I had this idea that would have all the doors inside the school -- classrooms, barhrooms, broom closets, etc -- stay locked but can be electronically opened by badges carried by students and faculty like in a hotel.

That would secure the students and faculty should a shooter breach the school.

Great idea.: by the way these id passes would be top secret with no chance of the shooter obtaining one, right?

Of course. Unless the shooter lives with a student or faculty member, he wouldn't be able to get one. This, of course, won't stop someone from firing on students as they leave school or on recess but it's better than nothing.

It should be a away to lock them from the outside, but allow people to get out so it won't be a fire hazard
Unless I'm missing something, this has been available for more than 30 years. When I was in Highschool the most of exterior doors were equipped with interior push bars with no exterior handle, just a keyhole. They were the emergency exit doors, the only way to gain entry through the doors were to have a key or someone open them from the inside (which was a common occurrence).

Basically.

I don't see them refitting every school door in America with electronic locks being a thing that gets done, either. If they were willing to invest that much money in anything, there are better ways to spend the cash. But we are in "any idea is better than just throwing up our hands" territory here, so I'm open to almost anything (although I'm firmly in the "limit access to guns" category).

Their timeline doesn't even leave room to blame the teacher. They first encountered the shooter outside the building. Literally he had to get passed the school resource officer to get into the building. They bungled right past the p.o.s.
I'm revising this.... Resource officers lying. He saw this dude outside with that rifle and booked it to the back of the building. He It mistakes some duty sees everyday at work for the shooter. He was running from that guy that's why the 1st statement had him encountering him.He called seeing the dude engagement because he did see him.

Hell the tech can be defeated by a door jam. A solution that requires relentlessly strict adherence to protocol, especially relying on kids to faithfully execute, is not a solution at all. Every place that is an exit is an entry point unless you are going to try to funnel and usher whole campuses of people through one point. A logistics fucking nightmare. These Republicans are clowns for fuckin real.

This is one of the main problems with inheritances. You've got people that are becoming wealthy and powerful by decree instead of merit and they are making decisions but not having to understand how shit actually operates on a granular level. Because of that they make crazy ass fucking suggestions And whether the suggestion is good or bad they get insulated from the blowback.

Won't stop a student who wants to shoot up their own school.

If it had been a classroom of officers in a training session they would have found a way to kill him with minimum loss of life.

They sent a drone robot in and blew the "Money or blood" guy up in Dallas. But he was going around terrorizing the police so I guess that justified denying him his chance to a day in court.
