Louisiana governor says his state has the fastest growth rate of coronavirus cases in the world

(CNN)
Louisiana has the fastest rate of growth rate of coronavirus cases in the world, the state's Gov. John Bel Edwards said during a news conference on Sunday, citing a University of Louisiana Lafayette study.
Graphs provided to CNN by the governor's office show the rate of growth in the state on a steep upward trajectory similar to that of hard-hit Italy and Spain.
The state has the third highest number of cases per capita in the country -- behind New York and Washington state, Edwards said.

Acting in ‘The Walking Dead’ Didn’t Prepare Me for Coronavirus
When I couldn’t get tested after showing symptoms, I realized how close we are to a real-life apocalypse.

ATLANTA — From 2016 to 2018, I played the role of Daniel on “The Walking Dead,” a TV show that depicts the apocalypse. In the face of a zombie invasion, people fight for food and supplies and try to find hope in an atmosphere of total panic.

My character was a warrior. He defended his group, The Kingdom, against zombies and other invaders. What I didn’t know, when I finished my time on the show, was that a variant of the apocalypse would so soon be coming to my life off the screen.

From Feb. 25 to March 3, I traveled to Australia to celebrate Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras along with Sam Smith, Dua Lipa, Kesha and thousands of other revelers from around the world. We marched in a Pride parade, participated in interviews with local TV stations and attended a week of concerts, parties and dinners in celebration of L.G.B.T.Q. pride.

Though we heard reports of the coronavirus from China, we thought the virus was contained. In my last week in Australia, I started to have a mild cough and assumed it was a cold.

On March 3, I flew back to Atlanta. Someone behind me on the first leg of the flight was coughing for the entire trip. I considered getting up and moving, but the flight was full. She covered her mouth with her scarf. I wasn’t wearing a mask, nor were those around me.

Three days later, my symptoms worsened. Going for walks with my dog would leave me out of breath. I coughed at night and had difficulty breathing when I tried to sleep. I heard news that someone in my Mardi Gras group tested positive for the coronavirus.

Out of concern for my family and my community in Georgia, I started searching for a place to get tested. My doctor didn’t have the test. I called all the urgent-care facilities in Atlanta I could find, including throat and nose specialists, but none of them had the test. After calling the health department, I found one emergency room in Atlanta that had access to coronavirus testing.

I was questioned over the phone to make sure my symptoms matched. The person said that it was “very important I come get tested immediately.”

On March 14, I drove to the hospital, parked my car and entered a line of ill people that snaked out of a tent adjacent to the E.R. entrance. People in front of me had their temperatures taken and were asked questions about their symptoms. Almost everyone was told, without having been tested, that they most likely had a cold or allergies, and to go home and self-quarantine.

Kroger to provide $300, $150 bonuses to employees who've worked amid pandemic
Posted: 2:10 PM, Mar 21, 2020

Updated: 2:10 PM, Mar 21, 2020
By: Scripps National

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Kroger announced Saturday that it will provide a one-time bonus to every hourly frontline grocery, supply chain, manufacturing and customer service associate who've worked amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The company says it will give $300 to every full-time associate and $150 for every part-time associate.

"Our associates are working around the clock to keep our stores open for our customers,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger's chairman and CEO. “I am incredibly grateful for all they are doing. The true heroes in this story are our associates, and we want to provide them with additional resources and support to help them continue their remarkable effort."

The bonuses will be paid to associates who were hired on or before March 1, covers the payroll period March 8 - 28, and will be payable on April 3, according to Kroger.

The grocery company also said Saturday it will expand its COVID-19 emergency leave guidelines to include paid time off for self-isolation and symptoms as verified by an accredited health care professional. This expands Kroger’s new guidelines, which allow paid time off for associates diagnosed with or placed under quarantine due to COVID-19. In each scenario, all associates will be eligible to receive their standard pay for up to two weeks (14 days).

"We believe that by expanding our emergency leave guidelines, more of our associates can feel certain knowing that if their health is affected by or if they experience symptoms of COVID-19, they will be supported while they stay at home and recover," said Tim Massa, Kroger's senior vice president and chief people officer. "We are appreciative of all of our managers who have been working individually with associates in recognition that every associate's situation is personal. We also want to make it easier for associates to follow our guidance to stay home if they feel sick and to do our part to flatten the curve."

For those affected by COVID-19, the organization has also made additional resources available to provide financial assistance to associates who face hardship due to COVID-19, including lack of access to childcare and for those considered higher-risk.

Here’s a state-by-state breakdown of the current lockdown orders:

California

Californians awoke Friday to a new reality after the governor issued stay-at-home orders for nearly 40 million people amid the coronavirus outbreak. The move by Gov. Gavin Newsom was the first in the country in the effort to curb the pandemic.

The order was a stunning development and further blow to businesses and workers.

California is one of the hardest-hit states with 1,185 confirmed cases and 23 deaths as of Friday, reported KTLA.

Residents have been told to stay 6 feet away from others, not gather in groups and wash their hands frequently.

Connecticut

In his daily address Friday, Governor Ned Lamont announced a “Stay safe, stay at home” policy, telling all “non-essential” businesses and not-for-profit entities to stay closed for an indefinite time period, beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 23.

He is asking that all businesses that can have employees work from home do so, according to WTNH.

Delaware

Gov. John Carney has issued a stay-at-home order due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to Delaware Public Media.

The order goes into effect Tuesday morning. It requires all non-essential businesses to close.

Illinois

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s “stay-at-home” order is set to begin Saturday afternoon and go until April . According to WGN, the order will mean residents can still go to the grocery stores, put gas in their cars, take walks outside and make pharmacy runs.

All local roads, including the interstate highways and tollways, will remain open to traffic, as well. Delivery works should still report to work, the governor said.

Businesses such as gyms, spas, salons, barber shops and tattoo parlors must close by Saturday.

Louisiana

On Sunday, Governor John Bel Edwards issued a statewide “stay at home” order.

The order itself is slated to go into effect at 5 p.m. on March 23, according to WGNO. The order will stay in place through Monday. April 13.

Massachusetts

Governor Charlie Baker has ordered all non-essential businesses to close, effective noon Tuesday, March 24.

The governor also announced Monday that he and state health officials are issuing a stay at home advisory for the residents of Massachusetts.

Both will remain in effect until April 7, according to WWLP.

Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a stay-at-home order for Michigan residents.

The order is expected to last at least three weeks, according to WOOD-TV.

New Jersey

On Saturday, Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order telling all residents to stay at home until further notice.

The order includes some exceptions like obtaining essential goods, seeking medical attention, visiting family, reporting to work or enjoying outdoor activities.

The order mandates work from home arrangements when possible and prohibits all social gatherings.

New York

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is ordering all workers in nonessential businesses to stay home and banning gatherings statewide. Cuomo announced the restrictions Friday that take effect Sunday, according to WTEN in Albany.

He also says nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size or for any reason are canceled or postponed. The Democratic governor took the dramatic actions as confirmed cases in New York climbed to more than 10,000 as of Saturday.

I found that too. Even the advertised flyer sales weren't much to look at. Had they done any major sales/savings, they'd (major stores) probably be even more crowded & ridiculous. Not what they want.
