Q&A: Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders talks changes in Colorado's program on 247Sports' Transfer Portal Palooza

Colorado's head football coach chatted with 247Sports' Carl Reed on Monday morning, with the transfer portal opening to non-graduates...
On Colorado's recent de-commitments from 2025 class
Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders: "It's not big to lose kids in the Class of '25. You know how long that is to stay committed to a person that you don't see but maybe once or twice a year? You got to understand, at this point, we have not lost anything that we desperately have to have. Now, if you say a Travis (Hunter) or Shedeur (Sanders) or this guy or that guy, I got a problem now. Now I am going to have to address that. I am looking at this portal stuff and I am seeing quarterbacks and key guys from certain schools and I am like, 'Woah! I know that hurt. I know they weren't ready for that.'
"There is going to be attrition and you are going to lose certain players because that's just life. Everybody is not going to be happy when you got 120-125 kids inside a locker room. Everybody is not going to be happy. They are not going to get their appetites appeased. I understand that. That's why you are constantly recruiting, you're creating competition. That's what I love. I love that you have to go out and compete every day in practice just to start on that Saturday. I love that. That's the atmosphere we desire to create at Colorado. That's the atmosphere we're going to create at Colorado. And that's how it's going to be. I didn't stutter nor did I stumble when I said it."
On Sean Lewis being hired as San Diego State's head coach
"That was the plan. Wasn't that the plan? When you leave as the head coach (from Kent State) and you come as a coordinator (to Colorado), don't you think you have plans to blow up and leave again? That was the plan. So, the plan was executed. I am happy for Sean Lewis. I am happy for whomever he took with him. I'm happy that he's elevated. Sean is a good guy. I have no quarrels with Coach Lewis. Coach Lewis did a phenomenal job in the time that he was able to do his job. I am happy for him.
"I am happy for Nick (Williams) going to (Syracuse) and prospering. I'm happy for 'Brew' (Tim Brewster going to Charlotte). I'm happy for these guys.
"One of my mentors, one of the guys that I love to do commercials with every year is Nick Saban. When I am on the set, I am asking him a multitude of questions. How he handles this and that. One of the questions was about coaches leaving and coaches prospering because he deals with that every year. And the wisdom he gave me was impeccable. The wisdom Jimmy Johnson gives me, impeccable... Mike Zimmer, Coach Andy Reid. I am able to glean from these men that are doing it at a high level, or have done it at a high level. I'm thankful for those opportunities and those conversations.
"But a lot of things that it is a surprise to y'all, we expected that. We knew it was coming. We haven't been caught off guard with anything."
On attacking the transfer portal this winter
"Oh, the portal is open, correct? You know what we need. If you watched us play, what did you say? 'Oh boy, if they just had some protection for Shedeur?' or, 'Oh, if they could just get after that passer, they would be unbelievable.' We are going to address that from the portal and the high school ranks. You got to understand high school to me is like draft choices in the NFL, the portal is free agency. We're in free agency right now and I'm thankful that we have, and we will have, the wherewithal to go get what we need."
On high school recruiting
"It's tough, now. I think we had maybe four to five high school guys that came in and contributed. The rest worked their butts off, they're being developed, they were redshirted, and they will be able to help us in the near future. But even if you do the numbers and the statistics, which our scouting department did a wonderful job, in giving me the understanding it is tough for these high school kids to come in and garner playing time. We happened to have several, and I'm thankful for them. Those kids can play. We're going out and looking for certain high school guys at certain positions that we feel like they can come right in and have impact. And it's up to them.
"I would recommend these high school guys, if you are going to make that transition, they gotta get in in the spring, man. They gotta come in so they can learn the playbook, so they can learn the culture, so they can understand the expectations, so they can get away from mom and dad and girlfriend for a minute and they get it all out of their system. And they can understand the support system that you have for them at Colorado. And they can be on the path to success. That's tremendous to get them in there early. We love to get our high school kids in there early."
On Michigan, Washington, Texas and Alabama being in the college football playoff; was Florida State done wrong?
"Well, first and foremost, can I have those problems, please? I want those problems. Thank God the committee got it right next year where there is a bigger gate and open for a plethora of schools to go to the playoffs. And we plan on being one of them.
"There's no way you are going to leave Coach Saban and Alabama out of a playoff and Georgia. No. You're not going to leave Georgia and Alabama out. It ain't no playoff if you do that. I don't know how I would have handled that. I think Coach (Mike) Norvell did a great job of speaking his truth and the players supporting him as well. That's a tough one. I would love to be in that situation. Unfortunately we're not. We plan to be in that situation. But that's a tough one. People think it's just football but you got to understand this is a business as well."
On importance of getting Shedeur Sanders better protection in 2024
"We have priorities right now. We are going to run the football and we are going to stop the run. We are going to protect Shedeur. You do know that I am not only his coach but I am his daddy, right? You do know it hurt my heart to see my son out there getting beat down every darn game. You do know that. I do a great job of disconnecting and masking and understanding that I am a coach now. But that's my son, okay? You do know that's my son so I gotta do what I gotta do to make sure he's straight. So I made some moves to try to assure him of better protection.
"Right now it is all about protecting the quarterback, running the football, and stopping the run. So we're going to be very active in the portal - offensive line, defensive line, linebackers, I'm looking for some dawg corners from FCS schools. I'm telling y'all right now I'm looking for ya. You know I ain't hard to find. I'm gonna find you. But that's what I want. We're going to put it together.
"We got our butts kicked twice. Every other game was within six, seven, eight points. So we were in a multitude of games. We were in 10 games. We got our butts kicked twice. Fulfilling those needs is going to be a wonderful thing and we know what we want. We know how we want it. We've already identified it and we're going to go get it. I promise you, we are going to go get it."
On Shedeur Sanders not complaining about the beating he took in 2023
"Shedeur is not that type of guy. Shilo (Sanders) would have said something. I am not going to tell you who we were playing but they were hitting us and gashing us on the run pretty good and he had to come up and make open field tackles and it was during a TV timeout. I said, 'Son, I need you to cut your depth down a little bit so you can get there a little quicker.' He said, 'Dad... ain't got no help in the house.' He didn't mean his teammates weren't helping. That was the thing that our pastor that passed away, that was his saying when he was preaching. He just emulated what he was saying. That was one of the funniest moments in the midst of a game. I just put my head down and walked away. Shilo is more apt do say something crazy than Shedeur."
On CB Cormani McClain's role going forward
"That's entirely up to Cormani. Cormani has to really want this. He has to need this. His why has to be something to the point where he can't live without it. He has to want success much more than he just wants to live. Cormani is a phenomenal athlete, has phenomenal talent, phenomenal ability. At this level you have to study, you have to prepare, you have to work on your craft, you have to be serious about this if you want this to be your profession.
"If a kid comes to Colorado and they tell me they want to go pro, I am going to hold you accountable to what you told me. I am not going to let the pressure off you until you tell me, 'that's not what I want anymore, Coach Prime.' But if you tell me this is what you want, and you want to be one of the best, I am going to hold your butt to a candle and I am going to hold you accountable to everything that you told me that you wanted to be.
"So I am going to make sure you study, make sure you prepare, make sure you prepare your butt off in the off-season, make sure you get stronger, make sure you eat properly, make sure you are on time and want this. If you don't, we are going to have a problem. Cormani is going to make up his mind if he wants that. If he don't, that's a problem
