Writer and commentator Michael Harriot is the unofficial-official “Dean of Black Twitter.”
Harriot grew up in Hartsville, South Carolina, raised by his single mother and grandparents. Growing up in the American South, he was fascinated with history at a young age, fostered by museum trips. Eventually, his love for history led him to major in mass communications and history at Auburn University.
After completing his undergraduate work, Harriot obtained his Master’s in macroeconomics and international business from Florida State University. His work eventually led him to write for notable publications like The Washington Post and The Atlantic. However, his online presence gained traction, increasing his notoriety. His “hot take” online commentary gained attention from social media users and the mainstream press. Harriot’s opinions led him to become a political and culture commentator for outlets, including MSNBC and CNN.
However, his journalism career hasn’t taken a backseat as Harriot became a notable voice for publications like The Guardian and The Root. His witty commentary and investigative skills scored him well-deserved awards from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ). The writer’s work led him to become a go-to voice at the media outlet The Grio, where he is a feature writer and host of TheGrioDaily podcast.
While the internet has remained his home, Harriot expanded into television as a staff writer on the late-night talk show
The Amber Ruffin Show. The series scored him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. In 2022, he hopped into the publishing world with a two-book deal, starting with the history retelling
Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America.
As the self-proclaimed “wypipologist,” Michale Harriot has used various platforms to amplify Black commentary and thought. His words have defined and redefined Black internet culture. Harriot is one of the loudest voices for spotlighting Black plight and joy with wit and sincerity. No matter how much trouble his words bring him, Harriot isn’t afraid to speak up. So, I say, “Mr. Harriot, we want to see you keep saying the things that most only say behind closed doors.”
The most marvelous, unbelievable thing about Black people in America is that they exist. Every imaginable monstrosity that evil can conjure has been inflicted on this population, yet they have not been extinguished.
