China in Africa, Russia in South America/Cuba, Russia in the Middle East, these are about expansion of their sphere of influence. A country adopting a socialist/communist model back in the day was a red flag that you were aligned with Russia.

Let say Mexico or Canada started meeting with Putin or China, doing military drills, adopting the same economic model. The U.S. would get involved to diminish Russian influence in these countries.

US agrees with Russia that nuclear war could not be won - White House

WASHINGTON, May 3. /TASS/. The United States agrees with Russia that there can be no winners in a nuclear war, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told a regular briefing on Monday.
"I would say that the Russians themselves have, over time, including as recently as last year, made clear that no nuclear war - a nuclear war could not be won. We agree with that. And that is important for every country to restate and every elected official to restate around the country here as well," she said.
Psaki added that US President Joe Biden remains unwilling to send US troops to Ukraine.
"I would note the President’s view, and his position continues to be that we are not putting U.S. troops on the ground to fight this war. And that’s something we will continue to reiterate for Americans," she said.
She also denied that the situation around Ukraine has turned into an indirect conflict between NATO and Russia.
"<…> It is not a proxy war. This is a war between Russia and Ukraine. NATO is not involved. The United States is not fighting this war. So, I think it’s important and vital for all of us to not repeat the Kremlin talking points on this front," she said.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request for help by the heads of the Donbass republics. He stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, but aimed to demilitarize and denazify the country. On March 16, President Putin stated that Western sanctions policy against Moscow has all the signs of aggression. In addition, Putin pointed out that the policy of containing Russia is a long-term strategy for the West.

US does not see Russia's interest in contacts between defense ministers - Pentagon
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby recalled that a direct line of communication has been established between the military departments of the Russian Federation and the United States

WASHINGTON, May 3. /TASS/. The United States currently sees no interest from Russia in contacts between the defense ministers, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told a briefing on Monday.
"It's been quite some time, certainly, many weeks, since we've attempted another communication with Minister [of Defense of Russia Sergey] Shoigu. And there has not been much interest shown by the Russians in having that conversation," Kirby said.
"I don't have a date to give you," he added.
Kirby recalled that a direct line of communication has been established between the military departments of the Russian Federation and the United States. Earlier he said that the US and Russian military were using a similar channel of communication in Syria to avoid misjudgments of each other's actions.

Man I wonder if we ever gonna see if someone of importance is hiding in Azovstal

there been a few attempts to free them…by helicopters(only a certain amount of people can get one of those)

(Don’t know if this list is bs or not…)

Russia says helicopter downed near Mariupol was headed to evacuate Azov unit leaders
Russian Politics & DiplomacyMarch 28, 19:51
Russian aircraft and air defense forces also shot down three planes of the Ukrainian Air Force on March 28
MOSCOW, March 28. /TASS/. Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov on Monday said the Russian armed forces shot down a Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter over the Sea of Azov as it headed to Mariupol to evacuate the commanders of the Azov nationalist battalion.
Also, two Su-24 warplanes and one Su-25 were shot down, he said.
"A Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter was shot down in the area of Mariupol, five kilometers offshore over the Sea of Azov, as it headed for an urgent evacuation of Azov nationalist unit commanders that have abandoned their subordinates," Konashenkov said.
"Russian aircraft and air defense forces on March 28 shot down three planes of the Ukrainian Air Force: two Su-24s to the west of Korosten in the Zhitomir Region and one Su-25 over Druzhkovka in the Donetsk Region," he said.
In addition, a Ukrainian drone was shot down in the area of Chernobayevka.

In light of this, why hasn't ukraine more vigorously attacked RU's principle territory cities and towns?
---

Ukraine's forces inch toward Russian border

Way easier to defend than to attack. The historic ratio is 3 to 1 numerical advantage needed to actually mount a successful attack. That is the main reason you saw everyone from the FSB to Igor Girkin leaking things predicting defeat. The same reason you see the hardliners in Russia calling for more troops. The Russians got their asses beat with Soviet era weapons. It will be interesting to see what happens as more and more NATO gear works it way over there. The new gear and the acts of domestic sabotage in Russia will make the next few weeks very interesting especially given the logistical incompetence we have seen for the first 60+ days.
