without him,” said Boxoffice Pro Chief Analyst Shawn Robbins. In a pre-pandemic environment, the movie likely would have added an extra $125 million-$175 million from Russia and China, giving it a good-enough $550 million global total. But the other problem might be underestimating the overlap between the audience for a DC cape flick and a Dwayne Johnson action fantasy.

Johnson, meanwhile, touted a profit projection for “Black Adam” and compared its worldwide gross to the first “Captain America.” In terms of painting its star as unwilling to concede to commercial reality, the cover-up was worse than the crime. At least Jared Leto didn’t spend last April swearing that “Morbius” was a hit.

“Franchise Viagra” no more

Ten years ago, the release of “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” starring Johnson as new protagonist Roadblock, was seen as evidence he could juice an existing theatrical franchise. His supporting role in the acclaimed and $620 million-grossing “Fast Five” helped turn the franchise into an A-level action series, and “Journey 2: The Incredible Island” earned more ($335 million) than Brendan Fraser’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” ($244 million). The narrative stuck even while “Retaliation” earned less domestically ($122 million) than Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” ($150 million).
Warner Bros. Discovery is making like Walt Disney and pledging to keep moving forward, expressing extreme confidence in both “The Flash” and the soft reboot plans hatched by Peter Safran and James Gunn beginning with “Superman: Legacy” in 2025.

Yet Gunn and Safran have a talent challenge in their reboot: A key star damaged the once-promising “Shazam” franchise while strangling another, “Black Adam,” in its crib. Johnson’s public pandering to an online vocal minority and refusal to concede box-office defeat has likewise hurt his franchise-saving reputation.

Johnson tried to remold the DC Universe in his image, and in doing so he not only failed to save the franchise but actively contributed to its downfall. What’s the opposite of franchise Viagra?
