A prized Russian bomber was blown up 400 miles behind enemy lines, suggesting the attack came from inside Russia: UK intel

  • Photos show a Russian Tupolev Tu-22M3 bomber destroyed at a base deep inside Russia, the BBC reported.
  • Russia said an aircraft was damaged by a copter-style drone, which tends to have limited range.
  • The UK MOD said the attack likely came from within Russia as the drone could not fly all the way from Ukraine.
A prized supersonic Russian bomber was blown up in an audacious attack over the weekend.

The attack was striking because the plane was being kept where Russia likely thought it would be safe — an air base some 400 miles behind Russia's border with Ukraine.

Russia's defence ministry said an attack by a Ukrainian copter-style drone damaged a plane at "a military airfield in the Novgorod region" on Saturday night, the BBC reported.

UK intelligence analysts concluded that the type of drone, paired with the location, meant the attack likely originated from hostile units within Russia itself.

The plane in question was a Tupolev Tu-22, the BBC said, citing photos of the plane on fire at Russia's Soltsky-2 airbase in the Novgorod region, not far from St Petersburg.

The aircraft type has been used by frequently Russia to attack Ukrainian cities, the BBC and the UK Ministry of Defense said.

It said that if Russia's claim a copter-style copter-style uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) was responsible is true, it "adds weight to the assessment that some UAV attacks against Russian military targets are being launched from inside Russian territory."

It said copter-style drones "are unlikely to have the range to reach Soltsky-2 from outside Russia."

Ukrainian news outlet New Voice of Ukraine reported that agents cooperating with Ukrainian intelligence were responsible for the attack. It claimed that they destroyed two further aircraft as well as the Tu-22.

The incident raised questions about Russia's ability to defend its aircraft even on home turf, the UK MOD said.

"This is at least the third successful attack on LRA airfields, again raising questions about Russia's ability to protect strategic locations deep inside the country."

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, a small number of attacks have taken place inside Russia. Ukraine has hinted at being responsible for some, and Russian separatists who oppose President Vladimir Putin have taken responsibility for others

Ukraine's military has not commented on the attack.

This is the manned "ship". The Ukrainians only have the 730 or 1100. This is the 730. Normal russian telegram sources have the usual blurry video of said destruction if you want to see the "proof". :smh:

TASS will TASS though with this especially because it involves a SU-30 which for some reason fell out of the sky randomly about a week ago.

They have been recycling videos more than normal and claiming random shit like this since the drone attacks on Moscow are now nightly.

One of tonight's moscow hits. Not a person on this planet would have predicted nightly drone strikes on Moscow almost two years into this shit :smh:

Speaking of Moscow, War Gonzo actually put out something interesting

A Russian pilot landed a Mi-8 helicopter on a Ukrainian airbase in a daring defection, Ukrainian official says

  • A Russian pilot has defected to Ukraine with a Mi-8 helicopter, Ukraine's intelligence service said.
  • The military-intelligence agency said it was part of a six-month-long secret plot.
  • The helicopter's other crew members, who were unaware of the plan, were "eliminated," the agency said.
A Russian helicopter pilot landed on a Ukrainian air base in what Ukrainian officials claimed was a planned defection.

The pilot landed a Russian Mi-8 AMTSh at the Poltava military air base in Kharkiv on Wednesday, taking the staff by surprise, the Kyiv Post reported.

Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine's directorate of military intelligence, told local media that the incident was the culmination of a six-month-long secret plot.

He said the pilot's family had been brought from Russia to Ukraine before his defection.

Two other crew members on the helicopter were not aware of the pilot's plan, the Kyiv Post reported.

Ukraine's military-intelligence agency said they were unwilling to surrender and "eliminated," the paper reported.

Photos published by the Ukrainian outlet Pravda appear to show the helicopter and paperwork flecked with blood.

Pro-Russian social-media channels reported that the helicopter landed at the airfield by accident after the crew became "disoriented," according to the paper.

But the Poltava air base is about 300 km, or about 186 miles, away from the front line, which makes an accidental landing unlikely, the Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov said in a Facebook post.

Butusov added that this appeared to be the first known intentional surrender of this type of Russian equipment.

Along with the helicopter, the pilot brought the parts of Su-27 and Su-30SM multirole fighter jets, supposedly being transported between two Russian air bases, the Kyiv Post reported.

The Mi-8 is commonly used as a transport helicopter, but it can also be reconfigured as an airborne command post, an armed gunship, or a reconnaissance platform.

Last year, Ukraine began offering large sums of money to defecting Russian soldiers who handed over military equipment. A helicopter is worth $500,000.

It's unclear whether this Russian pilot, who has not been named, will be compensated.

Well-known Ukrainian pilot ‘Juice’ among 3 dead in plane crash

By Olga Voitovych, CNN

(CNN)-- Three Ukrainian pilots, including a well-known pilot who went by the call sign “Juice,” have died in a plane crash, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Saturday.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 25, near the city of Zhytomyr, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) west of Kyiv. The crews of two L-39 combat trainer aircraft collided in the sky while performing a combat mission, according to the Air Force.

The Air Force expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, saying that “this is a painful and irreparable loss for all of us.”

Juice was a MiG-29 pilot and part of a unit known as “Ghost of Kyiv” that defended central and northern Ukraine at the outset of the war.

In an interview last year with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Juice said he got his nickname during a trip to the United States. He said his friends came up with the nickname, because he doesn’t drink alcohol and was always asking for juice instead.

Juice spoke to CNN again in June, explaining why he believed it was important for Western nations to provide Ukraine with American fighter jets.

“Our counteroffensive could be much more effective and much safer for our guys on the ground,” he said.

The circumstances of the crash are being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine (SBI). In a statement released on Saturday, the agency said that special attention will be paid to the technical condition of the aircraft and whether flight preparation rules were complied with.

Specialists will also conduct a thorough diagnosis of the black boxes, the SBI said.

“The loss of each soldier is a huge loss for the whole country,” the bureau said.

Ukraine shows off its next-generation 20-foot-long underwater drone that will sink Russian warships from below the surface

  • Ukraine has unveiled a new 20-foot-long underwater drone to attack Russian warships.
  • Until now, Ukraine has been attacking Russia's Black Sea Fleet mainly using surface naval drones.
  • Ukraine has also established its first naval drone brigade.
Ukraine has unveiled a 20-foot-long underwater drone to attack Russian warships from under the sea, reports say.

The vessel, called Marichka, could give Ukraine a new dimension to its attacks on Putin's Black Sea fleet, as until now, attacks have been mainly carried out by surface naval drones.

"Marichka will hit the ships on the underwater part, which can be even more destructive for the warships," specialist naval defense news website Navalnews said.

"A swarm of these suicide underwater uncrewed vehicles is very hard to defend," it said.

Ukraine previously unveiled a much smaller submarine drone called the Toloka. However, it is still being determined if it has been used to attack Russian ships, British newspaper The Telegraph reported.

The Marichka has a range of about 600 miles and can perform attack, transport, or reconnaissance missions, per Navalnews.

A newly released video appears to show the Marichka being lowered into the sea to be tested, and another video animation shows the specifications of the drone.

The payload capacity of the drone is yet to be revealed.

The Marichka has been developed by volunteer engineers, known as Ammo Ukraine, and it is estimated to cost 16 million Ukrainian hryvnia, or $433,000, Ukrainian media reported, per Navalnews.

Since last year, Ukraine has stepped up its drone attacks on Russian warships in the Black Sea in occupied Crimea.

Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said this week that naval attack drones have been able to "paralyze" the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Russia destroys many of the drones, either using electronic warfare to scramble or shoot them out of the water. However, Budanov said the attacks are still a highly effective "deterrent."

Ukraine has also established its first naval drone brigade, the 385th Separate Brigade of Special-Purpose Marine Unmanned Systems.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday presented new colors to the brigade at a Ukrainian Independence Day parade, The Telegraph reported.
