Tyler Hoechlin Thanks WB, DC, & The CW for Saying Yes to Superman Spinoff

Tyler Hoechlin is thankful to all the companies for giving the go ahead on the upcoming Superman spinoff. This spinoff of Supergirl was recently revealed, and will reportedly be titled Superman & Lois.

It has been a long time since Superman starred in his own show. In 2015, CBS launched Supergirl, a program about Superman's cousin. While the Man of Steel didn't fully appear in season one, he was mentioned. Most fans didn't expect an actual appearance, but that changed in season 2 when the show switched over to The CW. The season premiere featured Hoechlin as Superman, and he was well-received by critics and fans. Superman would also lend a helping hand in the Elseworlds Arrowverse crossover. Hoechlin will be reprising the role in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Those worried that would be it for seeing Hoechlin as Superman can rest easy. Hoechlin is getting his own show, and the actor is thankful for the greenlight.

Tyler Hoechlin posted a lengthy Instagram post, thanking Warner Bros., The CW, and DC for allowing a Superman spinoff show to be given a chance. The actor also mentions the joy of working alongside Elizabeth Tulloch, who portrays Lois Lane. Check out the post below.

Many fans are likely discussing how the show's storyline will play out. Although Hoechlin is being secretive, the report stated the show will deal with Superman and Lois as working parents. This indicates raising a child will be a primary focus. In the Rebirth comic book relaunch, the Superman comics dealt with Jonathan Kent, the son of Clark and Lois. Perhaps the show could take some ideas from these comics, but nothing is confirmed yet one way or the other.

ADVERTISING

Although there are so many unrevealed specifics and no official word from The CW on a premiere date, Superman & Lois is already an extremely anticipated show. Despite Arrow ending with its current season, the Arrowverse appears to be stronger than ever and is forging ahead with new content. With how popular Superman is worldwide, there's a solid chance a show with him as the focus could bring the highest ratings for The CW. Of course, there is no premiere date yet, so fans shouldn't expect to see the show for a little while. First, Superman will be involved in Crisis on Infinite Earths, and not just Hoechlin's character. It will certainly be interesting if the event directly sets up Superman & Lois in any way.

Theory: Arrowverse's Crisis Will Make Christopher Reeve Superman Prime

Thanks to "Crisis On Infinite Earths", the Arrowverse can make Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent canon and treat the Kingdom Come version of the character as its primary Superman. So many different DC Comics shows, which were previously separate from the Arrowverse, are now becoming via "Crisis on Infinite Earths". But Christopher Reeve's Superman might possibly be the biggest addition yet -- if that's the direction the Arrowverse is taking.

The five-part event will feature five Arrowverse shows for the first time: The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and Supergirl. This fact alone makes "Crisis on Infinite Earths" the biggest Arrowverse crossover to date, but that's not all. The scope of "Crisis" is proving to be bigger than the Arrowverse itself. Shows outside of the Arrowverse are getting some representation as well, as characters from Black Lightning, Birds of Prey, and Smallville are all joining in the fun.

"Crisis on Infinite Earths" has so far assembled what looks like a DC fan's dream cast. The cast list boasts a long list of impressive names, including Robin actor Burt Ward from the 1960s Batman series, and longtime Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy as an older Bruce Wayne. The crossover also features new heroes like Osric Chau's Ryan Choi and multiple versions of the same characters. Due to the nature of the event, "Crisis" is using three Supermen, but which one is "Superman-Prime", or the best representation of the Superman from the comic books?

CW'S CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTH'S SUPERMEN ARE FROM DIFFERENT EARTHS

"Crisis On Infinite Earths" pulls in characters from multiple timelines, including Earth-1, Supergirl's Earth-38, and more. Each show that gets incorporated into the crossover will most likely exist in its own universe. This also goes for the three different Supermen appearing in "Crisis", since there can be only one Clark Kent and one Lois Lane on each Earth. Based on what's been announced so far, the crossover has three Supermen and two versions of Lois Lane.

Legends of Tomorrow's Brandon Routh will pull double duty by playing The Atom and Superman. Routh portrayed the Man of Steel in the 2006 movie Superman Returns. Routh's character is said to be the "Kingdom Come" version of Superman. Also, Tyler Hoechlin will be back as the Arrowverse's original Superman. Hoechlin recurred as the Man of Steel in season 2 of Supergirl and reprised the role in last year's crossover, "Elseworlds", alongside Elizabeth Tulloch's Lois Lane.

Finally, Tom Welling will portray Smallville's Superman. The casting of Welling was perhaps the biggest news to come out of "Crisis" yet, as Arrowverse fans have been asking for a Smallville crossover for years. Welling will be joined by Smallville co-star Erica Durance, who will once again play Lois Lane. Smallville exists in a universe that's completely separate from all other Earths in the Arrowverse, since it contains many of the same characters, but each one of them is played by a different actor.

TOM WELLING IS REPRISING HIS SMALLVILLE CHARACTER, ROUTH IS PROBABLY DOING THE SAME
ADVERTISING

Tom Welling played Clark Kent on Smallville for ten seasons, between 2001 and 2011. After eight years, Welling will play the same character again, and it's been confirmed that the crossover will explore what happened between Smallville's series finale and "Crisis". With both Welling and Hoechlin returning to play their respective versions of Superman, it may seem unusual if The CW brought in a third Superman legacy actor, and had him playing a completely new version, as opposed to his original role.

For this reason, it makes sense that Brandon Routh is playing the same character that he portrayed in Superman Returns. This could be true even though it's already been stated that Routh's character is the Kingdom Come version of Superman, who wears a different costume and exists in an alternate reality in the comics.

That being said, Routh's Superman Returns character and the Kingdom Come Superman can be the same person. In the Kingdom Come timeline, the staff of the Daily Planet (including Lois Lane) is killed by the Joker, who is in turn murdered by a vigilante before he can be convicted. When that vigilante is hailed as a hero, Superman becomes disillusioned and hangs up his cape. Several years later, Clark decides to resume his role as Superman and reform the Justice League. These events don't contradict Superman Returns, and could easily have taken place at some point after the movie.

SUPERMAN RETURNS IS CHRISTOPHER REEVE CANON
ADVERTISING

Christopher Reeve starred as Clark Kent in four Superman movies beginning in 1978 and ending in 1987. Bryan Singer's Superman Returns is a sequel to the original films, but it ignores everything that happens in Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Superman Returns takes place five years after Superman II and continues the story of Reeve's Superman, but this time the titular hero is played by Brandon Routh instead. Routh was cast in part because of his "striking" resemblance to Reeve.

Superman: The Movie, Superman II, and Superman Returns all follow the same version of the character. So if Brandon Routh is playing his Superman, then that would mean that everything that happened in Superman: The Movie and Superman II is now part of the Arrrowverse. Having Superman: The Movie, one of the most celebrated superhero movies of all time in canon with all of its other shows would be a significant accomplishment for the Arrowverse.

CRISIS MAY BE TREATING CHRISTOPHER REEVE AS "SUPERMAN PRIME"

Superman: The Movie is quite possibly the most beloved DC film ever made, and much of its reputation is owed to Reeve's portrayal of Superman. Since Reeve, numerous actors have worn the cape, and with every iteration, comparisons to Reeve are inevitable. This is because Reeve is generally viewed as the quintessential Superman. The level of respect that Reeve's Superman gets from fans and his status as the most important Superman on the big -- or small -- screen could lead to the Arrowverse giving the character the same treatment.

Also, photos of Routh in costume indicate that the character will be older than more traditional versions of Superman. With age comes wisdom, so of all three Supermen appearing in the crossover, Routh's character seems like the one who is most likely to deliver an inspirational, Superman-like speech. He may also be the one who leads the other heroes into action. All things considered, if the Arrowverse picks one of its three versions of Clark Kent to be its "Superman Prime", Brandon Routh's Kingdom Come Superman feels like the best fit.

Arrow Rewrites Season 1 On Black Canary's Earth By Killing

The Arrow season 8 premiere rewrote season 1 by killing off a key original character - Thea Queen (Willa Holland) - resulting in a major ripple effect for the timeline of Earth-2's Starling City. The CW's flagship superhero series kicked off its final season by building towards this year's mega-crossover, Crisis On Infinite Earths. At the end of Arrow season 7, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) left his family and friends behind to join the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) on a mysterious quest involving the imminent Crisis.

In Arrow's season 8 premiere, "Starling City", Oliver arrived on Earth-2 and found that his city in 2019 was like a funhouse mirror image of Arrow season 1. The Green Arrow was rescued from the island of Lian Yu after 12 years (not 5) and returned home to find people who are dead in his reality alive and well - but not everyone. His mother Moira (Susannah Thompson) is now married to Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) and his best friend Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell) is alive, plus the reformed former Black Siren, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), is now Earth-2's Black Canary fighting alongside a new Hood, Adrian Chase (Josh Segarra).

However, in Earth-2's reality, Thea Queen overdosed on the narcotic Vertigo and died on her 18th birthday. This set off a chain reaction of events from Arrow season 1 playing out very differently. For one thing, the Undertaking - which was originally Malcolm Merlyn's supervillain plan to destroy the Glades with an earthquake machine - was now planned to occur six years later. This time, the Undertaking is Tommy's scheme to wipe out the Glades; the younger Merlyn is the Dark Archer on Earth-2 and his motivation to kill thousands of people is centered around losing Thea. As Thea's half-brother, Tommy was distraught by her death and he blamed the crime in the Glades for getting Thea hooked on Vertigo; the Earth-2 Undertaking is Tommy's revenge for Thea.

ADVERTISING

On Earth-1, Thea did overdose on Vertigo on her 18th birthday (in the Arrow season 1 episode "Trust But Verify") but she got in a car crash, which she survived. Thea went on to have a heroic arc of her own; she discovered Malcolm Merlyn was her true father and he trained her in the martial arts of the League of Assassins. Thea eventually joined Team Arrow and became a costumed archer named Speedy; she also became Oliver's Chief of Staff when her big brother was elected Star City's Mayor. However, after a difficult life that includes being rescued from near-death thanks to the Lazarus Pit, Thea eventually left the madness of Star City behind to build a new life for herself with her boyfriend Roy Harper (Colton Haynes). And, although Thea has been dead for years on Earth-2, Willa Holland will reprise her role for Arrow's final season.

ADVERTISING

Arrow's season 8 premiere was filled with even more callbacks to Arrow season 1. Oliver discovered Earth-1's John Diggle (David Ramsey) followed him to Earth-2 and posed as his bodyguard, just like he did when they originally met and Ollie even used the same tricks to try to evade Dig's shadow. Oliver's return to his family's mansion played out almost identically to the events in Arrow's pilot, only Tommy was in Thea's place and Malcolm substituted for Moira's second husband on Earth-1, Walter Steele (Colin Salmon). Of course, Tommy's plan to level the Glades was similar to his father's on Earth-1, only the younger Merlyn utilized dwarf star technology instead of an earthquake machine; the Dark Archer's rooftop fight with Green Arrow is similar to Oliver's fight with Malcolm in the Arrow season 1 finale.

ADVERTISING

Given that the events of "Starling City" happened years later then they did on Earth-1, there were some notable changes, like Black Canary having her own underground bunker headquarters, which was inspired by Oliver's and Laurel's time working with Team Arrow on Earth-1. Tragically, the Arrow season 8 premiere ended with the total destruction of Earth-2 by an antimatter wave, which is the harbinger for the Multiversal doom imminent in Crisis On Infinite Earths.

The CW Is Finally Developing a Man of Steel Show Called Superman & Lois

Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the inevitable Superman expansion of the Arrowverse on the CW! News broke today that the House of Berlanti is now at work on Superman & Lois, which would star Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising the roles they have previously played on the network’s superhero programming. Berlanti will write the script with The Flash showrunner Todd Helbing — who left that post earlier this year to focus on this new script — and while it’s not officially green-lit yet, it seems crazy to think the CW would pass on adding the Man of Steel to its massive DC lineup. The narrative focus sounds somewhat grounded, dealing with “all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.” Surely there will be some crime fighting thrown in, too, but also, PTA meetings? May you live long enough to see your favorite superheroes become boring parents.

Lucifer star Tom Ellis has cleared up whether he'll actually be making an appearance in the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover – and you have to take the Devil at his word, right?
This winter's Multiverse-merging TV event is going to be bringing together DC series from the past and present as the Anti-Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) tries to reshape all of reality in his image.
One of the many Easter eggs that fans thought they spotted was Lucifer's Tom Ellis recently filming alongside the other Arrowverse regulars in Vancouver, although supposedly it's not what it seemed.

"Right, okay, see... this is what happens," he started explaining to Entertainment Tonight. "I go to Vancouver for the weekend to visit my friend for his birthday and now suddenly, I'm in a different show!"
Asked directly if Lucifer would be in Crisis, he insisted: "No! Hard pass, sorry... Sorry fans."
But that's exactly what he would say if he realised his cameo had been rumbled, eh? Regardless of whether Lucifer Morningstar turns up in Crisis on Infinite Earths, lots of other shows will be represented.
