TV SHOWS / SERIES - Seen any good ones lately? Please feel free to post reviews / feedback / trailers / articles / TV news / all that shit ...

Well said, Playa.

I think alot of the major networks lost the trust of viewers / fans years back when they would yank shows off the air after a few episodes, or after a relatively good season (which may not have generated the viewership / ad dollars).

Like you said ... why would people feel confident investing their TIME into something which is on eggshells?

One of my favorite breakdowns was from an interview with a female showrunner on the Hollywood Reporter's podcast a year or two back. She basically said when you're pitching your show(s) ... make sure you have MAPPED things out. Explain to the heads that you've got this season charted out ... and what you're thinking of for follow-up seasons. Or where you can derive spinoffs for certain characters, IF it ever gets to that point.

I'm still pretty damn impressed how the Breaking Bad crew did Better Call Saul so well. Taking such a well-received show in BB, and doing a very strong prequel in BCS ... with the last season or two being some of the best TV on the air. It would have been much easier for them to just do some type of sequel. Instead they did a huge backstory for an initial secondary character in a "criminal" lawyer ... and made people care about the likes of "Kim", "Nacho" and more along the way too.

Wow... that is solid pitch advice

The way she was breaking things down I understood what she meant. It was her telling the studio I have a story to tell ... give me time to tell. If you and the viewers want more, I can plot that out further too. I was nodding my head in agreement pulling for her show(s) that I hadn’t even seen. She had already explained her brainstorming process and I was sold.

Enjoyed the first 2 episodes of the new Ted Lasso season. Checked them out yesterday. Good balance of Ted and the team, and the storylines with Keeley and Nate respectively. The episodes are seemingly a bit longer than in previous seasons.

I didn’t really like season 1 but found season 2 more interesting with the Nate storyline and thought Roy began to stand out as a character. Finding season 3 to be meh through two episodes- No interesting conflict so far and nothing more than a chuckle for me.

I think this should be the future of American TV. Something Europe has always done.

A good exec (yeah I know) should be able to see when a show is going to pop or just be quality

Make a 2 or 3 season deal from the jump and lock it in. Especially in sci fi.

Fans are drowning in content. And don't want to commit on a show they know that may be cancelled it ain't nothing new.

But imagine if we KNEW definitely that Last if us was 5 seasons?

Or yellow jackets was 4?

The contracts the scripts the sets the audience are all prepared. Probably be cheaper in the long run too.

You can add a 'bonus" season or mini event whatever if you NEED more episodes.

But I think the trust and commitment would be well received by the industry and the audience.

Yellowjackets creators have said they are aiming for 5 seasons. I thought it was good but agree with the consensus I’ve seen that 5 would be way too much,

I just rewatched the first episode— Was thinking of rewatching the whole first season because my memory of it is spotty but don’t have 10 hours for that so the season finale and recap will have to do for me getting in to season 2.

really good
including a great convo with Hank Aaron

Probably my very first sports super hero.

I gotta see this.

* is it just me or do these streaming services need to promote these things better?

Glad you liked it, Vicious.

Playahaitian - agreed. Especially with all the great shows & content out there these days. Need to make sure people hear about it more. Heard some of the earlier reviewers saying that about Poker Face on Peacock. Noting it's popular and has word of mouth buzz ... but you'd think that NBC would choose to give it a bump and air a couple of episodes & direct people to check out more on Peacock itself.

I believe that's what happened previously with ABC, right? Around the time of airing (or after the fact) they aired The Mandolorian on ABC in the hopes of people checking out more on Disney+ ...

Good point about 5 seasons risking running too long.

Also ... wanting to refresh one's self with the previous season and not having the time. What we usually do is ...

- Read some of the episode recaps from Wikipedia or the websites that do episode-to-episode coverage

- Watch the previous season finale

- Look for any of the Youtubers who do a seasonal recap quickly (say 10 - 20 minutes)

That will bring you up to speed in just over an hour total.

Enjoyed episode 4 with Eilish. It was fun watching her & Fishback's scenes together. That calm, unsettling feeling between them.

That is really the one I was waiting for.

Because I have heard nothing but raves over that performance.

* I understand we are being flooded with content, but the lack of surprise, every twist and guest star leaked really lessens the overall experience.

@Helico-pterFunk @ViCiouS @blackbull1970

I wanted to ask your expert opinion about this...

If YOU were in charge?

How do you determine (I mean what would be your personal criteria) which shows on a streaming platform would be weekly as opposed to the complete season bring dropped at once?

Cause personally I don't think swarm is a"weekly" show. But it's a tough watch to try to binge in one sitting. Which is NOT an insult at all. It's just that the subject matter is kinda heavy.

But I think buzz wise maybe it would have benefitted being a weekly because maybe the surprises would have been kept longer?

But my argument feels weak (no pun intended) because it seems dropping the whole series at once has had that show trending for weeks.

I think shows like yellow jackets should be weekly but I would have dropped all of poker face at once.

Or maybe it doesn't matter?

Agreed. It's tough to duck and dodge all the content surprises. People are trying to merely catch up with everything out there, lol.

It's TOO MUCH.

And then they end up canceling so storyline is unresolved by the time you get around to finding it.

To me if I'm an executive I don't order a show unless I know we can afford SOME type of resolution.

Even If we go back and reboot it later down the line.

I don't think it works leaving fans frustrated.

But maybe there is now a train of thought where executives think poorly resolved fan favorite cult following type shows are better left poorly resolved?

As to create a hunger for closure???

And set the potential reboot?

That's a really good question. I've wondered what the thought process is with it all too.

Some shows get that steady buzz when the whole season drops at once. Others fall into a tough spot in that there's TOO LONG a gap until the next season (sometimes close to 2 years). I think the full season drop is most effective when you know there's a shorter window until the next season. The previous season won't then feel like a distant memory by the time the next installment comes around.

I will say this though ... I do like this format of late with shows dropping 2 - 4 episodes to start the season ... then rolling out to weekly thereafter.

As some of the media reviewers and critics have said ... it's sort of a way for them to say "Don't just judge us on the season premiere. Give a look at the other 1 - 3 episodes we've given you as well to get a FEEL for what's in store this season." And that way the initial reviews for the season are more balanced and fair. Or as some reviewers will say ... by the 2nd or 3rd ep ... you're in for a treat!

Good point about a show like Swarm. With the heavy subject matter ... even though the episodes are in and around that 30 - 40 minute mark ... it can be a challenging binge at times. I did 3 eps at first ... waited a handful of days and saw 4 yesterday ... and will do the final 3 in the next day or two.

I know what you mean.

You want that resolution / closure at the end.

I'll tell you ... it's funny trying to figure out how to balance stuff. Funny reading the reviews from our peers at BGOL and other spots. We're all trying to give our takes on SERIES & MOVIES without spoiling shit for others ... as we know others will get around to watching stuff months / years from now as there's no set timeline.

And some of us are trying to go back and watch the prestige TV shows from HBO, Showtime & others from 10 - 20 years ago as well ... without landing on spoilers ahead of time too, lol.

Good advice, especially the Youtube recap— I’ll go that route because I already saw a season 2 episode 1 spoiler on Twitter. :smh:

@playahaitian

Side note ... what I do for my dad to keep him in the loop with current hit (or new) shows is I have an 8x11 sheet of paper and update his flashdrive for him. I'll say X show - episodes 1 & 2 .... Y show - episodes 1 - 3, etc.

And just tell him to cross stuff off the list when he gets around to it. Also, let me know by phone or email what stuff he's seen or wants more of. Sometimes he'll tell me he's no longer interested in something, or after the season wraps he isn't sure he wants to follow more. But for the most part he's on board with the same shows.

He's never seen Freaks & Geeks from 20+ years ago ... so I'm gonna surprise him this spring and put a bunch of those episodes on his flashdrive. I've referenced the show to him over the years and said it's quite funny. Plus he's familiar with some of the cast and will get a trip out of seeing them younger in their careers as he's watched Starr recently on Tulsa King, Franco on The Deuce, and Segel currently on Shrinking.

@The Catcher In The Rye

Side note ... shoutout to all the video editors who have done great tributes to their favorite shows on Youtube. There were alot of them last decade with tributes to shows like Breaking Bad. Recaps of the character arcs for Walter White, Gustavo Fring, etc. Really enjoyed checking those out after watching a series in full.

Just watching this one now ...

Godfather of Harlem

The fate of Malcolm X is well known but I definitely felt the tension in this episode and its due to good acting, writing and direction. Not sure if there will be a season 4 but if not they all should be proud of what they put together.

Succession

The final season is off to a good start with the siblings trying to top their father and with a great bidding war and end(?) to a relationship. This show does awkward with intensity so well. That one percent....HILARIOUS

Yellowjackets

This series just promises to just get weirder and more intense in its second season. The crash survivors still trying to shake off inner demons that refuse to let go. I'm looking forward to seeing the additional characters and how things play out for them.

There are so many on YouTube and no way of discerning relative quality!

I ended up going to AV Club to read the summaries— I got to the episode 8 Misty cocaine scene and realized I had to watch it and I’m just gonna have to rewatch the last three from this point.

Depends on how the series is presented.

I was first against Disney putting out The Mandalorian weekly cuz I had been accustomed to Netflix.

But Disney has steadily surprised us with their Star Wars/Marvel series by dropping unexpected surprises during the season.

Because we live in an age of Mofos can’t keep their mouth shut. If a series full of surprises is released at once, mofos will blab their mouths all over the internet spoiling shit for those who have not gotten a chance to view it.

I myself on this forum and other places thru-out the internet try my best to stay away from threads and other places cuz mofos just love spoiling shit.

For regular/slow burn series like “Yellowstone”, “Godfather of Harlem”, “Wu-Tang: A American Saga” or “Yellowjackets”, they could probably be released all at once cuz they really are not binge type series.

Basically anything where you can’t watch more than two episodes at once without getting bored or zoning out should be released all at once.

Fast paced and exciting content, that should be released weekly.

Ok after I finish Swarm and Poker face?

It's this and Yellowjackets.

A friend recently finished this one and recommended it. Said the acting was good & story held his interest throughout. He’s also been watching The Last of Us, Mayor of Kingstown and Ted Lasso of late ...
