I believe there is a segment of the non-college educated segment of society who inwardly resent the educated class because of their knowledge. So to compensate for this subconscious intellectual insecurity/inferiority, these wild conspiracy theorists placate themselves with the notion that it's really the experts that are misinformed. Since these folk never learned critical analysis, they don't know to properly dissect and/or test the data that they come across. That makes them susceptible to pseudo-intellectual theorizing that flashes a middle finger to the faces of scientists, historians, researchers and experts. It pumps up the wild conspiracy theorist's ego to have "found the "real story that 'they' don't want you to know." And if it is social media or YouTube or even Google where they glean their info, like someone already said, the algorithm will ride right along with them and mercilessly feed their confirmation bias. It makes them feel like somebody, like they are a vital link to a hidden fountain of knowledge.
