Agents Of SHIELD season 5 will arrive this year after all\

We were told the fifth season of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn't land until 2018, but those plans have now changed...

mansons-lost-girls.jpg

A bit of "I beg your pardon?" news came out of the Television Critics Association’s press tour yesterday, when ABC Chief Channing Dungey announced that a planned 2018 return for the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. was no longer on the table, and that a new season of the show would be arriving much sooner than expected.

SEE RELATED
How Ghost Rider & Agents Of SHIELD invigorated each other
“It’s going to come on right after Inhumans,” Dungey remarked. “As soon as the eight episodes of Inhumans is done, then S.H.I.E.L.D. will begin.”

So, anyone left feeling a little lost for new small screen Marvel entertainment after Inhumans bows won't have to take much of a breath, as season 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will start right after the it finishes. Okay. Since Inhumans starts on September 29th, that's, er [calculator noises] well, it's earlier than 2018.

It's been a bit of a week for S.H.I.E.L.D., as Deadline have also confirmed that the series has cast a "major" mystery character for a multiple-episode arc in season 5. The actor playing this character? Jeff Ward, of Manson’s Lost Girls.

No further details have been revealed, except this:

Biscuits on standby.

More as we have it.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 release date
Early November, looks like.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 cast
Marvel's flagship TV project - the spy show Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. - has officially been renewed for its fifth season.

But if you were hoping to see deceased characters like Grant Ward, Antoine Triplett and Lincoln Campbell returning to life through the magic of The Framework and AIDA's body-making machine, it's probably best to put a pin in those hopes.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jed Whedon explained that "scheduling, or personal issues, or other shows that take our people away" are behind the decision to not bring any of those dead characters back.

Also, Jeff Bell stressed that AIDA "rebuilt her body out of dark stuff from a dark, terrible universe, so she wasn’t exactly human [...] There was a Darkhold filter through which she came, so it seemed that anyone who came back that way was not, in fact, really themselves, but some corrupted version of themselves."

Yup. It's probably best not to hold your breath, if it's a reborn Grant Ward that you want.

This is for the best, in a way. Keeping hold of a machine that can easily bring anyone back from the dead would totally nullify the stakes.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 Clark Gregg
it looks like Clark Gregg, who stars as the ever-loveable Agent Phil Coulson, might be stepping behind the camera.

From one sort of director gig to another (geddit? Coulson was the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a while. Arf!), Mr Gregg has suggested that he might call the shots on an episode during Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5.

"I may direct an episode in season 5", Gregg told fans in a Reddit AMA, "if I don't pass out from exhaustion just thinking about it."

It's no new thing for actors to direct episodes of their own show. Loads of stars have done it before, such as Tom Cavanagh, who very recently shot an hour of The Flash.

Gregg has experience behind the camera, too. He shot the 2008 film Choke and the 2013 movie Trust Me.

Agent Carter producers still keen to bring the show back
The producers behind Marvel's Agent Carter would bring the series back "tomorrow", given half a chance...

Marvel's Agent Carter was ditched after its second season by ABC, but after the show's cancellation everyone involved seemed genuinely crestfallen and eager to revive the series elsewhere.

Agent Carter: ABC didn't discuss cancellation with Marvel
Nothing has changed on that front, it appears. Executive producers Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas were recently asked by IGN if they were still up for more Agent Carter at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, and they left no doubt in our minds that more adventures with Peggy would be an absolute dream for the pair.

The two producers are still working at ABC on a new comedy series entitled Kevin (Probably) Saves The World, but they join Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell and countless others behind the scenes in their wishes to bring Peggy back.

"Yes, we would do Agent Carter tomorrow, at the same time as this show. I love that show," Fazekas confirmed.

The series followed Atwell's Carter as she tried to climb the ranks of a fairly misogynistic Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) in 1940s America, regularly teaming up with Iron Man's dad Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) and his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D'Arcy) to thwart the burgeoning business of deadly threats in the Atomic Age.

Season 1 and 2 are both available now across multiple formats, and are well worth a watch.

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ star Chloe Bennet changed her last name from Wang due to ‘racist’ Hollywood

Actress Chloe Bennet called Hollywood “racist” during an Instagram battle with a follower who questioned her decision to change her last name from Wang to Bennet.

Bennet, born Chloe Wang, took to Instagram on Tuesday to support Ed Skein’s decision to leave “Hellboy” in order to avoid whitewashing an Asian character.

The “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” star, who is of Chinese descent on her dad’s side, wrote, “DAMN, that’s a man. Thank you @edskrein for standing up against hollywoods continuous insensitivity and flippant behavior towards the Asian American community.”

In the comments, a follower — whose account is now deleted — apparently questioned Bennet’s decision to change her last name from Wang to Bennet. The actress quickly clapped back.

“Changing my last name,” Bennet, 25, wrote, “doesn’t change the fact that...I was culturally raised both American and Chinese. It means I had to pay my rent, and Hollywood is racist and wouldn’t cast me with a last name that made them uncomfortable.”

Bennet’s current surname is her father’s first name — a way to honor him despite dropping his last name. She told The Toronto Star in 2014 that it was only a matter of days after changing her name that she landed her first big role on ABC’s “Nashville” in 2012.

“I’m doing everything I can,” she continued on Instagram, “with the platform I have, to make sure no one has to change their name again, just so they can get work. So kindly love, f--k off.”

Bennet recently called out model Gigi Hadid and TV host Steve Harvey for their insensitive remarks about Asians. Hadid seemingly made “Asian eyes” in an instagram video and Harvey said Asian men weren’t “sexy.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5: Nick Blood Returning as Lance Hunter

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 will see the return of Nick Blood as former agent Lance Hunter. The first television offshoot from Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe launched on ABC in the fall of 2013 and the first season was largely hit or miss – that is, until Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s tie-in episode with Captain America: The Winter Soldier completely changed the landscape of the show for the better. In season 2, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued to deal with Hydra and added two characters who quickly became fan-favorites: Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Blood).

In fact, the characters were so popular that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 featured a storyline in which they were disavowed from the organization so that the duo could leave the show in order to headline their own spinoff, titled Marvel’s Most Wanted. However, ABC chose not to move forward with Most Wanted, which left the characters of Bobbi and Hunter in the unfortunate position of being disavowed by S.H.I.E.L.D. and seemingly unable to ever return. But, anything is possible in comic book TV shows, and it seems at least one of these characters is returning.

RELATED: ABC IS STILL THE ‘MOTHERSHIP’ FOR MARVEL TV

EW is reporting that Blood will reprise his role as Lance Hunter in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, but for how long and the details about his return are being kept under wraps. EW additionally shared a photo of Blood on the set of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., reading a script for the series. Take a look below:

Agents-of-SHIELD-Nick-Blood-On-Set.jpg

Agents of SHIELD Nick Blood On Set Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5: Nick Blood Returning as Lance Hunter

While Hunter’s return is no doubt a mystery for fans the puzzle over, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has kept most details about season 5 under wraps. The season 4 finale featured a major cliffhanger with the core S.H.I.E.L.D. team eating in a diner before being taken away by a team of what seemed to be government agents, only for Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) to wake up in a room with a view of outer space.

Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t return until Inhumans wraps up its debut season – which will likely be around mid-November – little about the upcoming season is known. Rumors have pointed to the Kree, the alien race that created Inhumans, and the Secret Warriors, Daisy Johnson’s (Chloe Bennet) team of Inhumans, returning in season 5, though it remains to be seen if either or both of these reports turn out to be true. One thing we do know is that it’s highly unlikely Bobbi Morse will return in season 5 – mainly because Palicki is busy with her new show, Seth MacFarlane’s sendup to Star Trek, The Orville.

Still, Hunter’s return certainly seems to leave to door open for Bobbi to eventually be brought back into the fold in some way, should Palicki have time to reprise her role. Additionally, Hunter’s return will be a welcome one for fans who enjoyed his original turn on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But, it remains to be seen how he comes back and how long he stays, and we’ll hopefully get a better idea of those details once we get closer to the premiere date of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5.

Man heads should be rolling for that shit.

Why not just put Joss Weldon Bother and his wife in charge of the TV side of the MCU. They proven they know what they doing like the Russo Brothers.

Nah, I would take Douglas Petrie & Marco Ramirez over Whedon's family. They were producers on the first season of Daredevil, then they were the show runners of S2 of Daredevil and Defenders.

Why Disney Saved Agents of SHIELD From Being Cancelled

Yesterday, word broke that Disney stepped in to save Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from being canceled. With each season of the show, fans and the industry have wondered if the flagship Marvel show would survive. It’s long suffered from low ratings, despite an uptick in critical attention as the show has moved toward crafting more consistent stories. Still, each season renewal by ABC has been met with both a sigh of relief and a scratching of the head by fans.

Given that, it’s not surprising to hear that ABC wanted to give the series the axe after its fourth season. Why then, would Disney come down from on high and save a show the film side of things has blatantly ignored for the past four years?

The most obvious answer to the question is the one fans have used for years when theorizing why SHIELD has been continually renewed: stability. The show isn’t a massive runaway hit, but it does have a substantial audience, especially once streaming numbers are factored in. Add to that the show’s dedicated fan base and social media following, and it’s not hard to see why ABC and Disney might want the series to stick around.

There’s also the fact that Marvel TV shows are cropping up everywhere. Netflix is about to release its sixth series with The Punisher, while Freeform will be gaining Cloak & Dagger and New Warriors. Even Hulu will soon have Runaways. To have ABC, Disney’s main network, without a Marvel show would not be a good look. Furthermore, SHIELD can continue to project the image of a stalwart show well into its years that maintains an image of consistency while new shows fail around it.

The decision to keep SHIELD on the air came long before critics had begun laying into Inhumans. Still, the show was always a risky prospect. Many fans assumed the renewal of SHIELD was for the purposes of waiting to see how Inhumans performed. If it was a smash hit, ABC could end SHIELD and still have a Marvel show. If it failed, SHIELDwould remain the rock that future series could be built around. Add in all the potential for connections between the two series given that SHIELD has a healthy amount of Inhuman lore already, and the appeal seems obvious. And now that Inhumans is being lambasted left and right, the move was clearly a smart one.

There’s no word yet that Inhumans will be cancelled, but things don’t look good. And it’s certainly not the first time Marvel has fumbled when trying to kick off a new show. After two seasons, Agent Carter was taken off the air despite a strong fan following. Since then, star Hayley Atwell and many of Marvel’s key creatives have expressed their desire to bring the show back in some form. Considering how much Peggy Carter has traveled around the MCU, it does seem hard to believe Atwell will be gone for too long. But at least her show got a shot.

For two years, fans were jerked back on forth over the possibility that a spinoff called Marvel’s Most Wanted would put the spotlight on Mockingbird and Lance Hunter. After being passed up, it was revived the next year and a pilot was shot. The cast was filled out, a logo arrived, and Bobbi and Hunter were given a tearful goodbye on the series. Sadly, ABC changed leadership and the new boss decided the series was a too much of the same. In fairness, this criticism was true. Unfortunately, it meant two of SHIELD’s best characters were now gone.

On top of that, we’ve spent just as many years hearing that Marvel would jump into comedy with a Damage Controlseries. With the group appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the future is uncertain, however. Then there’s John Ridley and his mysterious project. For the past few years, word of it being on and then off again have come every few months.

THE PROMISE OF SPINOFFS
Aside from keeping a steady and stable show around in the face of failing new prospects, the other big reason Disney could be keeping SHIELD around is to furnish spinoffs. That was certainly the idea with Most Wanted, and even Damage Control was first referenced on SHIELD. With four seasons of material, SHIELD is the perfect vehicle to spin out new shows that could take its place or boost its success. And there’s no shortage of characters to use.

We’ve already seen Yo-Yo get a webseries with the show Slingshot, and she could easily be part of a larger show focused on the Secret Warriors and the non-royal Inhumans of the MCU. Even more likely is a show involving Ghost Rider. Robbie Reyes’ debut was met with a strong reception, and fans have been calling for him to get his own series. While Netflix would certainly allow for a darker show, and a potential Thunderbolts spinoff, ABC could be in the market for a supernatural comic book series.

Like The CW has done with Arrow, SHIELD is the perfect incubator for testing new characters and ideas. And while nothing has taken off so far, there are still plenty of opportunities. We recently learned that Marvel is still very interested in comedy and also has plans for an ABC series akin to Jessica Jones. There are a number of possibilities for what that series could be, and it’s not hard to imagine Quake or Yo-Yo leading their own show.

IT’S ALL CONNECTED
The final reason for Disney sticking with SHIELD even in the face of defeat ties into the idea of spinning out new content. But while setting up new shows seems likely, SHIELD can also help bring new concepts into the MCU on the film side. So far, we haven’t seen any TV show referenced in the films, despite the sprawling reach of the narrative in SHIELD and other shows. Still, characters like Coulson and Agent Carter provide a strong bridge to the world of the Avengers. SHIELD also allows Disney and Marvel to more quickly set up ideas that could be run within the films. After all, the Kree first appeared on the show before debuting in Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Inhumans arrived even before plans for their movie.

This season on SHIELD, the action is heading to space. That could mean an organization like S.W.O.R.D. is coming to the MCU. While the rights of the group seem to reside with Fox, we broke down the legalities of Marvel using theminstead earlier this year. If Marvel have their sights set on SWORD in the movie universe, we could easily see SHIELDstake its claim to keep the group away from Fox.

There’s also the chance that the Skrulls could make their first appearance on TV. It seems like a stretch, but again, the Kree were already rolled out in this way. It’s not hard to imagine the shape-shifting aliens making their presence known on SHIELD before Captain Marvel brings them to the big screen in 2019.

Regardless of the reasoning, Agents of SHIELD will be back sometime this winter after Inhumans wraps. And while it’s easy to see this season as the last one, there’s more and more evidence that ABC and Disney aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to their first Marvel TV show.

DISNEY REPORTEDLY REFUSED TO LET ABC CANCEL AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Like many Marvel fans, I made a point of checking out Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. upon its debut on ABC in 2013, and, unfortunately, like many other Marvel fans, I checked out from the series after just a few episodes. I hear that the series improved greatly as it went on, but for whatever reason, I haven't been back. Ratings for the series have steadily declined since its debut, and, with the fourth season hitting all-time lows, many fans were wondering whether they'd seen the last of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his band of agents. ABC renewed the series for the fifth season just prior to the fourth season finale, but if they'd had their way, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would have been ended up on the chopping block.

If you're an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fan, you can apparently thank Disney for the choice to renew the series. According to a report from Variety, ABC was facing the challenge of having to demonstrate growth across the board in order to dig themselves out of their ratings rut, and the network was ready to make some cuts. One of those cuts would have been Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but Disney apparently pulled rank and ordered the show's renewal. The fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is expected to begin airing later this year after Inhumans finishes its eight-episode run, but the series has now been moved to a Friday time-slot instead of the Tuesday time-slot it's occupied since its debut. Ruh oh.

https://mcuexchange.com/nycc-shield-season-5-premiere/

Earlier today, it was revealed during the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel at New York Comic-Con that show would be returning to our TV screens on December 1st, kicking the season off with a whopping 2-hour premiere! If that wasn’t enough to excite the hell out of you, these details regarding the 20-minute premiere episode preview, courtesy of our very own Caleb Borchers, might do the trick.

SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST EPISODE, OBVIOUSLY!!

  • Their shady kidnappers from the end of Season 4 are revealed to be aliens.
  • HkPOzEH.jpg

  • Fitz is the only agent from Coulson’s team to be left on Earth.
  • The space station Coulson and the agents are stranded in are filled with aliens. Our boy Caleb says they’re referred to as “roaches.” Blue creatures with long tails that walk on all fours and climb walls. Full CGI.
  • Some time travel/displacement is hinted. The aliens are fully aware who Coulson and his team are, backstory and all. Caleb says the SHIELD agents are somewhat regarded as legendary heroes of sorts.
  • There’s a new mysterious character whose mask resembles Star Lord’s mixed with Iron Man’s helmet.
  • An obelisk resembling the Season 3 monolith is present in the episode as well. Caleb describes it as “a white monolith that functions like the black one, but with three red stripes. Very high sci-fi concept feel to that scene.” The scene implies that it’s the device that transports them to the space station.
  • A fight breaks out. Yo-Yo, Mack, and Quake all kickass. May is impaled somewhere else on the ship.
  • The clip had a very “horror/sci-fi vibe. bloodier than most previous episodes” as per Caleb.
Pardon the French but holy fucking shit! This episode sounds crazy awesome. Aliens. Weird time travel implications. It definitely seems that they are going all out for this season. These descriptions raise a lot of fun and interesting questions about the show. Like why is Fitz the only one stuck on Earth? Why do these aliens look to the team as legends? Are they still even in the same year as us? Why can’t this show premiere now?!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Adrianne Palicki ‘Would Absolutely’ Come Back

Adrianne Palicki has declared herself game for a return to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fold at some point in the future. Joining the show in 2014 alongside Nick Blood (Lance Hunter), Palicki portrayed S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, otherwise known as Mockingbird, but the duo left the show in season three episode “Parting Shot” after being forced to leave the titular organization.

The intention was that Palicki and Blood – both of whom were well received by fans – would go on to star in their own spinoff series entitled Marvel’s Most Wanted but after an unaired pilot, the project was never picked up for a full series, leaving fans of Bobbi and Hunter out in the cold. Although Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s recent Framework storyline allowed for the return of some previously departed characters such as Agent Triplett and Grant Ward, both Bobbi and Hunterremained absent. Interestingly, it has since been confirmed that Nick Blood’s Hunter will be returning in the forthcoming season 5.

Adrianne Palicki, currently starring in The Orville, has now confirmed that she’d be very interested in reprising the character of Mockingbird in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Speaking at New York Comic Con (via the International Business Times), the actress stated:

“If they ask me, I would absolutely come back. I know Nick’s coming back, so what are they gonna do without Bobbi is all I’m asking. I would absolutely make a cameo. For sure.”

Although it certainly sounds like Palicki’s experience on Most Wanted hasn’t deterred her from working with Marvel in the future, her added “cameo” caveat does bring into question whether the actress would return to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on a full-time basis. Her current position alongside Seth MacFarlane on The Orville would perhaps make a proper return for Bobbi unlikely in the immediate future but if the science-fiction drama/comedy hybrid proves to be short-lived, Palicki may find herself up for more than a simple cameo appearance.

One sizeable question mark hanging over any future re-appearance of either Bobbi or Hunter is how those two, currently Earth-bound, characters will fit into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5’s space setting. As revealed at the end of season 4, Coulson and the gang have been kidnapped by a mysterious group and currently find themselves prisoners on board an unidentified space station. With the Most Wanted duo seemingly out of the spy game, they’re unlikely to have the resources necessary to be of any use to their former S.H.I.E.L.D. colleagues.

With that said, Nick Blood’s return to the show may provide some indication of how a future reappearance for Bobbi could work. The two characters had excellent chemistry and entangled character arcs, meaning when Hunter does come back in season 5, he’ll likely give viewers an update on Bobbi’s status to boot.
