Broncos lose starting DE Vance Walker to ACL tear

The Denver Broncos have lost a starter on the league's top-ranked defense.

Veteran defensive end Vance Walker will likely miss the entire 2016 season after tearing his right ACL in Monday morning's practice, the team announced.

Walker was expected to nail down a starting role as the replacement for 2015 breakout star Malik Jackson, who signed a mega contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March.

"We think the world of Vance and he was having a great camp," coach Gary Kubiak said, via the team's official website. "We'll support him through his recovery, and he'll come back stronger than ever."

With Walker out of the picture, the Broncos will turn to formerTexans defensive end Jared Crick, former Colts veteran Billy Winn and second-round draft pickAdam Gotsis alongside Sylvester Williams and Derek Wolfe on the defensive line.

Of the three options, Gotsis offers the highest ceiling. Fully healthy after tearing his ACL last Halloween, the former Georgia Tech star picked up a pair of quarterback hurries in the preseason opener.

Credit general manager John Elway with compiling enough quality depth to withstand the loss of several key cogs on a dominant defense that carried the Broncos to Super Bowl 50.

This offense is an eyesore. My goodness.:smh:

We are not the 2000 Ravens. There is no way we go to the Superbowl with JUST a DEFENSE. Not with New England making everybody their lunch. Playing like this and we will struggle against the Browns offensively. We are not ready for our two biggest games following the bye(GB and NE). I'm so upset. 5-0 doesn't mean shit right now and i'm sure the Broncos players would agree.
This should've been a blowout. Four field goals in the first half. That's 28 points wasted because we can"t get out of our own way in the redzone.

Any of the oline hurt?

It look like Siemian is the starting quarterback.

The defense is in midseason form already

And Booker looks like,he will be a beast for us.

Yes Booker is beastly. Simien got the job so now it's time to release Butt Fumble and get that pick back.

Oh and it's funny you quoted me because we did go to the Superbowl with just a defense lol

defense look better than it did last year, from what I've been seeing,so far

If,they somehow keep Sanchez it will be only for having a veteran on the team.

And,I think things will never change for DT,he never fights for the extra yards....

The offense played better than the defense....to me

Hopefully, the defense get back to form, but Siemian needs to cut down the turnovers though

The thing that surprised me was how well the offensive line block...I can't believe we might have a running game finally.

Overall, good game, but both side need to clean up.

Where was Demaryius at though :hmm:

Roger Goodell: Discipline coming for Broncos after officials “missed at least one” illegal hit on Cam Newton

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged Monday that the game officials “missed at least one” illegal hit on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton by Denver Broncos defenders during the league’s season-opening game Thursday. But Goodell suggested that will be addressed by disciplinary action by the league.

Goodell seemed to single out a helmet-to-helmet hit by Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall on Newton.

“That’s what the football staff is going through now, to find out what plays – clearly I know we missed at least one in there,” Goodell said at FedEx Field prior to the Washington Redskins’ game Monday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. “But you’re also concerned about the fact they even happen, even if you don’t miss them from an officiating standpoint. What is it we can do to try to ensure that those hits don’t occur?

“That’s why we have a process. Obviously hopefully they’re flagged on the field. And then if not, discipline can occur. Jon Runyan is in charge of that aspect of it. So he’s reviewing that and I assume he’ll come out with a decision in the next day or so.”

The NFL hired Runyan in May as its chief disciplinary officer for on-field infractions. He could fine or suspend Marshall and other Broncos players for Thursday night’s hits on Newton even if those hits were not penalized during the game.

Marshall left his feet to deliver a helmet-to-helmet hit on Newton that was not penalized. Goodell made reference to that play while saying he does not believe that missed calls for illegal hits should be made subject to instant replay review.

“The [competition] committee and the membership [owners] have discussed that a lot,” Goodell said. “And they really did not feel that they wanted to go there. We had a discussion again this spring about that, and they just didn’t want to expand replay into that area. I don’t think that’s the answer necessarily. Sometimes it’s a tough call.

“The one call that I’m aware of that they missed when he was moving back to the offensive line, back to the line of scrimmage, and he pulled back up and went to [being] a passer. He gets that passer protection when he’s in the passing mode. But the defender used a technique that we’ve been trying to get out of the game, frankly. He left his feet and went to the head. It’s ultimately all about the technique that’s used, that’s coached. And we want to make sure it’s not.”

The Broncos’ Von Miller and Darian Stewart also delivered helmet-to-helmet hits to Newton. Stewart’s hit was penalized while Miller’s, which came as he was being blocked by a Carolina offensive lineman, was not.

The NFL and NFL Players Association are investigating whether the sport’s concussion-testing procedures were followed properly with Newton during the game. Newton said he did not answer any concussion-related questions until after the game.

Goodell said he believes the decision not to evaluate Newton during the game was made by the medical experts on hand without competitive considerations coming into play.

“Obviously the concern is for the player first and making sure that the appropriate medical people make those decisions and whether they make a determination,” Goodell said. “And that’s why the first aspect of it is: Are the medical personnel aware of it? They were aware of it. They also saw it on video and they were monitoring it very closely from the trainers to the doctors. . . . So that aspect is important. The medical timeout, which has been the discussion – there was no issue with that because ultimately the medical personnel were well aware of it and were watching it and were very closely monitoring it. So it’s something we take seriously. It’s something we’ll look at. We have been looking at it. We’ve been looking at the video. We’re talking to the personnel involved.

“We formally have started the process with the union [Sunday]. And they were having meetings today on that. We’ll go through the formal process of that and come to a conclusion. It’s very important to us to see, one, did we follow the protocol correctly? Second: If not, we’ll deal with that within the formal context of the program. And then, finally: What can we learn from it? There’s a responsibility on all of us to get better. It’s a relatively new policy. We want to make sure that we’re [finding] the best way to do this and to make changes as necessary, if necessary. Undoubtedly there will be policy changes to it eventually. I don’t know whether it’s related to this one. We’ll see.”

Goodell pointed out that Newton did not have concussion symptoms.

“There’s concern obviously about the player first, his condition,” Goodell said. “And the good news is he’s never shown any symptoms. And he still doesn’t. So that’s good news on that one. Second, from almost the time I became commissioner, I made the point of saying that medical issues always override competitive issues. And I believe our football personnel fully understand that. They don’t interfere. They allow the medical personnel to do their job. But these are issues that the process and the evaluation – the focus is to allow the medical personnel to make those decisions, not commissioners or reporters or anybody else. Medical personnel need to do that.”

I hope all the talk about a quarterback controversy ends....No way,we lose this game,if Siemian was the starter.

Don't get me wrong,Lynch shows some promise, but he's not ready....He holds onto the ball way too long and needs to learn to throw the ball way.

With that said,Sambrailo needs to go,he's been getting on my nerves, since that game against the Raiders last year :smh:

Yeah, QBs suck,
so we gotta lean towards the backs...
Booker gotta hold on to the rock tho

I think Siemian will play better this week..I do want to see Booker get more reps though, because he looked good last week against the Chargers.

You're right though,he need to hold on to the ball.

D. Thomas and E. Sanders; throw it deep
let Thomas use his size
let Sanders use his speed and agility.
all this little short routes are killing me.
Peyton was throwing that bitch up like he didn't care for 4-5 years in Denver
Why change that?

I think it was the coaching that cause the Broncos to lose last week, because Siemian has the arm to throw deep, but for whatever reason, the interim coach didn't allow it to happen.

But you're right,we need to stretch the field more,I'm tired of these bubble screens we still do.

With that said, the thing we need is to get the tight ends involved, because when we were putting up points it was because teams couldn't double everyone...Virgil Green could be that guy,but they have him as a blocking tight end.

I also, think we need to find a third receiver to get involve also.

Most importantly,we need to get the run game going, because we did play action the last three games and the defense didn't bite at all....:smh::smh::smh::smh::smh::smh:

We got Bennie Fowler, dude is fast,
but idk...
Yeah man, that coach was scared.
no reason why we should have lost last week to the Bolts
AND still had a chance at the end of the game

Chris Harris: Osweiler 'like a gunslinger' right now

Brock Osweiler will face his former team on Monday Night Football this week as a different player than he was a year ago.

This is not only true because of the offense he's playing in -- far removed from the Gary Kubiak offense Osweiler came up under -- but also the circumstances. Former teammate Chris Harris picked up on something interesting after watching Osweiler lead a comeback victory over the Colts this past weekend.

"He's like a gunslinger right now," Harris told The Denver Post. "He's throwing the ball a lot. He's throwing it everywhere and he's also forcing a lot of throws so there's a lot of opportunities to get picks."

Perhaps that might have been true in just about any system Osweiler played in after leaving Denver. The Texans quarterback is currently tied for second in the NFL with eight interceptions, behind only the soon-to-be-benched Ryan Fitzpatrick.

It might sound a little tired to call this a measuring stick game for the Texans quarterback after he already faced the Minnesota Vikings' defense and lost 31-13, though Denver's defense provides some unique challenges of its own. Even if this defense seems like it has the ability to run on autopilot -- the Broncos are first in pass defense (182.3 yards/game) and fourth in total defense (295 yards/game) -- it wouldn't take long for Wade Phillips to scoot down the hallway at Dove Valley and yank out some Osweiler practice film from a year ago.

Similarly, it won't be hard for Osweiler to recall his time as the scout-team quarterback against that base defense.

A win over the Broncos could allow Osweiler to erase the chalkboard in Houston, and start over with the team's fan base and coaching staff. As suspicions creep in about his ability to shoulder a high-powered offense and hefty contract, is there a team he'd rather face than the Denver Broncos? Or would he rather face any other team?

good win,but the offensive line needs to stop with the penalties :smh::smh::smh:

Hopefully, the running game continues and I like how the defense mixed in some zone tonight to stop the intermediate routes, but the running defense is still a huge problem.....:hmm::hmm:

Malik Jackson can't be that huge of a difference, because we was able to stop the run with Pot Roast being our main DT,a few years back.We need to fix the run defense... :hmm:

This team seriously need to cut down on the penalties, every time we have something going penalties kills the drive.

Also,I don't understand, why this team didn't give the ball to Booker more.I think we ran the ball three or four times in the first quarter.

This team still can't stop the run,I don't understand why this team can't stop the run.Our run defense was our strongest point last year. If,we lose in the playoffs,it's because we can't stop the run.

One more thing,Booker and Bibbs need to hold on to the ball...More so,Bibbs,I have a heart attack whenever I see him holding on to the ball :smh:

Going to be interesting what the Broncos do,since Aqib won't be playing

I was actually just reading about that. Obviously Roby takes his spot right. Doss gets a bigger role. They're not switching up anything. Next man up. I think we will be ok. Our pass defense is solid. Our run defense on the other hand...you were right. i thought it would get better by now.

I'm interested to see what our running game will look like. Mack will eat I'm sure so we need to protect our "Captain" by not being one dimensional.

I think our running back not being good has everything to do with the offensive line...I thought that of all things would of improved this year, but it hasn't..

The thing that pisses me off more about the offensive line,is the penalties.I don't know what it is,but it needs to stop.Whenever,we get a drive going, someone from the offensive line cost us yardage and we go three and out.

As,for the defense, many people think the lose of Trevanthan is the reason, why teams are putting running backs on passing routes, but ignore when Trevanthan was out,a few years ago,we was able to stop that and teams wouldn't do that against us...Hell,it's the reason, why Brandon Marshall became a starter last year, because he did so well in Trevanthan's place at the time.

I don't know,if it's teams catch up on the defense, scheme wise or something else, but they need to minimize that ASAP.

The team also needs to do better in the first quarter, because the defense have gave up more points in the first quarter than they did all of last year.

Don't get me started on the run defense it's pathetic that it fallen from what it was, since Elway became GM

Even, when John Fox was the coach, the run defense was top 5,now all of a sudden it's ranked 23rd.. :smh:

Better play calling

What gets me,I'm on the Broncos main messageboard and folks is ignoring the offensive line problem we've been having since the Shanahan era and yet want Lynch to be the quarterback now....

And,you bring up a point,I thought Kubiak like to use the tight ends, because we sure haven't been using them at all...

Kubiak drafted one last year and acquired one a few weeks ago and yet they haven't been used..

Don't me let start about the run defense,I knew this was going to be an issue when Vance Walker went to the IR and yet Kubiak didn't try to get someone to replace him

And,why is Kubiak throwing 5 straight passes at the beginning of the game for most of the season, but expect the running game to get going

And,when this team is driving,it gets stop by penalties by the offensive line and Kubiak seriously need to do something about folks returning kicks from the endzone
