Christopher Taylor, Calabar alumni run a good anchor leg. For a minute I thought the Belgian was about to run pass him.

I think track and field should consider having a major world annually after the 2024 Olympics. These athletes are too good to be pushed aside for two years. Keep them in the public eye throughout the year leading up to a major event. Imagine if we only crowned champions every two years in other sports. I would love to see some major events in cities like Vegas, Miami, or stadiums like Cowboy Stadium, the new one in LA. Just to name a few in the U.S.

The last year has reminded me how much I loved track growing up. I think more kids should try it. Not everyone talented enough to get on the basketball court or football field. You have several events you can try until you find one that fits. Also a great way to earn some scholarship money to help pay for college. I think too many black athletes get pushed into ball sports. Lot more opportunity in track.

I mean I love track and its the sport I follow most behind Boxing/combat sports but it's just so niche here in America, the only american friends i have that watch it are all ppl that competed at some level in the sport just like myself. I have European friends that watch it that never competed tho, its just much more popular there hence why almost all the diamond league meets are hosted in European cities. As great as these Worlds were, the crowds there at Heyward were so small compared to when Worlds is hosted in London or Berlin etc. They just won't be able to draw crowds like that in American cities. As far as NCAA level, most ppl that go to D-1 for track only get partial scholarships which was what I got back when I went while the ball and stick sports athletes were getting full scholarships.

Basketball, Baseball, Football will always overshadow Track & Field. Even soccer attracts more ppl here.
I said this many times, the best you will get here in the States is Penn's Relay.

This is true. I just think they have an opportunity to grow the sport. It will never be on the same level as some of the other major sports. But theres room to expand and make it more engaging. Not sure if people are allowed to gamble on races, but if not they should look into that. Again..I'm not saying track can over take the other sports. But a major world event once a year is sustainable. We're already in the mist of it now because of covid.

Bolt was dynamic and a once in generation athlete. Not sure what his earnings were. But they had to be top or near it. The athletes already have a track season in place. Most of them depend on the Olympics to cash in and the World Championships to a lesser extent. I think there is some star power in the sport and some coming up. I know its just wishful thinking on my part. But you never know.

I kinda feel the same way with boxing. It's too fractured and doesn't do a great job marketing the sport. Dana White came along a bit into their market share with the UFC. He had much better run sport and gave people what they wanted. Look how long it took us to see Mayweather vs Pacman. All the bickering back and forth stalled that fight for years.

In the right American city thy could get some crowds on a big stage like the World championships. Crowds come out to these local and collegiate meets in Houston and Austin. Thete are some very popular events.

It is the other way around, WC is where you make money. Olympics doesn’t have prize money. Most athletes will walk away without a medal and broke so it is unrealistic for them to depend on the Olympics for cash. Elaine was an olympic champ and didn’t even have a big sponsor that push her globally. Bolt said it himself, he loves the WC because of the big money he made. This year WC award $70k-$2k for individual events and $80k-$2k for team events. You get additional money if you set a WR or CR.

Bolt was making $30mil+ a yr during his run but the only other athlete that was in his stratosphere getting into 8 figures during his peak was Liu Xiang for making history in China when he won gold in 110mh in Athens and would've got into that Bolt level of earnings had he been able to defend his gold in Beijing in 08. Outside of Anomalies like that, you have VERY FEW athletes in the sport that will make 7 figures a year, like currently not much more than a handful are making at least $1mil a yr. Boxing is a niche sport but its a premium niche sport with much more money in it, completely diff market where you'll have around 100 athletes in the sport making at least $1mil a yr. The economy of it is way bigger. There's way less MMA athletes that are making at least $1mil a year, like probably 20-25 a year only

nah the economics of the sport just doesn't work like that, Bolt was getting $250k appearance fee per meet during his run with bonuses if he broke records etc. The most a sprinter made from a single race is $1.5 mil when Donovan Bailey beat Michael Johnson in that 150m special track they built in the skydome back in 97.

Yeah the crazy thing is outside of Bolt, Liu Xiang, and Yelena Isinbayeva its almost like there was more money in the sport in the 90s then now or at least with the American Athletes. Michael Johnson was making like $5mil a yr after 96 Olympics and there ain't no american close to that right now not even Sydney

The money could come with growth of the sport. Everyone not gonna be multimillionaires, but they don't need to be. At least not to have a major world event every year. I say trim the fat and stick to just the track events. That way you not stepping on the world championship toes. No one is tuning in to watch the javelin throws and shit.

To grow the economics of the sport would take some serious restructuring and honestly I'm not sure there's ppl willing to do the work and ppl willing to invest to do all that. This has been a topic talked about recently by Michael Johnson, Carl Lewis, and some others.

1) Get away from the Olympics being the pinnacle of the sport, if you notice, the top sports Track/Swimming/gymnastics/Beach Volleyball that draw the most during olympics are all super niche outside of Olympics and not much money in them at all. T&F would need to maybe adopt a 4 grand slams like Tennis or 4 majors like Golf type of structure to where those titles are above Olympics gold medals.

2) Restructure to teams rather than being an individual sport like how Cycling is, I mean the economics in Cycling is a lot bigger than track even and the team structure may be a part of it. When you think about it, all the other racing sports like the various motorsports are all team structured as well F1/Nascar/MotoGP/Supercross etc.

3) Having a series to show the stories/personalities of these athletes like how theres the Drive to Survive series on Netflix for F1 which was what allowed F1 to finally penetrate the U.S market although they've been 1 of the biggest global sports for a long time

4) The athletes need to do more work on social media promoting themselves

If we keep it real, had Shacarri qualified the ratings would've been higher as she's by far the biggest casual draw in the sport in this country

its been great watching track.watching the jamaican teams compete and these usa teams show out and have fun. been great watching allyson for her final runs. and we got great talent for years to come. noah and knighton on the mens side. and the women are just loaded. ....mu, steiner, sydney. they all should be ecstatic with their performances. i hope they can find better avenues to get themselves out there and monetizing their talents. i don't feel like running at the speeds they run would be great on their bodies if they did more meets. but i have no idea how they train also. so who knows.but they definitely need to be reasearching.

Well if she qualified to the finals for the 100m even without medaling that probably would've really moved the needle as well as her anchoring the 4x100 relay in place of Tete Terry, that 4x100 race is the YT video with the highest views of the races so far and would be even higher if she had anchored it

Qualified for what, the heats?
If she is not making the finals ppl will lose interest fast.

True because nothing interests people like watching a train wreck.
