I think that the hesitancy is appropriate because every athlete/entertainer leveraging their fame to make moves is not necessarily "shrewd" marketer or a "smart businessman" and it seems to me that those labels are applied in an overly generous way.
What she was saying was "I have considered this and it actually applies-- I'm not just spouting a cliche. This kid deserves this accolade." I think it was considered props and the opposite of what you're representing it as.
