Unpopular opinion: That Rappin' Duke song was decent and entertaining.

mo' info:

This is the Rappin' Duke now, I haven't seen dude since his music video. He called his song a novelty song. Years after the song came out, Biggie name-checked him in the song Juicy and it wasn't in a good way; however Duke's proud of that name-check. Also, he talks about what he's doing now.

Bruh, that Biggie line was a diss on the Rappin' Duke, though.

that was not a diss
It was a diss, the rappin' duke was novelty song and the rappin' duke was taking advantage of a fad genre in music. That guy rappin' wasn't even a real rapper; it was only a money grab for him. That why biggie says basically, you thought rap was going to be fad and now look at us, years later (I'm paraphrasing of course)

It wasn't disrespect like THAT

of course it was a novelty song and that man didn't make no money

and look at how far we have come but NONE of it would be POSSIBLE without all that FIRST

from Rappers Delight, Basketball, Pee Wee Herman, Nightmares etc etc...

NO ONE thought it would be what it is.

but it wasn't a direct or hurtful DISS on that man or that song like you trying to make it sound.

We LOVED that guy when that record dropped it was funny. Hell we thought he was WHITE at first!

and because I ALWAYS bring receipts.

Bro I know what I'm talking about, I was there.

It WAS never seen as a diss by anyone I know in and out of the industry.

@woodchuck @dik cashmere @Lexx Diamond am I wrong?

I think you missed the point about the Rappin' Duke not being a real rapper, that's why Biggie pointed out the song specifically because it was time many thought rap was going to be a fad and, yes, Rappin' Duke made money from that song. If he didn't make money from that song then why did they finance his music video, huh? He didn't make millions, but it was some money.

& Biggie wasn't dissing Rappin' Duke personally, but Biggie was putting that song in the line of songs who thought rap was just a joke and fad, thus Biggie name-check him and his song.

I think you're taking the issue too personally, as a kid I liked the song; however I'm referencing why Biggie used that Rappin' Duke line in 'Juicy'.

I guess you don't understand; I posted an interview earlier in this thread with the Rappin' Duke and he liked the song 'Juicy'; however, this is not about whether the Rappin' Duke liked the song or not, that does not matter. I'm talking about Biggie's intent and why he included the Rappin' Duke line in the song 'Juicy'.

In sum, "Rappin' Duke" was a novelty rap song that parodied the whole genre of rap in a jokey-jokey less serious style of music, the song featured the Rappin' Duke doing the voice of white supremist actor John Wayne rapping in a hip-hop style, essentially making fun of the genre by having a Hollywood cowboy figure try to rap; Biggie used this reference to highlight how far rap had come and how much more complex and personal his own lyrics were compared to the more lighthearted, novelty fad raps of the past. Plus, Biggie referenced it to display how rap isn't considered a fad now and it's here to stay.

I'm mad I even watched that video.
I remember him getting locked up for the 1st rape. To be honest, I thought he was still locked up for that charge.

I had no idea he had been released twice since then only to get locked up again for even worst versions of the same damn crime.
interesting how there hasnt been any controversy on whether or not his music should be canceled tho like with r kelly..hell puffy raped both women and men and no one has mentioned (as far as I know) anything about canceling his music.

I don't know anything about canceling people or their work. That bullshit only ever seems to work one way.
  • Bill Cosby fucks up .... cancel him
  • Kevin Spacey fucks up .... stop promoting him temporarily while also highlighting his great earlier work
  • Jonathan Majors fucks up .... cancel him
  • Mel Gibson fucks up .... temporary ban and then slowly work him back into the fold
Getting back to Mystikal tho, I don't understand how the man could have fallen so far.

At one point the man had the #1 panties dropper in the game. Any club speakers fom Cali to NY just had to play, "Danger! Get on the floor," and bitches would be putting drinks down and running to the dance floor.

This is the guy who's out here raping and physically attacking women. I just don't understand it at all.

Rappers have always talked about their money. Bragging and boasting is part of the art. But in the late '90s / early 2000s they took it to a ridiculous extreme.

All about the benjamins, mo money mo problems, pen and pixel album covers, bling bling etc.

Even R&B got into it with songs like "no Scrubs" and "hit em up style." Every male singer had at least two songs about giving thousands of dollars to strippers.

Because that's what was happening. The.com bubble was in full effect and a cashier at Wingstop could buy a mansion with no money down.
