X-Men ‘97
Season One
I started binging season one at home this morning for the first time. And finished it this afternoon after binging the original series back in February/March.
The series opening sequence is similar to the original series using the same music and introduction of the X-Men. The end credits are the same as the original series.
Episode One starts off a few months after the events in the season finale Season 5, Episode 14, dealing with Professor Xavier leaving with Lilandra of the Shi’ar. The anti-mutant plot kicks off the series with The Friends of Humanity and Master Mold who debuted in the original series. We see Cyclops use his abilities differently and Gambit/Wolverine working together with their powers that wasn’t shown in the original series. Jean Grey debuts being pregnant and gives birth to Nathan. Morph is officially back with the team after dealing with his issues in the original series. A new mutant named “Roberto” debuts joining the X-Men.
Magneto debuts taking over the X-Men per Xavier’s last Will and testament. Magneto debuts a new costume (I’m not feeling it, I know it’s from the 90s comics but it doesn’t look good animated as it might have looked in the comics. It looks “Fruity”). He somewhat kicks up again his war against humanity, but going a different route, that he started in the original series. Storm loses her powers and leaves unexpectedly.
Mr. Sinister returns continuing his devious plans he started off in the original series. Mojo returns in a retro episode around the 16 Bit video game systems of the 1990s.
The series introduced some relationship drama between Magneto, Gambit and Rogue. Drama between Jean and Scott came up due to Mr. Sinister’s plans along with the debut of Madelyn Pryor (The Goblin Queen). The Hellfire Club (Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost) return as part of the Mutant Liberation storyline. Master Mold arrives at Genosha and comes blasting thru like Godzilla taking out a large number of mutants. Gambit sacrifices himself taking on Master Mold which was a shock.
We got a glimpse of the Kree/Shi’ar war along with the return of the Imperial Guard and the debut of Ronan the Accuser. We got an update on Professor Xavier after he was last seen in the final episode of the original series. Cal'syee (Deathbird), Lilandra’s sister debuted. Storm goes through her own trials/tribulation in order to get her powers back. She returns debuting in her original classic outfit from the 70’s/80’s.
General Ross debuts with a reference to the original Hulk. Captain America debuts. Pure Comedy with what Rogue did with his Shield. Manapor debuts along with some Easter Eggs shown. Rogue went unexpectedly hardcore with Bolivar Trask. Nightcrawler returns to help the X-Men and we good a good fight sequence showing him using swords and his teleportation along with Wolverine actually slicing up people.
The season ended with a 3 part episode arc introducing Bastion who is revealed to have been working behind the scenes back in the original series. Cable returns and his origin is revealed. Magneto displays the full magnitude of his power sending a EMP pulse around the globe and gets back into his original costume.
Doctor Doom, Baron Zemo, Hulk, Doctor Strange, The Black Panther (T’Chaka), Cloak & Dagger, Iron Man, Daredevil and Spiderman have quick/small cameos in the last 3 episodes.
Cyclops, Jean Grey Rogue and Wolverine get into their classic costumes. Wolverine and Magneto, I wasn’t expecting them two going at each other like that. One of the best scenes in the season.
Apocalypse returns in the mid-after credits scene.
The season ended pretty much wrapping up majority of the storylines of the original series. And set it up nicely for season 2.
Overall, this was a pretty good season. It continued the flow of the original series. The animation looked great. The characters had more fluid action when moving around and displaying their powers/abilities, the original series looked like it was a rough draft on how it looked.
I noticed in the opening sequence showing “Marvel Animation, The Thing and Spiderman are shown from their 1990s series. Rumors are circulating that a new animated Spiderman series maybe debuting and the Fantastic Four might be getting their own series if they are showing them.
Disney/Star Wars has been debuting new characters in their animated series and later bringing them into the live action series/films, it’s possible Marvel maybe doing the same thing debuting animated minor characters before debuting live action. We will wait and see…
Looking forward to season 2.
