Was watching Season 4 again, and I still cant figure out why Slim Charles told Bodie about Marlo killing Lil Kevin. It's almost like he was trying to stir shit up.

To me he did that earlier in the season when Bodie was complaining about having to take Marlo's package, and how he didn't have no muscle. But towards the end of the season after lil kevin gets killed he's asking like......You still cool with Marlo after what he did to your boy? It's like he was almost trying to instigate. Maybe I'm just reading into it too much.

basically just trying to warn him not to get out of line because Marlo was a new age nigga. you have to remember stringer and avon were old school dealers and had a little more "respect" for the street game. Marlo was one of them new cats that wanted everything his way and said fuck the rules.

Two lines, season 2 and season 5 show a great difference of mentality the suppliers have vs the street.

At one point Vondas says 'my name is not my name' - all they care about is making money.

While locked up Marlo says 'my name is my name' - to him, and a guy like avon their rep is worth as much as the money they make.

Excellent point...

I would say tho for street level cats on the front lines it IS more important to have a name ... and foolish for a supplier like the greek to have a reputation as his money is probably getting laundered and he is trying to become more legit

nonetheless excellent point

havent seen s4 in a while but could it have been a little "nigga i told you so" in there?

i remember when slim tried to give bodie some advice about marlo when bodie was complaining about having no muscle early on in that season (correct me if im wrong) and bodie walked off mid sentence...

What will forever eat at Marlo is that Omar called him out and everyone in tha streets knew
except him which made him look like some type of bitch especially since Omar was all fucked up after jumping out that window and still having tha balls to challenge him.Now that tha boogey man Omar is dead tha kill belongs to Kinard some lil hopper no one even knew except tha other hoppers around him, when Marlo tha tough guy who ain't afraid of shit couldn't even handle his own business.

Nah. He was legit asking if Bodie was good with Marlo cuz he thought Bodie might be next since Big Kevin was his right hand.

Their product is what made them who they are. On the streets, fear and rep might make a difference. When you're in the rarefied air of The Greek, you strive for anonymity and to develop a few sect connects to ensure your product gets to market. Everything else will take care of itself. It's about money period. At THAT level.

.02

"You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son."

From the movie "L4YER CAKE".

The only people The Greek was concerned with knowing his name were the people he answered to. People like Marlo & Prop Joe were gears in his money machine. And just like any gear in any machine, when it breaks, you replace it with another and keep the machine running.

I always wonder if the wire went on for another two seasons what direction they would of show gone in.
Immigration-type shit was DEFINITELY Season 6's focus.

And Season 7 probably would've been the international shit.

Me personally, I would've liked for it to talk about the prison industrial complex.

That article says Avon was copied from someone else not the dude named Avon who was on that hood documentary that someone posted a few months back.

That Avon was little more than a namesake. They shared some other similarities, but he wasn't the main person on which the Wire's Avon was based. The Wire's Avon was primarily based on the guy who plays the deacon.

True. I didn't like how Omar went out, but I can respect it. It was more normal. On every movie I have ever watched it seemed that the bad ass character was killed by a somebody. Why can't he just get killed? The Wire just killed him. I take that back. I like how they did it. As long as he lived, though, I know I wasn't the only one that thought he was gonna make it thru the end of the show.

But when Marlo killed Butchie I was thinking like when Jay-Z talked about when Tony killed Manolo. That was fucked up.

It was actually pretty realistic that a relative nobody killed Omar. Especially since Omar didn't take kids serious. Under estimated them in both Season 4 and 5. Plus, growin up in North Philly, there were always these tough guys that everyone thought was invincible. They'd always wind up getting hit up by some no name dude from some rag tag corner. Never failed.

correct
slim is with the old school and still had the code
bodie was banging with his old set and he had no ill will towards bodie. slim was asking a legit question, giving him warning and checking on his homie at the same time

thats the way the game goes
when youre a star youre not only targeted by the big guys youre targeted by the small fish too. you ignore the small fish and watch out for the big ones forgetting that the small fish bite too..

Broke niggaz want no cash, they just wanna kill ya

I know too many White cats that just can't get into the wire. Why is that? I watched the wire earlier this year and I found the smartest hood criminals in the history of TV. TV/movies have always portrayed Black criminals as having no order or organization, bumbling fuck ups. This series here had smooth criminals.

When Herc went to the White hoods in season two he said he never realized it, but these white dudes were sloppy compared to the Black criminals.

gotta understand we love it because its real true to our lives
they love it because its fascinating and compelling television.

that's why the wire is greatness. you have to watch it whether you've been through it or not and you're drawn into the characters whether you've lived a chartered life or one of struggle.
case in point

the news week part pertains to the wire specifically but the whole thing rings true

I am rewatching the wire and in the 3rd episode the FBI dude comes to McNulty and says that Daniels is dirty. I cannot remember what he did and if he actually WAS dirty. What'd he do?

He was on the take back in the day.

He was on the take from who for what? Was it on some Serpico "Take the money so we know you are one of us and won't turn us in" kind of thing, or was it on some "look the other way while we steal this shit and here's a little something to pay for the cotton in your ears"?

It was probably like how Herc and Carver did it.

I think it was when they were running up in Nick Sabotka's house in Season 2 and they found the money under a mattress and they stuffed a couple stacks into there vests.

And I think thats why Daniels was real strict on Herc and Carver when they lost that money in the trunk of the car when they seized that garbage bag full of money from Clay Davis's driver (Ashy Larry) because that's what he used to do. He probably did it a lot and his department figured out that he had way more cash than he was supposed to.

Makes sense. Thanks. I love this board.

It would've been a cycle. One of the themes of the show was the more things change the more they stay the same. There would've been a new Avon and Stringer (possibly one of them would've been Randy), there would've been a new Omar (Michael), it would've been the same thing but with different characters.

Bullshit homey. Just because you're a Black American doesn't mean you live the life of whats on the Wire. You need to open your eyes and know that everyone Black doesn't come from the inner city hood. Folks like the show because its a dam good show.

That shit would've been dope if they had Randy and Mike go their own individual paths and then become enemies or partners in the game.

Did anybody else notice that in season 2 lt. Daniels' wife kicks him to the curb because he lost his ambition then in season 3 she needs him to help her run for city council? He ends up moving up anyway and the white lawyer is there playing cheerleader all the way after the black chick dumbed his ass?
