Craig Brewer is directing 'Coming 2 America' for Paramount.
Wesley Snipes has joined Eddie Murphy in Coming 2 America, Paramount’s sequel to its popular 1988 comedy.

Craig Brewer, the director best known for Hustle & Flow, is helming the project. Kevin Misher is producing via his Misher Films banner, along with Kenya Barris and Murphy.

The original film saw Murphy play Prince Akeem, a spoiled prince from the fictional African nation of Zamunda, who arrives in Queens, New York, and in undercover fashion gets a job at a McDonald’s knockoff while trying to find a wife.

The new story sees Akeem returning to America in order to find his long-lost son. Arsenio Hall is already on board to reprise his role as Akeem's best friend. Snipes will play a new character, General Izzi, a man who rules a neighboring nation. A fall start is being eyed.

Coming 2 America will represent a reteaming of Snipes with both Murphy and Brewer. The trio collaborated on Dolemite Is My Name, a biopic of comedian Rudy Ray Moore that is set to premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Snipes, perhaps best known for such films as Blade, White Men Can’t Jump and New Jack City, is also starring in and executive producing the indie action thriller Payline. He is repped by APA.

John Amos has reportedly signed on for the Coming to America sequel, a gig that will reunite him with original cast members Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Paul Bates, and James Earl Jones.

Deadline reports the 79-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as Cleo McDowell, the owner of the McDowell's fast-food joint where Prince Akeem (Murphy) was employed. His character was also the father of Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley), Akeem's love interest in the film. Amos expressed his interest in returning for the sequel in early 2019, around the time Murphy confirmed his involvement.

"I know if they do want me back, I'm looking forward to it. It was a gas the first time out, the second time could be even better," he told TMZ. "[...] I'd like to think they're going to bring Mr. McDowell back if for no other reason just to show the continuation of the characters that were established the first time out [...] I think have some ideas that might work if they're receptive."

The original 1988 film followed the character of Prince Akeem as he traveled to Queens to escape an arranged marriage and find true love. The second installment will find Akeem as he prepares to become king of the fictional Zamunda; however, his plans are derailed after he learns about his long-lost son back in the U.S.

Coming 2 America will be directed by Craig Brewer and written by Kenya Barris. In addition to the aforementioned cast members, the film will reportedly star Wesley Snipes, Teyana Taylor, Michael Blackson, Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, and Jermaine Fowler.

The film is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters in Aug. 7, 2020.

Man this could actually be fantastic if it’s written properly. It’s got limitless potential if all of the main actors/characters come back.

I'm seeing this first day. We complain of no all black movies, complain about tyler perry, tiffany hadish, kevin hart and slave movies. well this is gonna get the black panther treatment from me. I'm shocked that Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence aren't making an appearance.

Agreed. It's interesting to see how well-received movies, franchises, and series are when sequels & reboots come decades later. It would be great to see a positive crowd response like the Cobra Kai series got from fans after how they paid homage to the Karate Kid movies from way back these first 2 seasons. People are keeping an eye out for that Top Gun movie too after 30+ years since the original.

I don't know, one of the toughest task in entertainment is making a hit sequel. This cast is not thrilling me. Think I might wait on the bootleg for this one. :hmm:

He's literally bringing back most the original cast tho.. to each his own.

The original is an all time classic so I'm not expecting the sequel to be as good as the original but still have high hopes it'll be entertaining.
