Throwback Music: Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne & others - While My Guitar Gently Weeps UPDATE: Director's Cut 2021

17 years after this stunning performance by Prince, I finally had the chance to go in and re-edit it slightly - since there were several shots that were bothering me. I got rid of all the dissolves and made them all cuts, and added lots more close ups of Prince during his solo. I think it's better now. Let me know what you think. - Joel.

someone on the board posted the backstory on this performance
there were problems at the rehearsal and prince got pissed and went back to his hotel
he wouldn't come back to the rehearsals.
the dude in the black hat playing the electric guitar had dissed respected prince at the first rehearsal
so they weren't sure if he would show up that night
when they would call him all he would say is that it will be alright
if you watch the vid you can see him smiling a in mockery of the other dude
i can't find the original article as told by one of the dudes on stage but here is another that doesn't get specific

Man this brother was one of the baddest cats to ever play. He killed this solo!!
Prince just blacked out on them fools Dahni and Petty were in awe looked like they was gonna have a seat and just watch Prince work. Magical performance
Alright...1006 times now. :yes: :guitar03::ipod:
This was amazing. Utterly amazing. Hearing it is only one thing but watching Prince come in and just take the fucking thing over with one of the most beautiful displays guitaring masterpieces

Also, I fucks with Tom Petty for real. Unlike many white performers oh, Tom Petty on numerous occasions went above and beyond giving black artists their love for their talents that he benefited from.

So many times with white people they get Rick Santorum. I got here on my own I learned this shit by myself, before I got here there was no guitaring no music and I built this myself. Tom Petty was like "nah, this person this black person this black person this black person this black person this black person this black person did all this so I can be here. Nothing but respect"

word I digs Tom Petty for that and the guitar break in American Girl still gets cranked in the crib and the whip

Yes I remember this story. That dude in the black hat is Jeff Lynne from Electric Light Orhcestra. Originally Prince was supposed to do all the soloing but Jeff didn't want that,that's where the friction came,and Prince went back to the hotel and came back and SLAYED ALL THEIR ASSES AND THEN LEFT!
Loved the way he kept looking in his direction while slaying the FUCK out of that guitar!

Eric Clapton has a version on Youtube aswell but Prince's version kills it in views. The comments are hilarious from butt hurt CAC's. Can we get a review from resident musicians on the board. I would like to hear your perspective on the performance.

wow... way to much to say about this performance but i'll try. Easily the best prince performance I've seen. He made a big ass statement that he is not to be fucked with. Nobody was fucking with prince on that stage. He even threw in the required ugly guitar faces too boot. Never missed a licked, stay in the groove, slid right past them and out shown them without a sweat. Thank GOD none of them tried to match or catch prince. I've watched that track over and over again and it still gives me goosebumps how easily he bodied the track, the stage and erased any doubt, he was not too be played with!!

Hell yeah! Prince was shooting daggers and casting shade during that whole solo performance. :hmm::yes:

:lol::lol::lol:
I get chills listening. Eric Clapton's version is good, but after hearing Prince's version...no comparison. and prince was pissed and motivated to bitch slap Jeff Lynne and he did just that

Seen this over and over. Never knew the backstory, just knew by the look on his face, he came to kick ass and take names and he did just that. One of the greatest solos I've ever seen. Was truly one of his best, up there with the superbowl halftime show....in a fucking thunderstorm!!!! and the purple rain tour performance. Pure, unadulterated talent!
