Agreed.

And it’s been just over 20 years since his kidney transplant as well.

Kidney transplant

On November 25, 2003, Mourning's cousin and a retired U. S. Marine, Jason Cooper, was visiting Mourning's gravely ill grandmother in the hospital. Mourning's father was present and informed Cooper that Mourning was retiring that day from the NBA because of a life-threatening kidney disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, the same problem that Sean Elliott had in 1999. Cooper asked if there was anything he could do, and began to contemplate donating one of his kidneys to his estranged cousin, whom he had not seen in 25 years and whom he only knew through basketball. Cooper was tested for compatibility, along with many other family members and friends (including fellow NBA center and good friend Patrick Ewing); during his grandmother's funeral, Mourning received the news that Jason Cooper was a match.[67][68]

Mourning received Cooper's left kidney on December 19, 2003.[66][68]

Damn I had no idea. He’s been through a lot but he’s taking care of it. That’s the key.

Exactly.

He’s been through it and stayed on top of things health-wise. Turned 54 this year.

One of our guys at work had kidney cancer. Had one removed, and a piece taken out of the other. Close to 70 now and still doing ok. Surprisingly did not require dialysis.

Wow excellent to hear, especially at that age. I’ve noticed it’s really quiet en masse but there’s a ton of hope if you catch things early enough and stay on top of it. They keep that on the low for whatever reason but when we advocate for ourselves, the chances of recovery are far greater. Some folks just don’t know about it.

Agreed.

That’s the key is to take things seriously. Especially as we all get older.

Thanks re: guy at work. The kidney removal was actually his 1st ever surgery. I had to reassure him that he was in good hands with the medical team. Told him about medical stuff my family had been through. That calmed his nerves as he realized people get all types of stuff done and recover thereafter.

1st surgery at 70 is remarkable. Man’s dodged bullets his whole life which is commendable.

Yea man, the more we talk about it and share our experiences, the more lives we can save through education and letting folks know that it doesn’t HAVE to be a death sentence.

Science and medicine have come a long way and it’s getting better everyday.

Appreciate you posting relevant information all the time too. Never goes unnoticed.

I hear you. I was surprised too re: history. He does the annual follow ups with BC Cancer Agency too.

Agreed: sharing info and experiences. The internet is a wealth of info. Best to read, watch and listen to a shitload of stuff for various bits of info.

Thanks re: links. I try to add stuff to threads when possible. And the Food / Health / Fitness thread ... make it like a 1-stop shop of links and info. Take whatever you want and read up on it.
