It was refreshing from the opening which was just a mental beatdown. I think they did a good job because as a viewer we were beaten down as the characters and on this journey they found hope against tyranny and we felt for them. I felt like good but we know there is always going to be something looming so we will see.

This is why I usually watch Westworld last,because it would cleanse all the stupidity from the Walking Dead.
That's the conflict and resolution to the Avengers movies. Go out alone, make a mess, get humbled, come together, destroy Thanos... I mean Negan.

This episode I thought clearly explained why you can't just KILL Negan...

Tyreese had a chick but Carol burned her. Bob and Sasha were together for a minute. The only surviving character they really haven't put with someone is Darryl.
Wasn't Darryl fucking Carol on the low at the prison? Could've sworn she gave him the wink and the nod and they went into the RV to get busy.
It's been an uneven half season for the most part, but I see what they are trying to do. They had to show a) Rick wasn't going to be able to Out "crazy" Negan and be the hero as they have for the other villains b) Show how vast the Saviors area of control is and what other groups might be sympathetic to starting a revolt and c) they had to show that just going along with Negan wasn't going to work.
Add in the fact having to give meaningful screen time to all the cast and this is what you get. Outside of the ridiculous forced encounters with zombies (Sand pit zombies, Swamp zombies) it's not been terrible, but it's definitely taken a lot of the "must see" factor away.
I thought the last 2 episodes helped round out Negan's character to a certain extent. He's very calculating in his brutality. He knew if he did anything to Carl that Rick has no reason to be complacent. He also knows that a complacent Rick is still able to control Alexandria through sheer force of will and he's not going to risk that for anyone especially Spencer. When the girl saviour shoots the fat chick he even mentions that's not who he would have picked, I think it's because he knew she served a purpose and therefor had some value.
The whole shave and dinner scenes showed that he really would like to have a situation like Alexandria if he could. A get away from the world he's created with the Saviors.
Negan was more surprised than scared when he got shot at, but I saw real concern when he realized there was a new source of bullets. Clearly the ammo problem is universal. Next half season will revolve around who has access to the most bullets.

I think they teased the idea of a relationship between them, but I don't think anything really happened. Walking Dead likes to pair characters off for little mini-arcs to allow for some character development. They did it with Carol and Tyreese, Darryl and Beth and recently Sasha and Maggie.
Carol was also linked with Tobin (from Alexandria) before she decided she couldn't fake being happy.
I don t understand why people think they are stealing plots from places....the writers are very much bringing the comic to life.
