UFC® ANNOUNCES THAT LYOTO MACHIDA WILL FIGHT CHAMPION CHRIS WEIDMAN AT UFC 173

Las Vegas, Nev. – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced tonight that former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida will face off against UFC middleweight championChris Weidman in the main event of UFC 173 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 24.

In light of today’s unexpected ruling issued by the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding the ban of therapeutic use exemptions for testosterone replacement therapy, Vitor Belfort, Weidman’s previously announced opponent, will no longer compete at UFC 173. Belfort, who has previously been granted therapeutic use exemptions, recognizes that he needs an extended period of time to become licensed in the state of Nevada.

With the event scheduled to go on sale shortly, Belfort agreed to withdraw from the fight in order to allow the UFC’s promotional efforts to move forward on time.

“With today’s ruling by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, who’s undefeated since dropping to 185 pounds, will fight champion Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC 173 in May,” UFC President Dana White said. “Machida was dominant in his last two fights, beating Gegard Mousasi and knocking out Mark Munoz.

He’s earned this shot at Weidman, who’s coming off two straight wins over the greatest fighter of all time, Anderson Silva. Machida wants nothing more than to avenge the losses of his friend and training partner, and become just the third fighter in UFC history to win titles in two separate weight classes.”

That aint Machida fault, Joe rogan done convinced all the fighters, that if they come in, Machida will knock them out. Machida is a counter fighter, if you give him nothing to counter it looks like he is just circling.

I predict Weidman's next fight will be with Anderson Silva - he will nickel and dime his way out of fights with nagging injuries until the Spider is ready to fight again and then he will take a HUGE payday - he doesnt want to be exposed by Machida or any of the the other Middleweights who smell Blood in the water and are ready to take the Championship.

In cutting Jake Shields, UFC takes a page out of NFL's playbook

It was jarring to wake up Monday and see Jake Shields' name on the UFC's waiver wire. Shields has long been one of the most respected fighters in mixed martial arts and has beaten a who's who of some of the world's toughest guys.

But the UFC unceremoniously dumped him Monday, setting him free to sign with the promotion of his choice.

It's not much different than what happens to so many NFL veterans at this time of the year. Guys such as former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley had bloated contracts, and when their production dipped a bit, their teams had difficulty finding space for them under the salary cap.

The Steelers couldn't keep Woodley at what he was making with the level of production he'd shown the last three years, so they cut him. He signed with the Raiders not long after he was given his release, and now has a chance to make the Steelers regret their decision.

And, in essence, that's what happened with Shields. The UFC looked at a variety of factors and came to the conclusion that his time had come.

Many of UFC president Dana White's critics will paint it as strictly a financial decision, and to a degree, finances played a role. White told Yahoo Sports on Monday that Shields was due to make $120,000 in his next fight.

"We look at everything," White said. "Everything. Money has something to do with it. I'd be lying if I said it didn't. But that wasn't the only reason or the main reason. It was a part of the piece of the puzzle as we were doing our evaluation of him."

That kind of pay will hardly bankrupt the UFC, but it is on the high end of the scale for someone with little hope of getting into the title picture any time soon.

He's 35 and clearly on a downward trend. He was manhandled by Hector Lombard at UFC 171 last month, the first time that had ever happened.

He looked like he was going to be a gate keeper, and the UFC isn't too interested in gate keepers. It would rather give those jobs to young fighters it believes might develop into stars.

"Mixed martial arts is a young man's game," White said. "I like Jake Shields a lot. But let's be honest here: Where was he going in this [welterweight] division of animals we have? He's on the downswing, and he's never going to be the guy. His stand-up never improved. He hasn't really shown anything in his last couple of fights to make you go, 'Holy [expletive].' Right now, at this point, he's just another guy.

"All of the people who had been [expletive] and moaning to me about Jon Fitch when he was fighting for us and were complaining that he was so boring, they all got outraged when we cut him. And it's like the same thing now with Jake. Well, the media didn't even think he was good enough to be in the Top 10."

Shields is ranked 11th in the UFC's welterweight ratings, which means he's 12th when champion Johny Hendricks is included.

He won the two fights he had before losing to Lombard, though he would have gone into that bout on a four-fight winning streak had he not tested positive for a banned substance after a bout with Ed Herman at UFC 150 in 2012.

Shields won that bout on the cards, but it was turned to a no-contest after the PED test failure.

When the UFC looked at Shields, though, it saw the way Lombard beat him easily, throwing him around in the early part of the fight like had never been done before. Shields beat Demian Maia on a split decision in October, and that's a quality win, and he won a match over Tyron Woodley before that.

A win over Woodley is impressive, except many, including White, didn't feel he deserved the decision.

The point is that veterans with lengthy histories of success are no longer sacred cows immune from being cut, as they once were. It is, if you will, the NFL-ification of the UFC.

There are plenty of guys ranked in the welterweight division who Shields still could beat, but it's unlikely at this stage that he would be able to make a championship run. And given that, and given the chances he'd had, the UFC opted to let him go.

"We have 500 guys under contract, which is a lot more than we really need, and after each show, we really, really need to take a close look at what we do with guys," White said.

The bottom line in all of this is to win and, if possible, to look exciting doing it. Make people want to see you fight.

Because the minute the public becomes apathetic about you, you're gone the first time you give management an opening.

Shields gave them an opening with a series of lackluster fights and then a loss.

His pink slip should serve notice to the many 30-somethings in the UFC that it is no longer about what a fighter has done, but rather what he can still do that will have the biggest impact on his future.

Roy Nelson Knocks Out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC Fight Night: Abu Dhabi

Ugly. That’s the best word to describe what just went down at UFC Fight Night 39: Nogueira vs. Nelson in Abu Dhabi, where Roy Nelson uncorked one of his famous haymakers and sent Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to the mat in a stiff heap.

And so, Big Country snaps a two-fight losing streak, and claims his seventh knockout victory in the UFC. Meanwhile, Nogueira has lost four out of his last six fights, and public calls for his retirement will surely pop again. (We’d support that, by the way.)

Check out full results from UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi after the jump. If you watched the event on Fight Pass, please share your thoughts in the comments section.

Wanderlei Silva Reportedly Out of UFC 175, Chael Sonnen Now Faces Vitor Belfort?

Chael Sonnen has always maintained that Wanderlei Silva would find away out of their grudge match. It turns out that the “American Gangster” was right.

According to a report from Combate.com, Silva did not show up for a required hearing to receive a license from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the fight and has been replaced by Vitor Belfort.

Silva and Sonnen coached opposite each other on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil, where they broke out in a well-publicized scuffle on the set during filming (watch video footage of Silva and Sonnen's tussle here). They were originally scheduled to face off at UFC 173. The bout was then moved to The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Finale. And then an injury to Silva from the on-set fight pushed the bout back to UFC 175 on July 5.

The two even promoted the fight at an International Fight Week press conference last Friday, where they once again had to be held apart by UFC president Dana White.

Belfort was originally slated to face middleweight champion Chris Weidman at UFC 173. When the NSAC banned therapeutic exemptions for testosterone replacement therapy in February, Belfort, who was on the treatment, was removed from the title fight and replaced by Lyoto Machida. Weidman required knee surgery, so the fight was pushed back to UFC 175.

And now, since Weidman and Machida has already been widely publicized as the main event, Belfort, who Combate reported as being cleared by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to fight, apparently steps in for Silva.

Sonnen has already gained clearance for the fight, according to the report, having stopped his own TRT usage once the commission banned it in February.

UFC 175 takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on July 5. The Weidman vs. Machida title fight headlines the fight card. Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey puts her title on the line against Alexis Davis in the co-main event.

While the report from Combate.com appeared credible, as the website is part of the Globo empire that is an official partner of the UFC, Sonnen on Wednesday tweeted that none of the reports about the situation were complete.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Robbie Lawler, Matt Brown, San Jose, July.

Coming off one of the most memorable performances in recent UFC history, Matt "The Immortal" Brown was looking to step up to the next level of competition after knocking off Erick Silva at Fight Night Cincinnati. The Ohio native got his wish in a big way Tuesday afternoon.

UFC President Dana White announced on Twitter that Brown is set to face No. 1-ranked Robbie Lawler on July 26 in the main event of UFC on Fox in San Jose, Calif.

Lawler is set to appear in the Octagon for the third time in just over four months when he battles Brown. Lawler is 4-1 in his last five fights and is coming off another impressive performance at UFC 173 when he TKO'd Jake Ellenberger in the third round.

Lawler's only loss in that span was a razor close decision in the UFC welterweight title fight against Johny Hendricks at UFC 171.

Dana White also confirmed that the winner of Brown-Lawler will be the official No. 1 contender and get first crack at Hendricks for the 170-pound title.

Brown is on a remarkable seven-fight win streak, six of which have come by knockout or TKO.

UFC 176: Aldo vs. Mendes 2 Has Been Cancelled

For the second time in its 21-year history, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has cancelled an event. The Las Vegas-based fight promotion announced the development on Tuesday in a statement.

“The UFC has announced that the UFC 176 Pay-Per-View event scheduled for August 2 will be postponed. The featherweight championship fight scheduled to headline the event at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles was dropped from the card last week when champion Jose Aldo sustained an injury making him unable to defend his title against No. 1 ranked featherweight Chad Mendes,” read the statement.

During the UFC 175 post-fight press conference on Saturday, UFC president Dana White said Aldo’s injuries would only sideline him for 45 days. The rematch with Mendes will take place at a later date.

“The featherweight championship fight between Aldo and Mendes is expected to take place later this year and all other fights previously slated for UFC 176 are being rescheduled for upcoming cards. The August 30 Pay-Per-View event will remain titled UFC 177: DILLASHAW vs. BARAO II at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento,” the organization said in the release.

Ronda Rousey Has Another Contender as World Champion Boxer Holly Holm Signs with the UFC

It’s unclear who UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s next challenger will be upon her return from a broken thumb and knee surgery, but there will be one more fighter vying for the option.

The signing is the culmination of months of negotiations that intermittently ran hot and cold.

White did not reveal the details of Holm’s contract. She won’t likely jump into an title shot with Rousey in her UFC debut, but Holm is sure to be on the short list if she can enter the Octagon and immediately win a fight or two.

Holm boasts a 33-2-3 professional boxing record with multiple world titles to her credit. She made the transition to MMA in 2011 and is undefeated with six of her seven wins coming by way of knockout. She is the first and current Legacy FC women’s bantamweight champion.

She trains out of the Jackson-Winkeljohn gym in Albuquerque, N.M., alongside light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, welterweight contender Carlos Condit, lightweight Donald Cerrone, and many other notables.

There was no word at the time of publication as to when, where or whom Holm would make her UFC debut against.

UFC Fight Night 45 Results: Donald Cerrone Lands Head Kick, Knocks Out Jim Miller in Atlantic City

Donald+Cerrone+vs+Jim+Miller+UFN+Atlantic+City.gif

Donald Cerrone spoiled Jim Miller's hometown advantage, knocking out the New Jersey resident in the second round of the main event at UFC Fight Night Atlantic City on Wednesday.

Cerrone showed an edge in the striking game, chopping away at Miller until a head kick ended the evening's featured bout at 3:31 of the round.

The opening round was arguably even in the beginning of the five-minute frame. Miller was able to secure takedowns, but unable to establish anything on the ground, as Cerrone got back to the feet quickly. Both fighters traded shots — Cerrone with kicks and punches, Miller with looping punches — with Cerrone getting the edge in that department towards the end of the round.

An inadvertent strike to Miller's groin highlighted the beginning of the second round. After action continued, Cerrone began to open up and land a mixture of strikes, forcing Miller to backpedal in an attempt to avoid the onslaught.

Cerrone then landed a perfectly placed head kick, knocking Miller down in an obvious daze. Adding one more punch on the ground for good measure, Cerrone was pulled off Miller, winning the bout via KO.

With the win, Cerrone improves his record to 24-6, 1 NC, and moves a step closer to jumping back into title contention. In defeat, Miller drops to 24-5, 1 NC.

Alexander Gustafsson Likely to Draw Anthony Johnson Next, Not UFC Title Shot

Alexander Gustafsson is upset that Daniel Cormier will remain in a fight with light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 182 on Jan. 3, 2015, and he has every right to be, but that doesn't mean things are going to change.

Gustafsson fell out of his rematch against Jones at UFC 178 due to an injury. Cormier stepped up and took his place for the Sept. 27 bout. Jones then fell out of the fight due to an injury of his own.

UFC officials decided to reschedule the bout for Jan. 3, but instead of reinstating Gustafsson – who will be healthy by then – they also determined that the fight will remain between Jones and Cormier.

UFC president Dana White on Thursday told UFC.com that Gustafsson sitting out isn't likely to happen either. In all likelihood, he'll be matched up with Anthony Johnson, who has been running roughshod over the 205-pound division since he returned to the UFC earlier this year.

“Gustafsson is upset, but it's not like we took Gustafsson out of the fight. Gustafsson got hurt and he's out,” White said. “Cormier stepped in and accepted the fight and this is the fight that is going to happen now.”

That didn't sit well with the Swede, who proclaimed, “It was MY fight to begin with and I WANT the fight!”

His manager, Manos Terzitane, recently told UFC Tonight that if Gustafsson wasn't going to get the fight with Jones that he would sit out and wait to fight the winner of Jones vs. Cormier.

Despite Gustafsson and his manager protesting, White said the situation would't likely play out the way the No. 1 light heavyweight contender wants.

“Gustafsson will probably fight again,” White continued. “He'll probably fight again to stay active, stay top of mind, and the guy has to make money.”

White confirmed to UFC.com that Gustafsson vs. Johnson was probably be the fight most likely to make sense for the Swede, while Jones vs. Cormier plays out.

While I can def understand AG's situation, fight fans win if these two fights happen. Right now, everyone wants to see Johnson fight the upper echelon of the division, and everyone wants to see Cormier/Jones.

I can't wait for both

UFC Fight Night 48- BISPING VS. LE

At UFC Fight Night 48 on Saturday, Michael Bisping continued his roller-coaster path toward a shot at the middleweight title.

The Englishman kept the pressure on Cung Le for more than three rounds until he finally overwhelmed the former Strikeforce champion in the fourth stanza. Bloodied and with a swollen eye from Bisping's earlier attacks, Le was forced to cover up and suffered his second knockout loss in four UFC appearances.

While retirement questions are bound to come up now when it comes to the 42-year-old Le, Bisping is probably one more big win away from putting himself back into title-shot discussion.

Benson Henderson vs. Rafael Dos Anjos: What We Learned from the Lightweight Tilt

Ending a scintillating night in scintillating fashion, Rafael dos Anjos shocked the world at UFC Fight Night 49 on Saturday when he starched former lightweight champion Benson Henderson in the first round.

A wild haymaker connected out of a scramble and sent Henderson flailing to the mat, where follow-up blows completed what was academic at that point.

The win is unquestionably the biggest of Dos Anjos' career, and it's a crippling loss for Henderson. For fans, though, it was an explosive cherry on top of a night of equally enjoyable action across the board.

What We'll Remember About This Fight

The sight of Henderson, triumphant so many times and in so many ways during his lengthy run at the top of the heap, stopped so violently. For all the times he has eked out a win on a set of scorecards, his greatest loss came in a manner that left absolutely no doubt.

Wanderlei Silva rips the UFC, announces his retirement

Wanderlei Silva will never fight again.

More than a year after his last fight inside the Octagon, and still involved a controversy with the Nevada Athletic Commission, the former PRIDE champion has announced his retirement on YouTube. And he blames the UFC for his decision.

"I am stepping down from the ring. After today, Wanderlei Silva will not fight again," he said. "My career is over. Because I don't have a stage to perform, where the athletes get the proper respect. For these reasons, I have had enough.

"They tried to turn my fans against me. My fans, who have followed me for 20 years, before this promotion even existed I was already fighting in Brazil. I have fought bare-knuckle and I helped building this sport. Everything you see today, I helped build with my sweat and blood."

Silva, who hasn’t fought since an epic second-round knockout victory over Brian Stann, ends his MMA career with a professional record of 35-12-1 with one no-contest.
(He'll be in Bellator by the end of the year)

Anthony Johnson suspended indefinitely by UFC

Anthony Johnson has been put on the sidelines by the UFC.

"We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Johnson. As a result, we are suspending him indefinitely. We are using a third-party law firm to conduct a formal investigation and once we have more information, we’ll determine whether further course of action is necessary," the UFC said in a statement.

The statement comes shortly after Bloody Elbow released a report about Johnson's past with domestic violence. He allegedly struck a woman in 2012, and knocked out two of her teeth, but the woman declined to press charges.

He was also faced multiple charges in 2009, according to the report, including domestic violence. He pleaded "nolo contendere" in 2010 to a misdemeanor of domestic violence and was sentenced to three years probation.

Following the news, Johnson posted this statement on his Facebook page:

The sh*t ppl will say and the lengths ppl will go just to tell a F*cking lie is ridiculous. That's all I'm going to say and thank you all for the support and positive feedback that I'm getting.

Johnson has won eight straight fights, including two straight since his return to the UFC. He had been trying to get a No. 1 contender fight arranged with Alexander Gustafsson in the light heavyweight division.

Chris Weidman Sidelined, Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler Rematch Now Headlines UFC 181

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday announced that middleweight champion Chris Weidman has been injured and forced out of his fight with Vitor Belfort on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas.

Weidman, according to UFC officials, suffered a hand injury in training, leaving him unable to compete at UFC 181.

Making lemonade out of lemons, the UFC acted swiftly, replacing the Weidman vs. Belfort main event with the return of welterweight champion Johny Hendricks, who will rematch Robbie Lawler in the new UFC 181 headliner.

Hendricks won the then-vacant welterweight championship by defeating Lawler at UFC 171 earlier this year in March.

Lawler earned a second shot at Hendricks and the belt by winning back-to-back bouts over Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown, while Hendricks was on the mend from a torn biceps muscle.

Hendricks recently gained clearance to return to fighting, but the question then became when the UFC could slot the fight with Lawler into its already loaded schedule, as the Hendricks vs. Lawler bout is one that the company wanted to headline a pay-per-view event.

UFC 181 will be co-headlined by the lightweight title bout between champion Anthony Pettis and top contender Gilbert Melendez, following their run as head coaches on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Tickets for the newly revised UFC 181: Hendricks vs. Lawler II go on sale to the general public this Friday with UFC Fight Club members getting an early shot at tickets on Wednesday. The tickets range in price from $125 up to $1,000.

Coach: Ben Henderson moving to welterweight to avoid 'irritating' weight cut

Remember when former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight titleholder Ben Henderson wanted to move up to 170 pounds for a "super fight" against Georges St. Pierre?

Well, that isn't happening anytime soon (told you so), but just because he can't get his hands on "Rush" doesn't mean "Smooth" has completely abandoned his quest to compete as a welterweight.

That's according to Henderson's coach, John Crouch, who told UFC Tonight the current weight cut is "irritating" for the ex-champ. And now that Bendo has been eliminated from the 155-pound title chase -- thanks to a (somewhat) controversial knockout loss to Rafael dos Anjos last month in Tulsa, Oklahoma -- there is no point in sticking around.

So ... when and where?

That all depends on his next fight. Henderson (21-4) intends to have one last fight as a lightweight to avoid leaving the division on a loss, so it's up to UFC matchmakers to iron out the details. A late 20015 debut in the land of (slightly) bigger men is probable.

But do you think Henderson can be a force at 170 pounds?

Jon Jones: I was dumped by Nike, lost 'six-figure' endorsement deal following UFC media brawl against Daniel Cormier

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones lost one of his biggest sponsors in wake of his UFC 178 media brawl against Daniel Cormier, which took place last month inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada (replay here).

Nike is no longer in the "Bones" business.

That's according to Jones' testimony earlier today during his disciplinary hearing in front of Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), where both he and "DC" were tasked with explaining their actions in front of a panel of commissioners.

As a result, Jones was fined $50,000 and sentenced to 40 hours of community service (more on that here), but escaped suspension and will not have any issue competing in "Sin City" when he takes on Cormier at the upcoming UFC 182 pay-per-view (PPV) event in January (details).

Assuming he's healthy.

Jones joined a very elite group of mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters after inking a deal with the sneaker and apparel giant back in 2012 (see the terms of that deal here). The multi-year partnership, according to testimony presented earlier today, was worth "six figures."

And now it's worth zero, thanks to what happened with Cormier, which is probably the deterrent the commission was looking for.
