Greets BGOL Fam,

I started working on my screenplay last week. I'm thirty pages into it already. I slowed down because there was a lot of things/terms I didn't know, so I'm learning as I go as well.

I posted a "logline last week. I received some great feedback from @raze, and it made me concentrate on refining the logline more.
I went to IMDB and looked at some of the loglines there. I'm looking at "Sluglines" as well.

So, I'm in it to win it, Fam. Here's the latest logline.

Logline (revision):

"After accepting an apparently benign gift,
a real estate broker unknowingly triggers a
series of mystical events which lead to a lethal
confrontation between himself and a murderous
religious zealot who’ll do whatever it takes to
claim the relic for a supernatural entity."

Hmmmmm..this has me interested because this can go either way. It can be a comedy (Golden Child) or a thriller. Cant wait to see what happens.

This is better, but your logline should be 25-30 words max. Anything more is venturing into synopsis territory. A few days ago, I posted the loglines from the 80+ scripts that made the 2024 Black List

Not all of them are great but they're actual loglines instead of the one-sentence summaries you'll find on the imdb. Study how they're put together.

Also, this is a slugline:

INT. GROCERY STORE - DAY

This is a tagline:

"In space, no one can hear you scream."

Taglines are mostly for movie posters, DVD/Blu-ray covers, and commercials.

You're headed in the right direction but you're only thirty pages in. Figuring out the logline isn't a priority at this point. Finish the script first. Once completed, you'll have a better idea of what to highlight in the logline. Trust me, your script will change, it might not resemble what you originally planned.

It took me a while to write that logline. I know it needs to be shortened some more, but I like it better than the first one. I'll work on it soon though.

I'm going to attempt to finish at least ten pages tomorrow. I already know the ending, so I'm going to be concentrating on the middle for now.

Thanks again, Bro.

It took him two weeks because he's the writer, producer, director etc...
He doesn't need anyone to green light the project.

He could scribble the story on a napkin and use that as a guide and no one would care.

It's not about needing anyone to greenlight a project. Writing is hard. Even under the best circumstances, two weeks is not enough time to write a quality screenplay. Maybe it could work for a formulaic, low-budget genre film, but a WWII drama?

Still, I'm sure it will debut at number one on Netflix, and at the end of the day, he's giving Black actresses jobs and shining a light on Black American history.

This sounds like a great streaming flick or even series.

I'm curious if this has any comedy to it?

If its mostly straight?

I could easily be a big early summer hit and potential franchise.

The casting will be critical in this

They need Taylor Sheridan level Hollywood alumni. I think you cast Josh Brolin or Pedro Pascal as the dad and a light skin Black or mixed mom like Halle or Zoe Saldana and Josh Rivera as the son
I'm sitting here trying to cast this movie based on the "feel"'....serious vs. serious/comedy

Serious/Comedy

White Cast
Husband: Ryan Reynolds
Wife: Sandra Bullock
These two had GREAT chemistry in the proposal

Son: I don't know enough young white actors: Timothee Chamelet? Could possibly make it a daughter too

Black Cast:
Husband: Jamie Foxx
Wife: Kerry Washington
Son: DC Young Fly ( I just want to see these two on screen together lol)

Serious
White Cast:
Husband: Liam Neeson (he can do comedy too in playing the straight man, but i think this would be great)
Wife: Julia Roberts (she can do funny too)
Son: Tom Holland

Black Cast
Husband: Denzel Washington
Wife: Angela Bassett
Son: John David Washington

I need a minute to process that.

So at this point creatives like you?

Are just CONTENT CREATORS.

Nothing more

Yup. And hopefully, build a big enough buzz to get bigger talent or a production company to wanna partner with you to scale it. I had a meeting with two WME Agents back in June (one recently moved to Amplified, the group of agents that broke off from the big boys) and was told it was over for me thinking of myself as a writer or producer. Said I have to look at myself as a media company because doing it all is the only way from now on.

Basically, think of yourself as Issa Rae. She can do it all.

Thanks fam. And I'm pulling for all of yall as well. The game got nasty, but I really do believe original ideas and passion are gonna win out after all this AI shit settles. People are gonna get tired of the mediocre paint-by-numbers media.

I disagree with this one bro.

People will NEVER tire of that. You could argue THAT is what sustains and has sustained the industry day to day.

Soap operas Sit coms procedurals sequels franchises game shows reality shows for better or worse provided thousands on all levels in the industry with VERY steady work for decades.

We gotta find a happy medium

because we are getting dangerous close to EVERYTHING being EXACTLY the cookie cutter sh*t factory you are talking about.

But like I always say if the AUDIENCE continues to SUPPORT it?

WTF are artists like YOU supposed to do?
