The video — which by Friday officials had described as “a very important piece” of evidence in moving forward with criminal charges — was first posted by WGIG, a local radio station in Brunswick, Ga., which said it had obtained the footage from an anonymous source.


But in a twist emblematic of the small-town politics that have defined the case, that source turned out to be a criminal defense lawyer in town who had informally consulted with the suspects.

The lawyer, Alan Tucker, said in an interview on Friday that the video had come from the cellphone of a man who had filmed the episode and that he later gave the footage to the radio station. Mr. Tucker’s role was confirmed by Scott Ryfun, who oversees the station’s programming.

Asked why he had leaked the video, Mr. Tucker said he had wanted to dispel rumors that he said had fueled tension in the community. “It wasn’t two men with a Confederate flag in the back of a truck going down the road and shooting a jogger in the back,” Mr. Tucker said.

“It got the truth out there as to what you could see,” he added. “My purpose was not to exonerate them or convict them.”

The man who shot the consequential video of Ahmaud Arbery’s killing is now receiving threats amid cries for his arrest, his attorney said.

The revelation comes after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed the identity of the videographer, William “Roddie” Bryan, and announced he is under investigation.

“Mr. Bryan, his fiancee, his children, his siblings and other family members, friends and neighbors now live in fear despite the fact that Mr. Bryan has committed no crime and fully cooperated with the investigation into the shooting,” Bryan’s attorney, Kevin Gough, said in a statement to First Coast News in Glynn County Friday.

Bryan, a neighbor of accused killers Greg McMichael and his son Travis, captured video of the Feb. 23 shooting while trailing Arbery from his vehicle.

The video ignited mass public outcry when it leaked to the public earlier this month, leading to the McMichaels’ arrest.

Gough said Bryan has now lost his job, and disputed claims he was armed during the dispute.

I think about how difficult it must be for Black men not just in America but all across the world. To think about the fear that they face when dealing with a police officer coming near them or to think about the mental trauma they must undergo when putting on a pair of shoes to simply go for a jog... it troubles my heart so much. I'm curious and maybe I don't have most of the facts, but why did William Roddy Bryan give this video to the lawyer to release to the local news station in the first place? Without it, they would've gotten away scot free. Turning it over, as the sole piece of evidence that could lead to a conviction, would've ENSURED their arrest, and here we are.
