Any BGOL dudes into gardening?

Now see that's what's up! We got these dirty ass MidWestern humming birds around here! I showed my daughter the humming bird that would frequent our garden and she was like; 'That's not a humming bird! They aren't brown!'

Those gardens are bad ass, I don't see how someone takes a hour long video of shyt like that! 10-20 minutes to get an idea, but I am not watching all that through my phone while I am standing in it.

Agreed. Initially it catches you a bit off-guard when the hummingbirds fly real close to your table. Don't want to lose an eye, lol. But they don't bother you any - and that setting and view are spectacular.

I hear you re: peoples' uploads.

I took about 10 - 15 pictures, and a few 30-second to 1-minute videoclips to share with friends and family back home. It's all about the experience and being in it instead. So peaceful there ... walked by a few of the staff & grounds crew and gave them props on the work they do maintaining the place.

Definitely going to head back there if & when we visit PV again.

Fcuk you, you rich motherfcuker!!! I have been to Mexico multiple time too!!! Granted I had to pay for them out of my own pocket while concealing battery sized balloons through different ends of my body...at least I THINK I went multiple times...I just remember feeling a snap in my stomach and fizzy sensation and the next thing I remember is waking up in the Rio Grande naked and covered in someTHING else's blood.

Damn. SomeTHING else's blood, lol. Wild!

Side note - a few people I knew in my teens and early-20s got caught up with smuggling. Arrested at the airport, etc.

I claim to not be any kind of master gardner. I know enough to birth and maintain, that's it! But could you imagine picking that crews brain? Like they HAVE to be able to give a Master Class on some of the shyt they know!

I think the temp' is what makes it too (PV). It's warm-hot, but not overbearing. Comfortable.

Whereas with Zihuatanejo ... that heat is intense. Only got in the water near sunset. Can't be out in that midday heat. Gotta lay low. If the botanical gardens were there, it would be a less enjoyable experience as you'd be constantly looking for shade cover.

Agreed. All the different types of plants / species. Some of the wildlife they see, etc. The only little mistake I made on the 2nd visit there was chilling down near the river. Didn't realize the bugs or sand fleas (? - I dunno) were present. Didn't feel any bites or itchiness. Didn't see anything either. Come to find out that night my calves are chewed up. We were leaving the next day, so I was wearing pants for the flight home after a week plus of shorts & tees.

Regarding gardening ... my dad's always liked doing stuff around his yard, etc. He retired around 2009 and in the early-2010s took a night school course / program to be a "landscape technician" ... he enjoyed that. Learned more about stuff of interest, and was able to help out some friends with their gardening and landscaping too.

He's got a challenging property. Small house, but it has a bunch of stairs leading up from the front street, and a bunch more at the back to the elevated back alley. Moving around in the yard is a workout due to the incline and rectangular shape of the property. Get pretty winded when you help him with yardwork and we've encouraged him to downsize over time, but it's the first property he bought and he moved back there after getting divorced in the mid-90s.

That's what's up! At some point you're gonna have to get him one of those riding mowers or at the very least a self-propelled lawn mower. The little hills I have with my self-paced mower can be a bytch!

I felt bad cause my wife's friends daughter went to school to be a landscape tech and we made all these promises to hire her to do our landscaping and one day just planning out some stuff, I ended up doing ONE thing and never stopped. I try to throw as much business I can her way but I TOTALLY fcuked over a kid fresh out of college with promises of work!

It's all good. I'm sure she understands.

Yeah - fortunately dad only has a small bit of grass in the front yard, and the part at the back he just cleared out and put bark mulch down and some potted plants, etc. The rest of the front yard on either side slopes down and has ivy and other trees and shrubs. He had a bunch of ivy along the front boulevard but cleared that out and put in mulch there too and also a rockery.

Funny side note ... did a bunch of yardwork / small landscape jobs growing up in my teens and early-20s. Best part of that job was setting your own hours and rate of pay. Often anywhere from $15 - 20 an hour as a teen in the mid-90s. Pretty good money. Close to home too. I worked for one of my dad's friends (friend of his from AA) in the summer one year and that was the hardest work I've ever done. For $7 an hour, lol. Learned alot - but realized how tough it was long-term. We were planting lawns, building a waterfall, laying a brick basketball court, planting trees, building a walkway, etc. Went back to school that fall and people thought I was juicing all summer on some type of roid cycle. I assured them I was clean, but exhausted from that June - August stretch.

Nice!!!!!!!!!

What flowers are those?

Think I lost my lawn. The heat and lack of watering have the grass crunching and breaking up under my feet. Waiting till end of aug when the temps drop to see if there is life before I plan for a fall seeding.

The apples and plums are coming in at work. Apples are a bit sour and bitter yet, but they are great later in summer. Plums are my fave. They’re the firm type and don’t get overly messy or juicy. One coworker noted they saw a raccoon stealing the majority of the damn strawberries.

My brother currently has a friend renting space at his house. Good tenant and has helped him grow a bunch of lettuce. Apparently they could feed the whole block with the current yield, lol.

Those are Petunias. I've learned over the years that switching up what I plant there year after year helps keep the soil nutrient and acidity levels compatible each year. We planted impatiens last year and begonias the year before that. Soil acts funny if you just plant willy nilly. :dunno:

have you considered planting perennials? or a lavender hedge?

That was my main thing with annuals and my neighbor does annuals every year. But she like redoing that every year. Granted with my lillies I have to dig up the bulbs and replant to get the bulbils off during the fall
Squirrels and other vermin always dig up and eat most of my bulbs leaving mass bare spots. Is that why you remove and replant them each year?

I have a few annuals in my back yard but they aren't as colorful it seems to me. I did have some tulips in the front for years but they stopped coming up a few years ago. I may plant a few of them again in front of the evergreens.

my mother kept her annuals near walkways and stayed with spring and autumn bloom
but perennials she kept near the house and around bush or hedges and staggered for blooms late spring through autumn

My grandma (dad's side) had a similar layout at her place. Grandpa was big on gardening - he had pumpkins, peas, cucumbers, zucchini & tomatoes. My dad's parents. Never met mom's parents as they passed before I was born. They had a small corner laneway house.

Pre-emergent starting now. Prodiamine or dimension

Dont have weeds at the moment because I've used spectracide and weed n feed combo. Preemergent would prevent me from overseeding. The thinning from heat exposed a lot of spacing that needs filling in. Looking for a fescue blend that has high drought tolerance.

Don't you want to wait until late fall for that? Also what do you think about prodiamine or dimension versus tenacity?
Depends on what kinda grass and what zone you're in.

Warm season: bermudagrass, zoysia grass, etc. I use prodiamine, wait until the temps are under 80 tho and even then use at a low rate to not cause turf injury during hot summer.
