Would make sense when you add the analogy of the caterpillar & the butterfly she told to Ruby as William and the story she told about how she saved her brother.
Maybe the magic just makes a shell but the body has to still be viable. One thing I noticed is that everything in Lovecraft Country works off of blood.
That's why he (she) said that the butterfly lives its entire life at one time, then a caterpillar emerges. Also note he(she) spoke magic words right after that story.
