Seagram's Heiress Now Rumored to Be Leading Alleged Sex Cult Within Nxivm After Allison Mack's Arrest
Clare Bronfman is a “fanatical” follower of Keith Raniere, who was arrested along with Mack on sex trafficking charges.

1524509121288-bronfman-and-mack.jpeg

Now that Smallville actress Allison Mack has been arrested on sex trafficking and forced labor charges, the so-called sex cult she allegedly helped create has a new leader, former insiders say.

Heiress to Canadian liquor fortune Clare Bronfman is now in charge of an estimated dozen or more “slaves” spread between New York and Toronto, according to former Nxivm publicist Frank Parlato—though that could potentially change if Mack is granted bail this week.

The alleged sex cult is an offshoot of Nxivm, a pyramid-like self-help organization founded by Keith Raniere. Women recruited into the secret group were branded with Mack and Raniere’s initials and allegedly blackmailed into unwanted sex. Women were then required to recruit more “slaves” into the group, which at one point boasted more than 50 members.

Clare Bronfman has previously denied being part of the secret “sorority” also known as DOS, but has been a longtime follower of Raniere. Last week, VICE reported on more than a dozen lawsuits Clare and her sister Sara Bronfman have spearheaded against Nxivm adversaries, which former insiders say intimidated and silenced critics.

Parlato says Clare is among the most “ruthless” and “fanatical” Raniere devotees, who along with her sister has sunk more than $100 million into Nxivm ventures. Parlato told VICE she may now be plotting to discredit Nxivm critics, based on a number of domain names recently purchased by the organization.

“They bought up a number of domain names to attack some of the witnesses,” he said. “If Jane Doe 1 or 2 decided not to testify, that would certainly hurt the case against Raniere… I think she would do whatever it takes to see that those witnesses don’t testify.”

Raniere claims to have one of the highest IQ scores on Earth and requires students to call him “Vanguard” and bow to him. He was arrested in late March on sex trafficking and forced labor charges and was not granted bail.

According to a criminal complaint and US prosecutor statements this week, Mack helped “groom” women for sex with Raniere. Her “slaves” are required to hand over naked photos as “collateral” that they believed would be released if they spoke out about the group. The women are also kept on near-starvation diets and coerced into free labor at all hours of the night and day—a practice Parlato says has eased slightly in Raniere’s absence.

“What I hear from inside sources is some are sleeping like they’ve never slept before, some are cheating on their diets, while others are more fanatical than ever—just weeping and gnashing teeth because they’re worried about Raniere.

On her personal website, Clare Bronfman defended the secret group as a consensual expression of friendship. “I find no fault in a group of women (or men for that matter) freely taking a vow of loyalty and friendship with one another to feel safe while pushing back against the fears that have stifled their personal and professional growth,” she wrote in December. “It’s not for any of us to judge how they, or anyone else, choose to advance their lives and values.”

Mack will find out early this week whether or not she will be released on bail. US prosecutors have asked for “substantial secured bond” as well as house arrest and electronic monitoring “given the serious risk of flight and danger to the community that the defendant poses.”

Fraud committed by Raniere and Clare Bronfman
April 24, 2018
  • Sex-slavery in the NXIVM cult’s subgroup, DOS, is just the tip of iceberg of crimes committed by NXIVM, Seagram’s heiress Clare Bronfman and the cult’s minions.
  • Wire fraud, tax crimes, and multi-object schemes to defraud violations committed, according to sources.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn allege that Allison Mack was paid money and “other benefits” to recruit attractive women for NXIVM leader, Keith Raniere. The question now is, where did Raniere find funds to pay Mack?

The answer is Seagram’s heiress, Clare Bronfman.

Federal authorities allege that Bronfman is Raniere’s chief financial backer, spending millions on Raniere.

After publication of the New York Times October 17, 2017 story that brought widespread attention to the sex-cult, Raniere and Bronfman fled to Mexico, where Raniere was arrested last month.

Following Mack’s arrest last Friday, sources report Bronfman is now acting slave-master.

Bronfman and Raniere committed tax and scheme-to-defraud crimes
image-345-300x199.png

Sex-slaver, Keith Raniere
Authorities allege that despite Bronfman lavishing millions on him, Raniere claims to be a “renunciate.” According to ex-girlfriend, Barbara Bouchey, Raniere advised followers not to pay taxes.

Various members took that advice to heart as evidenced by their tax liens.

Raniere and Bronfman brought lawsuits and filed criminal complaints against Bouchey. They did not succeed against her but were able to cause her financial damages and personal stress.

Bouchey could provide leads for prosecutors interested in tax conspiracy crimes.

Bronfman’s funding may have been done with intent to help Raniere evade income taxes, and assist in widespread tax conspiracy.

image-349.png

Clare Bronfman, acting leader of the sex-cult.
Aside from potential tax violations, if Bronfman gave Raniere funds to pay Mack and others to recruit sex slaves, after obtaining coercive collateral, Bronfman should be added to the conspiracy to commit sex trafficking in the Raniere-Mack indictment.

It would stretch credulity to argue Bronfman was in the dark about DOS. Bronfman is a hands-on operator, and board member of Nxivm. She has known Raniere since 2002 and “invested” millions into him and the cult.

She flew away to Mexico with him shortly after mainstream media broke the news of the cult’s branding and other practices. The investigation will probably show prosecutors that Bronfman financed the sex-slavery in DOS.

image-346-300x169.png

Raniere (l) with Green Acres’ Eddie Albert, in a commercial for Raniere’s pyramid scheme, Consumer’s Buyline. Raniere’s penchant for using actors to legitimize schemes dates back to the 1990s.
Additionally, prosecutors are likely examining the NXIVM pyramid scheme for wire fraud and conspiracy violations, unrelated to DOS branding and slavery.

Raniere’s history of pyramid schemes dates back to the 1990s with Consumers’ Buyline -shut down by NY Attorney General – with Raniere paying a fine].

A consumer complaint with the NY State Department of Consumer Protection was filed last year, alleging NXIVM is a “cult preying on vulnerable women and men who are looking for a credible self help program.”

Complaints against NXIVM in recent years have been somewhat rare. Given that Bronfman uses her trust fund money to crush ex-slaves, cult defectors, Raniere’s ex girlfriends, and especially any critics, it is not surprising that few dare to openly complain.

To the extent the sales pitch of the cult promised value predicated on Raniere being the world’s smartest man, where prosecutors have discovered he graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a 2.26 GPA (failing or barely passing his upper level math and science courses), the federal prosecutors have already established the first element of deceit.

The steep costs of tuition for NXIVM classes and other benefits were one object of the Raniere/Bronfman scheme (aside from satisfying Raniere’s sexual proclivities and sadistic desires, such as directing a slave to run headfirst into a tree and another to drink from a puddle).

In making out the scheme to defraud, as to the necessary ‘intent to harm,’ it was part of the objective to obtain forced labor and sex from many women. Raniere and Bronfman accomplished this through steep fees that bankrupted members. Those members had to “work off” the debt, and stay within the cult’s good graces under two different and sometimes overlapping scenarios:

(1) they were brainwashed and addicted to their programmed cult lifestyle.

(2) they knew too much and feared leaving due to Bronfman’s willingness to bankroll attorneys and using the court system to sue ex-members into bankruptcy or prison.

The intent to harm was manifested by the desire of Raniere and Bronfman to obtain forced labor, sex, and reduce members to that state of dependence that made them susceptible to forced labor.

After having softened their brains through years of brainwashing, Raniere’s advice to members to ‘blow off taxes,’ and other ill-advised, illegal lifestyle choices, suggests a pattern of intending to harm those under his tutelage and command, as he knew that advice and mentorship was harmful when he gave it.

‘He who has the most joy wins’; a long pattern of scheming to defraud
image-347-300x294.png

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s father, Doug Rutnik, who was defrauded and accused of sexual harassment by the sex-slave cult.
One final aspect of Bronfman/Raniere fraudulent scheming, somewhat less talked about, is their pattern of engaging independent contractors and consultants then terminating under pretext, and demanding return of any money paid out, refusing to pay them what they owe, or suing them via a complex and expensive-to-defend lawsuits.

A case in point is that of U.S. Senator Kristin Gilllibrand’s father, Doug Rutnik. He was retained as a consultant and legal adviser by NXIVM in 2004, at the rate of $25,000 per month. He was hired to help them resolve an array of legal and political problems hampering NXIVM’s operations – or so he thought. One of those problems concerned a long-overdue payment Raniere owed to the New York State Attorney General arising from his closed-down Consumers’ Buyline operation.

Rutnik’s main contact person was Nancy Salzman (Salzman is the putative president of Executive Success Programs. Her house was raided by the FBI last month. While Raniere is known as “Vanguard,” she is known as “Prefect.”)

After four months, Rutnik quit, having been informed of possible illegal activities NXIVM and Raniere were involved in. But Raniere decreed that Rutnik could not quit. So, he directed the company to sue Rutnik and, as an additional threatening gesture, NXIVM reared false allegations of ‘sexual harassment’ against Rutnik claiming he had inappropriate behavior toward, of all people, Nancy Salzman.

The lie was despicable, but Rutnik had enough. He settled by returning every dollar paid to him – $100,000.

In short, Rutnik ended up receiving no payment for services he provided NXIVM. He was defrauded, and, in an irony of ironies, was accused of sexual harassment by a sex-slave cult.

image-350-300x200.png

Frank Parlato, Buffalo publisher and businessman was defrauded by Clare and Sara Bronfman and Raniere.
Then there is the case of Frank Parlato, who first broke the story of Raniere’s human branding practices. Parlato met the Bronfmans in 2007, and was initially engaged to do public relations work for NXIVM, to help rehabilitate their public image which became tainted after Forbes published an article in 2003 where the group was dubbed a “cult.”

Parlato states that, from what he saw on the surface, between Raniere, Bronfman, Salzman and others with whom he had contact, everything seemed legal.

“There was no inkling to me that it was a sinister cult that abused women and critics. They seemed a bit quirky, that’s all,” Parlato said.

After a few months in Albany working for Bronfmans, Parlato discovered that a Bronfman real estate venture had lost over $26 million in Los Angeles and the properties were not even in their names. Parlato advised the Bronfmans he could secure title to their properties. Parlato and his attorney proposed an advance of $1 million, and 1/3 of profits of the venture. Bronfman and Raniere agreed, the deal was struck, and Parlato recovered title to the properties for the Bronfmans.

Then, almost immediately after, in characteristic Bronfman/Raniere-fashion, with no apparently legitimate reason, they terminated Parlato, and demanded the $1 million advance be returned. Parlato refused and held the money in escrow pending resolution of the dispute.

The Bronfmans did not immediately sue Parlato, but decided to use him in the civil suit regarding the Los Angeles properties, with Bronfman testifying in open court that Parlato did them a lot of good, and that his $1 million advance, “compared to 26.43 [million Parlato recovered for Bronfmans] it was worth it to us.”

As soon as Bronfmans won the civil case against the Russian contractor, they pursued a civil and criminal complaint against Parlato, in 2011, securing an indictment against him in 2015, where the Western District of New York federal authorities alleged that, among other things, Parlato defrauded the Bronfmans.

While that case is ongoing and has not yet been dismissed – which is what happens with most Bronfman-caused criminal cases – court records suggest Clare Bronfman perjured herself to assist in the indictment, and that her attorney, William Savino, and infamous retired Assistant United States Attorney, Anthony M. Bruce, suborned perjury. Prosecutors in the Western District of New York are still pursuing the Bronfman-led criminal case against Parlato.

Bronfman/Raniere/NXIVM’s long history is replete with examples of defrauded victims, such as Bouchey who lost her life-savings on a loan to Raniere, who, rather than return the money, initiated years of lawsuits against her.

Allison Mack is a victim of the cult’s nefarious schemes – with Mack, once a wealthy and successful actress who become impoverished through debt to the cult, and reduced to working it off through pimping women, among other things.

Some have questioned why Bronfman, who has hundreds of millions at her disposal, would engage in lawsuits, spending millions in attorneys’ fees over the years over comparatively trifling sums. The answer may lie in the meaning of Raniere’s devious philosophy, that “he who has the most joy wins.”

Inside, ex-members report that suing and putting people in jail gives Raniere and Bronfman “ethical joy.”

Bronfman, as the beneficiary of a multi-million dollar trust, did not need the money that she has spent destroying Raniere’s enemies. Then again, her “investments” in Raniere and the cult over the years have not yielded any increase in income, but reportedly resulted in large losses (One former consultant and long-time critic has estimated that Clare and her sister, Sara Bronfman Igtet, have jointly spent more than $200-million in support of Raniere and his various schemes and lawsuits).

Sources say tax evasion is not her goal: it’s the thrill of scheming (what she and Raniere call “ethics“) and punishing people that bring her and Raniere “joy.”

Read what the Prosecution wrote in their motion opposing the release of Mack on Bail..

US v. Mack– the gov.’s argument against easy bail for Allison
April 23, 2018

Today the prosecution in the US v Allison Mack will make their argument before the judge seeking to prevent Mack being released on bail.

Here is their letter to the court:

The government respectfully submits this letter to set forth the government’s position with respect to bail in anticipation of the defendant Allison Mack’s arraignment on the above-captioned indictment. For the reasons set forth below, the government respectfully submits that Mack poses a risk of danger and risk of flight and should only be released
pursuant to a substantial, heavily secured bond, commensurate with Mack’s financial resources, signed by a number of financially responsible sureties unaffiliated with Nxivm, and subject to additional conditions of release including, among others, home detention with electronic monitoring.

BACKGROUND

On April 19, 2018, a grand jury sitting in this District returned an indictment
charging Keith Raniere and Allison Mack with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and conspiracy to commit forced labor. As described in the complaint filed against Keith Raniere on February 14, 2018 (18-M-132), in which Mack (hereinafter, the “defendant”) is referred to as “CC-1,” the defendant is alleged to have recruited and persuaded young women into joining a secret organization called “DOS” or the “Vow.” DOS is comprised of “masters” who recruit and command groups of “slaves.” The defendant recruited prospective DOS slaves to join DOS by describing it as a women’s empowerment group or sorority. The defendant had women provide her with “collateral,” which consisted of naked photographs, assets, criminal confessions and other damaging information, to prevent the women from leaving the group or disclosing its existence to others. Once they joined, DOS recruits were required to provide additional collateral, which they did, fearing that their original collateral would be released.

As set forth in the complaint, DOS slaves understood that their participation in DOS was a lifetime commitment and that if they disclosed their participation in DOS, left DOS, or failed to complete assignments given to them by their masters, their collateral could be released. DOS masters, including the defendant, benefited financially from recruiting and
maintaining DOS slaves. DOS slaves were often required to perform “acts of care” for their masters and to pay “tribute” to their masters, including by performing labor and other services for which the DOS slaves were not compensated. In addition, the defendant directed some DOS slaves (including Jane Doe 1) to have sex with Keith Raniere, whose participation
in DOS was not disclosed. DOS masters, including the defendant, groomed DOS slaves for sex with Raniere by requiring DOS slaves to adhere to extremely restrictive diets and not remove their pubic hair (in accordance with Raniere’s sexual preferences) and by requiring them to remain celibate and not to masturbate. DOS masters, including the defendant, who
directed their slaves to have sex with Raniere, received financial benefits in the form of continued status and participation in DOS, as well as financial opportunities from Raniere.

DOS masters, including the defendant, also demanded that DOS slaves
participate in “readiness” drills, which required them to respond to their masters any time of day or night, causing DOS slaves to be seriously sleep-deprived. DOS slaves were also branded in their pelvic regions with a cauterizing pen with a symbol that, unbeknownst to them, incorporated Raniere’s initials.

For the reasons set forth below, the government respectfully submits that,
given the serious risk of flight and danger to the community that the defendant poses, the defendant should be released only pursuant to a substantial secured bond signed by several financially responsible U.S.-based sureties who are unaffiliated with Nxivm. In addition, the
Court should order home confinement with electronic monitoring.

ARGUMENT

I. Legal Standard

Under the Bail Reform Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3141 et seq., federal courts are
empowered to order a defendant’s detention pending trial upon a determination that the defendant is either a danger to the community or a risk of flight. See 18 U.S.C. § 3142(e) (“no condition or combination of conditions would reasonably assure the appearance of the person as required and the safety of any other person and the community”). A finding of risk of flight must be supported by a preponderance of the evidence. See United States v. Jackson, 823 F.2d 4, 5 (2d Cir. 1987); United States v. Chimurenga, 760 F.2d 400, 405 (2d Case 1:18-cr-00204-NGG Document 17 Filed 04/20/18 Page 2 of 5 PageID #: 72 Cir. 1985).

By contrast, detention based on dangerousness must be supported by clear and convincing evidence. 18 U.S.C. § 3142(f).

The Bail Reform Act lists four factors to be considered in the detention
analysis: (1) the nature and circumstances of the crimes charged; (2) the history and characteristics of the defendant; (3) the seriousness of the danger posed by the defendant’s release; and (4) the evidence of the defendant’s guilt. See 18 U.S.C. § 3142(g). The rules governing admissibility of evidence at trial do not apply in a detention hearing. See 18 U.S.C. § 3142(f); Fed. R. Evid. 1101(d)(3). Accordingly, the government may proceed by proffer, United States v. Ferranti, 66 F.3d 540, 541-42 (2d Cir. 1995); see also United States v. LaFontaine, 210 F.3d 125, 130-31 (2d Cir. 2000); United States v. Martir, 782 F.2d 1141, 1145 (2d Cir. 1986).

The concept of “dangerousness” encompasses not only the effect of a
defendant’s release on the safety of identifiable individuals, such as victims and witnesses, but also “‘the danger that the defendant might engage in criminal activity to the detriment of the community.’” United States v. Millan, 4 F.3d 1038, 1048 (2d Cir. 1993) (quoting legislative history). In addition, when a finding of dangerousness is related to violent conduct, it need not be shown that the defendant personally engaged in violence. United States v. Colombo, 777 F.2d 96, 98 (2d Cir. 1985).

II. The Defendant Is a Risk of Flight and a Danger to the Community
A. Nature and Circumstances of the Crimes Charged.

The charges the defendant faces are extremely serious. The defendant is
charged with using force, fraud and coercion to recruit and maintain DOS slaves, and instructing those slaves to engage in sexual acts with Raniere, among other assignments. The defendant aggressively recruited DOS slaves and required those slaves to recruit slaves of their own. As alleged in the complaint charging her co-defendant, the defendant was focused
on recruiting attractive young women who could meet Raniere’s sexual preferences. The government’s evidence includes admissions by the defendant to witnesses reflecting the defendant’s understanding of the true purpose of DOS, including that DOS slaves would be instructed to have sex with Raniere.

The defendant’s slaves were kept seriously sleep-deprived and emaciated to the point where they stopped menstruating. During the ceremonies in which her slaves were branded, the defendant placed her hands on the slaves’ chests and told them to “feel the pain” and to “think of [their] master,” as the slaves cried with pain. The defendant also provided
naked photographs of her slaves to Raniere and was aware of Raniere’s proclivity for having sex with multiple young women.

Reflecting the seriousness of the charged offenses, the sex trafficking count set forth in Count One carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Such a heavy term of incarceration creates a substantial incentive to flee. The Second Circuit has held that the possibility of a severe sentence is an important factor in assessing flight risk. See United States v. Jackson, 823
F.2d 4, 7 (2d Cir. 1987); Martir, 782 F.2d at 1147 (defendants charged with serious offenses whose maximum combined terms created potent incentives to flee); United States v. Cisneros, 328 F.3d 610, 618 (10th Cir. 2003) (defendant was a flight risk because her knowledge of the seriousness of the charges against her gave her a strong incentive to
abscond); United States v. Townsend, 897 F.2d 989, 995 (9th Cir. 1990) (“Facing the much graver penalties possible under the present indictment, the defendants have an even greater incentive to consider flight.”); United States v. Dodge, 846 F. Supp. 181, 184-85 (D. Conn. 1994) (possibility of a “severe sentence” heightens the risk of flight).

B. History and Characteristics of the Defendant
The history and characteristics of the defendant also militate in favor of a
substantial bail package and restrictive pre-trial conditions. Given her status within DOS and her access to DOS slaves’ collateral, the defendant poses a particular threat because of her ability to direct others to carry out activities on her behalf. In light of the number of witnesses who are themselves members of DOS and have provided collateral and vows of
obedience to the defendant and other DOS masters, there is a significant and unique risk of witness intimidation and tampering which must be mitigated. Cf. 18 U.S.C. § 3142(f)(2)(B) (court may also order detention if there is “a serious risk that the [defendant] will . . . attempt to obstruct justice, or . . . to threaten, injure, or intimidate, a prospective witness or juror”).

The government has obtained evidence that after its investigation was reported in the press, high-ranking members of DOS undertook efforts to undermine potential witnesses, including by registering domain names such as [Witness Name]exposed.com, with the intention of publishing damaging information regarding those witnesses.

Although the defendant has in the past year rented an apartment in Brooklyn, her ties to the Eastern District of New York are limited, as her family lives in California. She has also traveled extensively within the past five years and has powerful contacts associated with Nxivm across the United States and abroad. For instance, the son of a former Mexican
president is the head of a Nxivm center in Mexico.
When Keith Raniere was apprehended in Mexico, the defendant had been living with him at a luxury villa which cost over $10,000 a week to rent. Other high-ranking members of Nxivm have access to vast financial resources, in the millions of dollars.

In the absence of a substantial bond with extensive conditions, the Court
would not have sufficient means to ensure that the defendant would not commit additional crimes during any period of release or that she would not otherwise violate bail conditions, such as by contacting her former coconspirators or other witnesses who could testify against her.

C. Evidence of the Defendant’s Guilt
Finally, the weight of the evidence against the defendant is strong. The
government’s evidence includes witness testimony that is corroborated by, among other evidence, electronic communications between the defendant and her co-conspirators and other documentary evidence and records. These electronic communications evidence the defendant’s involvement in DOS recruitment, her participation in conducting “readiness” drills and the assignment of tasks and penances, and other efforts aimed at the continued manipulation and coercion of DOS slaves. This factor, too, strongly favors detention in the absence of a significant bail package.

CONCLUSION

For the reasons set forth above, the government respectfully submits that the defendant should not be released unless and until she posts a substantial secured bond, as well as the signatures of several financially responsible sureties who are not affiliated with Nxivm. Further, any such release should be under the conditions of home confinement with
electronic monitoring, among other restrictions.

Part 1: The secret story of how Allison Mack became a sex slaver
April 10, 2018
Artvoice
allisonMackTN.jpg

In 2010, TV Actress Allison Mack was on top of the world. She was starring in the long running, hit TV series Smallville, had millions of fans, was making millions, was beautiful and had thousands of men who would be grateful for the chance to date her.

A few years earlier, her friend and costar Kristin Kreuk brought her into a ‘self-help’ group called NXIVM and her life changed. Her involvement with the mysterious group grew from day to day. Even to this day – despite the arrest of leader Keith Raniere and Allison’s arrest expected soon – she continues to be a stalwart devotee. Some fear she has been brainwashed. Deeply hypnotized. Unable to think for herself.

As Artvoice reported, Mack is leading the remaining followers – designated as her slaves – despite her master Raniere being behind bars awaiting arraignment on charges of sex trafficking.

In this first of a series on how the cult captured Mack, we trace the roots of her involvement with NXIVM and how she started her affair with Raniere, whose followers call him Vanguard.

***

Sometime in 2010 or thereabouts, Allison Mack left her computer open. There was an email on the screen. One of her friends saw it and was shocked: It was an email from Keith Raniere – leader of NXIVM – the sex-slaver, blackmail and branding cult – to Allison Mack.

It read in effect: ‘If you and I want to have sex, you have to make a vow to have sex only with me. I have been betrayed before and once we become close – as you want — and I give my all to you, I cannot risk your betrayal. You must give me some collateral.’

At the time, Allison was considering dating actor Mark Hildreth – who recently broke up with Kristin Kreuk. All three were in the cult. But Allison had set her eye on Raniere – the leader. She threw Mark overboard in a heartbeat and jumped at the chance to be with Raniere – the leader of the ‘self-help’ group that she felt had changed her life.

Allison asked Keith what he wanted. She saved money from her acting career and invested it. Her net worth was estimated to be around $8 million. Raniere told her he wanted her to pledge her financial assets as collateral to ensure she would never betray him.

Keith told her, “What does it mean if you are not willing to pledge these assets? If you are not going to betray me, you will never lose your homes, your Orange County office building, or any of your savings.”

The giddy actress bought this argument. Paperwork was prepared and she signed a pledge that she would never sleep with another man the rest of her life and, if she did, Keith Raniere could file the deeds on her properties in his name and take the money from her bank account.

The problem with the scenario is that while Allison could have sex only with Keith, he made it clear that he would be with other women whenever he chose. And with this pledge of collateral, began a new phase in the life of Allison Mack.

Part 2: How Allison Mack became a sex slaver…. she gave NXIVM cult leader graphic nude photos
April 10, 2018

The following report is based on more than a dozen interviews with former members of NXIVM and friends of Allison Mack who are dismayed at her continued involvement in the sex-slaver NXIVM cult.

In Part 1: The secret story of how Allison Mack became a sex slaver, Artvoice revealed that Mack – desiring an intimate relationship with cult guru Keith Raniere – pledged her financial assets to ensure she would never have sex with another man.

Raniere took control of her life. He advised her to quit acting and she did. He placed her on a low calorie diet, explaining that she must not eat more than 800 calories per day. Raniere likes women rail-thin. He told her that little sleep, a low-cal diet, and sex with him would transform her into an enlightened being. (This Mutherfucker was ridiculous)

He told her one thing more: [as he taught other women] that he was healing her of ‘disintegrations’ though sex. It was not important if she had an orgasm. It was important for her that he had an orgasm. If he ejaculated on her, he taught, she would be his slave forever and saved from all future rebirths. Allison bought it hook, line and sinker.

He further told her that he could die if she had sex with another man. Not that he was jealous. He restricted her for her own sake. He was ready to die for her and others, but his mission to save the world was not complete, he said.

“What does it mean, if you’re sex desire is so strong that you would sacrifice the well being of the world?” he asked her and other women. Allison had tears in her eyes.

Raniere said Allison needed more collateral. He wanted her to advance in the harem. He said there might be important work. She was thrilled. But there were no more assets to pledge to him. And because she was no longer working as an actress, but doing Raniere’s work full time for his mission, she was spending money fast.

“What else can I give,” she asked.

Nude pictures and videos. “If you want to continue our relationship, they must be graphic,” Raniere said. “Even if I had your money, you could go and earn again as an actress. I need pictures that I could release that will destroy your public image. If you don’t want to, I understand. But remember I have taken on your sins. If you betray me, I would die. If I die, the world will go into darkness for 10,000 years.”

Allison Mack – as the Feds may have already discovered following their raid on Raniere’s townhouse – gave him pornographic photos, with her legs spread and her face in the photos.

But that wasn’t enough. In a few more months, Raniere wanted more collateral. How many graphic nudes of Allison Mack did he need? He had plenty. He wanted something else:

“Everybody has done something to be ashamed of,” he told her. “Confess on video something damning, something shocking. Something that could destroy your future, embarrass you everywhere – make it impossible for you to restart your career. Collateral that would make people hate Allison Mack, if I released it.”

Allison was confused. “What if I never did anything wicked?,” she said.

“Make something up. Say you did something: Molest a child. Embezzlement. Fraud. Put it on video. If you say you will never betray me, what does it mean, if you won’t do what I need? What does it mean if you won’t make every effort to be taught by me?”

Allison gave him the collateral. She confessed to deeds she never committed. She moved to Albany to be near him. Then, like all his women, she started waiting for him to call and come when he commanded. Sometimes, he would not show up for days. Allison would look out the window of her home waiting for him to pass by. Sometimes she would frantically ask other women if they had seen him. And when he finally came to see her, her life was complete and she was ecstatic.

Raniere was pleased with Mack. He understood her value to him. He knew she could – more than any other woman in the cult – find young, slender and attractive women. He put Allison on a 800 calorie per day diet. He told he she must awaken at any time at night he texted her and never again sleep a full eight hours as she was prone to do before he deigned to teach her. She soon became sleep deprived and struggled to stick to her low calorie, meatless diet. She was losing weight. She developed bulimia. She would eat too much then rush to the toilet to vomit. She started carrying around pre-measured meals. She started chewing sugarless gum to fight off cravings of not having enough food. She was constantly chewing gum. Raniere then required her to jog at least 30 miles per week – while remaining on the low cal diet.

Raniere liked the idea of collateral, and decided it could work to teach women on a much larger scale. He ordered Allison to find other women. Then one day, Raniere and Allison instituted their plan: They added collars, a hierarchy, where slaves recruit other slaves, and pubic branding. They called it DOS. It began with Keith Raniere saying he needed assurance that Allison Mack would not have sex with another man.

I Was Recruited by Allison Mack’s Sex Cult

I consider myself a slightly skeptical person, but I’ll also try most anything once, and I’m always willing to listen to someone who’s benefited from something. Which is how I ended up being recruited by NXIVM — the organization that’s recently been accused of sex trafficking and forced branding, and resulted in the arrests of founder Keith Raniere and Smallville actress Allison Mack, among others.

I was recruited by a friend; at first, I thought all the people he introduced me to were fairly interesting, and certainly smart. It wasn’t until I read those headlines that I thought, “Holy shit. Perhaps that party was sketchy.”

So how does one actually get recruited by a now-infamous sex cult? For me, it began with a professional development workshop a former job of mine paid for, aimed at “optimizing our potential.” This group had no affiliation with NXIVM, but it opened a gateway into a community of self-improvement aficionados. I went for a pretty standard reason: the free wine and cured meats. But the workshop itself delved deep into our egos, sense of empathy, and mental and behavioral patterns. I even tried a turmeric-oat muffin. This was the stuff of real growth!

After the workshop, a smaller group of us who’d hit it off got in touch and decided to form a book club. This lasted for over two years, and it consisted of people of different ages, races, careers, and nationalities. As it goes, half the time people forgot to read the book. But that didn’t matter. Usually, the conversation just veered off to other topics — from new jobs to painfully atrophying careers, from promising flings to refusing-to-die zombie loves, we became good friends outside of the norms of our everyday lives.

So when I got an email from one member of the group — we’ll call him Michael — about a gathering at his house to introduce us to another personal-growth program, I didn’t think twice about accepting. Michael is incredibly successful with an Important Job™, wildly kind and intelligent, and his apartment is so nice my jaw unhinges from my skull every time I step into it (he has bookshelves with a sliding ladder). My point is, he’s got his shit together more than almost anyone I know. And I’d come to consider him a good friend.

Allison Mack, Another SmallvilleActress, Has Been Arrested for Role in Sex Cult
When I arrived, there were about 10 to 15 people clustered in little groups around the fine pottery and photographs Michael had snapped of himself from places around the world. There were a few people from the book club, but most I didn’t know. As I made the rounds of small talk, I learned everyone else was as accomplished as Michael. So I did what one always does at a party where you’re kind of a schlub and everyone else is impressive: I ate stacks upon stacks of salami. By the time we gathered for a presentation, my brain was filled with at least two Riojas and my fingerprints laced with congealed brie. Meaning, I was amenable to most anything.

Michael briefly recapped his experience with Executive Success Programs (ESP) — the flagship series of workshops and community meetings that NXIVM operates, though it apparently offers other seminars, workshops, and pyramid scheme-y things, too. When finished, he introduced Matt, a representative from ESP. Matt began fulsomely.

“What if I told you you could get exactly what you want in life?” He took a beat and surveyed the room. “Our patented technology is designed to help you reveal your full potential — and utilize it.”

Despite the overtures, Matt came across as pragmatic and down to earth. And most of all, he obviously believed in his pitch. I found it endearing.

He shared individual stories of those who’d benefited from the program — most notably, how one of his siblings had cured his speech disorder through ESP, all thanks to Keith Raniere’s technology. He even preemptively addressed criticisms.

“Some people think we’re a pyramid scheme, some people think we’re a cult. But we’re really none of those things. We’ve got CEOs, entrepreneurs, politicians …” and he named some fairly high-profile people that I won’t mention here, because, y’know, sex-trafficking affiliations. (Because he’d mentioned cults, I went home and went way deep into ESP Googleland afterward. There were freaky rumors bubbling up, but nothing like what’s now come to light.)

I immediately noticed how important pedigree seemed to be to this crew. Over and over, they named Harvard Business School and Wharton, Deloitte and McKinsey, Broadway and Hollywood. It put a sour taste in my mouth. But then again, I’d just dunked cornichons into a tangy mustard. So I remained an attentive listener.

That is, until it dawned on me that I’d been there for 45 minutes, and still had zero clue as to what the fuck ESP actually was. When Matt dropped the price point — something like $3,000 for a five-day intensive program or $7,500 for 16 days — the Gouda nearly came back up.

“I’m sorry if I missed this, but can you explain more about what the technology is?” I asked.

“We can’t go into specifics, because our technology is proprietary. Instead, we want to focus on what you’ll gain,” Matt answered.

Sure. But proprietary shmoprietary when we’re talking over $3K. Also, the term “technology” seemed to skew more toward “Sporcle personality quiz” and less toward “code” or “software” or “any actual technology.” When the presentation ended, Matt asked us to come to him and sign up if we were ready.

At that point, two other reps who had been sitting among us made a beeline to those of us who were having any hesitations. A rep cornered me and started interrogating me.

“Look, if it was free, I’d definitely go,” I admitted. “But I just don’t have that kind of money right now.”

“You’re just like me. I totally get it,” he said. “My advice is that you just need to take a leap and invest in yourself. There’s nothing more important.”

This went on back and forth for awhile, until he said, “You know, my sister was really struggling. She has two kids, single mom, woman of color trying to make it out of debt. But she sold her car to take ESP because she valued her own potential. And now she’s getting promotions, and hasn’t looked back.”

It was at this point that some real alarm bells broke through the wine-and-cheese fog. What kind of program would advise someone really struggling with debt to spend thousands on a professional development workshop?

I’m not sure if anyone at the party signed up. I told the reps I’d think about it, and hung around to continue my gluttony until only Michael, the book club friend, and the ESP reps remained. It was then that everyone kind of dropped their hard sells, and we began getting to know each other better. We somehow began talking about Britney Spears and I went on to break down why I believe she is the goddess of our times.

One rep suddenly slammed down her glass with glee and said, “Remember when you asked what ESP does? This. It makes you talk about all aspects of your life the way you’re talking about Britney right now.” They all screamed yes!, and I laughed and felt my cheeks glow pink, and we poured yet another round.

It hit a nerve. It made me feel eager, like there was something more for me, and also some kind of sorrow. What would it be like to boast about all facets of my life — my work, my love life, my projects, my new Spanx — with a such a fire and tenacity that it leaves rooms stunned? I thought about it for weeks. But I never could take the plunge, all praises be to my English-major bank account.

The day I read the New York Times story about the forced branding, I felt my guts seize up in total horror — and I thought of how Michael and those reps must have felt when uncovering the same words. I can’t say for sure that none of them knew. It would shock me to learn they had, but also, what can you really know?

Allison Mack’s Sex Cult, NXIVM, Is Getting a Documentary
I’ve seen Michael several times since, but I can’t broach the subject. To even skirt near the shame and indignity is too much. What I believe is that these smart, complex people were evangelizing a system from the lower rungs, and it coiled up into something unimaginably ghastly at the epicenter. And I believe it was a mindfuck to discover that they had helped propel such abhorrence.

Though these people did, you know, try to recruit me into a pyramid-scheme-y cult, I fear for the stigma they may face as the truth continues to unfurl. As a society, we tend to commend all the qualities these groups claim to offer — purpose, fulfillment, community — but we then demonize huge swaths of people for having chosen unwisely. My point is not to absolve cults, but to honestly face a painful duality: While cults can be evil, the people within them are human. No one is immune from being swindled. There’s usually a cozy setting and lovely little party to kick things off.

What I learned from my brief, almost foray into sex-culting: Cults aren’t exclusivelymade up of freaks or damaged, desperate people (though they may leave that way). They consist of relatively normal individuals — and it’s for this reason that they’re so frightening.

Seagram's heiress nabbed in NXIVM sex cult arrests; 'Smallville' star Allison Mack faces more charges

A multimillionaire liquor heiress was among four people arrested Tuesday on charges ranging from sex trafficking to extortion, in connection with the reported NXIVM sex slave cult that “Smallville” actress Allison Mack allegedly helped run.

Clare Bronfman, Kathy Russell, Lauren Salzman and Nancy Salzman were arrested on a superseding indictment charging them with racketeering conspiracy, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

The indictment also charges Mack and the alleged cult leader, Keith Raniere.

Bronfman, who is the heiress to the Seagram’s liquor fortune, will be arraigned in Brooklyn Federal Court Tuesday. She is allegedly one of NXIVM’s chief financial backers. Russell and the Salzmans will be arraigned afterwards in Albany. Nancy Salzman allegedly co-ran the NXIVM organization alongside Raniere.

The indictment, obtained by Fox News, alleges the group made up Raniere’s “inner circle” and helped him with various illicit activities such as conspiracy to commit crimes like identity theft, harboring of aliens for financial gain, extortion, forced labor, sex trafficking, money laundering, wire fraud and obstruction of justice.

According to the legal documents, members of Raniere's inner circle held high positions within the cult and had power in its "Pyramid Organizations," having served on the executive board of NXIVM. Because the group's activities were illegal and meant to defraud, the documents say they formed an organized crime "enterprise."

"The principal purpose of the Enterprise was to obtain financial and personal benefits for the members of the Enterprise by promoting the defendant Keith Raniere, also known as 'Vanguard,' and by recruiting new members into the Pyramid Organization," the indictment reads. "By promoting Raniere and recruiting others into the Pyramid Organizations, the members of the Enterprise expected to recieve financial opportunities and increased power and status within the Enterprise."

As previously reported, Allison Mack worked alongside Raniere and the four listed on the new indictment to recruit women as sex slaves under the guise of a women’s self-help organization. Members were allegedly branded with the organization's symbol and extorted with sensitive content including nude photos that they were asked to surrender to the organization as a kind of commitment.

Both Mack and Raniere were previously arrested for their involvement with NXIVM.

A Running List of the Women Allison Mack Attempted to Recruit to Nxivm
On Thursday, actress Samia Shoaib told Megyn Kelly about her contact with Mack in 2013.

Allison-Mack-Attempted-Recruits.jpg

Pause your Wild Wild Country bingeing and look at the news, where so-called cult Nxivm has been making headlines for a week. Smallvilleactress Allison Mack was released on a $5 million bond on Tuesday after being indicted on sex-trafficking charges on Friday.

Since her arrest, stories have broken that Mack may have tried to recruit women including Emma Watson, Kelly Clarkson, and several feminist writers into a group that she referred to on Twitter as a “human development and women’s movement.” The group, however, was allegedly Nxivm, the upstate New York alleged sex cult run by a man named Keith Raniere, also known as “The Vanguard.”

Mack is denying the charges, and per Today, has issued a statement via a representative saying she has no comment at this time. Raniere was arrested in Mexico last month and has been charged with multiple accounts of sex trafficking and forced labor.

“As alleged, Keith Raniere displayed a disgusting abuse of power in his efforts to denigrate and manipulate women he considered his sex slaves,” F.B.I.’s New York Field Office Assistant Director in Charge William F. Sweeney Jr. said, per ABC News, at the time of Raniere’s arrest. “He allegedly participated in horrifying acts of branding and burning them, with the cooperation of other women operating within this unorthodox pyramid scheme. These serious crimes against humanity are not only shocking, but disconcerting to say the least, and we are putting an end to this torture today.”

Below, a likely incomplete list of the women Mack tried to recruit.

Emma Watson

As Vanity Fair wrote on Tuesday, Mack tweeted to Watson in early 2016 to try to recruit her to her group, saying that she thought Watson would be interested in “a unique human development & women’s movement.” She never replied.

Kelly Clarkson

Mack had tried this tactic before. In July 2013, she tweeted at Clarkson, saying that she knew the singer was a fan of Smallville. Clarkson never responded.
Samia Shoaib

The actress, who has appeared in The Sixth Sense and Requiem for a Dream, told Megyn Kelly on Thursday about her experience of Mack trying to recruit her into her “women’s group.” Kelly reported that the two actresses met at an audition in 2013, and Mack began to write to Shoaib, encouraging her to connect with Mack’s friend, who ran what she called a “school for introspection.”

In an interview with Kelly on Thursday, Shoaib said that Mack “love-bombed” her in an e-mail. She said that Mack would mirror everything she had to say in her exchanges, making it look as if she was interested in what she had to say. “We got close very quickly, and looking back, it was a very contrived effort, but at the time she seemed so sincere.”

She added that Mack told her that she “lived upstate in a communal situation” but didn’t add much more detail. She also said that Mack tried to help her with her drinking problem by offering for her to meet with a counselor, an alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous.

Shoaib also said that Mack met with her for dinner on one occasion and brought with her a woman that she says could have been India Oxenberg, granddaughter of Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, who is reportedly Mack’s personal sex slave. After some time, their contact broke off.

Shoaib said that she has “no doubt” that Mack was trying to recruit her, though she never explicitly tried to do so. “I’m very supportive of young feminists; I was very heartened that this woman was looking to do something positive, so it was exactly the right button to push with me. I’m sort of angry that she used feminism for such nefarious ends.”

Beverley Mitchell

On Friday, Mitchell spoke with actress Christine Lakin on her podcast, The Worst Ever Podcast, and told the host that Mack contacted her to recruit her to a “self-help group.” She said Mack tried to get her to attend a seminar, which Mitchell understood to be an empowerment seminar for women. Mitchell said she told Mack it was not for her but she “gifted” the seminar to her friends, who did not attend.“First of all, I thought it was like an empowerment of women; I thought it was for someone who needed a confidence boost,” she said.

Amanda Hess

It looks like Mack wasn’t just reaching out to Hollywood or Hollywood-adjacent folks. She also reached out to women, particularly women writers, known for their feminist work. On Monday, Hess, The New York Times critic at large, retweeted a tweet that Mack sent her in September 2013. In the tweet, Mack asked Hess to “chat sometime.”

She also apparently got an e-mail from Mack, who was trying to reach someone named Claire.

Jill Filipovic

Mack also reached out to writer Jill Filipovic, who, in a tweet, shared a screenshot of a February 2014 e-mail with the subject “Twitter lovin’.” In it, Mack asked Filipovic to meet with her about “a truly groundbreaking workshop” and linked to JNess, which is the women’s group that Mack reportedly used to mask her involvement with Nxivm.

Jennifer Pastiloff

In what has become a very close circle of writers targeted by Mack, Pastiloff, a self-help writer and public speaker, tweeted to tell Filipovic to tell her she had received a similar e-mail. In a flattering e-mail, Mack called her women’s group “the most effective thing she has ever come across” and asked Pastiloff to come to a workshop. She signed the letter “sleep well.” Pastiloff did not say whether she responded.

Katie Baker

Baker, a Buzzfeed reporter, also tweeted that Mack tweeted to her in 2014 about “an awesome educational model” and tried to recruit her. She suggested meeting Baker for a “virtual coffee date.” Baker ignored it. In a tweet to Hess, Baker said that Mack addressed her as “Ingrid” when she first reached out. Baker did not respond.

Noor Tagouri

Writer and activist Tagouri tweeted an entire thread about how Mack reached out to her “years ago” when she was in college. She, like Shoaib, seemed to have more contact with Mack than many of the other women she reached out to. Tagouri said that the two connected on Twitter and “would talk on Skype.” She said she was unsettled by the fact that the women’s group of which Mack spoke was led by Raniere, a man. She was going to meet Mack in New York but said she decided against it.
