China’s Plan for Peace In Ukraine Just Went Up In Flames

AA14Q3Yh.img

After the Chinese government released its 12-point plan to achieve peace in Ukraine, Moscow responded by shooting down the entire proposal and insisting that Russia’s demands must be met before the war comes to an end.

The rebuttal of China’s proposal, while respectful, indicates once again that the Kremlin is not interested in negotiations to end the war, and expects both Ukraine and NATO to accept the legitimacy of the Russian “annexations” of not just Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts, but Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, too.

The Kremlin’s response to the plan presumably wasn’t what China wanted to hear after President Xi Jinping promised his country would remain neutral in the conflict even during face-to-face meetings with the Russian president.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this week that while the plan should be studied in detail, it does not accept the conditions Russia has already deemed non-negotiable outlined within the plan.

“We paid a lot of attention to our Chinese friends’ plan,” Peskov said, according to the Moscow Times.

It is not looking very good for Ukraine in Bakhmut right now

There is so much bullshit swirling around it from both sides that I think we will only know for sure when we know for sure. haha Russia is losing incredible amounts of people/equipment but also making incremental progress. Ukraine is destroying a crazy amount of russians and their gear but also taking heavy casualties. I think Ukraine withdraws to fight another day and russia will celebrate a small victory as if they have won the war.

This could be the start of the Ukrainian exit from Bakhmut. The blue icons represent bridges that have been blown up very recently I would assume by retreating Ukrainian forces. I don't think they will risk encirclement.

This is a good summary of why Wagner is so interested in capturing Bakhmut from the WP:

Starting in mid-2022, Wagner leader Yevgeniy Prigozhin set his sights on capturing Bakhmut to show the Kremlin that, unlike Russia’s beleaguered military, which was retreating from positions, his private mercenary army remained capable of taking initiative and capturing new territory on the battlefield.
Many military analysts viewed the move as strategic folly, watching as the Russians suffered grave losses, wasting droves of primarily mercenary and ex-convict troops, as well as ammunition and weaponry, in pursuit of a city with relatively little strategic significance for the wider war.

The Ukrainians for months seemed to be succeeding in causing Russian attrition over a questionable target. Moscow has thrown tens of thousands of troops into the fight, according to a senior U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military details, and has lost thousands of those men in the battle for Bakhmut.

But in recent weeks, the Ukrainian city that once housed 70,000 people has become imbued with additional political symbolism on both sides. For the Russians, its capture would allow Moscow to tout a much-needed victory and claim momentum in a war in which its forces haven’t captured a major city since last summer. For the Ukrainians, Bakhmut has been trumpeted by officials as a “fortress” and an icon of a superhuman resistance, making even a calculated retreat politically fraught.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

  • A crowd laughed at Russia's top diplomat when he said the Ukraine war "was launched against us."
  • An audience member at India's G20 summit shouted, "Come on!" at Sergey Lavrov during the event.
  • He was answering a question about Russia's energy strategy moving forward.
Sergey Lavrov, Russia's top diplomat and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Thursday at a conference in India that the war in Ukraine "was launched against us," prompting the crowd to erupt into laughter.

Lavrov was a speaker at India's G20 Summit in New Delhi, leading a session that was part of a "Raisina Dialogue 2023" series. He was in discussion with Sunjoy Joshi, the chair of the Observer Research Foundation in India, and took questions from the audience.

One audience member asked Lavrov: "How the war has affected Russia's strategy on energy, and will it mark a privilege toward Asia? And if it does, how is India going to feature in it?"

"You know, the war, which we are trying to stop, which was launched against us, using the..." Lavrov began, before being cut off by loud laughter from the crowd.

"...The Ukrainian people, uh, of course, influenced..." Lavrov tried again, before being cut off by more laughter and a shout of, "Come on!" from the crowd.

Putin's top troops are being 'decimated' as Russia relies too much on so-called 'elite' forces to wage war in Ukraine
63340deb9ac0610018e7fed4

Several so-called "elite" Russian units have suffered heavy casualties on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Military experts told Insider that these losses are a huge blow to Moscow's combat capabilities.

It also highlights an overdependence on these units to perform difficult tasks and missions.

The Russian military has lost many of its best-trained and most-skilled soldiers in Ukraine, where casualties continue to mount after more than a year of fighting, and it is having a crippling effect on the combat power of Moscow's forces.

Multiple units long considered to be "elite" forces within the Russian military have suffered serious losses during the conflict as these forces are continually recommitted to the fight, often to carry out tasks inconsistent with their purpose.

These losses are a huge blow to Moscow's combat capabilities and highlight Russia's overdependence on these units, which have been tasked with missions that they weren't meant to carry out and are largely incapable of doing, military experts told Insider.

Russian defense minister pays rare visit to troops in Ukraine.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu paid a rare to Russia's forces deployed in Ukraine, the country's defense ministry said on Saturday.

In a statement published on Telegram, the ministry said: "The Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, inspected the forward command post of one of the formations of the Eastern Military District in the South Donetsk direction."

In video published by the ministry, Shoigu is seen awarding medals to Russian military personnel and touring a ruined town with the Eastern Military District's commander, Colonel-General Rustam Muradov.

Russia's top military chiefs have visited the front line in Ukraine only sparingly since Russia invaded the country in what it calls a "special military operation" a year ago.

Russian Su-34 Fullback Goes Down In Flames Over Donetsk

Russia lost an Su-34 Fullback strike fighter Friday. That's something both sides agree on.

How it happened, however, is like so many things, in dispute as images emerged on social media of the aircraft crashing to the ground apparently after being hit by air defense munitions.

Ukraine claims it shot down the Fullback.

"On March 3, 2023, in the Yenakiyevo region, around 1:30 p.m., anti-aircraft gunners of the Nikopol anti-aircraft missile regiment of the "East" air command destroyed a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber," the Ukrainian Air Force said on its Telegram channel.

"One of the pilots died, the second is preparing to keep him company. It's been a long time since the anti-aircraft fighters of the Air Force were pleased with such a shot down target!"

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Col. Yuri Ignat told The War Zone Friday that the jet was taken down by a Ukrainian S-300 air defense system.

The Ukraine Weapons Tracker OSINT group, however, said "preliminary information" indicated the jet was shot down by Russian friendly fire.

Russia set to mothball ruptured Nord Stream pipelines in a sign that Moscow has given up on Europe as a key buyer

Nord Stream pipelines.

  • Russia is set to seal up the damaged Nord Stream pipelines to Europe as there are no plans to repair them, Reuters reported.
  • It's a sign Moscow has given up on Europe as a key buyer of its gas in the face of strong Asian demand.
  • "Unless the war ends, there's no reason to start repairing them - literally anytime there might be a repetition of the entire thing," a Kpler analyst told Insider.
Russia is set to mothball the damaged Nord Stream pipelines to Europe as it doesn't plan to repair them, according to Reuters.

The new development is a sign Moscow has given up on Europe as its key gas market, with the country now leaning heavily on buyers from Asia.

"Unless the war ends, there's no reason to start repairing them - literally anytime there might be a repetition of the entire thing," Kpler analyst Viktor Katona told Insider, adding there's "not a healthy atmosphere around Nord Stream."

Last September, explosions ruptured the Nord Stream pipelines and set the Baltic sea boiling with leaking methane gas. It disrupted the supply of Russian gas to the continent and exacerbated a crippling energy crisis, given Moscow typically supplied about 40% of Europe's natural gas.

Immediately after the catastrophe, US and European officials blamed Russia for a committing "gross sabotage." But Russia claims it didn't destroy the gas pipelines, and recently demanded the US to prove Washington wasn't involved in the incident following a scathing report.

Russia's state-owned energy giant Gazprom has said it is technically possible to restore the blown-up pipelines but that there's no point in doing so - as Moscow sees little hope of mending relations with the West after it slapped the country with harsh sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine, two sources close to the matter told Reuters.

After Europe shunned Russia's energy exports, Moscow has turned to Asia as it scrambled to find new buyers. Since the war broke out, China has emerged as a leading buyer of Russian oil and gas, securing the commodities at steep discounts.

"Another point - Gazprom is now pouring money into the Power of Siberia-2 pipeline, effectively a replica of Nord Stream 2 with the difference that it's going into China. That project is priority number one for them, so if they can choose where they'd invest the money, they'd naturally gravitate towards the safer option," Katona said.
