Solomon King
1974
4/10
I watched this last night on the road on tubi. It randomly popped up on my tubi recommendations last month.
This film was originally believed to be lost. Someone came across a copy at USC film archive. There was a restoration project to remaster it in 2022. This version on tubi is the remastered version. The original negatives are still missing, so when you watch it, there are a few jump scenes and scratches. They did a decent job on restoring it. There is a disclaimer at the start of the film giving it’s history.
I looked into it and the main actor was a local businessman in Oakland, CA. He made the film to try and go opposite of how blaxploitation films were being produced with excess violence, sex, stereotypes and language. There was controversy back then on blaxploitation flicks from some in the Black community back then.
The film co-stars people the main actor knew in Oakland, CA. who were family, friends or business associates. Nobody in the film can act and it shows. It was also filmed on location in the Bay Area of California.
The film is unintentionally comedic. It somewhat plays out like the classic “Dolemite” with how it’s presented with bad acting and dialogue. There are some funny, classic one-liners.
It’s an odd film but interesting too watch.
