How come blacks don't like hockey?

Good question. I grew up in an area where almost all the kids liked hockey. Probably because it was cold and iceskating was a popular form of recreation. Well OK, 99.9% of the kids were also white. But even the few black kids liked hockey due to the constant exposure. We had a playground with several basketball courts that were almost always empty.
In reality, hockey trails in popularity behind other major U.S. sports. Networks have been frustrated over the years, because vewiers could not always follow the tiny (3" diameter) puck on TV. Maybe large HDTVs will change that.
Also, the majority of black people have roots in warmer climates and are not usually exposed to winter sports. In addition, basketball doesn't require anything other than a ball (you can make a basket). So in poor black areas, this is always the game of choice.
Add to that a lack of black faces in the sport and you've killed any interest among most black people.

But there isnt enough room in the city for baseball and hockey is to expensive(skates, ice rink, equip.). Plus you have to learn how to skate without busting your ass.
Hell football and basketball are so easy access and lucrative we will never see another decent bruh from america be heavyweight champ.
Unless they start making ice rinks all over the hood hockey can chalk it.

A lot of black parents cant afford to support their kids financialy to play hockey. Its probably one of the most expensive sports to play.

I'm a NASCAR fan myself, but again its expensive to drive a race car and a lot of blacks dont have the resources to do so.

Hockey is very expensive. However if you live in Canada the chances of finding blacks who enjoy hockey is quite high.

I don't follow hockey myself but I am always aware of it. Its like breathing for some of my workmates.

...But to answer the original question, it is an expensive sport, and we're not exposed to it as much...we may play street hockey, but then we move on to other sports...
Looks like an interesting game, but it's hard to understand the rules...if I understood it, I'd probably enjoy it more...it took me a while to understand soccer and cricket, but after I did, I could appreciate it more.
And yes, I am aware that we started the sport in Canada...
its a couple of pro players like Anson Carter
but for the most part, its been a extremely racist sport.

I'm Black I Was Born And Raised In Canada And Played Hockey Basically All My Life And Still Play For My Amateur Team The Thing Is I' Am The Only Black Person On The Team But It's Cool I Represent And Hold My Own Everybody Is Cool.
Hey, I was in that Special on ESPN Black Ice! For those who scene it I was one of the ones they took to the game to watch Anson Carter ! We also got to play in scrimmage him and John Sanders of ESPN. I've been playing for 17 yrs and I am happy to say that there are a lot of black in hockey

I agree and that it is a cold weather sport and we like the warm weather better. There were some all black teams in Canada in the early 1900s but they never seem to have made it. I like Hockey, when the Flyers got Eric Lindros he looked like Magic Johnson to me, he could pass and score and was smart and was the biggest guy with the puck. He made me watch it and I have never stopped.

well looking at the ratings and the very little media attention...i think its more than just blacks who dont like it.
I don't think it's a matter of cost. If it were then how do so many of these 3rd world Soviet Bloc countries pump out so many of the world's best players?
Also, if it's a matter of cost then why are almost all black players from Canada, a country that tends to have much lower wages and a higher cost of living than the USA?

WHAT? Damn, where I'm at there's at least one ballfield and ballcourt at EVERY school yard. Even the elementary schools have them. Not to mention almost every park has one of both.
If you live in a climate where it gets cold enough to hard freeze ponds, then it's not that expensive, if you don't, then you have to spend a LARGE amount of cash on a self-cooled rink. MOST black athletes don't come from that kind of climate, so the only way they are playing hockey is if their community invested in a rink (and even communities that can afford a rink, would probably spend the money on an indoor swimming pool first). Most of the USA is in a climate too warm to support winter sports (at minimal expense), Canada and Eastern Europe are sub-arctic climates and thus are perfect for winter sports. Even the northeastern U.S. can't maintain enough snow to support an entire Poconos ski season (they generally have to make snow every season). If your climate forces you to have to SIMULATE winter for any amount of time, the cost of winter sports becomes prohibitive.
