Anyone On Here Play The Guitar/Bass?

Him & Marq Jefferson, among others, laid some sweet basslines for the Dungeon Fam. Craziest thing to me, was Marq's bassline on "Waterfalls" by TLC. It was totally freestyled. He had no plan going in, so he doodled along until something hit him. That doodling is what's on the record. He used a Ken Smith 6 string.

I asked him if he can still play it, and he said he'd have to practice, but he could still do it. He said it would be difficult, because it wasn't planned.
Makes sense. Seems like some of the most iconic riffs are made on the spot. I hear a lot of muscians say don't be too technical with theory. Just play and go with what sounds good. Go with feel. Don't overthink stuff like flat the 3rd and all that.

"Glide" by Pleasure started off as a finger exercise. The engineer heard it and wanted to record it. So was the beginning of "Boogie Nights". When I had to learn it, I asked Keith Wilder (RIP) what the hell was Mario thinking when he came up with that opening riff, and he told me he was just practicing, and Rod Temperton wanted it on the song. That beginning is a bitch to play. It's not your typical walking bassline. When you get a chance, plug in and try it. That shit will drive you mad!

I have a bass player up here named monster. He does everything the same way. He’s been on a few new joints I been working on

I'm still fucked up trying to get that Barney Miller theme down with the right tempo. Seems like I trip over myself with the 1st breakdown.

Boogie Nights took me a minute to learn back in the day but I got it. A lot of local cats didn't play it correctly. It is a good finger exercise to do in every key. Another tough one was the intro to Rigor Mortis by Cameo. I got a lot of bass players fired because no one took the time to properly learn songs.

I gotta try Boogie Nights

Question fellas. For my home studio, when I get my audio interface I'm thinking about connecting my Gallen-Kruger bass amp to that as well as the pedals instead of having to use a mic when using that particular amp. I can also use any plug-in from any other bass amp I wanna use. What are your thoughts on running my amp through the audio interface instead of using a mic in front of the speaker?

Yeah, just take a feed from the DI (if your amp has one). I have 2 passive DI's and I just bought a Sonicake B-Factory preamp/DI.

Okay. Yes, both my guitar amp and bass amp have one. This way I can at least cut down on some mics I need. I still need a vocal mic and a mic for the saxophone.

All right. I bought the bullet and got myself a starter guitar. Nothing fancy, because I wanted to see if I could/would maintain momentum with learning before I chipped in for something high end.

I'm literally at step one, and all I've learned is that finger pain is probably going to be a bigger deal than I imagined. We'll see how it goes.
