You Should Buy a PlayStation 3 Even If You Don’t Play Video Games

In the late 2000s, there was an awful series of ads that Sony put out for PlayStation 3 under the banner “It Only Does Everything.” The TV spots typically argued, Hey, your girlfriend or wife would let you buy a PS3 if you simply show her that it can do stuff like play movies or music, too. Plus, there were some girly titles available on the platform, in case she actually wanted to play video games herself.

The ads were dumb on a bunch of levels, but as much as it pains me to say it: They had a point. The PS3 was the first game console that truly worked as a multimedia center. Now, with the PS3 essentially at the end of its lifespan, you can now pick them up for a song, whether off Amazon or used on eBay (if you pay more than $125, you’re paying too much). Even if you don't have a shred of interest in playing video games, you should still considering grabbing one.

What you'd get, beyond the gaming features, is a Blu-ray and DVD player with 1080p resolution, plus a set-top box that can stream Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Hulu, HBOGo, NFL Gameday, and about two dozen other lesser-known streaming apps. (If you like anime, you’re in luck.) You can also play media you have on your computer by plugging in a USB stick (something the newer PlayStation 4 doesn’t allow) or stream media directly from your computer using a service like Plex. Using the PS3 controller to navigate can be annoying for non-gamers, but you can pick up a traditional TV-style remote for the PS3 for about $18.

Sure, you can buy a decent Blu-ray DVD player for less, and some of them will come with limited streaming services. But finding a multimedia device as full-featured as the PS3 for what it would cost you is nearly impossible. And it is worth noting that more than 1,000 titles were released for the PS3, and many of them look as good today as games being released on newer consoles. So if you ever get the itch to actually pick up a controller, you always have the option.

ya I traded mine in (a slim) and regretted it and went out and copped a new super slim (wish I had kept the slim since it felt sturdier)...I use it primarily to house my music collection...I'm still amazed @ how restrictive the XB1/PS4 are in comparison to the PS3 when it comes to playing/storing music and movies

I think I may have to cop one...

I'm wondering if there will be any after holiday sales?

I was trying to cop a new one and not a used or refurbished.

I bought a PS3 earlier this year and caught up on a bunch of games I bought cheap on eBay. My original PS3 died years ago and as soon as I bought the one this year, I regretted not buying one sooner.

I and the kids play games on it, but yeah, we use it for its streaming and dvd playback functionality as much as we do for games.

Love the Ps3 remote too.

@LSN is right about the restrictions on the XBONE. Still getting used to it.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhh...w/ the PS3 you wouldn't have to...you can store music on the hard drive or @ least have the option to
You can do it, but you have to download the media player from the App Store in order for it to play USB.

Now storing files, I'm not sure if the 4 can do that which is stupid in its own right.

Bought mine from a friend's kid for $25 who was going to throw it out because it powered up but wouldn't play anything. Ordered a laser from Ebay, followed SUPER EASY instructions from Youtube to replace it. Have had it for the last 7 years. The games just haven't been there for me to want to move to a PS4.

I have multiple external hard drives connected to my PS3. It is a media player, something Sony corrected and took off the PS4, so you need both connected in your entertainment center.

The only game I've played on it recently is Red Dead Redemption, which I just bought

Yea I still have a PS3 , but that PlayStation store is slow as hell
I only upgraded to ps4 to play GTAV remastered , but I would still be happy using a PS3 only today

Free online gaming and cheap games ? And a big library of games

I don't care about the multi media part , I never used it for that
Always had a wd tv,roku or Apple TV

Also all ps3's can play ps1 disc games and the fat PS3 can play ps2 disc Games

I don't think the ps4 needed a spec bump like the ps4. Pro
But I think it would help with the PS3 , that thing has like 256mb of ram and the generation lasted 10 years

the ps3 technically had 512mb of ram. it was just 2 different 256mb chips which made developers work harder to achieve better looking games.

Xb1 can do all this shit now... including streaming music and movies from not an external hard drive, but through plex and media server.

And because of the universal access apps program.. you can download tons of Windows Pc aps on XB1... like moviesfreetube and Hdmovies, and VLC.

Not including the fact that Kodi was recently added to the Windows store... as soon as that badboy gets granted access to XB1 it's a wrap.

I'm still working on gathering more details before I post a thread on how to turn this system into a mini-Kodi but the XB1 is on its way to becoming one of the most useful consoles that I've ever seen.

You can do all that on $40 Roku or firestick except for playing bluray with better performance and a fraction of the power consumption. If you want a bluray player a better buy would be the Xbox one because you would also be able to play all the latest games plus it's backwards compatible.

Kodi the app Isn't on the Xbox yet but it is on Windows and Microsoft recently set it up that developers can apply to have their apps on all windows based products. Technically Kodi is just a media player like VLC. So if VLC can get approved then I don't see why Kodi can't eventually. But for now... you can download free movie apps on your Xbox one through the windows store. I posted a short tutorial inside the Xbox thread. So you can technically give your Xbox Kodi like abilities. I recently noticed that there is a torrent streamer on the windows store that Xbox one compatible that I'm about to play around with.

Right now there isn't list of all of the apps and you can't just sort for the Xboxone compatible apps... so I'm going through trial and error on this project.

I have my PS3 in the living room, using it as a Plex machine right now. It's definitely having a second life as a media box now.

Although I have a WDTV live and a firestick also for the kitchen and bedroom.
