Trans Netflix Employees to Stage Walkout After Company Response to Dave Chappelle Special

Members of a trans employee-resource group within Netflix are planning a walkout for October 20 to protest the company’s handling of concerns over transphobic content in Dave Chappelle’s latest comedy special, The Closer. After the special debuted on October 5, Netflix suspended three trans employees for attending a director-level meeting (and reversed the suspension after the media reported on it). Then, on October 8, CEO Ted Sarandos issued an internal memo (which was obtained by Variety) in which he defended the entertainment company’s decision to stream The Closer: “I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries,” he wrote. “Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean-spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.”

The walkout action, posted to a Slack channel by a member of the Trans* ERG (and shared with the Los Angeles Times), responds directly to Sarandos’s memo, framing its sentiment as condescending and dismissive: “Between the numerous emails and non-answers that have been given, we have been told explicitly that we somehow cannot understand the nuance of certain content. I don’t know about you, but asking for us to show the whole story and not just the pieces that harm trans and [LGBTQ+] people is not an unreasonable ask,” it reads. “So, I encourage us all to state clearly that we, as Netflix employees are stunning not simply when we are doing the work that our roles demand of us but also when we challenge the very principles of our company.”

I repeat: Dave set a really good trap

check the youtube comments - tyt etc...

Update October 13: According to Variety, Ted Sarandos released a memo to all Netflix employees stating that Netflix has “a strong belief that content on screen doesn’t directly translate to real-world harm” in response to the scheduled walkout protest. Sarandos stated: “As a leadership team, we do not believe that The Closer is intended to incite hatred or violence against anyone (per our Sensitive Content guidelines).”

Below is Ted Sarandos’ full memo to employees:

We know that a number of you have been left angry, disappointed and hurt by our decision to put Dave Chappelle’s latest special on Netflix. Also, we have many new colleagues who want to better understand the principles that guide our team’s content choices, especially with challenging titles like this.

Our goal is to entertain the world, which means programming for a diversity of tastes. This member-centric view has driven our growth over the last 20 years, despite all the competition, and remains Netflix’s north star today. We also support artistic freedom to help attract the best creators, and push back on government and other censorship requests. Our Entertain the World and Strategy Bets memos, which we’ve debated extensively, are clear about both principles – including the trade offs, i.e. that we’ll always have titles some members and employees dislike or believe are harmful.

With The Closer, we understand that the concern is not about offensive-to-some content but titles which could increase real world harm (such as further marginalizing already marginalized groups, hate, violence etc.) Last year, we heard similar concerns about 365 Days and violence against women. While some employees disagree, we have a strong belief that content on screen doesn’t directly translate to real-world harm.

The strongest evidence to support this is that violence on screens has grown hugely over the last thirty years, especially with first party shooter games, and yet violent crime has fallen significantly in many countries. Adults can watch violence, assault and abuse – or enjoy shocking stand-up comedy – without it causing them to harm others. We are working hard to ensure marginalized communities aren’t defined by a single story. So we have Sex Education, Orange is the New Black, Control Z, Hannah Gadsby and Dave Chappelle all on Netflix. Key to this is increasing diversity on the content team itself.

In his special, Chappelle makes harsh jokes about many different groups, which is his style and a reason his fans love his comedy and commentary. Stand-up comedians often expose issues that are uncomfortable because the art by nature is a highly provocative. As a leadership team, we do not believe that The Closer is intended to incite hatred or violence against anyone (per our Sensitive Content guidelines).

We’ve had these operating principles around pleasing our members and artistic expression for many years, and the team’s decision to put The Closer on our service was consistent with them. The variety and quality of our content is what members value most. Our hope is that you can be hugely inspired by entertaining the world, while also living with titles you strongly believe have no place on Netflix. This will not be the last title that causes some of you to wonder if you can still love Netflix. I sincerely hope that you can.

Hannah Gadsby Condemns Netflix’s ‘Hate Speech Dog Whistling’ After Chappelle Backlash

Hannah Gadsby, whose comedy specials Nanette (2017) and Douglas (2020) were both released through Netflix, has put out a statement condemning the company’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos for his dismissive messaging in response to the backlash to Dave Chappelle’s latest comedy special, The Closer. On October 13, in Sarandos’s latest written rant on what he thinks stand-up comedy ought to be, he evoked Gadsby’s name as a defense of Chappelle and Netflix, writing, “Adults can watch violence, assault and abuse — or enjoy shocking stand-up comedy — without it causing them to harm others. We are working hard to ensure marginalized communities aren’t defined by a single story. So we have Sex Education, Orange Is the New Black, Control Z, Hannah Gadsby and Dave Chappelle all on Netflix.”

On October 15, Gadsby took to Instagram to respond to Sarandos’s comments. “Hey Ted Sarandos! Just a quick note to let you know that I would prefer if you didn’t drag my name into your mess. Now I have to deal with even more of the hate and anger that Dave Chappelle’s fans like to unleash on me every time Dave gets 20 million dollars to process his emotionally stunted partial world view,” Gadsby wrote. “You didn’t pay me nearly enough to deal with the real world consequences of the hate speech dog whistling you refuse to acknowledge, Ted. Fuck you and your amoral algorithm cult … I do shits with more back bone than you. That’s just a joke! I definitely didn’t cross a line because you just told the world there isn’t one.” Gadsby captioned the post with “Yes I watched the whole thing. Leave me alone. #transisbeautiful #comedyisdead #ikilledit.”

Wanda Sykes has also spoken out after Chappelle’s special, tweeting “Just sending some love to my trans sisters” on October 9, the day Sarandos sent a memo to staff doubling down on his support of Chappelle. Sykes later clarified on Twitter, “Not being ‘passive aggressive,’ just spreading love to a community who needs it.” In 2018, Sykes spoke out about Netflix giving her an offensively low offer for a stand-up comedy special.

Netflix Fires Alleged Leaker As Dave Chappelle News Cycle Continues
By Devon Ivie@devonsaysrelax

Amid the ongoing controversies surrounding Dave Chappelle’s new Netflix comedy special The Closer, the streaming giant announced today that it has fired an employee for allegedly leaking metrics information to the press. In a statement provided to Vulture, a Netflix representative confirmed that the employee, who apparently revealed the cost of the special and Chappelle’s salary to Bloomberg, was let go due to “sharing confidential, commercially sensitive information” outside of the company. (Netflix reportedly paid $24.1 million for The Closer, compared to, say, the $3.9 million spent on Bo Burnham’s Inside.) “We understand this employee may have been motivated by disappointment and hurt with Netflix,” the statement read, “but maintaining a culture of trust and transparency is core to our company.”

However, in a separate interview given to The Verge, the former employee — who remained anonymous due to fear of online harassment, but was identified by the outlet as Black, pregnant, and a leader of Netflix’s trans employee resource group — disputed the merits of the dismissal. “All these white people are going around talking to the press and speaking publicly on Twitter and the only person who gets fired is the Black person who was quiet the entire time,” the employee said. “That’s absurd, and just further shows that Black trans people are the ones being targeted in this conversation.”

Since The Closer’s premiere on October 5, Chappelle has received widespread criticism — often from his fans — for the transphobic comments he makes in the special. This criticism has also boiled over to internal unrest within Netflix, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos being forced to defend The Closer in two memos to staffers after transgender employees threatened to stage a walkout. “I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries,” he wrote on October 11. “Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean-spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.” Sarandos proceeded to double down on his stance in an October 13 corporate memo, adding that “as a leadership team, we do not believe that The Closer is intended to incite hatred or violence against anyone.” Chappelle has yet to comment on anything related to the special.

The LBGTQ+.....(and any other letters they want to add) community needs to get on the same page.....

Because trans and gay comedians/ comediennes of color have all spoken out IN SUPPORT of Dave and this special.....so maybe these people should get with those people and figure out where the disconnect is

Yo, I watched this special and it was funny as fuck. DC said some real shit up in there about the whole LBGQT community. They are trying to cancel him but he's too damn famous for it to bother him. The LBGQ community is on that bullshit. They didn't take offense to Dave's joke about *******, bitches, white people and everyone else, they took offense at him explaining why he's not against the LBGQT community but was against white people. They are one sensitive ass group that clearly can't take a joke and the jokes he told were thoughtful and funny.

That shit was good. I think at the end of the day, the best shit was when he said the thing about the human experience because that shit was real. Now, I get that some of it was on the edge. I mean he made jokes about molestation, jews, gays, lesbians (talked about two piecing this stud) and how trans women need to not try to share the space of cis women. Even went into how much more seriously our society take trans and homophobia than racism. He even took on #metoo which I thought would have gotten more flack, but therein lies his point. People can't see that shit though.

EXACTLY!!!

He said no one had a problem with all his other jokes.....

And "they asked" him if he had a problem with trans? He clearly and directly stated his targets are white people......I mean ...... what else do you need to hear/see?

Which leads to his other point......how can you guys scream about wanting equality, but the moment someone makes a joke at your expense......oh no we can't joke about that!" YES THE FUCK WE CAN! It's all fun and well when Foxworthy talks about rednecks, Seinfeld/ Larry David talk about Jews /white, all black comics talking about the black experience....Ellen used to talk about being gay....

Oh so what only a trans comic can talk about trans?!

Aye "Beyond Pussy" will never not be funny.....that was a good joke there

I'm going to watch it again tonight. There are so many layers of comedy. I still can't stop laughing at "beyond pussy" & "impossible pussy". Reminds me of when two dudes here were swearing up and down Joscelin Hernandez was a trany. One of them had the audacity to say boys can have pussy too. Even typed to words boy & cunt adjacent.

There was nothing to grasp there.
Simply saying the word "Jew" isnt enuff to accuse someone of being anti-semitic

but I think that is his entire point.

They did NOT say anything

right or wrong.

Neither did the OTHER groups he targeted..
