What Does Alan Thicke Think of Son Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" Video?

alanthicke560.jpg

What is your earliest musical memory with Robin?

Actually, he started with some dance moves. He was a big fan of Michael Jackson and songs like "Smooth Criminal." His first effort was to work out a little video with a friend of his, Brian Austin Green. He and Brian did a video to "Smooth Criminal," as back then he was interested in busting some moves. From there, he's a very good mimic, he does a good verbal impression of me, and he was also mimicking musicians. He could do Stevie Wonder, Prince and Billy Idol, so he started doing what his favorites do as he evolved his own sound and approach to music. Way back in those early days when he was 15 or 16, I used to write a few songs with him to show him form and structure a little bit, but by the time he was 17 he was already better than me so I had to just share him with the world at that point.

actually he's selling records and not making music. that's what timberlake does. thicke original sound wasn't selling, so he ripped off a sound that did sell!

I just heard that song an hour ago. I really hope he wins and here's why... The melody is completely different, the words are completely different. If he loses, everyone with the same drum machine will be suing each other.

Probably because he only had to "license" a portion (sample) of the copyright of "Trouble Man" for "Million Dollar Baby" as opposed to the "whole song" of "Trouble Man"(which would have cost much much more). People who sample have to give up royalties. At the time, he wanted the Marvin Gaye effect, but only wanted to pay "discount" dollars. So he just sampled...

But after that album, now the CAC is trying to be slick... (it's all coming together for me now)

He doesn't want to pay royalties anymore, so he gets one of the best producers at channeling the most important aspects of a song (Pharrell = Pharoah) without seeming to infringe the Marvin Gaye copyright.

He's piggy-backing on Marvin Gaye, while reaping the rewards for himself. This was an intentional move by him (from the beginning),
and he is quite "defensive" about it due to his guilt. That's why he went preemptive and filed the law suit. To counter-attack what he knew might be coming because of his flaw-ass CAC-ass ways..

Fuck him, his decrepit ass daddy Alan Thicke, AND ALL WHO SUPPORT THIS BITCH-ASS CAC... (that means you coolio jones)
That clearly appears to be the case. Not new, but still just as despicable.

With all of the socio-economic, educational, political and legal forces leveled against us...

In many aspects, things are getting worse. I'm hoping that out of this strife and chaos will arise a new collective and individual Black pride, unity, awareness, knowledge of self and pro-activity that is based in that Black love, unity, knowledge and awareness.

If so, then we can take control of this music thing again, and demand that our BEST get the shine, while culture vultures and their dark-skinned turncoat collaborators get forced off the road.

Real shit...

And just for the Robin Thicke cum slurpers who think that this shit is ok, let me give you another example of Thicke's "genius" contribution to R&B:

--All you need is about 20 seconds of the beginning of each video--

This white boy is trying to ride the tail of a true genius, and then he wants to turn around and sue? Really??? Fuck this CAC and all who support him!!!

Robin Thicke did that remake justice. Now that is how a remake should be.

This was not a good example. Robin has always payed for his samples. There has never been an issue with him not paying for samples. Plus he is not suing Gayes family.

He is going to court in order to get a ruling on whether it was a sample. Robin offered to pay the Gaye family $100,000 when he did not have to. That money was directly to the family and not the record label who owns the masters. The family wanted more money and that is the issue.

It has been proven by many musical theorist that it was not a sample.

What does that really mean? Mariah Carey sounded a lot like Whitney Houston, Anita Baker sounded a lot like Jessica Cleaves, Freddie Jackson sounded a lot like Luther Vandros. Whenever someone comes out with a hit sound, record producers will dig us someone else to hop on the bandwagon. I will go as far as saying just about all singers are mimicking other singers that they admire. Who's VOICE are you claiming he is mimicking anyway???

1) Thicke did not remake "Trouble Man", but he made sure to capture the feel and sound of it.

2) Thicke IS suing the Gaye family. That's what this is all about. He may not be seeking monetary compensation, but he clearly requested that the Gaye family pay for his legal fees should the prosecution be successful.

3) He offered the Gaye estate a measly six figures because the royalties they could claim off of blurred lines is significantly more. I wouldn't have accepted that table-scrap of a settlement either.

And let's not pretend he offered the settlement out of the "goodness of his heart", he knows that he's dead wrong...

4) It doesn't matter who owns the masters. That's irrelevant. I think you might be speaking of the copyright, and I've already posted info that seems to indicate that the Gaye Estate may have the legal standing to seek damages.

It hasn't been addressed in court yet, so it doesn't really matter what experts YOU choose to believe have to say as of right now.

I suspect Thicke offered them money so this would not go to the court of public opinion. When that did not work, he took it there himself. I still do not see how anyone can copyright a beat. If he loses, there will be a lot of rappers suing each other.

Yep they collaborated on it and decided to TRY to extract enough elements to avoid infringement. At the end of the day, Thicke is the front runner of this mess. We will see what happens though...

Ohhh ok. Now I see what your REAL concern is. Don't worry, your favorite rapper is probably not going to have to deal with issues like this. It's not a case that is going to bring sweeping changes due to all the sampled music that's already out. This is just a case of Thicke & Pharrell trying to be slick. Let me try to paint a picture for you though:

1) Let's say Artist "A" writes and records an original song. The song is copyrighted and the artist "owns" the song. [Keep in mind that this is a very watered down version of what actually happens, just trying to keep it simple]

2) Artist B wants to either re-sing the song, or sample a portion of it.

3) Artist B must either get a full license to use the complete song, or he must get a license to use a specific portion of the song.

4) Artist B starts making money from his recording via sales, but some of the profits goes toward paying royalties to Artist "A" who owns the copyright.

5) Once a license has been issued for Artist "A's" song the first time, it is commonly not necessary for a third artist (Artist "C") to seek licensure in order to use the song for his album.

6) But because of the copyright tracking system, Artist C's song will be "linked" to Artist A's song, and will still generate royalties for Artist A.

7) Most major rap artists (and performers of other genres) are under labels that abide by the rules to prevent being sued.

8) But Thicke & Pharrell tried to re-create Marvin Gaye's song by extracting key elements from it and adding other elements to it. Knowingly trying to "beat the system".

9) Here's their problem though. That particular song they chose to rape was not only iconic, but also pretty unique even during its time.

So we're going to see what the courts have to say...

Nah, I have no favorite rappers, I hate rap. My point is, it makes no sense to try to copyright a beat.

Portions of a song are not copyrighted. The whole song is copyrighted. If you cut a slice from an orange and throw it into a blender, you are still using part of the original orange. Likewise, if you "cut a slice" from a copyright, you are still using part of the original copyright.

...so who is Robin Thicke mimicking?

Another weak-ass response. It cannot be Marvin Gaye because he sings falsetto.

For a person who has been in this thread from near the beginning, you obviously have not read much of the info or looked at some of the videos and comparisons.

Not only is it possible to mimic another's voice, you can also mimic other aspects, characteristics, or the essence of another person's being or creations. Just think about that for awhile because it's clear that you could use some brain-stretching exercises regarding this matter...

Isn't Justin Timberlake dancing around in a suit with his hair slicked back now too? Is he mimicking Justin Timberlake?

the question people especially black people should be asking is.....will this destroy any credibility he has in the black community? he's not justin timberlake. he can't run to do tv or movies. he's not really a r&b pop singer like usher or rihanna. so if he doesn't apologize, dump the lawsuit and move on, his career is basically done.

Don't nobody care about his credibility with black people. PEOPLE IN GENERAL like him and his flavor of music. That's it. He's definitely not trying to cater to black people, but he just makes music that makes PEOPLE move...

Haters??? A creative and original GRAND-MASTER of R&B...

Whoa there, GRAND MASTER? He was GOOD, I'm not doubting that at all, but there were many other before him that I would consider more of a grand master, like this dude named James Brown. You know, Godfather of soul? And if you didn't know, soul forms the basis of great R&B... probably why Kid & Play wrote a song with "I Got Soul" in the hook (Soul Man), Sam & Dave also had a song called Soul Man...

Now, here we have Pharrell whom the article refers to as "brilliant". There is no brilliance in replaying someone else's song and altering just enough notes to avoid a violation of current copyright law.

Real shit...[/B]

14, dude, where should I begin? First w/ i-moses, I definitely disagree, because it is in fact brilliant to sing a great cover (how many have outdone the original artist when doing this? Not many... see Whitney Houston for the best example probably EVER). Oh and what about Ice Cube and Today Was a Good Day?

This is what you and 14 don't understand... these artists are making music for a new generation. It is brilliant because the original artists sees their relevance and inspiration birthed into a new generation that would generally disregard their work. So if a work inspires an artist to create their own work, why all the hate? You act like the original artists gonna forever be around... which obviously they cannot be.

Yes Nona Gaye, your dad was a true musical genius. He was more gifted in practice while laying down on a couch than most of these so called stars today

We definitely don't agree on this topic, but mofo I GOT TA GIVE IT UP to you on the posting of that pic! :D

{capitalized the "you"}

Watch your back BGOL, there are CACs amongst us... Red Flag #2 for cooliojones...

Dude I love talking about black folks, and making you wonder what I could really be. I just call it like it is, but if you take off your racial blinders, you should see I'm getting at the root of the issue. Color just pollutes the conversation, and it's not about that.

Do like the Falcons and Rise Up above that homie.

GTFOH with that BS... His whole marketing PLATFORM in the beginning was toward not only black people, but specifically to black women...

His flavor of music? Guess where he got that from??? (a notable portion which he plagiarized...)

You know how the club is usually packed when it's ladies' night, and the women get free drinks before 12am? That's because where the ladies go, the men will follow...

His first hit was "Lost Without You" which he made sure to publicize was dedicated to his BLACK WIFE. Why is that important? Because if you can emotionally "mass-move" other Black Women through music, potentially you can "mass-move" the Black Race, who will "mass-move" white teenagers and their Moms and eventually create a white accepted fad... If you don't understand what I'm saying, maybe you should ask the twerking flat-back Miley Cyrus about it...

Thicke mimics us like Cacs in general mimic us (but will not admit to). Nowadays, you go to Universities that teach core principles (and beyond) of what we taught Cacs waaay back in the day (Mathematics, Chemistry, Science, Economics, etc...).

But the twist is, after they learn, they try to eradicate you and your claim as "owners of that knowledge". Over generations of time and exploitation, a white society is formed (which doesn't include your greatness; i.e. history re-written) and you are left holding a bale of cotton in your hands wondering WTF Happened???

It's not even IN you to behave as parasitic as these Cacs because you were built to be a creator... You only subjugate yourself to that type of behavior because of either the lack of knowledge, or the systematic blocking of your creativity. THEY know who you are, but YOU no longer do... Which is why you support Robin Thicke's raping of Marvin Gaye's genius CoolioJones...

I didn't watch the VMA's last night, but it's pretty clear that Cacs are trying to eradicate us from one stronghold that we have had in the last 50 or so years--- which is music. THE MIMICRY HAS BEEN PLACED INTO HIGH GEAR, AND IT"S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE WE FACE POTENTIAL ERADICATION...

Stay blind if you want to...

(of course I mean this symbolically, but the VMA's should have been symbolic enough for you to realize there is truth in what I'm saying...)

So yeah, Thicke wants everyone in general to support his endeavors. But the key is: Where does he start????

Simple. He starts with the Black Woman...

Luke released Scarred, Quad City DJ's released The Train, no one was mad at either.

First there was Brown Sugar, then there was Love & Basketball, ok we was a lil mad @ Love and Basketball but life moved on. :D

Whitney Houston sang "I Will Always Love You" which made people say "Dolly who?"

Peeps should just enjoy music for what it is unless they are just blatantly copying the music, and this is not one of those cases.

The Gaye estate should be happy if their family member's song was used for inspiration and call it a day. The lawsuit wouldn't be necessary if they didn't yap about it.

Robin released a body of work that *may* have taken influence from someone elses. Apple vs Microsoft, Pepsi vs Coke. Unless it is actually infringing, who really cares? It's good music and I accept it as such.

Did they sue the family?

Haters??? A creative and original GRAND-MASTER of R&B is being so technically and strategically plagiarized, that it creates "blurred lines" within the letter of the law. Yet you condone this behavior from one who is of the ilk of many other white performers who have acted similarly?

If you like the damn song that much, maybe you should consider where it gets 80-90% of it's elements from (not samples, ELEMENTS). Having a difference of opinion is one thing, but you're throwing up some red flags with all of that "hater" crap. Just saying...

When I said: " A creative and "original" GRAND-MASTER of R&B", I didn't mean the FIRST. I meant "original" (as in a unique creator not seen before his era, during his era, and beyond...[unless you include Robin Thicke's thieving ass]).

If you know ANYTHING about Marvin Gaye, then I dare you to prove me wrong on that...

So although your "mini-history lesson" is nice, it doesn't apply regarding my statement...
