Teacher’s Gun Is Accidentally Fired During Public Safety Class, Injuring 3

As thousands of students walked out of their schools on Wednesday to pressure Congress to approve gun control legislation, three other students were healing from wounds inflicted when a teacher’s firearm accidentally discharged in a California classroom.

The teacher, Dennis Alexander, who is also a city councilman in Seaside, Calif., was showing the students a gun on Tuesday during his advanced public safety class at Seaside High School when the gun accidentally went off, Marci McFadden, a spokeswoman for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Mr. Alexander was pointing his gun at the ceiling when it fired, she said, causing pieces of the ceiling to fall to the floor. Ms. McFadden said that California law and district policy prohibit teachers from bringing guns on campus.

Cmdr. Nick Borges of the Seaside Police Department said in an email on Wednesday that nobody suffered serious injuries, however, a piece of bullet shrapnel ricocheted and hit one 17-year-old on the neck, and two other students were also hit by debris.

The 17-year-old boy’s parents told the television station KSBW that they took him to a hospital for X-rays after he returned home.

“He’s shaken up, but he’s going to be O.K.,” the boy’s father, Fermin Gonzales, told KSBW. “I’m just pretty upset that no one told us anything and we had to call the police ourselves to report it.”

When asked why the parents had not been informed about the accident, Ms. McFadden said she could not comment because the matter was under investigation.

Mr. Alexander’s class, which includes 32 juniors and seniors, has been offered for a couple of years as one of the school’s career technical education offerings, Ms. McFadden said. She said she did not know whether students are normally shown guns during the class.

Mr. Alexander was placed on administrative leave at both Seaside High School and the Sand City Police Department, where he works about four hours a week as a reserve police officer whenever the department is short-handed, Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Mr. Alexander, who has been employed by the school district since 1994, did not immediately respond to messages on Wednesday.

Across the country, another school was also investigating a weapon that discharged accidentally this week. The Alexandria Police Department in Virginia said that a school resource officer accidentally fired his gun inside his office at George Washington Middle School on Tuesday morning. Nobody was hurt, the police said.

The officer, whose name was not released, is a five-year veteran of the Police Department and has been placed on administrative leave during its investigation of the episode, the police said.

Both accidents occurred just days after President Trump vowed to push ahead on his proposal to arm school employees with guns, a controversial idea that would entail partnering with local law enforcement to provide teachers and other school officials with firearms training after a gunman killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Feb. 14.

“Cowards will only go where there is no deterrent!” Mr. Trump said in a tweet on Monday.

The latest mass shooting prompted thousands of students at hundreds of schools to walk out of class on Wednesday to protest gun violence, the culmination of weeks of public outrage at the glacial pace of gun reform, a topic that has remained prominent in the news largely through the efforts of a group of social media-savvy students from Stoneman Douglas.

In Washington, where the gun debate has remained static, Mr. Trump has not indicated a willingness to disrupt the way things stand. On Monday, he discarded a proposal to raise the age limit to purchase rifles. “Not much political support (to put it mildly),” Mr. Trump said in a tweet.

Instead, Mr. Trump has advocated improving reporting to the national background check system — a step that is backed by the National Rifle Association.

A Florida mom was arrested when authorities found her carelessly swinging around a stroller with a barely clothed baby boy inside despite the cold, according to officials.

Deputies said they tracked down Pamela Lee Davis, 30, shortly after midnight Tuesday after receiving a tip about a suspicious, possibly drunk woman pushing a child’s stroller in North Fort Meyers, The News-Press reported.

Davis was reportedly discovered “uncontrollably, thrashing about wildly” with the stroller.

Inside, the 1-year-old boy was wearing one sock and minimal clothing despite the weather being in the mid-50s, news station WBBH reported.

Officers said the infant was cold to the touch and was wearing a soiled diaper.

In the arrest report, officers described the mom’s behavior as “tweeking” and said she was unable to stop gyrating. They believe she may have been under the influence of amphetamines, according to the news station.

Davis, who is homeless, was arrested on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a child. She was booked at Lee County Jail, where she is being held on $5,000 bond.

The baby was removed from her custody while the Florida Department of Children investigates.

“We have opened a child protection investigation as a result of the concerning incident,” the agency said. “At this time, the child is under the custody of the department.”

Boynton Beach Police bodycam video shows officers interacting with a man who they pretended to be a US Marshal and stole an iPhone X from a local Best Buy store. (Published Thursday, March 22, 2018)
Boynton Beach Police have arrested a man who they say impersonated a law enforcement officer.

Officers responded to a trespassing call at a local Best Buy store, in which employees say John O’Grady was seen shoplifting several days earlier and stole an iPhone 10, according to a police report.

When officers approached O’Grady, they noticed a US Marshals pin attached to his business suit and asked if he was a law enforcement officer. O’Grady responded by saying he was a US Marshal.

Officers searched O’Grady and found a firearm that turned out to be a BB gun, and what appeared to be an authentic US Marshals badge attached to his belt in the front of his pants. O’Grady told officers that he was in fact not a US Marshal and that his firearm was fake when they asked for his supervisor’s name.

"Congratulations, that's a felony," said one of the officers on bodycam footage of the incident.

Authorities also found another Deputy US Marshal badge and a white iPhone X in O’Grady’s car that store employees say matches the serial number of the device stolen days earlier.

O’Grady was taken into custody and now faces charges of impersonating a law enforcement officer and retail grand theft.

A teenage couple has been charged for taking photographs of another overdosed girl's body and posting them on social media before loading her into their car and running out of gas before they could make it to hospital.

Lillie Cooper, 18, and John Guffey, 19, have been indicted on charges of corpse abuse and criminally negligent homicide.

They were with 18-year-old Caitlyn Spears when she overdosed in a house last April in Grant, Alabama.

It is not clear what drug she took or if she died instantly. Instead of calling 911, Cooper and Guffey allegedly 'dragged' her around and took photographs of her body.

They posted the images on Snapchat and Facebook and jokingly tried to wake her up, according to the victim's friends.

Eventually, the pair loaded her into a car and tried to drive her to hospital but they ran out of gas on the way.

They were forced to call for help at a gas station. When firefighters arrived, they found Caitlyn unresponsive in the vehicle. She was later pronounced dead.

Cooper was underage at the time and Guffey was 18. It is not known how the trio knew one another.

Caitlyn's relatives claim Cooper and Guffey jokingly said 'RIP' as they dragged her body around in the video.

They have launched a petition to try to change the law in Alabama to make it illegal not to help someone if they are dying.

Cooper and Guffey both posted bond and were released from county jail this week.

The young couple will return to court at a later date.

It is not clear how long exactly the pair waited before trying to take Caitlyn to hospital.

In a report seen by AL.com, police described it as an 'extended period of time'.

Authorities were not immediately available for comment on Friday afternoon.

Wife of cop killer Luis Bracamontes sentenced to at least 50 years in prison

The wife of an undocumented immigrant jailed for murdering two California officers will likely spend the rest of her life behind bars for the role she played in her husband’s 2014 crime spree.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White sentenced Janelle Monroy to nearly 50 years behind bars after jurors last month rejected her claims that she acted out of fear Luis Bracamontes would kill her.

“Ms. Monroy, you did not start this reign of terror, but you joined in immediately after as an active participant,” White told her, according toThe Sacramento Bee.

A Sacramento jury last month found Bracamontes guilty for the murders of Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer Sheriff’s Detective Michael Davis Jr.

He spent much of his trial with a grin on his face, at times bursting into fits of giggles as prosecutors described his day-long tear on Oct. 24, 2014.

Investigators said the crime spree began in a Motel Six, where he shot and killed Oliver in the parking lot. Bracamontes and Monroy then led police on an hours-long chase through Placer County into Auburn — where the spree came to a violent end.

(RICH PEDRONCELLI/AP)
Bracamontes was discovered hiding in a residence not far from the where the shootout unfolded while his wife surrendered to deputies at the scene.

Monroy’s attorney, Pete Kmeto, described his client as a battered wife before the jury convicted her in February.

“She’s not the person who killed law enforcement officers,” Kmeto said, emphasizing that she never once pulled a trigger.

She was found guilty of murder and nine other counts for her role in deadly incident, including the shooting death of Davis by her husband.

White sentenced her to 24 years and 10 months for a variety of counts to be served before a 25 year to life sentence for Davis’ murder.

Wisconsin dad sentenced to 60 years in prison for attempting to sell daughter, 4, for sex on Craigslist

Andrew Turley was sentenced to 60 years in prison in Texas Friday for attempting to sell his 4-year-old daughter for sex on Craigslist. (Houston Police Department )

A Wisconsin man was sentenced to 60 years in prison in Texas Friday for attempting to sell his 4-year-old daughter for sex on Craigslist.

Andrew Turley, 30, was convicted of “trafficking a child and compelling prostitution of someone under the age of 18,” the Houston Chronicle reported.

In 2015, Turley posted an advertisement on Craigslist titled “Play with Daddie’s Little Girl.” The Houston Police Department exchanged emails with Turley who told them he had “a girl younger than 10” who he could drug with “sleep meds” before the meeting, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said.

WALMART, COSTCO, TARGET IN TEXAS WON THE RIGHT TO SELL LIQUOR, BUT SOME ARE FIGHTING TO APPEAL

Turley told the officers it was $1,000 for two hours with his daughter and stated the child “might be too young for intercourse but everything else was OK.”

An officer went to meet with Turley and his daughter at the Houston apartment she lived in with her mother.

"Upon the undercover officer's arrival, Turley checked the cash, then escorted him to a bedroom where the girl was lying in bed and appeared to be 'under the influence of an unknown substance,'" the attorney’s office said.

GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH, FLOATING ‘ISLAND’ OF TRASH IN OCEAN, IS NOW TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS

Assistant District Attorney Stewanna Miskell, one of the prosecutors, said the case “broke her heart.”

"A father is supposed to be a protector not a predator. Jurors saw the need to keep him out of our community,” she said.

Turley will be eligible for parole in 45 years.

A former television star was among those who chased down officers after they took away cult leader Keith Raniere in the Mexican resort village of Puerto Vallarta over the weekend.

Video that was first obtained by Art Voice shows Smallville actress Allison Mack in a state of disbelief as officials arrest Raniere, four months after he crossed the border following the launch of a federal probe.

The women can then be heard saying that they are going to get into a car and follow the officers.

A local authority tells DailyMail.com that the women then engaged in a high-speed car chase with police.

The 57-year-old leader of the secretive New York-based group called NXIVM was taken into custody by Mexican authorities after he was found surrounded by a group of women at a $10,000-a-week luxury villa on Sunday.

Raniere was extradited to Fort Worth, Texas on Monday and charged with sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy.

An individual with former ties to NXIVM tells DailyMail.com that Mack was joined in the video by a group of women including actress Nicki Clyne and high-profile members Lauren Salzman and Loreta Garza.

The same source described Mack as Raniere's right-hand woman at NXIVM.

The actress only recently traveled down to Mexico however, with her social media showing her in the area for just the past month.

The group, which has been described by former members as a 'sex cult', claims to be a self-help organization that operates centers in US, Mexico, Canada and South America.

It emerged last year that the Dalai Lama was paid $1 million to speak to 3,000 NXIVM followers and place a khata - a traditional ceremonial Tibetan scarf - around Raniere's neck.

Raniere left the US last year after the New York Times reported that some women who joined a group in his organization had been branded with a symbol that included his initials.

The women told investigators they were subjected to 'master-slave' conditions that involved physical punishments for disobeying orders.

'As alleged in the complaint, Keith Raniere created a secret society of women whom he had sex with and branded with his initials, coercing them with the threat of releasing their highly personal information and taking their assets,' US attorney Richard P. Donoghue said.

The complaint says Raniere founded NXIVM about 20 years ago and held a series of purported self-help workshops.

Since NXIVM's creation, Raniere has maintained poly-amorous relationships with its members, according to the complaint.

Courses associated with the group costs thousands of dollars each and participants are encouraged to pay for additional classes and to recruit others in order to rise within the ranks of NXIVM.

According to the complaint, Raniere created a secret society within Nxivm called DOS in 2015, which loosely translated to 'Lord/Master of the Obedient Female Companions', or 'The Vow'.

Many DOS slaves were branded on their pelvic areas using a cauterizing pen with a symbol which, unbeknownst to them, incorporated Raniere's initials, according to past members

Former Dynasty star Catherine Oxenberg had previously met with prosecutors in New York to detail her daughter India's experience in the group

DOS operated with levels of women slaves headed by masters and most were recruited from within NXIVM's ranks.

When new DOS slaves were recruited, they were required to provide collateral, which included highly damaging information about friends and family members, nude photographs and/or rights to the recruit's assets.

The complaint says DOS slaves feared that their collateral could be released by the group if they left.

Many DOS slaves were branded on their pelvic areas using a cauterizing pen with a symbol which, unbeknownst to them, incorporated Raniere's initials, according to the court documents.

During the branding ceremonies, slaves were required to be fully naked and a master would order one slave to film the branding while the others restrained the slave being branded.

Smallville actress Allison Mack was considering a high-ranking member of the cult and was believed to have been second in charge to Raniere.

Former Dynasty star Catherine Oxenberg had previously met with prosecutors in New York to detail her daughter's experience in the group.

Oxenberg, through her lawyers at Lewis Baach Kaufmann Middlemiss, said she hoped Raniere's arrest would go as far as reuniting her with her daughter.

'I want to help all the young women affected by this cult. They are the victims of human trafficking, which is slavery,' she said.

'For months, I have worked to expose Keith Raniere and Nxivm and today's arrest vindicates my efforts.

'I want my daughter to know I love her and that I want her back in my life.'

If convicted, Raniere could be sentenced to life in prison.

'As alleged, Keith Raniere displayed a disgusting abuse of power in his efforts to denigrate and manipulate women he considered his sex slaves,' FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney said.

'He allegedly participated in horrifying acts of branding and burning them, with the cooperation of other women operating within this unorthodox pyramid scheme.

'These serious crimes against humanity are not only shocking, but disconcerting to say the least, and we are putting an end to this torture today.'

A UK man has contracted the “world’s worst” case of “super” gonorrhea – a powerful new version of the sexually transmitted disease that’s highly resistant to a number of antibiotics, according to a report.

Public Health England announced that the unidentified man picked up the dangerous STD during a hookup with a woman in South East Asia earlier this year.

After developing symptoms a month later, the man’s urine tested negative for the bacterial infection – but a throat swab was positive.

The World Health Organization and the European Centres for Disease Control agree that his case is the first globally to show resistance to the first-line treatment for gonorrhea — a combination of antibiotics azithromycin and ceftriaxone — and other drugs, the BBC reported.

“This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics,” said Gwenda Hughes, a doctor with Public Health England.

The man is currently being treated with IV antibiotic ertapenem, which appears to be working — but officials won’t know for sure until mid-April.

Health officials are scrambling to trace any sexual partners to the man in an effort to stop the nasty infection from spreading.

The man’s regular partner in the UK hasn’t tested positive.

Gonorrhea is a very common STD that can be spread through unprotected sexual contact. In most cases, men and women who are infected never show symptom, which can include burning while urinating and white, yellow or green discharge from the penis or vagina. It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Left untreated, gonorrhea can cause infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and can be passed on from a pregnant woman to her child.

Last year, the WHO said antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea was on the rise. An estimated 78 million people are infected with gonorrhea every year.

Cases of an azithromycin-resistant strain of “super” gonorrhea recently tripled in Australia.

A jury was shown the massive gun collection of an Atlanta attorney who shot dead his wife while in the back seat of a car.

Claud 'Tex' McIver, 74, was riding in the back seat with his wife Diane, 63, in the front seat on September 25, 2016, when the gun he was holding went off and killed her.

He described his wife's death as a 'tragic accident' that happened while he was dozing off in the back seat.

However, prosecutors on the twelfth day of his murder trial on Wednesday, argued that McIver was drowning in debt and had to kill his wife to inherit $4million from her.

The prosecution presented to the court that McIver spent much more than he made in salary between 2013 and 2016 after he was stripped of his equity partnership at Atlanta’s Fisher & Phillip.

Accountant Dean Driskell of FTI consulting told jurors that all of McIver's six accounts had negative balances and that he was $245,000 in debt - filling in gaps when need be with his wife's money.

Driskell presented a slide presentation showing a 54 percent drop in salary at McIver's law firm and described the 74-year-old as 'cash poor'.

McIver, 74, was riding in the back seat with his wife, 63, in the front seat on September 25, 2016, when the gun he was holding went off and killed her which he called a 'tragic accident'

But an accountant told jurors that all of McIver's six accounts had negative balances and that he was $245,000 in debt - filling in gaps when need be with his wife's money. The accountant testified that McIver (pictured, Tuesday) was worth about $1.7million on the day of his wife's death, but he inherited appropriately $4million from her

'There was more money going out than he had going in,' Driskell said.

An email was shown to the court the McIver wrote to Diane in June 2016 stating how debt was his primary concern.

'I am seriously trying to reduce my monthly expenses,' he wrote. 'Debt is my biggest obstacle right now. Plan on hitting the Lotto sometime this week.'

Driskell testified that McIver was worth about $1.7million on the day of his wife's death, but he inherited appropriately $4million from her.

Prosecutors pointed out his net worth more than tripled after he shot his wife.

Towards the end of the day, the prosecution also showed McIver's massive gun arsenal - 44 weapons including handguns, rifles and shotguns.

Defense attorney Bruce Harvey argued out there is no limit to the number of guns an individual can own.

A Texas judge has revoked bond for the 50-year-old mother of a teenager who used an 'affluenza' defense regarding a fatal drunken-driving wreck.

Tonya Couch was booked into the Tarrant County jail Wednesday.

Court documents show that she failed a urine test required as a condition of her bond but don't specify the substance the urinalysis revealed.

State District Judge Wayne Salvant had warned Couch last June to 'use common sense' pending her trial on hindering apprehension of a felon and money laundering charges.

Ethan Couch is scheduled to be released nine days before his 21st birthday and will remain under probation supervision after the release, said David McClelland, a spokesman for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office.

Couch was 16 and had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit of an adult when he struck and killed four people in June 2013.

At his trial in juvenile court that year, a psychologist testifying on his behalf described Couch as suffering from 'affluenza.'

The psychologist said it was an affliction coming from being spoiled by his parents that prevented him from telling right from wrong.

Couch was sentenced to 10 years of probation, which sparked outrage from critics who ridiculed the affluenza defense and said his family’s wealth had helped keep him out of jail.

But in late 2015, when a social media video surfaced that showed him in possible violation of his drug-and-drink-free probation, he and his mother Tonya Couch fled the United States for Mexico, where the two were later apprehended and deported.

A Tarrant County judge in 2016 then transferred Ethan Couch’s probation supervision to the adult system.

As a condition of the adult probation, the judge ordered him to serve 720 days in jail, 180 days for each of the four crash fatalities.

The sentence was seen as the maximum possible given the various legal mechanisms of a case that spanned the juvenile and adult systems, legal officials said.

Lawyers for Couch have long argued for his release, saying the punishment was excessive and the judge who sentenced him had no authority to place him behind bars.

Tonya Couch was charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive and money laundering.

She had been free on bond for more than two years awaiting trial before a judge revoked bond on Wednesday.
