It's a logical conclusion that all this happened because of what he's been going through. But Will Smith made the effort to walk all the way upstage to a small Chris Rock who has an entire sitcom based on him being bullied and slapped him for the entire world to see just for doing his job.

Yes the consequence should be so harsh that no one will ever think that they can walk on a stage, slap a black man in front of millions of people that was just doing his job. That is unacceptable and completely unnecessary.

This is a moot point about repercussions for Chris. Chris will get over it and life will go on per usual.

Every year the academy awards is this- comedians joking on the stars. Most times the jokes are way edgier than that lightweight shit Chris said- presumably in ignorance of Jada's condition. What he said did not make Will jump out of his chair. Will's wife's reaction did not make him do it. Of his own volition, Will Smith got up, walked over and hit Chris Rock. The underlying reason? Only Will MIGHT know. These are the things we know as fact.

After many years of dozens of comedians joking on the audience and no one attacking anyone for a joke, Will Smith was the first to do it. Everyone else, including Will, knew this is the protocol and it comes with the territory.

Had it not been for the graciousness of Chris Rock in the face of the crime committed against him, Will could have been escorted out of the awards and in to jail by police in front of the audience and the world. The Academy aimed to penalize him. His skeletons (aka uncomfortable and embarrassing moments of his marriage) have been pulled out and put on center stage. Many fans have turned against him. Whether or not his career has taken a fatal hit remains to be seen.

No there aren't repercussions to everything. Will hasn't had to spend a night in jail. Hell for assaulting a man with billions of witnesses, he got to enjoy his evening. And because of their relationship, Chris couldn't just immediately press charges and sue.

It's a difficult situation for Chris. For some, it's easy to make a decision to press charges and/or sue.

I don't know what's best for Chris. But Will absolutely can’t go on without consequences of some sort.

I think a lawsuit (settlement) would be the best course and one I think most people would understand.
