Sheeeeeeeiiit. $7000 on a cat?

I hear you, G'.

My dad had to take our family dog for emergency surgery back around 1990 or 1991. Took him to his favorite trail and was throwing sticks for him to retrieve. His favorite downhill path. Anyway ... dog ran down and unfortunately caught himself on a recently trimmed stump of an old tree. Tore himself up pretty good & basically his fur was peeled back like an open jacket & luckily he didn't puncture any major arteries. Dog was quietly in shock and dad went down there and scooped up him and walked him out of the trails (about 2km) and raced him to an animal hospital. He was able to get him a staff discount as he knew a friend who worked at the SPCA and also part-time at the animal hospital. Surgery was something like $1000 - 1100 over 30+ years ago. He got a 15% discount to save some $150 from that total.

Dad jokingly said - "I am glad the dog survived, and I'm glad he's a GREAT dog. But damn ... he was $65 at the SPCA some 2 - 3 years ago. Now this ..."

He was supposed to meet up with family and relatives at a downtown Chinese restaurant, and ended up showing up a few hours late. We didn't have a cellphone we could reach him on, and were worried something bad happened to him. He showed up and was like - "So yeah ... that was a terrible experience. The dog almost died on me running his favorite route in the trails."
