BGOL Artists, I need your help for a book cover (Porn Inside)

I am at the precipice of completing this novel edit.

I've got 23,000+ words. I'm hoping to publish- Side Piece: Naughty Nurse Chronicles Volume 1 before March.

Novel progress: Complete
Editing point: page 13 of 53

I still need a book cover.

I know we have some artists in here and I am enlisting your help. @Drayonis I know is one, and I know there are many more

The characters within the novel are black, but the problem is a rather large faction of white people are racist and if there are black people on the cover they don't want to have shit to do with it

Studies have shown, see article below, that white people don't buy books with black people on the cover.

So we trick them. An artists depiction of a nurse in Scrubs without showing her ethnicity

They get it for the freaky story, find out later the author and characters are Black. By then it's too late

I'm not trying to get my books relegated to the urban section of the library that nobody goes to.

Ty Robertson should be next to Nora Roberts

***

I need a book cover. A nurse, a stethoscope over her shoulder with a Scrubs top with a dolphin undershirt/tank top but I don't want the race of the nurse shown (ambiguity)

The title is: Side Piece: Naughty Nurse Chronicles Volume 1
I haven't decided on the font for the cover so if you could provide one with and one without the title on the cover allowing me the possibility to add it later if I don't like the one you choose

Instructions:
Show the Scrubs top, the stethoscope slung over the shoulder, slim frame, maybe even blue latex gloves, just don't show the neck or wrists. Long sleeves if you can't find another way to hide her ethnicity

If she's wearing a dolphin undershirt/tank top that will hide the neck. Give her a badge on her left side "RN" (in big red letters) and beneath that in black letters "Asst. Nurse Manager"

Something like Nurse Carla

Black Faces on Covers Don't Sell Books?
Black Faces on Covers Don't Sell Books?
Looks like book publishing isn't all that post-racial, but we already knew that. A controversy has been brewing regarding the book cover for "Liar," a young adult novel by Justine Larbalestier that's set to publish at the end of September by Bloomsbury Children's Books.

The cover (see right) features a young white girl whose faced is partially covered by her long straight hair. The problem? The book's main character is black. And actually, as the author, who is a white Australian, explains on her blog, "Micah is black with nappy hair which she wears natural and short." Yes, nappy.

Larbalestier also provides several reasons why Bloomsbury's actions are wrong on so many levels:Every year at every publishing house, intentionally and unintentionally, there are white-washed covers. Since I've told publishing friends how upset I am with my Liar cover, I have been hearing anecdotes from every single house about how hard it is to push through covers with people of colour on them.

Editors have told me that their sales departments say black covers don't sell. Sales reps have told me that many of their accounts won't take books with black covers. Booksellers have told me that they can't give away YAs with black covers.

Authors have told me that their books with black covers are frequently not shelved in the same part of the library as other YA-they're exiled to the Urban Fiction section-and many bookshops simply don't stock them at all. How welcome is a black teen going to feel in the YA section when all the covers are white? Why would she pick up Liar when it has a cover that so explicitly excludes her?

The notion that "black books" don't sell is pervasive at every level of publishing. Yet I have found few examples of books with a person of colour on the cover that have had the full weight of a publishing house behind them. Until that happens more often we can't know if it's true that white people won't buy books about people of colour.

All we can say is that poorly publicised books with "black covers" don't sell. The same is usually true of poorly publicised books with "white covers."Are the big publishing houses really only in the business of selling books to white people?

Hmm, great question. The seemingly obvious answer is, no of course not! But it's incidents like this that make you wonder. Especially when Larbalestier’s publishing company had this to say to Publishers Weekly: "The entire premise of this book is about a compulsive liar," said Melanie Cecka, publishing director of Bloomsbury Children's Books USA and Walker Books for Young Readers, who worked on Liar. "Of all the things you're going to choose to believe of her, you're going to choose to believe she was telling the truth about race?"

Even teen bloggers are sniffing through this crappy explanation. Yet I can't say I'm surprised by such ridiculous reasoning. The publishing world is in an incredible state of denial and delusion. And until it decides to come clean about its issues, including its unprogressive treatment and understanding of race, we'll continue to see white faces where ones of color need, should, and deserve to be.

Is it Hard for Black Literary Fiction to Find an Audience?

Amazingly enough, the Wall Street Journal recently ran a profile of Victor LaValle whose new book "Big Machine" drops next month. In the piece, Chris Jackson, editor extraordinaire (It’s hard to name another black male editor of his stature in book publishing) asserts the fact that it's a hard road to publish and promote literary fiction by black writers. He says, "Black writers don't have a support network that helps them publish their short stories, and the encouragement they get is often for familiar material." I agree.

I would also point to the above cover debacle to provide additional explanations. Often, publishers don't know what to do with literature that doesn't fall into a box—street lit, erotica; you get my drift—especially when it's by black and brown people.

LaValle's highly imaginative pen doesn't lend itself to any of these categories. His friend and fellow author Mat Johnson described what LaValle’s does as “horror movies with literary fiction.”

LaValle is surely not the only writer facing this predicament. What's the answer? I don't necessarily have it. Or perhaps an answer doesn't suffice. Perhaps finding ways to connect great literature with audiences is a movement that requires the participation of publishers, authors, writers, and readers alike.

we need to find creative ways to connect books with people of all ages, period. And black boys are no different in that regard.

Congrats bruh! Always dug your writing style. Not an artist, but hope you find one here. Lastly, considering that you don't want your work relegated to the "urban section", have you thought about replacing the word "side piece?" It's more of an urban or black term. I know "Other Woman" or "Mistress" is probably over-used. Just a thought. I will support your project.

I did think about that, but I believe naughty nurse Chronicles will overshadow that urban language bit

I could just go with Naughty Nurse Chronicles Volume 1. What do you think?
If you're going for universal appeal, "Naughty Nurse Chronicles Volume 1" is the best choice.

Thank you. I will rock with that

I've already got the volume two in mind

A female co-worker uncovers the ruse and wants a threesome

I can go as far as I want with this series. Even have the protagonist ask her husband about joining The Lifestyle further down the line

In today's climate, you can probably be just as successful marketing it black folk....only.

I think it is always good for an expert to review for authenticity....let me recommend @Bullet ....

Bro, I've been in and around the Lifestyle for a minute. The vast majority of the stories I'm gonna tell aren't even mine.

At these parties people like to talk, brag, whatever and they just go. Add some liquor to it and they tell you their whole story from the first time the did "X" to some bi shit they did at their wife's request

One dude was telling me story after story as the both of us was watching his wife get fucked by 4 dudes.

I'm not gonna repeat the stories here, but it was on some cuckold shit. I'm gonna tap into that market.

At the last party I went to back in December, I told one of the stories I was told and halfway through dude said, "Yo man, for real. I'm not even into the kind of kinky shit that you telling, but both me and my girl are at the edge of the bed hanging on every word

You sitting on a goldmine there, man. Cuz the way you tell that story, and all the details and shit. I gotta kick all y'all out so I can handle my lady right quick"
:roflmao3:

I'm like the Griot. Folks tell me stories and I just listen, then re-tell those stories at a later date.

And I'm going to do my own audio book!

Remember what Eddie Murphy did in Dolomite with those old wino's stories? Added a little detail here, more detail there and made the stories his even though they weren't

Hell yes...you are on to something....

Also, think about making that shit an audio book so that both hands free ...while listening to the story......LOL

Do you know anyone that has reached out for possible t-shirt designs?

(sorry for hijackin')
One of my Boys did a couple of years ago. He had several people work on a t-shirt design, then he chose one. It was for his Family Reunion.

That's how I heard about them...

Appreciate the feedback ...

I have a few ideas I've been half-steppin' on but trying to focus in the New Year here. I heard Fivver was really good for that. Just wondering how the back and forth goes when trying to convey my idea(s) to the artist. Guess I'll find out.

Yo! The benefit of the Lifestyle is watching the whole interaction while I'm telling the story.

His girl was wearing a short skirt and sitting to his left when I started. I only got halfway through the story before I was cut off and kicked out

But 10% in she had her legs open and he was fingering her. Her eyes were closed and her head was back, but he was looking at me intently listening to the story.

By the time I got to the threesome part it was "Get to steppin" because he had to knock off his girl

I could tell that the other females in the room were hot as well. One of the two was playing with herself, but she was lesbian so I wasn't getting any there

It's wild watching people being turned on by the story you're telling as you're telling it

Why use a person in the art at all? Most best selling fiction novels rarely have a person on the cover. Why not just an all Blk background some S&M stuff like cuff and a whip with a nurse's hat or outfit laying next to it? It's all about the reader's imagining themselves as the character in the book.

Like maybe a nurse's hat on top of some high heels? I'm open for examples bro. Don't hold back. The more people I can reach with the cover, the better

What would you change/fix?
I'm no expert by far.
But, I like the font on the second one way better. It looks a little more professional.

I would use darker colors as well. Sex is kind of associated with the night time to me (especially kinky stuff). I would use colors like Black, Burgundy, dark Blues, and Grays; mysterious type of colors if that makes sense.

Also, if you ask 100 hundred people what they like, you're going to get 100 different answers. I would say go with your gut. Go and look at a lot of romance novel covers and other media like that.

You can also look at a "Color Wheel" and get a different combination of complimentary colors that go well together.

Congrats on your project brother! I'll be one of the first to make a purchase when it hits the market! As for your cover, use symbols. They're universal and you won't need an artist. Just a good photographer. Use a provocative representation of illicit sex and the nursing profession. Back in the day media used a lot of symbols on book covers, movie poster etc. You can gain a lot of ground with just the representations of sex. Get a stethoscope and/or some common tools of the nursing trade and intermingle it with some thong panties, high heel shoes, etc with some creative lighting that casts the perfect shadows over the entire collage. Fix it up however you want. But you don't need anyone to draw. Just take some great closeups and you should be good to go. Here's a couple of examples:

I like this idea...

Phones now a days have high powered cameras. You'd be surprised as to what you can accomplish with them and may be a filter or two.

Exactly. And symbols can be pretty much race neutral.

That could absolutely work. Again, its all about the lighting, placement, presentation, etc. The color of the title text is important too. You can mix it up in a lot of different ways and post em' for the board to judge.

Light and shadows can make or break your pic, so take your time... set the right mood.

You can purchase a piece of velvet, and use it to rest your items on seductively, and you're in the game.
I'd even add a glass of wine/champagne or something like that.

Certain fruits work too. Like Eve bit the apple; peaches, strawberries you know what I mean. It's all inference.

I never post but this is intriguing and congrats! Other options…high heels don’t always say naughty but some red high heels against the otherwise dark background may pop. Maybe a stethoscope hanging over the red heels. Maybe a thong or garter as an additional layer? Depending on how “naughty” you talking…a flogger. Since the in thing is nurses taking mid-shift selfies showing the butt plug (Glory to Zod) they’ve worn all shift…maybe a bejeweled plug?
