The adoptive parents of a 13-year-old North Carolina girl who was tortured before she was killed in 2011 have been charged with first-degree murder, authorities said Tuesday.

Casey and Sandy Parsons, already in prison for tax fraud, were indicted by a grand jury on Monday in the slaying of their teen daughter, Erica Parsons.

Erica's body was found in September of 2016 in South Carolina, five years after she vanished. Already in prison, adoptive dad Sandy Parsons had shown investigators where he buried the child shortly before Christmas in 2011.

The teen had lived with her adoptive parents in Rowan County from 2000 until the time of her disappearance.

The couple have been charged with first-degree murder, child abuse, concealment of death and obstruction of justice, according to WBTV.

Experts say the suspects repeatedly inflicted "child torture" on the child, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Erica was not even reported missing until 2013, and the couple went on "Dr. Phil" McGraw's national TV show to plead for help in finding their adoptive daughter.

Sandy Parsons admitted he locked Erica in a closet, beat her "with belt buckle" and bent her fingers back and choked her, according to the Observer.

Both continued to collect benefits and were convicted of tax fraud in 2014.

Russian Olympian Who Wore an 'I Don't Do Doping' Slogan Shirt Just Failed Her Drug Test
image

Nadezhda Sergeeva, pilot of the two-woman bobsled team representing the Olympic Athletes from Russia, proudly proclaimed her anti-doping stance when she appeared in a video wearing a sweatshirt with the slogan “I don’t do doping” stamped brightly across the front.

But that slogan isn’t ringing so true today, after Russian Bobsled Federation president Alexander Zubkov announced that Sergeeva had tested positive for a banned heart medication, apparently the stimulant trimetazidine, in a drug test. The federation says that the bobsledder does not have a prescription for the drug.

Sergeeva and her partner Anastasia Kocherzhova finished 12th in the two-woman bobsled event earlier this week; Germany, the U.S., and Canada took the gold, silver, and bronze. Sergeeva had previously been tested on Feb. 13, with no adverse findings. This announcement marks the second OAR athlete to fail a doping test, following teammate Alexander Krushelnitsky of the curling team; his bronze medal was stripped from him after he tested positive for meldonium. So far, they are the only two Winter Olympics athletes to test positive for banned drugs during these Games.

Naturally, Sergeeva’s unfortunate situation is raising eyebrows — especially given the words on her sweatshirt. Hypocrisy is not a great look.

Russia was barred from officially competing in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics earlier this year because of just this doping issue, although they ultimately cleared 168 athletes to compete as Olympic Athletes from Russia. So far, that delegation has picked up 14 medals, including Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva’s gold and silver in ladies’ figure skating on Thursday event.

Teacher fired shot, barricaded self inside HS classroom, police say

DALTON, Ga.- A teacher is in custody, accused of firing a gun inside a classroom at Dalton High School.

Channel 2’s Chris Joseobtained video that shows students running after they heard gunshots.

Dalton school leaders bused about 2,000 students to the Dalton Convention Center as part of the district's code red evacuation plans as officers descended on the school.

Channel 2 Action News will continue to follow this story and have the latest on Channel 2 Action News This Morning starting at 4:30 a.m.

“I just thought about my daughter. I was scared. I was worried about my child,” parent Topeka White told Jose. “Luckily I was able to get him to text me back and that put peace and ease for sure.”

[Who is Randal Davidson?]

Dalton police say Jesse Randal Davidson, 53, a social studies teacher and a play-by-play football announcer at the school, fired the shot. During his planning period around 11 a.m., police said Davidson locked himself in the classroom.

“When the principal put a key in the door to try to unlock the classroom, Mr. Davidson apparently fired a shot from a handgun to an exterior window of the classroom. It doesn't appear it was aimed at anybody,” Bruce Frazier, with the Dalton Police Department, said.

[Girl sends chilling texts from inside Dalton HS]

Police said the gunshot didn't injure anyone but the school was placed on a code red lockdown.

Jose was able to speak to students over FaceTime at the height of the evacuation.

“It wasn't a drill. And we had to get down and barricade the doors so nobody could come in. Nobody knew what was going on at the time,” student Jayden Boston told Jose.

Dalton High School student Wesley Caceres sent Jose Snapchat video that shows the chaotic scene with students running to a safe location.

White-collar convict makes son shoot him in legs to delay prison
staged2n.jpg

Shannon Egeland will have to serve almost four more years behind bars after convincing his son to shoot him in the leg in order to delay going to prison for mortgage fraud.

Nice try.

A white-collar criminal, already convicted of insurance fraud, will spend more time behind bars after convincing his son to shoot him in the leg with a shotgun in order to delay his prison sentence and collect a disability payout.

Shannon Egeland was sentenced Wednesday to an additional three years and 10 months on top of his already 10-year sentence for mortgage fraud, theOregonian reports.

Egeland, 43, had already pleaded guilty to fraud charges stemming from a 2009 housing scandal in Central Oregon. As co-owner of development company Desert Sun, he helped raise millions from banks in the area through phony business plans and doctored loan applications, officials say.

He was out on bond awaiting sentencing when he came up with a new plan to delay his upcoming prison stint.

With a week to go before his sentencing, Egeland submitted an application for a disability insurance policy with Standard Insurance, falsely claiming he had never been arrested or indicted for either a felony or misdemeanor in the prior 10 years, according to the outlet.

In the days leading up to his sentencing hearing, police say Egeland had his son obtain a 20-gauge shotgun while he purchased ammunition for the weapon.

The day before he was to be sentenced, Egeland drove out to a roadside in Caldwell, Idaho, with his son and persuaded the 17-year-old to shoot him in the leg with the shotgun, authorities say.

The teen did as instructed and shot his father in the lower legs.

Egeland then ordered his son to leave the scene while he called 911 and claimed he was the victim of an assault while stopping to help a pregnant motorist.

When police arrived Egeland said he was struck in the head and shot in the leg.

As a result of the shooting injury, Egeland's left leg was amputated.

Despite his best efforts, Standard Insurance did not suffer an actual loss because the fraud was quickly detected and Egeland's bond was revoked and he was taken back into custody.

Egeland ultimately pleaded guilty in May 2016 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with the shooting scheme, as well as willful failure to pay child support, officials say.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Bradford referred to Egeland in a sentencing memo as a "menace to society,"KOIN reports.

"The psychological and emotional destruction defendant caused this minor child is unimaginable,'' Bradford wrote in the memo.

Judge Anna J. Brown called the staged shooting "an unthinkable kind of situation."

Egeland told the judge he's in need of mental health counseling and treatment and is now taking medications for mental health. He expressed guilt over his son's role in the case, the Oregonian reports.

"What bothers me the most is my son - the pain is on him,'' Egeland said, "The pain that he has shouldn't be there...I've had 3 ½ years to recognize I am broken...If I could take it all back, I would, but I can't...That will haunt me the rest of my life.''

In addition to the prison sentence, Egeland was also ordered to pay the $90,011 he owes in back child support payments.

That wasn't even the first time Egeland had gotten in trouble while his original fraud case was active.

In December 2010, while on pre-trial release in the mortgage case, Egeland was accused of selling drugs near a school and then later lying about it while testifying during the trial, the Oregonian reports.

He was convicted of both perjury and delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, but the court of appeals overturned the drug conviction due to an incorrect jury instruction.

In June 2013 Egeland also pleaded guilty to theft or shoplifting from Fred Meyer.

Florida middle school teacher outed as white nationalist with podcast: report

A Florida school teacher has been accused of moonlighting as white nationalist podcaster, according to a report.

Dayanna Volitich, a social studies educator at Crystal River Middle School, bragged about teaching her ideology in the classroom — and getting away with it — during a recent episode of “Unapologetic,”HuffPost reportedSaturday.

“I’ve had a couple instances where parents were concerned,” Volitich said in the Feb. 26 episode, under the pseudonym Tiana Dalichov.

“One, at the beginning of the year, emailed the principal over my head. ‘I’m worried that your teacher, she’s injecting political bias,’ ” the 25-year-old recalled.

White supremacist propaganda flooded campuses in 2017

She said that the Crystal River principal, whose school is about 70 miles north of Tampa, confronted her about the parent’s concern and asked, “Should I be worried?”

teacher5n-7-web.jpg

The 25-year-old is believed to have started the podcast in January, while teaching at Crystal River Middle School.
(GOOGLE MAPS STREET VIEW)
“No,” Volitich replied. “She believed me and backed off.”

When reached by HuffPost, a Citrus County School District official was unable to confirm if Volitich was Dalichov but said that comments on the podcast would be investigated.

The report tied Dalichov to Volitich by comparing public records to personal details, such as photos, age, home and employment history, revealed on social media accounts. Those accounts associated with Dalichov went offline after HuffPost reached out to her for comment.

Italian elections carry echoes of Berlusconi — and Trump

Archives of the podcast on the website TuneIn show that Volitich kicked off the project in January and had recorded at least five episodes. She pitched the show as one that would be “fighting through the cultural jungle.”

teacher5n-6-web.jpg

In the podcast, Volitich, under the name Tiana Dalichov, claims to have been sharing white nationalist views in the classroom.
(CRYSTAL RIVER MIDDLE SCHOOL VIA FACEBOOK)
In the same episode where Volitich described peppering curriculum with white nationalism, she appeared to agree with a guest calling on far-right listeners to infiltrate academics as teachers.

“They don’t have to be vocal about their views, but get in there, be more covert and start taking over. That’s what the left did,” said Lana Lokteff, who has been described as one of the few, but very outspoken, women in the white nationalist movement.

“We have to take that institution back. Children are very important. Communists always knew that. They wanted the minds of children because that is the future,” Lokteff said. “If we could have more teachers in those positions, that would be great.”

Most Americans think President Trump is a racist: poll

Volitich then identified herself as doing what Lokteff suggested.

“I’m absolutely one of them,” Dalichov said.

Mesquite Police said they received a report of a possible inappropriate relationship between a teenage girl and Larry Winn, 65, of Dallas on February 27.

In an interview with police, the alleged victim said the incident happened approximately three years ago when she was 16 years old.

Two days later, Larry Winn was arrested and charged with one count of sexual assault of a child in Dallas County, with a bond of $25,000.

Winn is the Bus Director at the Open Door Baptist Church in Mesquite and the victim was a member of the church.

Due to Winn’s level of access to children, investigators believe there may be additional victims.

Investigators encourage anyone with information on criminal offenses involving Larry Winn to contact the Mesquite Police Department at 972-285-6336.

On the same day the allegations surfaced against Larry Winn, his son Steven Winn, 33, was arrested for sexual assault of a child.

Court papers show Steven Winn is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old while he was a volunteer assistant to the youth pastor at Open Door Baptist Church.

He is cahrged with six counts of sexual assault of a child – three in Dallas County and three in Kaufman County.

Pastor Bob Ross told CBS11 last week, Steve Winn was a “non-employee volunteer who was not paid for any of his duties” which mainly consisted of “driving buses or vans for our teenagers.”

Prosecutor: After boy, 8, shot sister, mom went back to work

Associated Press
March 6, 2018

ASHLAND, Ohio (AP) — An 8-year-old boy loaded a rifle, repeatedly shot his 4-year-old sister at home and then informed their mother, who left work to check the girl's injuries, cleaned up a bloody bed cover and returned to work, leaving the children alone again, a prosecutor said.

Alyssa Edwards, 27, is jailed on child endangerment charges related to the Saturday shooting in Hayesville, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) southwest of Cleveland.

Her attorney, Donald Wick, said Tuesday that he had just received the case and couldn't yet comment.

An arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday. Edwards tearfully appeared for court Monday via video and said that there was no information that a magistrate needed to consider before he set her bond at $30,000, The Ashland Times-Gazette reported .

Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell said Edwards was contacted about the shooting around 10 a.m. while working at a horse farm and returned to work about an hour later, not taking the girl to the hospital until hours after the shooting.

The 4-year-old girl was stable Monday at a children's hospital in Cleveland. Her injuries aren't considered life-threatening, Ashland County sheriff's Chief Deputy Carl Richert said. He had told WJW-TV the girl was shot at least once in the stomach area.

The boy was in the custody of children's services.

The rifle was kept in a gun locker with other firearms, and the boy knew how to open the locker if it was locked, Tunnell said.

Ohio Mom Allegedly Learned 8-Year-Old Son Had Shot 4-Year-Old Daughter — and Then Went Back to Work

Steve Helling
,
PeopleMarch 6, 2018
An Ohio woman whose unattended 8-year-old son allegedly shot her 4-year-old daughter multiple times while she was at work is accused of returning to work after the non-fatal shooting and again leaving the children unattended.

Alyssa Edwards, 27, was taken into custody after the Saturday shooting and charged with two counts of child endangerment, PEOPLE confirms. According to an arrest report, the family kept a rifle in a safe along with other firearms — but the boy allegedly knew how to unlock it. Authorities allege that the boy loaded the rifle and repeatedly shot his sister. He then allegedly called his mother.

According to prosecutors, Edwards left work to check on the girl’s injuries after receiving her son’s call. She dressed her daughter’s wounds and also cleaned a bloody bedcover. Then, they say, she returned to work and left the children alone again.

Edwards allegedly took the girl to the hospital later, after one of the wounds began to leak. Because hospitals are required by law to report suspected child abuse, they contacted authorities.
