The Canelo vs Chavez fight is to milk Canelo a little longer before he loses to GGG and to have leverage over GGG and his promoter since we know this fight is gonna do at least 400,000 PBV. Finally, Oscar is gonna pull an Oscar vs Mayweather ploy and make sure the ring is big, he will choose the gloves (soft as fuck), etc..

GGG is gonna get the shit end of the stick in any PPV vs Canelo.

I actually agree with all of this. This is a money grab fight for Canelo and a possible "tune up" for GGG. But I also think this has the potential to be a really good fight. If Chavez bitch ass don't quit again, I see Canelo getting the decision. I don't see neither one getting the knockout.

If Chavez Jr. is actually focused, addressed his conditioning problems and really wants this fight...this will be a great match. I hope they do it in Mexico and catch one of them 100k+ crowds

Canelo Alvarez to meet Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in long-awaited Mexican showdown May 6
By: Mike Coppinger | January 13, 2017 3:00 pm
1600x900

The all-Mexican showdown fight fans have clamored for for five-plus years is finally here.

Golden Boy Promotions announced Friday that Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will meet on May 6 in a HBO Pay-Per-View event. Alvarez will move up 10-plus pounds for the bout to be contested at a catch weight of 164.5 pounds.

There’s no site secured yet, but Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena and AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, are under consideration.

“I plan to shut him up,” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) told reporters through Golden Boy president Eric Gomez on a call with reporters Friday. ” … He talks so much about me. He speaks bad about me, he’s criticized me so many times. I’m going to prove in the ring who the better man is.”

Alvarez, 26, has headlined a PPV show six times, most notably against Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto. The Mexican star is boxing’s biggest draw, and his highlight-reel knockouts have caught the public’s attention.

After beating Cotto to win the lineal middleweight title in 2015, Alvarez knocked out Amir Khan before dropping back to 154 pounds to win a title with a KO of Liam Smith in September.

A bout featuring Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is the biggest that can be made in boxing, but it’s going to have to wait, and the plan remains to stage the fight in September, Gomez said. For now, though, it’s going to be Canelo and Chavez in what shapes up as the first truly big boxing event of 2017.

“If it’s not the biggest, it’s one of the biggest in the history of Mexico,” Alvarez said. “I’m only thinking of Chavez Jr. right now, I’m not thinking down the line. I won’t make that mistake. It’s a risk moving up in weight, and so many things are coming up after this fight. In order to have a big fight you need to have risks.”

And though Chavez’s name has clearly lost some luster, he still presents risk with his size and punching power. In his lone PPV main event, a 12-round decision defeat to then-middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in 2012, Chavez was outboxed for 11 rounds before he dropped Martinez in the final round.

The lasting image of the bout is Martinez stumbling around the ring in a desperate attempt to make it out of the fight.

Since then, the son of a Mexican legend’s career has been derailed by weight issues, injuries and a suspension for marijuana use.

Chavez (50-2-1, 32 KOs) topped Bryan Vera in his first bout after the defeat, but missed weight even though he moved up a full division. Though he won, the decision was controversial. Chavez rebounded, however, with a clear victory over Vera in the rematch, and this time, he made the 168-pound limit.

Chavez, 30, moved up to light heavyweight for a battle with Andrzej Fonfara in his next bout, was dominated and stopped in the ninth round. He’s fought twice since with wins over fringe contenders Marcos Reyes and Dominik Britsch.

“I dedicate this fight to Mexico,” said Chavez, whose father is one of the greatest fighters of all time. “I’m going to win, but my country will, too, because this is the fight that boxing needs.”

Canelo admitted Chavez Sr. is his idol, and said this fight will do nothing to alter his respect.

The big prize in boxing remains Canelo-Golovkin, but this is a fine appetizer, and should deliver good action in the ring.

“I hope to face the best possible Chavez because I don’t want any excuses when I beat him,” Alvarez said, “regardless of whatever happened to him.”
So Canelo said Fuck It, I'm just gonna steal checks going forward I see... :smh:

Err, Golovkin's team turned down a $10 million dollar fight guarantee with Canelo with no catchweight at 160. "Dis"Able Sanchez at first said it wasn't true, but when GoldenBoy & HBO called his bluff, and GGG's manager, Tom Loeffler had to admit it was true when a mic was shoved in his face, he said what you thought you heard him say earlier was the opposite of what you thought you saw and heard.

How many times have we seen this pattern of behavior from Sanchez when he starts telling a "F"Able.

=====

Gloves? GGG doesn't even use the stereotypical puncher's gloves (Reyes). He uses Grants which are same "pillow" brand that Floyd Mayweather uses. Let me tell you something about gloves. Them fuckers hurt like hell no matter the brand if you get touched. The gloves protect the hands. There's no such thing as "soft gloves". At GGG's age, he probably chooses Grants to protects his hands since he relies so much on his power. All that wear and tear from all the amateur fights have consequences.

If I'm not mistaken Reyes gloves are stuffed with horsehair while Floyd uses the orthopedic Grant gloves which is filled with foam. I've head you can move the horsehair in the glove around so your hitting them with more of your taped fist.

Oh and fuck Abel Sanchez.

Bruh. Fuck Abel Sanchez no doubt. But let' be real here - Oscar is acting like a bitch as well. There has been a lot of talk back and forth - but both fought Welterweight fighters who weren't even the baddest in the division. This is a pure money grab on both ends. I am definitely not a fan of either promoter but I am about 80% sure GGG is gonna thrash Canelo and Oscar knows it too.

LOL. It's not as much horse hair (the MX style aka puncher's glove) as you think and it's in a pouch. The regular Grants have horse hair like Reyes that's made a little differently and let me tell you that getting hit by orthopedics hurt too. You can move the horse hair around a bit if it's a worn out glove that's been weakened by sweat and heavy gym use, but not as much as you think.

As Roger Mayweather said about gloves, "It ain't the tools; it's the carpenter, muhr-fucka."

Fuck Oscar too especially after those emails have dropped. I don't think GGG is this unbeatable monster his handlers make him out to be. I'd make GGG the favorite against Canelo, but not much. I think he's on borrowed time. Guys, with his style, are usually done a few years after they turn thirty. What happens when he gets clipped?

You'd be bitchin' too if Canelo is the only thing keeping GoldenBoy afloat. He generates about 94% of their revenue. If by some bit of luck, Chavez Jr. beats Canelo, GB is dead. "Black Hitler" just has to wait until Arum croaks.

I agree. Victor Ortiz can vouch for that. But those Orthopedic gloves have all the padding in the front, while standard gloves have it evenly distributed throughout the glove. Maidana hated when Floyd made him wear his glove because they were so tight. It was hard to move the padding around.

And it's always been fuck Oscar to me ever since he said he wouldn't give Lara a rematch but would consider giving one to Cotto, put Rousey on the cover of Ring Magazine and wrote that fucked up letter to Floyd when he retired.

Gervonta is going to win and he will soon be a star!

I watched a few fights. Man, I hope these young Mayweather fighters can keep balling. But these cats keep emulating an old Mayweather, when young Mayweather was probably the most exciting young fighter in the past 20 years. He was a knock out artist with tremendous speed and defense. He might have been the greatest 135 - 140 lb fighter of all time.

Meanwhile, Gervonta dancing over a fallen opponent after not moving his fucking head and getting tagged unnecessarily. He was pot shorting all day instead ofThe key to Mayweather was movement (even when he got older - no movement and he would have gotten tagged by Canelo)

But I will watch a few more fights and see what he is about

Gervonte needs to take some interview lessons or toastmasters.
He'll eventually get better, but right now he's not a good speaker.

James DeGale suffers perforated eardrum, loses teeth against Jack

DeGale is hoping for a rematch, but will move on if he doesn’t get one.

James DeGale left last night’s battle with Badou Jack still holding the IBF super middleweight title thanks to a debated draw, but also left it without some teeth and with a perforated eardrum, according to Sky Sports.

DeGale (23-1-1, 14 KO) isn’t expected to miss any significant time with the injuries, and is happy that he’s still got hold of his belt.

The 30-year-old fighter is hoping for a rematch with Jack (20-1-3, 12 KO), but Jack and promoter Floyd Mayweather are seemingly putting the kibosh on that right now, with Jack, 33, looking to move up to light heavyweight, which to be fair may be an entirely legitimate move if he’s having trouble making 168 anymore.

If DeGale doesn’t get a rematch with Jack, he says he’ll simply move forward with his career. The current No. 1 ranked contender by the IBF is Jose Uzcategui, an opponent DeGale was supposed to face last year before an injury prevented Uzcategui from taking the bout, leading to Rogelio Medina getting the shot instead.

Other top rated IBF contenders include Andre Dirrell, Callum Smith, Jesse Hart, Zac Dunn, Medina, J’Leon Love, George Groves, and Avni Yildirim.

Shakur Stevenson signs with Top Rank, hires Andre Ward as co-manager
a6db524723f6031895f97f03dd3b0d78

Shakur Stevenson, a silver medalist for the U.S. boxing team in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, pulled a surprise on Thursday and signed a promotional deal with Top Rank.

Stevenson also announced that light heavyweight champion Andre Ward, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, will serve as his co-manager along with James Prince and Josh Dubin.

“Top Rank creates superstars, so I’m going with one of the best,” Stevenson told Yahoo Sports. “Look at what they’ve done: Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto. That’s what I want to do.”

Top Rank chairman Bob Arum compared Stevenson to another Hall of Famer that he once promoted, Sugar Ray Leonard.

Arum, who said Stevenson’s debut would come in April, was the 2016 Olympian that Top Rank coveted the most.

“I think this kid will be the next big superstar, the next big American superstar, and that’s why so many people were chasing him,” Arum said. “He’s that good. Our people haven’t been as high on a guy we have signed in quite a while. He’s only 19 and he’s mind-boggling as a fighter and he has a wonderful personality and a great smile.

“And whatever his punching ability is now, remember, he’s just 19 and not a man yet. Believe me, he’ll punch really hard. We really believe he’ll be a big puncher and he’s a real fast kid and he has the star quality and the ability to be another Sugar Ray Leonard.”

Ward has served as an unofficial mentor to many young fighters since he’s been a pro, and said it made sense to get into the managerial business with Stevenson. They’ve had a long relationship, Ward said, and he’s provided advice to him for years.

Ward told Yahoo Sports Thursday that when he was coming up, many veterans, notably ex-middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, shared advice with him. He said he wanted to similarly give back and help a young guy.

“Guys reached out to me throughout my career and talked to me about the good, the bad and the ugly regarding their careers,” Ward said. “They gave me a lot of nuggets and little insights here and there that made a big difference to me. Bernard is one example of a guy I pulled heavily from.

“A lot of fighters don’t talk about what they go through, but if you care about the next generation, you want to share that and give back. Shakur is a talented kid. He understands there are no guarantees, but he has the potential to be as big of a superstar as there is. He’s a good-looking kid with a great personality and a lot of boxing skills. It’s up to him to put it all together and do it, and I’m going to be here for him to try to help him.”

Ward, who is still an active fighter, was asked about his career. He said that if he chooses to fight again, he’ll only fight Sergey Kovalev, whom he defeated in November at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas by a close decision.

Ward said Prince, Dubin and promoter Roc Nation Sports were working on something, and he hoped he’d know his plans in a few weeks.

Kell Brook, mandatory challenger Errol Spence Jr. to meet in May in England

Welterweight titleholder Kell Brook and mandatory challenger Errol Spence Jr. will prepare to meet in May in Brook's hometown of Sheffield, England, after their camps made a deal on Monday.

The IBF confirmed the deal, the location of the fight and a date of May 20 -- though that could change -- in a letter to registered promoters. The letter, obtained by ESPN, also announced that the purse bid scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon at IBF headquarters in Springfield, New Jersey, had been canceled.

Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, said in an email to ESPN that the date likely will move to May 27.

The purse bid was initially scheduled to take place last Tuesday, but the IBF gave the camps an additional week when Hearn and TGB Promotions CEO Tom Brown, who represents Spence, asked for an extension because they were close to making a deal.

They struck one Monday, even though many thought Brook, who has been troubled making the 147-pound division limit, might opt to either move up to junior middleweight or make a deal for a much more lucrative fight with British countryman Amir Khan. When a deal for Khan fizzled -- in part because of Khan's demand for 70 percent of the money -- and there was no obvious big-money fight for Brook at junior middleweight, he opted to fight Spence, a dangerous rising contender.

More than anything, however, Brook has professed a desire to defend the belt that he worked so hard to get rather than just giving it up or allowing it to be stripped if he did not face Spence.

"I know I have a mandatory with Errol Spence. He's a very talented fighter but not really heard of in the U.K. or even America, but we all know he can fight," Brook told ESPN last month in New York. "It's hard to get up for guys like this because he doesn't have the name yet. I want the big-money fights if I'm going to make 147 pounds. ... I'm in a situation where I still might have to defend against Spence because I don't want to lose my title without losing it in the ring."

Brook, 30, reiterated his view on Sunday on social media, writing, "All that just to give it up? Never ducked a challenge in my life. Here to give the fans what they want. Errol Spence Jr. you are next."

Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) could not get a big-name opponent to fight him last fall, so he moved up two weight classes to middleweight and challenged unified titleholder Gennady Golovkin in September at the sold-out O2 Arena in London. It was a major event and an action-packed fight, but Golovkin broke the orbital bone around Brook's right eye in a fifth-round knockout victory.

Brook, who will be making his fourth title defense, later had surgery to repair the injury and will be fighting for the first time since.

Spence (21-0, 18 KOs), of DeSoto, Texas, was a 2012 U.S. Olympian and the 2015 ESPN.com prospect of the year. Although Spence, 27, has not yet had a chance to face a top opponent, many view him as the toughest opponent of Brook's career besides Golovkin.

In his most significant fight so far, Spence pummeled former junior welterweight titlist Chris Algieri in a fifth-round knockout in April before turning in a similarly dominant sixth-round knockout of Italy's Leonard Bundu in August in a world title elimination fight that made him the mandatory challenger for Brook's title.
