Gotham Producer Teases New Joker in Final Season
Gotham-Jeremiah-becomes-The-Joker.jpg

It turns out Gotham might be getting a new Joker for season 5. Twins of Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska certainly looked to be a Joker origin story, even without officially being named as such. But a recent post by writer/producer Tze Chun appears to indicate that a new Joker will appear in the show’s final season.

Fox’s Batman prequel has included the origin stories for the many villains who haunt the streets of Gotham. Season 4 treated fans to what looked like the beginning of the Joker. But unlike many of the other Batman baddies, Jeremiah was never dubbed with his signature moniker. Allegedly this is because DC won’t allow Gotham to use the name, claiming it will dilute the character’s brand. But it's beginning to look like the statement might have been a clever ruse. Gotham may still be waiting for their last season before introducing Batman’s most infamous antagonist.

According to ComicBook, Chun took to Twitter to post an image of a season 5 script. The photo revealed the cover to the script of episode 5x04. The title of the episode is “Ace Chemicals.” The image has since been deleted.

The name Ace Chemicals will be familiar to DC fans. Of the Joker’s many origin stories, Ace Chemicals is the one most commonly used. As the story goes, the man who was to become the Joker falls into a vat of chemicals at the plant. Although he manages to survive the ordeal, he resurfaces with pale skin, his signature green hair, and is driven mad. If the Ace Chemicals title wasn’t enough for Batman fans to take the hint, Chun drove the point home by adding #Joker to the post.

Gotham has had its share of Joker inspired characters. While Jerome and Jeremiah weren’t allowed to share his name or appearance, the twins’ behavior was a clear reference. Gotham writers were sure to provide ample Joker references into their storylines. But the Joker is not officially part of Gotham’scanon. This may have been intentional, with the plan to introduce the Joker during the show’s final run. If there is still a “real” Joker yet to be revealed, that raises the question of whether a new actor will be cast or if Jerome/Jeremiah actor Cameron Monaghan will play this character as well. Chun appears to be laying it on thick that fans should expect the Joker to have his run-in at Ace Chemicals at some point during the show’s final season. Fans will have to wait until 2019 to see if they’ll officially meet Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime.

Gotham Season 5 Premiere Date Possibly Revealed

The premiere date for Gotham season 5 may have been revealed. Helmed by Bruno Heller, Gotham is a Batman prequel that explores the early career of future Commissioner Jim Gordon. The story runs parallel to the formative years of Bruce Wayne in the direct aftermath of his parents' murder but before he dons the infamous cape and cowl. The series has thus far run for four seasons, inching closer to their respective destinies. Despite generally positive reviews, the ratings have steadily declined since the show first premiered. As a result, Fox announced that the fifth season would be its last.

Although the series started off as a straight homage to such classic noir as Chinatown, it eventually delved deeper into its comic book roots. Over time more of the infamous and iconic villains of the Bat-verse (everyone from Poison Ivy to Mr. Freeze) began to emerge and rise up. There have even been two facsimiles of The Joker on the show, both played by Cameron Monaghan. Neither officially bore the name, however, leading to speculation that the real clown prince of crime has yet to be revealed - something a recent tweet seemed to confirm.

Hype is understandably high as fans wait to see how this iteration of the story plays out. Unfortunately, according to the Gotham Hub fan-page on Twitter, the wait may be slightly longer than anticipated. Pointing to a TV listings website, the page states that the final season of Gotham will not air until March 15th, 2019.

Gotham-Hub-Season-5-premiere-date-tweet.jpg

Despite the fact it will only be ten episodes, fans can expect a whole horde of new villains to emerge. Magpie and The Mutant Gang have already been confirmed, amongst others. With Shane West cast as Eduardo Dorrance, speculation is rife that the Bat-Breaker himself, Bane, will also show up. The final season will reportedly be an adaptation of the popular Zero Year comic. As such, the news of an extended wait to see whether Bruce Wayne officially suits up will surely disappoint many.

Given that the premiere date doesn't come officially from Fox, the news could be taken with a pinch of salt. After all, recent word from the cast implied that the show would be returning sometime in January. That may very well still be the case. Then again, there are various reasons as to why the final season may have been pushed back. The producers, after all, seem eager to go out with a bang. By giving themselves a few more months of filming and post-production fine-tuning, they could be ensuring that they give Gotham the best send-off possible.

Batman Comic Makes Gotham's Version of Firefly Canon
In Detective Comics #988, DC introduced Bridgit Pike, Gotham's version of Firefly, as canon within official Batman lore. Although comics-based TV shows often take inspiration directly from the pages of comics, it rarely happens the other way around, yet that's what happened with this particular Batman villain.

In DC Comics, Firefly began life in 1952 as Garfield Lynns, a down on his luck special effects artist. But the most known iteration of the character is Ted Carson, who picked up the mantle of the villain in 1959. Carson was a wealthy man who gambled away most of his wealth, so he turned to a life of crime to pay his bills. Carson is the version of the character that existed in The New 52, as well as Rebirth. On the Gotham TV series, though, Firefly is Bridgit Pike, a woman. Pike was once a good friend of Selena Kyle, but as Firefly she chose a life of villainy with the other rogues on the show.

Related: Gotham Season 2: Showrunner Talks Michelle Veintimilla as Firefly

Pike never appeared in DC Comics, at least not until the latest issue of Detective Comics, issue #988. In that issue, Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, still feeling distraught over his canceled nuptials, is investigating the murder of a man shot by two separate guns. That leads him to an apartment building where he encounters a female Firefly. Alfred informs Bruce that this version of Firefly is probably the protege of Carson, a woman by the name of Bridgit Pike. Carson does eventually turn up, suggesting that there are currently two versions of Firefly in the Batmancomics universe.

Detective-Comics-Firefly-Female.jpg
Detective-Comics-Bridgit-Pike.jpg

Pike's version of Firefly has appeared throughout Gotham over the past few seasons. It's also likely that she will turn up in Gotham's fifth and final season. That season will see the adaptation of the Batman: Zero Year story, where Gotham lies in ruins and the various factions of villains begin to rule the city. At the end of season 4, the villains ravaged Gotham City, setting up for what should present an epic finale for the series. It's also likely that the young Bruce Wayne will finally don the full Batman persona by the end of the season.

It's interesting that a Batman comic would take its cue from a television show that often presents itself as something happening in an alternate timeline. However, as is always the case with comics, many alternate timelines have their similarities, and in this case, that similarity is Bridgit Pike.

Gotham Season 5 Casting Breakdown Details DC Villain Magpie's Live-Action Debut
1
DC-Comics-Villain-Magpie.jpg

Magpie is coming to Gotham for the character’s live-action debut. The Batman prequel’s final season won’t be coming until next year, but Fox is already doling out hints about what is to come in season 5. Fans of the show should be prepared for a whole new cast of villains to terrorize the streets of Gotham.

After a dip in viewership during season 4, Fox decided to end Gotham, but not before greenlighting one last season for the show to wrap up. Season 5 will be the show’s shortest with only 10 episodes. It looks like Gotham’s writers are taking full advantage of the time they have left to introduce as many Batman villains as they can. This past month has already seen the addition of Bane’s father, played by Nikita actress Shane West. One of the show’s writers/producers later dropped a big hint that the upcoming season will include a new Joker as well. Once again, the list of Batman baddies has increased by one.

Related: Gotham Season 5 Set Designer Teases A New Batcave

The Hashtag Show reveals that Magpie will also appear in Gotham. She's described as being "dressed in black with a quirky attitude" and "is insanely in love with shiny objects." Magpie’s obsession with hoarding anything pretty that’s not hers will result in her stealing from Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin. Things will inevitably go south from there. Magpie is listed as a guest star in the breakdown, making it likely that she will only appear in one episode.

Magpie started out her life as Margaret Pye. She always had a love of shiny things, which resulted in her being given her nickname. As an adult, she became the curator for the Gotham Museum of Antiquities. It was during that time that her love became an obsession. Her desire to own the artifacts around her ended up with her mind breaking and she ultimately decided to take what she believed was rightfully hers. It was then she became Magpie, stealing anything that caught her fancy with no regard to who she killed in the process.

ADVERTISING
While Gotham has unveiled many casting breakdowns, little else is known about how the show’s finale will go down. Fox has a chance to change all that in October during New York Comic Con, where the cast and producers will make an appearance. Gotham’s panel would be a perfect opportunity to unveil the first trailer for season 5. For fans of the show, it is a sad reminder that Gotham is coming to an end, but it looks like the final season will be as crazy as the last, with a host of new villains to antagonize Jim Gordon and the future Dark Knight.

Gotham Season 5 Casts Shane West as Bane's Relative
ADVERTISING

Gotham has cast Shane West for the show’s fifth and final season in the recurring role of the villain Eduardo Dorrance, father of Bane. Season 5 will be the show’s shortest with only 10 episodes. The news came as a disappointment to fans. But at least they’ll see Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon face more terrifying threats before the show’s final curtain call.

Fox’s Batman prequel told the tale of Jim Gordon’s early days trying to clean the streets of Gotham while a young Bruce Wayne gradually transforms into the Dark Knight. While not initially a hit, the show found its footing and gained a loyal following. The show took a ratings dip early in season 4, leaving its fate in question. Gotham was given the green light for a fifth season, but only to wrap up any loose ends in a brief send off. Despite the limited run, it looks like Gotham’s showrunners have big plans for season 5 with even more comic references for viewers to enjoy. As reported earlier, one of those references was said to be Eduardo Dorrance, aka King Snake.

Related: Gotham Season 5 Set Designer Teases A New Batcave

Deadline has stated that Eduardo Dorrance will indeed appear and is going to be played by Shane West, known for his roles on Nikita and ER. West’s Dorrance once knew Gordon in the army and has returned to help him restore order after the events of season 4. But things will go south in Gotham as they always do and Gordon will come to see the sinister motive behind Dorrance’s supposed assistance.

Signs point to this character being King Snake, former member of the British army turned mercenary. But it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for him to be Bane himself since the show is more than willing to take things in an unexpected direction. With just one season left, Gotham will want to use as many familiar characters as possible. Few are better known than the man who broke Batman’s back and made all the more famous by Tom Hardy’s rendition in The Dark Knight Rises.

ADVERTISING
Fans will have to wait to see Dorrance’s plans for Gotham City. Season 5 won’t be returning to Fox until 2019, giving viewers plenty of time to contemplate how the show will end. What they can expect is more of the twisted campiness that drew them to the show in the first place, as well as the final push that turns Bruce Wayne into the Dark Knight. Gotham may be ending, but for those who have been missing out, there’s still time to catch up before the show’s conclusion next year.

If they ever DO bring Batman into the Arrowverse(CW says "there are no plans to" at this time) maybe they should cast David Mazouz as Tim Drake(they already have Jason Todd on the upcoming Titans)

Fanboys and fangirls learned today at New York Comic-Con that the fifth and final season fo Fox’s Gotham promises to have plenty of villains (Bane!), a broken back of a beloved butler, and the debut of the Caped Crusader.

In addition to Batman swooping into Gotham, a slew of baddies will be ready to fight the Dark Knight in season 5 including the return of Zsasz, Mad Hatter, Scarecrow, Hugo Strange — and Penguin will have a dog! There will also be some new villains added into the mix including Magpie and the aforementioned Bane played by Shane West — which was a huge announcement to come out of the con.

There has been plenty of speculation that West was playing Bane, a role that Tom Hardy made famous in the Dark Knight Rise. The news was confirmed today. It was also confirmed that there will be a new twist on the Bane origin story. It was also revealed today that Bane will break Alfred’s back this season, a big plot point from the comics.

Gotham Showrunners Finally Admit They Almost Turned Barbara Into Harley Quinn
ADVERTISING

Gotham showrunner John Stephens has revealed that the show did consider turning Barbara Kean into the iconic Batman villain, Harley Quinn. Fox's Batmanprequel series is currently gearing up for its fifth and final season and is set to introduce Bane, who'll be portrayed by Shane West. The 10-episode run will reportedly adapt the Zero Year comic arc and will pick up from the climax of last season which saw Jeremiah Valeska, who still may or may not be The Joker, turn Gotham City into an isolated and lawless warzone.

Since The Joker's identity in Gotham is still largely a mystery, it perhaps makes sense that Harley Quinn's is just as unclear. Gotham has been teasing Quinn's appearance since its early seasons and viewers have feverishly speculated as to which character might transform into the villain, with Barbara Kean the name most frequently mentioned. At first a bright and respected young woman, Kean evolved into a violent and unstable criminal but never did take on the Harley Quinn mantle. Season 4 finally saw the introduction of a Harley Quinn-esque sidekick for Jeremiah but it is now being suggested that Gotham's final season will see a truer interpretation of the character.

Related: Gotham's Biggest Mystery Is (Still) The Joker

However, Gotham's John Stephens has now confirmed that the show's creative team did at one time consider turning Kean into Quinn, as well as another recognizable figure from Batman lore. Speaking at NYCC 2018 (via BamSmackPow), the showrunner stated:

"I think we were briefly thinking of turning her, for some reason, I don't know why, now it seems like a terrible idea, into Magpie. So we're not going to do that, we're just gonna have Magpie. There was a brief period where we said 'Is there a way to turn her into Harley Quinn' but we didn't do that either."

In later seasons of Gotham, Barbara's story arc was one of the less well-received elements of the series, with fans and critics particularly unmoved by her material with Ra's al Ghul. Perhaps the fact that producers considered turning Barbara into several other characters is a sign that Gotham didn't always know what to do with Jim Gordon's (first) ex-girlfriend. As such, it could be argued that transforming Barbara into Harley Quinn at an early stage would've benefited both the character and the series itself.

Part of the reason Barbara was so often thought of as a potential Harley Quinn is that she likely would've excelled in the role. Like Quinn, Kean's personality combined danger, insanity and passion and she'd often use her non-threatening appearance to lull foes into a false sense of security. Without an established Joker in Gotham, it's also possible that Kean's obsession with Jim Gordon could have been a substitute for Quinn's devotion to her "puddin'."

Whether deciding against turning Barbara into Harley Quinn was the correct decision is something that largely depends on the villain's potential appearance in season 5. If Gotham introduces a faithful and well-received version of Quinn next season then holding off on her arrival was the right call, but if the reports prove false and Quinn fails to materialize, opting not to transform Barbara could be seen as a sizeable missed opportunity.

First Look at Gotham’s Bane Costume (Possibly) Revealed in Cast Photo

ADVERTISING

A brand new Gotham cast photo may have revealed Bane's costume in the upcoming season of the series. Gearing up for their fifth and final season, folks behind the Fox series are pulling all the stops to ensure that the last 10 episodes of the show will be a satisfying way to cap off the prequel offering. Among the show's biggest fan treats is the imminent arrival of one of Batman's most memorable antagonist - Bane.

It was confirmed at this year's New York Comic Con, where the trailer for their forthcoming season was also debuted, that Bane will be played by Shane West in Gotham season 5. And now, fans may actually have their first look at the character's costume thanks to a brand new social media photo featuring the several cast members of the series.

Related: Penguin Will Be Fat in Gotham Series Finale

The cast photo posted by Cory Michael Smith on his official Instagram account was taken after the table read for the ninth episode of the new season of Gotham. While fans of the show are already thrilled to see the actors seemingly in high spirits, West, who is at the back of the shot, is drawing interest for his unusual attire. Unlike his castmates who are dressed casually, it looks like the actor is sporting an armor type top. It's difficult to see the entirety of his attire, but many are convinced that this is at least a piece of Bane's upcoming costume in the show. Check out the image below:

Before it was confirmed that West will be playing Bane in Gotham's final season, rumor had it that he might be playing someone related to the character. Considering that the show is naming him Eduardo Dorrance - the real name of Bane's father, King Snake, the initial confusion is understandable. Based on the narrative, Dorrance is Jim Gordon's (Ben McKenzie) friend from the army who returns to the city after No Man's Land. But while he seems to be the perfect ally at first, it's eventually revealed that his motivations aren't necessarily pure.

Aside from Bane's upcoming debut, there are a lot of things that fans can look forward to in the final season of Gotham. Harley Quinn may also be introduced (or at least a version of the character), as well as a significantly changed Joker, not to mention the first live-action version of DC villain Magpie. And of course, arguably the most anticipated thing in the entirety of the series - the unveiling of Bruce Wayne's (David Mazouz) first formal Batsuit. While the Fox series had previously featured the character donning some sort of vigilante costume, this will be the first time that he'll be sporting the superhero's iconic cowl and cape. Admittedly, although Gotham will more likely save the full reveal of the costume in the episode itself, showrunner John Stephens compared the suit to Christian Bale's The Dark Knight Rises costume, piquing the interest of many.

Gotham Showrunner Compares Finale Batman Suit to The Dark Knight Rises
ADVERTISING

Gotham showrunner John Stephens teases David Mazouz' (Bruce Wayne) own formal Batsuit that will debut by the end of the series, comparing it to Christian Bale's in The Dark Knight Rises. Gearing up for the release of their fifth and final season, the prequel series had quite a presence at this year's New York Comic Con, where they debuted the first look at No Man's Land story arc during the show's panel, while Shane West was also confirmed to guest star as Bane.

Aside from Bane, the series' final 10 episodes will also introduce the first live-action version of DC villain Magpie, not to mention the possibility that Harley Quinn might also appear with a brand new Joker. At this point, it feels like there's just too much to look forward to in the last season of Gotham. But if there's one thing that fans are really excited about, it's to see Bruce finally don his first formal Batsuit.

Related: Gotham Showrunners Finally Admit They Almost Turned Barbara Into Harley Quinn

Speaking with Bam Smack Pow, Stephens offered details about the look of the show's own version of the Batsuit. Without giving away too much, he shares that the costume is more reminiscent of Bale's in The Dark Knight Rises more than Ben Affleck's in the DCEU:

“I think it’s more matte. It’s inspired by, if I had to compare to any one costume, I’d say it’s closer to The Dark Knight Rises. It’s a little more metallic Bat battle-y looking rather than something like the Suicide one or the Affleck one."

ADVERTISING

Stephens also talked about the pressure to deliver a great version of the Batsuit - one that will satisfy their loyal audience who have stuck with them all this time. What makes this tricky, however, is since it will only be technically used towards the series finale, they had to mind the budget devoted to making it. Luckily, Stephens is confident that they were able to come up with the perfect costume:

“How much money can we allocate towards spending on this costume because it’s got to look good. Because you don’t want to spend five years, and all of a sudden go ‘great episode but that was a really crappy looking costume’. There’s a lot of pressure, but luckily our wardrobe department is amazing so all the designs they’re doing are going to be great. And we went with short ears."

ADVERTISING
Considering that the show made it a conscious effort to differentiate themselves from their movie counterparts, it makes sense that they wouldn't want something that is similar to something that fans have just seen on the big screen. Obviously, they can't mine inspiration from earlier versions of the armor as it could risk making it look outdated. Using Bale's Batsuit as a model would give them the ability to create something different and rightfully theirs but also feels familiar and iconic. And while it'll definitely be bittersweet when the time comes to say goodbye to the show, loyal Gotham viewers are undoubtedly very excited to Mazouz don his own Batsuit.

Gotham just goes for it in a madcap final season: EW review

I’m so happy Fox was insane enough to bring back Gotham. The garish supersoap wrapped last year with an apocalyptic finale that demolished every bridge out of crazy town. Now the final season starts with poor Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) holed up in police headquarters, which has become a resource-depleted green zone in a city of luscious chaos. Gordon calls the mainland for help, on a two-way radio that looks rather Roosevelt-y. (Count on this show for flea market chic!) The government gives him a stern warning: “No one is allowed in or out of Gotham.”

Who’d want to leave? Everybody’s here, and every baddie’s got a neighborhood. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) owns the ammo factory, so he lives in Art Deco splendor in City Hall, feeding his dog overcooked steak while his starving minions serenade him. Barbara (the wonderful Erin Richards) has massive stores of food on lock inside the Sirens Club, her safe-space feminist discotheque. At Sirens, the party’s still popping three months post-civilization: Kids, life finds a way! Society’s trending religious — and not the fun kind of religion, think Seventh Seal. Scarecrow (David W. Thompson) is off crucifying people. There are whispers of a fairy-tale witch in the poisonous garden. And a burgeoning death cult is putting Jeremiah Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) on stained glass windows.

image

Giovanni Rufino / FOX
The whole “Gotham City gets amputated into a stateless Westeros-of-supervillains” idea previously served as plot foundation for 2011’s Arkham City and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. (The title of this season, “No Man’s Land,” homages a 1999 comics storyline.) Gotham brings crazypants eccentricity to a familiar Bat-plot, though, plus a final-act feeling that the safety’s off. The first three episodes overflow with bullet-y standoffs, blood feuds declared, unexpected explosions. “One hundred thousand rounds of ammunition to whoever kills Jim Gordon!” counts as a low-key piece of conversation. There’s even, good lord, a bazooka blast of topicality: Here’s a city full of refugees America won’t help, broken families fending for themselves behind a cruel impassable border.

Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) is now a stern teen with a gadget or two, and the show can feel dedicated to certain limitations of the origin story format. The first few episodes suffer, too, from the absence of Monaghan, who’s already given two great performances as two different (maybe-)Jokers. But the anarchic setting encourages some truly ravenous performances. Taylor’s always had fun as Penguin, and now he’s exploring new stratospheres of fussy egomania, living in perpetual third-hour-of-Scarface decadent paranoia.

And Richards’ Barbara will stand as Gotham‘s best contribution to Dark Knight history. Way back in season 1, she was introduced with love interest-y blandness, Jim Gordon’s frequently distressed damsel caught in a cheesy bisexual love triangle. Then she killed her parents and broke bad playing dress-up: The Bruce Wayne origin story, backward and in heels! Now she’s the vengeful empress of her own club kingdom, and I love how Richards gloriously pinpoints the character’s melodrama and the high comedy. A question I always ask myself watching Gotham: Is Barbara the real hero here? Early in season 5, some dumbo tries to cross her. Her response: “I will rip out your heart!” Reader, I applauded.

I love the show’s sincere commitment to everything campy about the Caped Crusader. And there’s something fully giallo about this final season, all these impeccably dressed cops in a broken city of masked horror. At one point, a gang of Mad Maxy hoodlums attacks Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue)… and a steel-tipped arrow punches through his armored color. “It’s a freakin’ arrow, Jim!” he says, tone of voice sounding simultaneously afraid, exasperated, and delighted. That’s Gotham country. B+
