This dude was supposed to be the next one in the game.. seriously heard a couple songs when I was in college and had all my boys buy his cd.. .we were bumping this shit hard and then his cousin (Lamar Odom) signed him to his "label" Rich Soil or something... I remember this guy was on the radio free styling with 50 cent right before 50 really blew up and he had 50 scared to grab the mic.

also he had a beef with Clue and Fab and Clue would never play his songs on the radio back when he was the main DJ doing it.

Kid was nice.

I liked Ali Vegas, but like Shyne, Guerilla Black, etc. he suffered from sounding too much like a legend. Dude sounded too much like Nas and the fact he was reppin' Queens only made it worse.

Co-sign Groove Theory and especially Amiel Larrieux...to this day she is fine as hell...had one of her solo CDs a few years back, and it wasn't too bad. I really expected more from that group, as they were hitting the scene right in that post-Brand New Heavies era when Neo-Soul was coming on strong. Speaking of Brand New Heavies, whatever happened to N'Dea Davenport?

Add to the list: City High, Kipper Jones and Mica Paris (remember her?)

Not so much City High for me, but the chick, Claudette Ortiz, was about to be HUUUUGE!!!! Wyclef was about to go in hard w/ her, but she got pregnant by the cat in the group that was in Sister Act, Ryan Toby, and it was a wrap.

Heard an ill story back in the day from someone who was in the camp at the time. Said that Wyclef tried to convince them not to have the kid and told them something along the lines of Claudette without a baby was worth 50 million, but Claudette with a baby wasn't worth 50 cents. My peeps told me that they almost got rid of the kid, but couldn't go through with it and backed out at the last minute and that was the end of their relationship w/ Clef and ultimately her career. (or so I was told)

Industry is cold man. :smh::smh::smh:

Heard the same story...
Funny how times change
Back then that was contraversial stuff.
Funny if that happened now,
They would have a platinum album, tour and hit reality show.

TTD was just weird (and hella talented) but he THOUGHT he was Prince and shit:smh:

Peedi...this is a good choice this dude had hit singles, down with the ROC, State P and the Roots...

he SHOULD be a star but I think there is just something about his style (like Freeway and Dice Raw.) Just not built for mass consumption.

peedi told the story about after the roc break up he went with jay. jay opened up a million dollar budget for him and peedi said he was bullshitting spending up the budget on hotels and bitches etc. a year later jay opened another budget for a 500,000 and peedi pissed it away with no album to show for it. he said he has nothing bad to say about jay. the dude peedi just didnt put the work in.

you're kidding right?

soul II soul was on EVERY radio station when they came out. the singles were spun at every fukin club like crazy. sheit, r&b artists started biting the fuk outta the soul II soul sound. u can't name one american award show they didn't perform on when that debut disc dropped.

some of u dudes are confusing 'huge success' with LONGEVITY. hammer had fukin 'huge success' but he didn't have longevity. dudes like terence trent d'arby and groups like soul II soul blew up on their debut and had stable follow up joints but 3 or 4 records in they just fizzled.

but on a side note, that joint 'delicate' d'arby did with des'ree is still tight

Despite his songwriting success, dude never really made it as an artist, at least not as much as he really should.

the-dream.jpg

You really think Dream "failed" as an artist? Dude was all over the radio w/ those first two albums. Especially that first one.

Shit, I would actually argue that he overachieved as an artist given his lack of talent as a singer.

LoL! Yeah you have a point. Never thought about that.

and its sad because supposedly that were real cool kids and the label was behind them as a group and for her solo...

but...back then that shit was a NO NO:smh:

I really believe they should have just rolled with it.

peedi told the story about after the roc break up he went with jay. jay opened up a million dollar budget for him and peedi said he was bullshitting spending up the budget on hotels and bitches etc. a year later jay opened another budget for a 500,000 and peedi pissed it away with no album to show for it. he said he has nothing bad to say about jay. the dude peedi just didnt put the work in.

that is why I dont respect Beans so much...

although he is one of my favorite MCs EVER!!!

I dont give a shit about the Lox, or the rest crying over contracts...

get a better lawyer, read your contracts get better management...

Just make good music...

I think if Drake had went independent...

that would have COMPLETELY transformed the music industry at the time...

*two cents*

I'm sure he's what most would think of in this topic. Dude went crazy though, changed his name, did a WHOLE new genre of music and stayed in the Europe scene...

On a serious note I always thought Van Hunt should be a lot more popular than he is... never understood why he never blew

Van Hunt is a weird case. He won a Grammy then got dropped from his label. Fucked up.

OK on to page 2

Chrisette Michelle. Her first 2 albums were slept on. on The third album she sold out to try and get record sales. :(

And she has a WONDERFUL voice. It almost seems like she trying to get back to 'I AM' with that single she did with Kem...her mixtape even seemed out of place with her last album (but it was good)

I just knew this chick was gonna blow!

Teedra Moses:smh:

Love this lady's music. But I have NEVER heard her on the radio. If it wasn't for the internet she would not exist to me. :(

I'm surprise no one mentioned Dionne Farris. She had all the elements of being a success. Starting from being a standout within the group Arrested Development. She had the big crossover hit in "I Know"

Then she had the classic cut Hopeless from Love Jones soundtrack

Never heard a peep from her after that. I think peeps weren't feeling her image (short natural no makeup) but there's no doubt she could blow.

BTW, Van Hunt wrote and performed on that Hopeless track by Dionne Farris. So yeah that cat is MAD talented.

I hope this isnt true:(

cause she came out during that neo soul phase and India Arie and the rest didnt look like Beyonce...

I think the game sometimes JUST doesn't recognize true talent.

I still think it is TIMING.

Cause if she came out now and had that song played on Grey's Anatomy or on an Apple commercial, free Starbucks download and did an interview on the view or Ellen she would be a household name :D

in an industry where everybody is difficult to work with and everybody has huge ego's, that's saying a lot...he fucked himself :smh:

Farris was around before India Aire and Alicia Keys by years. As a matter of fact her first CD dropped in 95 so she was at the very beginning of the neo soul thing with D'Angelo. But it looks like she didn't drop another CD until 07.

Dionne is still grinding it out as a working artist. She was signed to Beyonce's dad's label. He was too busy f^cking young chicks to promote the album she made for him. Dionne's independent now with her third album. She hooked up with Van Hunt for some of the songwriting on it. She tours and hits a lot of smaller venues. Her voice is mad strong so she goes hard when she's on stage. If she's playing anywhere near you - go check her out.

These artist failed at gaining huge success but are not failures.

Teedra is just another of the many Not Beyonces who don't get any shine. When radio stations were in control of what they played an artist like her would get some songs on even if it was just in the late night smoothed out playlist. Now with corporate radio she gets no burn. Plus she's had label issues.

Van Hunt was never gonna be big stateside. He's not R&B and he's not that pop. He's rock with a very good singing voice. He's not gonna get play on an urban station and he's too new and too urban for the rock stations. I think he does alright overseas and most cats in the industry repsect his skills, especially his songwriting.
