Deion Sanders explains why Shedeur Sanders is 'upset' with Colorado's season

by Brad CrawfordOct 9, 1:19 PM
Opposition sacked and pressured Shedeur Sanders more than any Power Five quarterback in college football, a reality that does not sit well with Colorado's star signal caller, according to coach Deion Sanders.

During the second half of Colorado's win over Arizona State, Shedeur Sanders sat near the end of the bench after walking off the field following a sack and was visibly frustrated. He was chased throughout the contest, much like he's been all season, and has been forced to rely on his feet more often than not. It makes for 31 sacks in six starts.

“He’s mad. He’s upset with the way this looks,” Sanders said, via Buff Stampede. “He’s upset with the way it’s going. He’s upset with hit after hit after hit. You think he’s happy, being the most sacked guy in college football? He’s still doing what he’s capable of doing. He’s sick of it.”

After Arizona State knotted the game at 24 late in the fourth quarter, Shedeur Sanders marched his team on the game-winning drive, capped by a field goal late. He called that "Brady mode" after the game.

“You see it every week, this ain’t new for him. You’ve seen this every week," Deion Sanders said. "We’ve seen him do this every week. It’s like we wait for him to put on his cape and do what he does. That’s what he does every week. You guys should be accustomed to it by now.”

Outside of Colorado's pass protection woes, the Buffaloes are struggling in the run game, too. They rank last in the Pac-12 at 78.7 yards per game, forcing Sanders to be a one-man show at times through the air.

Sanders finished with 239 yards passing and a touchdown against Arizona State, his best plays coming late when the Buffaloes needed him the most. Colorado snapped an eight-game losing skid in the Pac-12 after Sanders led his team on five-play, 50-yard drive to set up Alejandro Mata's 43-yard boot.

"They simply left too much time on the clock and you know what mode we went in, we went Brady mode slash legendary mode," Sanders said, via Buff Stampede.

Deion Sanders said his team played like "hot garbage" and was lucky to escape Tempe with a victory. He said he was "sick" of the inconsistency shown during Colorado's 4-2 start.

Javon Antonio almost made Buffaloes Coach Deion Sanders cry happy tears after clutch catch

Updated on: October 11, 2023 / 12:55 PM

By Jesse Sarles

Javon Antonio expressed his love for his Colorado Buffaloes coach near the end of their 27-24 win over Arizona State last weekend. It was a special moment for Coach Deion Sanders, and he said the emotion the wide receiver shared almost made him cry.

"When one of your players looks at you and says something definitive and in that moment they really mean that? That's deep," said Sanders on this week's "Coach Prime's Playbook with Romi Bean."

The moment came on Saturday right after Antonio made a catch that got the Buffs into field goal range at Mountain America Stadium. Coach Prime put his arm around Antonio when he got back to the sidelines and said as a camera was rolling "Can't sleep on him. They can't sleep on him. What did he do? He delivered."

"Love you coach," Antonio said right away in response.

Sanders told Bean on the CBS Colorado Sports show that he and his coaching staff had seen how Antonio had been shaking off Sun Devils defenders on the routes he had been running late in the close game so "we called on him and he got it done." And he fully expects Antonio will see more touches on Friday night against Stanford.

Antonio was Sanders' special guest on this week's show, which airs at a special time this week -- 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Before Saturday's game he hadn't had much success as a Buff. But Sanders said he knew Antonio's moment would come.

"He didn't sit on the sideline, have an attitude and not be engaged in the game. He was ready. He got his opportunity, he was ready. Now he's going to play a lot more this week as well," Prime said.

One reason why Antonio may have been able to get so wide open on the play that set up the game-winning field goal on Saturday is the tips he's been getting from a Hall of Famer. Terrell Owens is one of the many sports celebrities who have been attending the Buffaloes games, and the legendary wide receiver has worked a bit with players including Antonio. T.O. even texted him with some encouragement on Saturday night.

"He's helped me with my game," Antonio said. "As a route runner he's been helping me, telling me I've got to get that better, but it's going to come. Everything's going to come together. He told me to just be patient."

Sanders says the presence of players like T.O. on the sidelines has had an incredible impact on his team.

"You know how powerful that is, to have a Hall of Fame guy that's been through trials and tribulations to come and pour back into these guys like this?" Sanders said. "That is what we're trying to do with these young men; we want to introduce them to successful men that have done it, but not only done it but they had flaws and they corrected their flaws and continued to go on."

Antonio says since he arrived in Boulder, he has been in awe of the way Sanders has coached.

"What other coach can you ask for? The best coach in the nation," Antonio said. "He's just pushing you forward every day, each and every one of us. We look up to him. Everybody does."

He has also been impressed with Coach Prime's son Shadeur Sanders, who he has developed a close relationship with.

"I've just got so much trust in my quarterback," he said.

At some point Prime is gonna have to step up as a FATHER and do something to protect his son's potential career. Cuz all that punishment not only isnt good but cumulative.....that shit adds up in wear and tear.

Wanna talk about brady mode...the most sacks brady ever endured in one season in his entire career... Tom Brady was sacked 22 times in 2021.

If that shit keeps up Shadeur's not gonna get to the NFL...as it stands Travis Hunter isn't going to 100% for a while behind that hit and God Forbid any lingering issues thats might cause him to have to alter how he plays which could effect his draft ranking...etc.

So Prime really needs to get a handle on that shit.

Pac-12 report card

Arizona
The Wildcats are clearly improved in Year 3 of the Jedd Fisch era. Starting quarterback Jayden de Laura has been sidelined over the past two games, but backup quarterback Noah Fifita has played admirably in his absence. He nearly led the Wildcats to a comeback win against Washington and pushed USC to the brink last weekend. The goal: Get bowl eligible for the first time since 2017. Grade: B+
team logo

Arizona St.
The Sun Devils took a massive hit days before their season opener when the school announced a self-imposed bowl ban for the 2023 season. Granted, the Sun Devils weren't likely to be eligible for a bowl anyway in coach Kenny Dillingham's first season, which was viewed as a developmental year. Quarterback injuries have been tough to overcome, but better days are ahead for this 1-5 team. Grade: C
team logo

California
A blowout win over North Texas and a near-victory over Auburn made it seem as though Justin Wilcox's team was ready to turn the page. Fast forward to Week 6, and Cal is 3-3 overall and down to its No. 3 quarterback after injuries to Sam Jackson V and Ben Finley. Five of the Bears' final six games are against ranked opponents, but Wilcox may be out if this team can't finish strong. Grade: C
team logo

Colorado
Considering Colorado's preseason win total was set at 3.5 (via SportsLine consensus), this has already been a massive success. Sanders was tasked with rebuilding this roster from the ground up, and integrating more than 50 new transfers is no easy task. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been a stud despite nearly constant pressure and two-way star Travis Hunter should provide a massive boost when he returns from injury. A bowl appearance for the first time since 2016 is still in play. Grade: A
team logo

Oregon
The Ducks are a Tier 1 team in the Pac-12. Excluding a near loss to Texas Tech in Week 2, Oregon has dominated its schedule, winning by an average of nearly 48 points. Quarterback Bo Nix is a potential Heisman candidate, and the pass rush has already exceeded its sack total from last season after only five games. Washington and USC loom large in the second half of the season, though. Grade: A+
team logo

Oregon State
Even with a 10-win season in 2022, Oregon State is on pace to actually improve statistically on both sides of the ball in Jonathan Smith's sixth season. The Beavers play three consecutive unranked opponents starting next weekend before closing things out with Washington and Oregon. Despite the uncertainty of the team's conference future, Smith is building something special at his alma mater. Grade: A-
team logo

UCLA
The Bruins are coming off their biggest win of the season (vs. Washington State) and appear to have found their long-term starting quarterback in freshman Dante Moore. The anchor of the UCLA defense that ranks No. 1 in total yards allowed in the Pac-12 is edge rusher Laiatu Latu, who is third in the Pac-12 in sacks. Moore is still a work in progress, but developing your quarterback of the future while posting one of the conference's top defenses is something to celebrate. Grade: B+
team logo

USC
Williams is definitely in the running to repeat as the Heisman winner. He is arguably the most valuable player in the sport on an offense can score with anyone. The Trojans defense is a different story, however, and the reason for all the close calls lately. If things don't change fast, that could cost USC a potential College Football Playoff berth. Outside of a Week 1 win over Nevada, one of the worst teams in the FBS, the Trojans have yet to string together a complete performance. That's concerning with the meat of the schedule approaching. Grade: C
team logo

Stanford
The Stanford job was always going to be a tough rebuild because of rigorous academic requirements coupled with transfer portal limitations, but the first season under coach Troy Taylor has been underwhelming all the same. The Cardinal have lost four straight, including a stunner to Sacramento State, after starting the season with a win over Hawaii. A revolving door at quarterback with Ashton Daniels and Justin Lamson indicates this team hasn't found a long-term answer at the position. Grade: D
team logo

Utah
I'm grading Utah on a curve here because of the injury to star quarterback Cameron Rising. The Utes started with a statement win over Florida and beat UCLA in a defensive slugfest, but the offense is a problem without Rising in the mix. For now, the hopes of a three-peat rests on the shoulders of backup Nate Johnson. That's not ideal after his brutal performance in the loss to Oregon State. Grade: B-
team logo

Washington
Washington has the No. 1 offense in the FBS in yards per game, which can be contributed to the jump Penix has made. It also helps that the defense ranks near the top of the conference. Outside of a near upset vs. Arizona, the Huskies have been the Pac-12's most complete team. Grade: A+
team logo

Washington St.
Wazzu's biggest storyline has been the development of quarterback Cameron Ward. Despite coming off his worst performance of the season in Week 6 -- a loss to UCLA -- he's improved his decision making, limited his turnovers and provided the state of Washington with another electric offense to watch. WSU has a favorable schedule the rest of the way and could jump right back in the mix for the Pac-12 Championship Game. Grade: A-

Colorado picks up commitment from 2024 edge rusher Amontrae Bradford

Jack Carlough
BuffalosWire_CMTD_FB.png

Colorado likely isn’t going to be losing the battle in the trenches for much longer.
With three defensive linemen already committed to the Buffs’ 2024 class, including four-star Brandon Davis-Swain, head coach Deion Sanders gained his first true edge rusher on Monday in Amontrae Bradford.
Buy Buffaloes Tickets
Bradford is a three-star recruit and the No. 42 edge rusher in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite. On3, however, tabs the Georgia prospect as a four-star prospect.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Bradford took an official visit to Boulder last month for Colorado’s home game against Colorado State.
Bradford, who was recruited by CU defensive ends coach Nick Williams, has hopes of becoming a first-round NFL draft pick.

Bradford is officially Colorado’s ninth 2024 commit.

Let’s Go bruh! CO stand up!

Here is another name to look at Aydin Breland. He recently selected his final 3 but Colorado has been making moves lately and there is a some legit interest.

Dude is a monster and a day one starter anywhere he goes. This is a name to keep an eye on

The 4-star defensive lineman, Ayden Breland, makes his college decision on October 14th between Miami, Georgia, and Oregon.

Place your bets. He ain't gonna to want to fly cross country every weekend to play a game(Oregon) or play in front of a half empty stadium(Miami). That leaves Dem Dawgs.

Deion Sanders considers what has held Alton McCaskill back from bigger role

Justin Rudolph
Colorado Buffaloes running back Alton McCaskill recently returned from injury, making his season debut against the Oregon Ducks.

In his debut and the games that followed, McCaskill has seen a limited amount of action. That fact has led some to wonder whether or not this is by design or if he is not fulfilling his duties to the program under head coach Deion Sanders. As Colorado prepares for their Week 7 matchup against Stanford, Sanders revealed why McCaskill’s role in the offense isn’t bigger.

“He’s been banged up; he’s been injured. He’s just getting back to really game speed and his expectations,” said Sanders.

Colorado has played three games since McCaskill returned to action. But the Buffaloes running back only played in two games, with most of his action against Oregon. On the season, McCaskill has just six carries for 22 yards. Still, the issue of his lack of touches isn’t just based on his return from injury. It also has to do with Colorado’s loaded backfield, as Sanders explains.

“We’re trying our best to play all those backs. That’s probably the best collective group on our team — the running back room. Those guys are really good, and Coach Flea does a great job with them. But it’s just it’s just tough; it’s just tough to get them carries because they’re so good.

“(Kavosiey) Smoke is one; well, I’ll say Smoke is a dog,” said Sanders. “It’s hard to even get him a darn carry. We got to get Dylan (Edwards) much more touches. Sy’veon (Wilkerson), you know what he brings to this table, I don’t think he got a touch last game, or maybe not. It’s a daunting task to get these guys their touches. We got to do a better job in doing that. But you’re gonna see him this week. You’re definitely gonna see him this week.”

Despite being his first year leading the program, Sanders has acquired an immense amount of talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Former Houston Cougars running back Alton McCaskill was one of many who decided to join the former Jackson State head coach in Boulder, Co. Unfortunately, his lingering injury issues have limited his availability during the early part of the season, along with the sheer talent Colorado has in the running back room.

Nevertheless, as he continues to recover, from what his head coach said above, the gasket will get more opportunities to become the featured back for the Buffaloes going forward.

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes midseason report card

Breaking down the performances of Coach Prime and team at the halfway point.

Brian Schaible58 minutes ago
Ignore all the doubters and naysayers who thought the Buffs wouldn’t win three games this season. None of those opinions mean much of anything. Sure, we kept all the receipts but really, what difference does it make? The haters had their say and they were proven wrong.

BuffsBeat has been been saying for months that we expected a 3-0 start. We also figured on them experiencing trouble versus Oregon and USC, followed by wins over Arizona State and Stanford. After that, things get a little dicey. But before looking ahead to this final tough stretch of games, let’s look back at the best and worst of the season’s first half.

REPORT CARD

Quarterback: A+

What more can can we ask for? Over 2,000 yards passing with a 158 quarterback. All this while being sacked more than any other qb in college football. Shedeur Sanders has beyond great and without his number one receiver for more than half the season. At the midway point, he’s done enough to earn a trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

Running Back: B-

There’s been some bright spots with Dylan Edwards and Anthony Hankerson but a lot is still to be determined. Sy’veon Wilkerson has looked solid in limited opportunities. We haven’t seen enough from Alton McCaskill, Charlie Offerdahl, or Kavosiey Smoke to give a true assessment.

Whether it’s blocking struggles or just a lack of execution in the run game, this team is capable of averaging a lot more than 95 yards a game.

Offensive Line: C-

We all know they have battling through injuries. There was also the surprise ruling on Tyler Brown’s eligibility. It was an uphill battle for a group thrown together in one off-season. Even a marginal improvement could pay big dividends down the stretch.

Tight End: A+

Does Michael Harrison have a scholarship yet? He’s made an impact in all four wins. Without him, this could be a completely different season.

Wide Receiver: A

It’s never a good thing when someone gets hurts. The loss of Travis Hunter basically wiped out any hopes of a championship season. The only positive takeaway is that allowed those “next men up” to actually have their opportunities to shine.

Imagine a five wide receiver formation tonight with Weaver, Hunter, Miller, Horn, and Antonio. This seems a whole lot more intimidating than it did a month ago.

Special Teams: B

This has been the most unpredictable group through the first six games. We’ve seen a number of kicks blocked but, we have also witnessed some clutch field goals sail through the the uprights. Alejandro Mata was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. Punter Mark Vassett has previously received special recognition for his achievements. Overall, I feel like it’s been somewhat of a mixed bag that has trended upward over the last few games.

Defensive Line: B

Much like the O-line, it almost seems unfair to judge this group. Cohesion is such a critical element to this position group’s success and it’s also the one thing they severely lacked going into this year. When Coach Prime talked about bringing in his “Louis” luggage, nobody was worried about his ability to replace skill position players, it was the offense and defensive lines that were concerning.

Despite that, some stars have emerged. Taijh Alston and Amari McNeill have exceeded expectations. Shane Cokes and Bishop Thomas have embraced their leadership roles on and off the field.

Linebackers: B+

Juwan Mitchell was one of the last additions to the team and is now one of the leaders in total tackles. LaVonta Bentley, Marvin Ham II, and Jordan Domineck have all helped make this group one of the more consistent units on the team.

Secondary: A

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that the next DBU would excel in the secondary. To accomplish what they have without Travis Hunter has been remarkable. We also haven’t yet seen the best of Cormani McClain, only glimpses of his potential in spot duty. It’s players like Carter Stoutmire, Omarion Cooper, Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig that have risen to elite levels. At safety, Shilo Sanders, Myles Slusher, and Trevor Woods have all had game changing moments.

Coaching: A

When you are projected to win less than three games and you win that many in September, you’re doing a great job. It’s been an amazing run at a nonstop pace. This staff overturned practically an entire roster. To go into tonight with a great chance to be on the cusp of a bowl game is an incredible accomplishment.
