this
i never looked at coming to america as a comedy. it was a romantic movie sprinkled with comedic stuff.
i mean akeem wasnt even really funny the characters around him were.
and with this they wanted to make a comedy movie.
also the pc stuff kinda took a lot away too.

PC stuff didn't even take anything away imo
It was the missed opportunity to have a true reverse fish out of water situation.
The son should've struggled more and fell in love slower with the woman
Just a little more of that and a little less of OH SHIT REMEMBER THIS PERSON WHERE HERE THEY ARE AND WATCH THEM DO SOME SHIT!!!

Imagine if they didn't show McDowell's in Africa until he needed help and he went there then we saw Louie Anderson and Cleo at that point?

We'd been like OH SHIT IT'S DOWN THERE??/ THEY IN AFRICA????

Mofos take shit way to fckn serious... This was a Comedy... and the shit was Funny.. I came into it wanting to point out how it was nothing like the first.. And left thinking it wasnt...But Damn if it Didnt hold its own....Great Job....

I came into it not expecting anything at all
It's a cool movie it's not a classic and that's ok.
I'm frustrated because it easily could've been. The story was perfect to bring it back.
Just stop GOING for comedy. Let the comedy happen.
In the 1st the comedy just happened. They happened to go into the barbershop and those characters shined.
They were told to go to church to meet women and then we saw the pastor and randy watson.
He had to get a job that's how he found Lisa and we got the prince of soul glo

In the course of just shit happening in a journey to find love.

I mean that's just not true and by the end of it you said so.
EM delivered the goods they needed a better script
The stories were GREAT
It was like we loved the entrance to the 1st bride
so NOW EVERYONE HAS AN ENTRANCE AND GRAND ONE WE GOTTA DO IT 4 TIMES.

Wesley snipes why is he like that? Why couldn't he be a serious threat to the kingdom but have funny quirks? Instead he's strutting weird and to the side and his son is the same and etc etc etc

Just tone it down SOME and it's perfect

Case in point ----
They were out there in the field chilling and Babar comes rolling through. The elephant supposedly that was a baby in the first one
DOPE CALL BACK!!!!
They didn't have the elephant roll through and do a hip hop dance.
The elephant didn't roll through and dap up Akeem and talk to him or fart on them as they went past
The elephant was like wassup ya'll remember me from 30 years ago? I'm still alive that's how I'm doing

Now apply that to almost EVERY FACET of the movie and this is a super uber classic.

Why he gotta put extra on his song now instead of singing it the exact same way cause its tradition? That brings back the nostalgia.
Wesley Snipes was so good in this he almost saved it.

One of the things I liked about the first movie was that it had a lot of quotables. This one not so much. Didn't Leslie Jones character drug Akeem or they alluded to it? If so, that was a big risk that no one would speak out.

The thing is he was good without the extra theatrics lol
The drumline and weirdo dudes could've been left behind his acting was AMAZING
he was interesting without the bells and whistles of them other foosl.
But then he’s like every other dictator in movies at that point. He would’ve killed it regardless but I thought he added some of the funny moments in the movie. Especially his accent which seemed like he at least tried one. Eddie and Arsenio said fuck that Zamunda accent lol.

Like I'm saying the accent his mannerisms all of it was AMAZING I'm not saying take anything away from HIM and his performance take away the off brandness and intentional comedy of his soldiers and his band it's just a little bit, not a lot the little bit they thought they needed they didn't. Let him shine as he did without the other distractions.

Understood. I just personally wouldn’t change nothing with his character. Now some of that other shit could’ve been changed or thrown out.

Nothing with his character. We needed more info on him to be honest and more time for him as a worthy villain
he was gold though It would've been dope if they showed him upset because he didn't get the fanfare that akeem did 30 years ago they did an amazing job with the way back machine deep fake shit
do the same for Wesley at their wedding upset and plotting or something

I guess that's what it was with this movie. There were so many routes they could've gone in. I can also respect them not making this some 2 Hour film that would've put us to sleep but maybe they should've simplified the story and and went more in depth with the stuff that worked like Wesley's character.....its so many things I personally would've changed....they had so much material to go off of and I think they knew that but shit maybe they didn't want to spend the time on the film to do it so they rushed it out for the cash grab.

And I don't know if anyone else mentioned this....New York or Queens was a co-star in the first flick. Completely missed it in this film. I know that probably had to do with production costs but damn....

That deep fake shit was scary good.

That was my point in my first post about the movie
The plot was golden they had everything I saw it coming from the previews which isn't a bad thing.

He has a daughter that should be queen.
He finds out he has a son he goes get the son
conflict abount
some comedy relief but truly about THAT

that was enough.
Wesley POV you ruined my sister I want true revenge either marry into my family or war -- simple and expound on that.

Eddie - My family has changed I have a son we need to adjust --- simple expound on that

Eddie son - Oh shit its my dad wtf -- like they didn't even have a heart to heart or a leary situation he was just like COOL and that took away major points for them to grow in the movie but it was simple as well

then let everyone get in where the fit in.

Just as queens was the backdrop it would've been DOPE if they made zamunda a world
OK you know queens its changed come back ok look at Zamunda look at our customs look at the common people not just the palace. It'd be like going to queens and staying in the ritz carlton the entire time

But again this is just frustration because it could've been fucking classic and amazing
and with everything wrong with it it was STILL enjoyable and I'd watch it again and again

Good point. Through 2 films...we still ain't seen Zamunda....could've easily made Zamunda the co-star like Queens was in the 1st one. And yeah I saw it and hated it. Watched it with family the 2nd go around....much more enjoyable. At the very least its worth celebrating all these faces we haven't seen in awhile.

The movie was fine. People tryna compare it to a classic from 30 plus yrs ago.

We wasn't getting superstar eddie and Arsenio in 2021. If the reviewers expected that, then yes, the movie didn't live up to expectations that were too high in the 1st place.
Actually, we 'could have' gotten superstar Eddie from 30 years ago ... but the big problem was that the original movie was Rated "R"... and this sequel 30 years later is Rated "PG-13". :hmm:

Eddie has not made a movie "for an adult audience" since before 2000.

Before 2000, he made ADULT comedies that were Rated "R", like....
  • Life.
  • 48 Hours 1 & 2.
  • Beverly Hills Cop 1-4
  • Boomerang.
  • Trading Places.
  • Harlem Nights.
  • Delirious.
  • Raw, etc.
But ever since 2000, he's only made "PG-13" content, like....
  • 5 Shrek (Box Office) movies.
  • 9 Shrek (Spinoff) movies.
  • 12 Shrek Video Games.
  • 3 Shrek (Made for TV) movies.
  • 2 Dr. Dolittle movies
  • 2 Nutty Professor movies.
  • Daddy Daycare movie.
  • Mr Church movie.
  • Imagine That movie.
  • Pluto Nash movie.
So it all makes sense.

Eddie Murphy been making sooooo much PG-13 rated content for soooo long..... that he's probably FORGOTTEN how to entertain an audience of ADULTS ONLY. :dunno:

It's not that people's expectations were too high. :smh: Not at all.

Some people were just expecting Eddie to make an 'R' Rated sequel..... to an 'R' Rated original.
Not a 'PG-13' Rated sequel..... to an 'R' Rated original. :hmm:

That's like trying to make "The Nutty Professor".... the sequel to "Boomerang". :hmm:
That's not gonna work. :smh: Nobody is expecting that. :dunno:

okay, had the brunch viewing party with a few close friends and die hard fans of the first film... we chuckled here and there but honestly, I don't think I'll be popping it back in the VCR (if those joints still existed) like I used to do with the first one

I keep hear people keep talking about a PG rating instead of an R rating like the original. What are we missing this time that the R rating had? Five seconds of tits and four or six “Fucks” or “Muthafucka’s”?

That didn’t make or break the movie for me. It enhanced the first one, but wasn’t the end all be all.

I had two of the same issues with the story.

How quick the son fell in love. Shawty said she wanted to open a salon and that her favorite movie is Hair Shop, now he wanna marry the girl. If that's all it took, he would've fell in love with half the hair stylists in Atlanta, nigga.

Then the story with the daughter gave the movie a whole feminist agenda only for Akeem to be "oh, you can run the shit now" to no fanfare. They spent a whole movie trying to make this nigga king material, he needs to do this, he needs to do that. Lil mama didn't have to do none of that? She just got the job.
Just made the shit feel like a waste.

Regarding your spoiler, she had already done the work. She said so herself, actually all the daughters were being groomed to lead, but by tradition a son will always supersede a daughter. The king had to make the change to tradition like his father before him.

A PG-13 rating SKEWS the main storylines towards the Kids.

Notice: there weren't all these KIDS in the first movie. :smh:
And the storylines did not revolve around them. :smh:

At least 1/2 of this movie is about the young adults. Not the primary star who is the Comedian.
Eddie Murphy is the MAIN STAR.... but he had LESS screentime than his new found son & his son's family & his daughters combined.

The rating doesn't just affect the amount of profanity...
It affects "who the movie feels like it is actually MADE FOR". :hmm:

Hence, this movie is not made for Eddie Murphy. :smh:
The best lines... and the most "memorable moments"... and the biggest laughs came from "cameos" and supporting actors.

Not from the main star.

That's a big problem.

Overall, the movie felt very tame. Not for adults.

Look, it's damn near impossible to make a successful 30 year sequel. It was what I thought it was gonna be. Had a few funny moments but overall of course no where near the original. I just enjoyed seeing an all black cast on screen. Teyanna Taylor gotta be the sexiest ugliest muthafucka ever!!! Best way to describe her but you know the pussy is phenomenal!! Those African bathers....... :jackoff: :jackoff: :jackoff: And the barber chick.....:fucking: Only part from a plot standpoint that bothered me was General Izzi out of nowhere letting go the fact Eddie's son didn't marry his daughter. Shit didn't make sense at all he wasn't mad but guess they didn't want to go there with more anger and potential violence.

14MVpc.jpg

Did you not see the scene with the army working out with Shake Weights & Dance Dance Revolution?

General Izzi was always a fake. Talking loud but ain't saying nothing.

That's why his sister 30 years ago was made to bark like a dog & didn't stop.

Cause he was a fraud with some goons. Kinda like Suge Knight.

And once Meeka & her sisters put the beats on they ass....he fell the fuck back.

I had two of the same issues with the story.

Just made the shit feel like a waste.

Nah, she had the same drive that he had & that's what he was looking for all this time. Watch the movie again, they was vibing the entire time. I do agree they could have spent a little more time building this up though.

As for Meeka, she not only was the right choice but it was obvious throughout the movie that Lavelle was not. Only tradition stopped her.

She even HELPED Lavelle to get him to pass the princely challenge.

Ironically enough, her helping Lavelle to become prince actually helped her to break the traditions & become the future queen.

But once again....they could have spent a little more time on this to explain in more detail.

They followed the same blueprint that one did we just gotta be honest with ourselves....attempting that type of humor in a 2021 film ain’t gonna go over the same way it did in the 1980s for the first time.

we have to agree to disagree bro

People were shitting on this movie before it was ever released. I didn't think it was nearly as bad as the reviews would make it seem. It isn't the 1st Coming to America, but it is far from bad in my opinion. I was glad to see that they brought back a lot of the original cast, even some very minor characters. It's good to see how everyone has aged. The only cameo that I didn't think was necessary was En Vogue & Salt 'n Pepa, but it wasn't too distracting. I feel like they could have did a little better job of honoring the original Queen (pictures, statues) something more than the conversation in McDowell's. Otherwise, it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be in my opinion.

My last thought is I see how people are claiming that this movie somehow ruined he 1st movie, which I don't understand. The 1st movie is it's own thing. That's like saying Godfather 3 ruined the 1st 2. Godfather 3 was shit, but that doesn't change the fact that the 1st Godfather is one of the greatest movies ever.

I’m not negative and I wasn’t looking to find anything negative about the film. I wasn’t expecting it to be better than the first and wasn’t expecting the same feeling.

I wasn’t swayed by other opinions because I didn’t listen to or read any before I saw the movie.

I didn’t care for the movie but if someone else liked it I respect their opinion. I don’t want or need anyone to feel the same about the movie as me.

I only answered to get rid of the false narratives that many keep saying.

I’m happy for anyone that like the move.

Everything to say has already been said.
The movie was pure fan service.
Fortunately, I'm a fan.
I took it exactly for what it was. I just sat back and enjoyed the nostalgia.

Note: In terms of the oldest daughter - she earned the right to heir the throne. That is how it should be done. Not some feminist equality of outcome but equality of opportunity. Its good that they made it that way instead of you get the throne because "vagina".

This was a fine film I thoroughly enjoyed it, cast was good, set design was great way more polished this time around. The first will always be a classic because it was groundbreaking and there wasn't a movie like it until "Black Panther". Yeah it was more family oriented but there was some adult humor still and it had a good fight scene too. Yeah caught the "Me Too" bullshit too but it is what it is didn't derail it. Props to Ed and Arsenio for the hard work, they still hit a homerun to me, four stars (****). Icing on the cake was the return of "Sexual Chocolate" funniest part to me.

I would rather have seen the biopic of Wesley Snipes. I can't begin to imagine the stories he could tell over his career. Interesting he isn't accepted as one of the overall best actors if you look at his filmography.

Once again I liked the film but there some things I didn't like. I didnt like luvell being a mamas boy. Dude is 30 years ild and asking his moms for permission to get clea ed by them bathers like he six years old .i kind od didnt like king jafe"s funeral celebration , it felt like some b.e.t awards gala I expected Mary I blige to come out at any moment.. Somebody said in this thread that the mivie was filmed at Rick Ross mansion. I knew something felt differentl about it. I wish they filmed at the original location. That set was really a palace. It had a regal feel to it.

The story did have an a b c feel to it. Also lavelle hooking up with the hair stylist was predictable. You would thing izzi"s daughter woukdve kearned from the mistake her aunty made. The witch doctir wazs funny that was arsenic right. For thise complainkng about the pg13 rating , rhjs was more of a family film. Did you think they were going to have nudity with children in the palace? That wouldve been distatsteful. Dispite its flaws. I still enjoed it. I had a few laugh out loud moments and I had a smile on my face throughout the whole movie. It was good not as great as the first one but was good not as in a'ight but I really mean it was good. A better sequel than nutty professor 2.
