In the playoffs you can't win reliably in that manner.

Melo has till June 30th to sign that extension. Teams can't deal with a player after the trade deadline and before July 1st. So if it came down to it and it was looking like pay will be cut - he will NOT take that chance.

Now, if all they do is reduce the number of years for a max contract from 6 to 5, and 5 to 4 then he'll wait because he won't really be losing money.

But, what we know is this. Chandler and Gallo were going regardless. Felton is a surprise, and Fields as well.

But this trade gives the Knicks an opportunity to make a future deal as Billups has a contract ending in 2012.

What I'm saying is, he has time. He has to the trade deadline to play his hand, and after that the advantage goes to Denver.

To summarize from the very first trade proposal the Nuggets knew they we're powerless in this deal and they were playing NBA ESPN trade proposal with GM's around the league because Carmelo is a FA.
