Dang bro. You must have had a horrible experience. All of the place you mention are in the south.
If you are not expecting much from yourself, which your original
post seems to indicate, then just throw a dart at a map. Anywhere in the
south will likely get you what you want.
If you are quite young, which I suspect, and I were in your shoes, I would avoid the
south like the plague. And you would be avoiding the plague, actually.
Southern black people are still in 1965. My uncle kept telling me that when I first visited Mississippi.
I could not understand what he meant a first. A week or so later, there was no doubt.
Reasons: The south is super religious. Religion and common sense do not always get along.
Slavery. Supposedly over long ago, it still exists, on a psychological level. Be prepared for the first
20 something year old person to say: " you gotta dance to the tune the white man is playin'" or the
ever present " they (white folks) ain't gonna let you do nothin' like that".
Hatred of city people. Self explanatory. Trade in your BMW for a stake truck with velvet interior.
Prepare to make cutting the grass the high point of your week. This is provided you manage to survive.
As an alternative...why not consider someplace with some kind of culture that did not come out of Gone with the Wind
or Sounder?
If you gotta be south, Baltimore is a rough city, but 40 miles from DC, which is a great city. You can also get to any place in
the world from Bmore, trains, long distance buses, subway, all at your fingertips.
If I had another 40 years to spend, Bmore is about the closed south I would be. Culture is on the coasts. If you really want to live
like you are in the 3rd world, skip the south, get a passport, and go to Central or South America, or even the DR.
.
You can live very well in a few countries for less that 20K. Finding work would be hard, but you can always teach English.
Going to Atlanta is a lot like going to Detroit. Half of Detroit seems to live there now. This is not a good thing.
But the states you mentioned should just get together and form the nation of Dumbfuckistan.
I would take my chances damn near anywhere else.
In reality though, all parts of the south are not the same. Some bad, some good, just like up north.
Contrary, to your suggestion, I would never advise anyone trying to start over to do so in Baltimore. It's cool if you have a career, but starting over at zero?? Naw brah.
