Love how they cast an average looking dark skin sista as Sam's sister.

Marvel is really tackling some hard issues and not taking the easy way out.

That conversation with Isiah and Sam was powerful as shit.

So much respect for the writers of this show.
Malcolm the writer is a black guy so you should expect this kind of dialogue. The brother is on top of his game.

With the Black Captain America story, was he always from Baltimore? I'm only asking because I don't read the comics. I'm asking because would his story cross over with Henrietta Lacks and how John's Hopkins used her cells without her knowledge for medical research breakthrough and still used today?

My 13 year old was the same way...

She started watching the first episode and didn't watch any more. I ended up finishing most of the series without her... she saw pieces of the last episode and was HOOKED. Then she started asking questions about what was going on and I told her "you gave up on it too soon... at least watch the first 4 episodes... if you don't like it after that then I'll answer every question you have..."

She binge watched that entire series that day. I filled in a few blanks for her, as far as the TV shows being spoofed (I love Lucy, Malcolm in the middle, family ties, full house, etc) and it made sense to her, the beginnings of the show

you really liked that show? I tell people not to even bother with that shit, you can miss out on that entire show and never miss a beat

That Falcon and the Winter Soldier Reveal Is More Than Just a Fun Cameo
By Nola Pfau

You can call her Val, but don’t call her Val, just keep it in your head. Photo: Disney+

The reveal of Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine was a satisfying, intriguing twist in this week’s episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, not just because of the decision to cast the great Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a long-standing Hydra-related character, but also because of which version of that character the show decided to use.

The mantle of Madame Hydra has belonged to a few women over the course of Marvel Comics’ publication; the first and longest reigning is a character named Ophelia Sarkissian, also known as Viper, who held the title from her appearance in 1969’s Captain America No. 110 to 2009’s Secret Warriors No. 3. We’ve seen an incarnation of that character on film before, in the 2013 film The Wolverine. Rights issues at the time meant they couldn’t call her “Madame Hydra,” but the story as a whole is loosely adapted from the 1982 Wolverine miniseries, which was later followed up by Uncanny X-Men Nos. 172 and 173.

Despite being the second holder of the title, however, Contessa de Fontaine has actually been around longer than Viper, having first appeared in Strange Tales No. 159 in August 1967. She spent much of her history romantically entangled with Nick Fury as an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and was generally written as a heroine and love interest until Secret Warriors revealed that she’d been a Russian double agent the entire time! It was the kind of dramatic trick that comics are known for; here was a character that had been around for 42 years at that point suddenly revealed to have been a villain the entire time! In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, though, the years of deception have been sidestepped; the character is immediately introduced as a villain, stepping in to support John Walker, the new Captain America, after his very public execution of a Flag-Smasher.

Reports are that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was originally set to debut the role in the Black Widow movie, but since that was delayed, the Contessa’s first onscreen appearance is here in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While the switch-up may have spoiled what is likely meant to be a surprise reveal in the film, it’s a good bet that we’ll see some of her more classic double-agent iteration there as well.

Of course, superhero comics being what they are, a run-of-the-mill secret spy is only the tip of the iceberg. The other big fact of Contessa de Fontaine’s history is that during the 2000s, prior to her villainous reveal, the Contessa was impersonated by Skrulls as part of a long-term plan to invade Earth. In fact, the Contessa impostor was one of the early reveals during the Secret Invasion event, the first Skrull Nick Fury found out about, and the one that tipped him off to the invasion itself. Secret Invasion will itself be adapted into a Disney+ series in December of this year.

I mentioned when I wrote about Vision that part of the fun and fascination of these adaptations is the ways in which comic elements are remixed and reused, and that’s especially true here — unlike their comic-book counterparts, the Skrulls of the MCU aren’t a species of conquerors but refugees fleeing the Kree Empire, as depicted in 2019’s Captain Marvel and alluded to in one of the final scenes of WandaVision. That alone changes a large portion of the context of Secret Invasion, and it makes the upcoming adaptation a big mystery.

Debuting the character of the Contessa at this stage, so close to that show, seems significant, but is the expectation that she’ll play the same role? It’s hard to say. There’s nothing to prevent Marvel from choosing to present those earlier Skrulls as a mere subset of the overall Skrull population; while we know that the Kree were hunting them to extermination in Captain Marvel, we don’t know the broader context of the MCU’s version of the Kree-Skrull war. Are the Kree purely the aggressors, or is it a case of two species with a penchant for colonization duking it out for dominance?

Either of these scenarios is certainly possible, and if the latter’s the case, then it would make quite a lot of sense to plant some seeds ahead of time in the guise of the Contessa, and having direct access to the new Captain America would definitely be a valuable resource for an infiltrating army of aliens. It remains to be seen what sort of place John Walker is in as a character by the end of Falcon, but if he’s still around, things in the MCU could get very complicated by December.

Loved the conversation with the black super soldier, the symbolism of Sam wiping the blood off of the shield, etc. They really aren't holding back.

Sam looked at Bucky like "Hold on man!" when he was flirting with his sister.

Roid rage cap lying to battlestar's family. :smh:

I was hoping they'd show what was in the box, but since it's probably his new outfit we'll have to wait until next week to see it.

Fam. That was a dope ass scene. My daughter looked at me and had tears in her eyes. She said daddy, all Sam wants to do is honor the shield for Steve but now its stained with blood and its all Sam’s fault. I said oh God... this show might be too much for kids but damn it’s SO good, they need to take this all in.

WalMart Cap is the bad guy here but he is under understandable pressure as the new wannabe Cap and the fact that Battlestars family has such faith in him and he doesnt have it in himself was striking.

On top of that, he didn’t catch his killer, lost the shield and made a mockery and a lie out of everything that Steve actually stood for. That was a killer scene too. Great fucking writing.

Damn.

Henry Jackman's Music score and cues are so on point.

Bro. Say it louder. The right notes that cue in whoever is on screen and whenever the scene fits is what great scores are all about. Damn, this shit was powerful.

Sam was like "nah bruh" when he saw Bucky flirting with Sarah lol.

That convo with Isaiah was soooooo dope. You could literally see the pain coming from his face.

That hearing with Great Value Cap was pure white boy smugness with how he just walked out while they were still talking.

Can't wait to see Sam suit up in his new gear next week!!!

Agreed.

Brothers were acting their ass off because the real life truth was coming from between all them words. And keep in mind that all this shit was filmed WAY BEFORE the climate we dealing with now. This was supposed to be the first series out the door and I’m glad it wasn’t.

Had a whitey at work dismissing the show as BLM crap and talking about how they exaggerate shit with the Police to make us - black folks feel good. He said that shit while I was the microwave and had my earphones in but I heard the whole shit.

Then the next day, they show the Army Lieutenant on the news in the break room getting sprayed by that pussy ass cop and I looked at dude and said - what were you saying about exaggerated shit again?

He looked right at me, eye to eye and said damn man, I’m sorry. I stand fucking corrected.

I said damn right (In my Cap/ Steve Rogers voice)

I think that’s to draw in a certain community into talking about the show online.

They know what they doing. That goes both ways too. Black lady at my work watches the show just for Bucky. She says oh my god, the gait on that man. I said the what? Lol.

Had to look it up.

im not impressed

this is bore boring than queen of the south

they might be cutting production costs

Fam - you... of ALL people???

I thought the same about that convo. Also when Bucky said he didn't realize how giving the shield to a Black man would be received. Carl Lumbly is doing a fucking spectacular job as Isiah. When he's in any scene he is riveting. Like a blinding light and the other actors are shadows.

I was disappointed that they handled Isiah's points so casually. They made the same mistake that has this country about to tear itself apart. Mainly that slavery and racism have been "dealt with" by legislation.
I would have liked them to dig a little deeper and acknowledge the situation by giving Bucky the shield but I guess their plan was always to have Sam take it.

We'll see if they continue to address racial issues because you know damn well there's going to be plenty.

Something folks need to remember about Steve Rogers vis-a-vis giving Sam the shield. He's a good man who came from an "ain't shit" background. Since he doesn't like bullies, it would stand to reason he doesn't like racists. Something else to consider, from the time Steve entered Camp Lehigh, where Project Rebirth(the Captain America project) was started, he mostly was surrounded by what he may have perceived as "exceptional" blacks. Keep in mind, a reason why that camp was probably integrated during that time period was because the Army was so desperate due to Hydra that they were basically looking for "all-stars" regardless of race, talent mattered. Doing a timeline, Steve meets Gabe Jones, one of the Howling Commandos. There were other brother there too. He's frozen and wakes up and meets Nick Fury, black man in charge of possibly the world's largest espionage/paramilitary agency. He then meets fellow military men, Sam Wilson and James Rhodes, who he deems men of high character. Later he meets the Wakandans. So in his naivete, he, and Bucky to a possible extent probably figured, "If we can see all these powerful, intelligent, blacks of great character, the rest of the world should be able to adjust to a black Captain America." If you notice, a bunch of times, during FATWS, Bucky was pretty much Sam's "hype man." He and Steve projected how they felt to others.

I'm listening to Dr. Greg Carr right now. Carl Lumbly is Paul Robeson's grandson.
This is an excellent episode and he discusses FATWS.
